Godda Admit, Sunday Was Fun!

One day you’re the best thing since sliced bread. The next, you’re toast.

Into the swim spa at 7:00 AM sharp with a big cup of coffee.  The way to start the day!  We planned out the activities and who is doing what to get prepare for our dinner guests!  Dru and Vicky are coming over for an early steak dinner with southern fixin’s courtesy of Dru!

But first, we put the final touches on the office!  Wow, everything is in its place, and with all the piles of paper we had been handled or filed, the site looks great!  I lost the bet; there was a top on the desk!

No, we are not in the wrong house!

We watched our televangelist at 11:00 AM, and he, as usual, had good messages of faith.

At noon we took off to do the shopping for today. First stopped at Albertsons, the local market, with about 80% luck.  Mary did meet my butcher, Jan, who I met a few weeks earlier when shopping for dinner for my lady!  Jan was very helpful and got me a great cut of meet1  However, there were no Lychees to be had!

Did You Know? It is a tropical tree native to the Guangdong and Fujian provinces of southeastern China, where cultivation is documented from the 11th century. China is the primary producer of lychees, followed by India, other countries in Southeast Asia, the Indian Subcontinent, Madagascar, and South Africa. A tall evergreen tree, the lychee bears small fleshy fruits. The outside of the fruit is pink-red, roughly textured, and inedible, covering sweet flesh eaten in many different dessert dishes.

So we went next to Trader Joe’s, but alas, they have not had them for years!  Dang!  The manager suggested a Korean or Chinese market, so we looked in the magic iPhone and located a store about eleven minutes away; we are off like a herd of turtles!  But, on the bright side, we did find Acai in a frozen form.

Did You Know? Acai, pronounced AH-sigh-EE, is a palm tree that is widely distributed in the northern area of South America. Its berries are used to make medicine.
Acai is most commonly used for arthritis, high cholesterol, erectile dysfunction (ED), weight loss and obesity, “detoxification,” aging skin, metabolic syndrome, and for improving general health. But there is limited scientific evidence to support these uses. Acai gained popularity in North America after being promoted by Dr. Nicholas Perricone as a “Superfood for Age-Defying Beauty” on the Oprah Winfrey show.As a food, the acai berry is eaten raw and as a juice. The juice is also used commercially as a beverage and in ice cream, jelly, and liqueurs. In manufacturing, acai berry is used as a natural purple food colorant.

We entered the store, and it was definitely Korean.  If we were not in a hurry, we would have wandered around for a while, but we found the canned Lychees and headed north to Orange!

Arriving home, we unpacked our groceries, and Mary began operating on the eyeballs. The recipe was complicated, but like a master, Mary made it look easy!

Halloween “treats” are being prepared.

Dang!  She scared Scout and me with the results!  He ran and hid under the bed; I followed but I was too high to get under with him! It looked like the closet was my safe place from “the eyes”.

I asked Mary if she heard about the bone doctor and eye doctor who shared jokes? The bone doctor’s jokes were pretty humerus, but the jokes of the eye doctor were to cornea.

I remembered an old saying, “It is often said that before you die your life passes before your eyes. It is in fact true. It’s called living.”

We finally got the Lychees.

It takes a precision effort to place the eyes into the drinks!

With surgical precisions, the treats are prepared.

OMG, this ought to scare everyone! They look like my eyes feel after a long session at the computer!

This drink will certainly be a surprise.

While I was preparing the gilet mignon’s on the barbeque, the girls were chatting away inside.  I tried to listen in, but it was girl talk; Scout and I decided to stay outside!

Dru was cooking up fried cornbread!

Dru is from Georgia, and we checked her green card; she is legal!  I had to ask Dru a question:

Q: What is green and has its own talk show?
A: Okra Winfrey!

Dru asked if we had ever had fried cornbread, and of course, the answer was “No!” Well, right there on the spot, she whipped up a pile of fried cornbread, and it all disappeared at dinner very quickly!

Fried Okra was on the menu.

Dinner time, and we dined outside.  Mary brought her unique concoction of Halloween eyes, and we all downed the non-alcoholic eyeballs.  The Lychees were very good!  Hey, only 66 calories per eyeball!  Next time, I plan to drop some rum or gin into the mix.  Perhaps we will have to make some and take it to Chuck at Patty’s Place to serve the regulars!

The eyes have it!

Dru and Vicky hit it off; we all sat around and talked until it got dark, and then we headed inside for dessert.  I enjoyed Mary enjoying the banter, so I did the KP this evening; only fair as Mary worked hard to get everything ready!  I reminded everyone that, “My cooking was so bad my kids thought Thanksgiving was to commemorate Pearl Harbor.”

Dining al fresco with the heater on!

Mary enjoyed the eyeballs!  They were quite a conversation piece!  I can see more of these soon!

Laugh and giggle time.

Sometime around 8:00 PM, Dru and Vicky departed, and we did the final cleanup and then admired our decorations.  Colleen’s suggestion on the trees was fantastic!

We continued with the review of the decorations.

I told Mary, “Halloween is easily the scariest night of the year, what with the dead rising from their graves… and fat girls thinking they look sexy dressed as cats.”

We walked to the car with the ladies and, on the way back in, took a picture of the house with the lights on!

They are looking good!

Almost spooky; Mary has some spiderwebs she plans to add to the decor!

As seen from the sidewalk, the place does look eerie!

I looked up, and it was half-moon.  No, not me; the real moon!  Our flags looked great, and thanks to Joe, the flags are visible all night long.

The moon was almost half; Halloween should be a full moon, oh oh!

With the trusty iPhone, I dialed in SkyView and scanned the overheads.  We were being watched! SkyView is a fantastic app!

Right overhead was Neptune, Saturn, and tiny ol Pluto!

We went inside, did some final cleanup, and crashed.  Mary read for a while, and I hit the sack asleep and slept like a baby until 3:00 AM.

It’s Saturday And Time To Rest!

The weekend is here; give it a warm welcome by allowing yourself a lovely day of rest.

We hit the Swim Spa first thing with two cups of coffee and a pair of Mary’s homemade muffins!  It was a wonderful way to start the day!

After soaking, we entered the office and began organizing and cleaning; it seems to be a full-time job!  We have a large office/library about 20×20 feet which is wonderful as all our computer goodies fit and we have room for a kitchen table when we zoom.

By 3:00 PM we were done so we got ready to go dancing.  We put up the holiday tree in the front TV room window and it will be just fine!

5:00 PM and time to go to Chino for dancing.  We were full from lunch so we stopped at the Vintner’s Restaurant and had some appetizers and a glass of vino!  We were in great moods and the pictures came naturally!

We had a lite dinner at the Vintner’s Tavern just around the corner from the dance studio.

I played with the camera and got a great B&W shot with a studio background!

It is getting close to Halloween.

She threw a hex on me, it was something like “Make the boy dance like Fred Astaire this evening”.  Moments later I felt my legs grow four inches, I lost 100 pounds and grew hair.  I am ready for an evening of dancing with friends.

Casting her spell on me; this will be interesting!

To make sure we had energy for dancing we shared some bread pudding.  Delicious!

Bread pudding was done differently.

Into the lair we went and we were greeted by Bones, our new dance instructor.

Mary found a new friend, no bones about it!

Mary introduced us and they watched us quietly all evening long!

He did not care if she led or not!

Line dance time….

We returned home at 9:30 PM and crashed!  We didn’t even start a movie cause we knew we would not last. Tomorrow we are having a small dinner party so it will be time to go shopping first thing.

Yeah! Friday Is Here!

Tonight’s forecast, 99% chance of wine.

Poor Scout, his little ears got infected, and he was up at 2:00 AM crying and scratching.  Mary gave him Benadryl, and that calmed him down a bit.  As soon as Mary departed for work, I found the Orange VCA Hospital that would take Scout at 10:30 AM, so we raced over there for a look-see.

Before I departed, I checked with the mason, and he was doing well!  He will return Monday and begin the stacking of the stones!

The wall is now complete and ready to receive the cement and stones!

We are pretty happy with him as he left no mess even though it was a messy job to remove the old plaster.

The place was spotless at the end of the day.

Scout and I mounted The Silver Fox for the four-mile trip to VCA Orange on the west side of the traffic circle.  We got right in, and Scout was a trooper!

After the exam, the doc said it was definitely inflamed and likely an infection.  She took samples to send to the lab to get an exact answer. The doc said it would take an hour, so I went to a local Mexican restaurant called Bahia and had a burrito and a margarita! He got three shots and would be resting all afternoon peacefully.

The whole restaurant was nicely decorated!

A text message arrived saying the baby was ready and what a good doggie he was; he made friends with the entire staff! I jumped in The Silver Fox, turned on the hydraulics, and made the car bounce up and down, and we hopped out of the parking lot, attracting quite a following of locals asking, “Who is that masked Gringo?”

We arrived home, and Scout assumed his position at the front door, guarding it against the Huns and other invading groups!  We wondered why the FedEx, UPS, and mailman came to our door wearing chain-mail!

Scout greets the invaders with his trademark blood-curdling howl, which, BTW, makes the local Coyotes run and hide!

All of a sudden, the invader alarm went off. It was the UPS driver who had a package in one hand and four pounds of raw steak in the other while carrying a white flag in his teeth! Scout was barking and shattered several crystal goblets in the China Closet.

It was Colleen’s recommended “Halloween Tree,” which I ordered while she was here.

It is suitable for all the holidays! Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentines, St Patrick, and Independence Days!

The UPS guy also had a delivery from eBay, another twenty-foot-long eyeball garland for the holiday tree. Garland is a funny word, so I looked it up. From the French guirlande, itself from the Italian ghirlanda, a braid.

I found some more eyeball garland for the holiday tree! Now we can complete the bottom of the tree!

Colleen spent almost three weeks here and she pitched right in, which we appreciated.  But, she did some wash and folded the sheets and put them away remarking, “I learned how to do it via YouTube”!  Well, I am old and wise so I went ahead and folded everything.  When I put the sheets away I noticed a distinct difference.  Hers were half the size of mine!  I assumed she ran over the folded sheets with an 18-wheeler!  This will require a phone call to Colleen to learn the secrets!

Can you tell which one I folded?

Yesterday at dusk, we put Robin in charge of the watering can decoration. Well, it was a watering can and some fairy lights put together.  The idea came from Miss Vicky; it looks pretty good!

I admit I stole the idea from Vicky!

The meds Scout had earlier were working.  He was not digging at his ears, and he was mellow; we even had a delivery without seeing the guys leave running for his truck!

Scout is back to normal, the meds worked, and he had a great night!

We decided to visit Jan, and we stopped by her favorite fast food place. The three of us killed off a bottle of Two-Buck-Chuck, our favorite. We also got a salmon bowl and a steak bowl for us. We enjoyed visiting Jan as the three of us laughed and giggled the whole time.

I admit, I did ask Jan, “What is a witch’s favourite class?”  Not getting a rapid response,I said, ” Spelling”.  I was expected to follow that one up and I did, “What do skeletons say before they begin dining? Bone appetite!”

Returning home, I bedazzled Dr. Mary with the myriad of lighting choices we have on the Halloween Tree. We played with the colors for quite a while! Point the remote at the receiver to control the lights, pick up your favorite color, speed to fit your eyes, set timer to save energy, the lighting mode to flash/strobe/fade, and more.

Spooky!

By 9:00 PM, we were done for the day!  We opted out of the hot tub tonight and decided a good movie would be excellent.  Well, I lasted about two minutes before I was out, and Mary stayed up and watched an entire film.

Tomorrow we will work in the office and take it easy because we see dancing in our future.

Today Was Wild! Contractors Coming Our Our Ears!

Why don’t witches ride their brooms when they’re angry? They’re afraid of flying off the handle!

We were up at 5:00 AM!  Yes, we woke up the roosters!  Why?  Miss Mary had to be at Denny’s in Huntington Beach at 7:00 AM to introduce her “replacement” in the Women’s Business Group.  Mary is leaving the group soon, and she wanted her replacement to be represented in the group.  So, a personal introduction was called for!

Me?  I was assigned to home duty this morning because we had contractors here all day!  First came the mason who will rebuild the fireplace/hearth, then the electrician, and finally the garage door opener wizard!

I used my time to send out the invites for pumpkin carving last night.  Now we will count the spooks that will be joining us this year!

Jack ‘O Lantern In Cemetery In Spooky Night With Full Moon

While I was working in the office, I got an email from Colleen, and she included a movie about Mary and I dancing at a recent party!   We looked pretty good, considering everything!  Thank you, Colleen, for the excellent video!

After opening up the wall, we found the flippers put plaster over the brick, which had to be taken down, piece by piece.  The stack stone will be cemented to the old brick.  We choose not to go with a veneer but opted for a manually stacked and individually laid set of stones. Mica is usually what makes the granite stones look beautiful by giving off a reflective three-dimensional appearance that sparkles.

The work begins!

Our electrician joined us at about 9:30 AM, and we traced the short to the circuit which lights the walkway lights.  So now, I will troubleshoot that and attempt to find the specific point of the problem.  Perhaps I can run another wire.  I will call Joe to provide advice and see if he has a camera system.

Then we were off to “Girls Night Out,” where our waitress for the past 18 months was on vacation, an Elk Cruise up the coast.  We had a delicious meal with me doing in a swordfish and Mary enjoying a salad and cup of soup!

We had a new waiter!

Bill was talking about investments, and his eyes get glued to the TV.

Bill was watching the stock market.

We returned home to find a lot of progress being made.  The old plaster is being shipped off piece by piece, and the fireplace will be placed by stack stone using amazing granite from Idaho.

You know that Stonemasons take their work for granite.  Their work is genuinely marblelous.  I mentioned to him if he knew the tile mason who was terrible at his job. He couldn’t get the right tile to use, and if he did, he could not lay it the correct way.  He had erect tile dysfunction.

We are chipping away at the fireplace.

Robin joined us for dinner and a sleepover.   Mary had made soup, and we added a salad and dined on the patio under the heat of the heat lamp.

Dinner time

The laughter and giggling went on for an hour.  Great fun!

Chomp!

Poppy was pooped tonight because I was up at 1:00 AM Tuesday to see Colleen off and then up at 4:00 AM yesterday to get Mary off to work by 6:00 AM!

Enjoying life

We went over plans for pumpkin carving and it looks like the Linds are in along with the Duda’s plus the Chartier’s so far.  We await answers from the northern OC contingent (Irene, Vicky, and Greg) plus the La Mirada Liles’.

Mary is excited about our second annuals pumpkin carving party!

We had dessert and crashed at 9:30 PM.  I was asleep before my head hit the pillow and stayed comatose until 3:00 AM when mother nature called!

We Are Having Our Mid-Week Crisis! What To Do?

I have won first place in this Halloween costume contest 16 years in a row. This year I am dressed as a hotdog. I’m on a roll.

We were up and ready to go as the cleaners will be here at 8:00 AM.  The only problem is we blew a breaker last night, and it fees the Family Room and Kitchen/Breakfast area lighting!  We called the homeowners insurance, and they will send someone out.   I will be happy when the new power panel goes in, and we will have all the circuits labeled!

My property taxes dropped over $3,000 per year mainly because the land value was down over $300,000!  Los Alamitos was an expensive place to live.  That was unexpected and delightfully accepted! We went to the Post Office as soon as the cleaners arrived and contributed to the property taxes.

Then it was off to Rockwell’s for breakfast as the cleaners were busy doing their thing.

Mary did their egg whites with veggies while I dive headfirst into a Mediterranean omelet.

From there, we made a stop by Walgreens and CVS to pick up prescriptions, and we got our yearly flu shots!  We then headed to Home Depot as we divided to do some gardening.  We bought several flats of pansies and other ground cover plants and did the front yard!  Mary is getting good at using the auger, and it makes planting so much faster.

Remember: Root side down!

We worked for a couple of hours as we carefully put in potting soil in the new holes and packed the existing soil around the plant.  I got tired after a light lunch and decided to perform my daily “light-leak test.”  One must be sure no light leaks through the eyelids, and therefore the eyelids must be closed for at least an hour!

If Sleeping Beauty were a male, this is what it would look like!

After waking up, I did ask Mary, “What dinosaur makes the most noise when he is asleep? Tyrannosnorus“.  I know, that was pretty bad BUT there is more!  What do you call a snoozing dinosaur? A dino-snore!

While Mary did a few plantings in the backyard, I fixed the latch on the fence and rewired the bug-zapper, getting rid of the extension cord!  I also blew out the dead bugs from inside the zapper using my air compressor!

It off again to Home Depot, where we wanted to get a new set of LED Christmas lights. We also got the 5.5 ft Polar Wishes LED Nativity Set with 200 Lights.

There were oodles of things to choose from as it was early.  We came for some Halloween decorations, but there were gone; all that was left was some brooms!

One of Santa’s little helpers roamed the aisles.

Speaking of Santa, he showed up and talked to us!  Well, it was a recorded message!

Remember Santa; we were outstanding this year!

We decided to go by Big Lots in the same parking lot as Home Depot, and their prices are significantly lower for similar items.  We got the paper good for Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, so we are ready to go.

We were going to dance tonight, but alas, the ol’ bones were not ready to engage in such frivolity, so we had dinner and popped into the swim spa.  Dinner was a homemade salad, and I BBQ’ed up three small eye-of-round breakfast steaks!  We turned on the outside table header and dinner alfresco!

While we prepared dinner together, we video chatted with Dianne and David and they are going to join us for Halloween at the Elks!

Then into the 95-degree soothing water for an hour of sharing, and we even had a glass of wine.  We have an Alexa within two feet of the swim spa, so we talked to Colleen and Robin while getting our bodies back into shape for sleep.

Off In A Cloud Of Dust And A Hi-Yo Silver!

As a father, I want my daughter to know she is braver than she believes, stronger than she seems, smarter than she thinks, and loved more than she’ll ever know.

Countdown: 41 days remain until retirement!

We have spent the last two weeks together and enjoyed every second of the visit.  Now she must go and tend the flock in New Hampshire!  4:00 Am and the driver has arrived and off she went not to return until December!  I told Colleen. “If you do something you’ll regret in the morning, sleep till noon.”

Colleen’s activities while visiting us! (Click for 8″x10″)

Colleen’s family has been missing her (maybe except for mark, just a joke!)  She will be home tonight and back to the grandmotherly duties!

Colleen’s family all together in New Hampshire!

Today we went to visit Annie who is in failing health but hanging in there like a trooper.  She is in her 90s and keeping Virgil out of trouble, sometimes!

We returned home about 2:30 PM and had a nice lunch; Mary fixed the plates I cremated a couple of Boca Burgers!

We watched Halloween Town with Debbie Reynolds and then headed into the Swim Spa to relax.

Another Unsupervised Day At Casa Valencia! Oh Dear!

How do you know your old? People call at 9 p.m. and ask, “Did I wake you?”

FLASH FLASH FLASH!!!  As of this morning, Mary has thirteen days remaining to work before retirement sets in!  Yeah!  The week of Thanksgiving, Mary is pulling up stakes, and we will be together 24×7; we are looking forward to that!  I mentioned to Mary, “Retirement is wonderful. It’s doing nothing without worrying about getting caught at it.”

It’s Monday, and you are being treated to another of Paul’s favorites courtesy of YouTube!  This time it is “Harbor Lights” by the Platters!

The lyrics describe the sight of harbor lights in the darkness, which signal that the ship carrying the singer’s sweetheart is sailing away. The lonely singer hopes that the lights will someday signal the sweetheart’s return.

Before Mary departed, we walked Five Miles and saw some decorations of note!

Scout looked a little worried about this one!

He looks vicious, but fortunately, we was stuffed!

Quite a collection!

I was wondering how Halloween is going in New Hampshire with Jackie?  Then a picture showed up.  It is my granddaughter and husband with my great-granddaughter!

GREAT Granddaughter? OMG, I am old!

I got two scanners for my son, who will try to scan some photo albums from which Colleen is looking to get digital copies, and I found a unique picture of my mother and father! I was very fortunate to have such loving parents, and I miss them ever so much.  Dad has been gone 50 years and Mom 30 years; I’d love to have them back for an evening of sharing!  Alas, that is not to be.

The picture is circa 1955!

Yes, I did! I was at an ATM, and this old lady asked me to help check her balance, so I pushed her over.

I finished off the Octoberfest Website, and it went into “production” today!

The “To-Do List” was two pages long, and by golly, I did it!  Everything is done, especially for me.  I am tired, but I did manage a trip to the market and completed our shopping list plus some other goodies.  Tonight will be New York Steak on the barbie with a nice salad containing home-grown tomatoes!

Mary and Colleen got home about the same time, and I jumped into action.  We had fresh artichokes, and I made a great salad, then came the steaks!  Good dinner.  We talked until 9:00 p.m. and then crashed as Colleen had to be up and ready to go at 4:00 a.m.  We are going to miss her terribly.

It’s Sunday And We Are Going To Germany!

You have a bird
Du hast doch einen Vogel
You are crazy

We planted a guard pumpkin in the kitchen, and if it hears noises, it goes off!

It was 51 degrees outside when we got up, I fired up the heater, and we brought the house to 72 in just a few minutes!  Good news!

Mary tried on all of her Dirndl dresses, and all but two fit nicely (those two we bought when she was seventeen years old).

Did You Know? A dirndl is a feminine dress that originated in German-speaking areas of the Alps. Women and girls traditionally wear it in Bavaria (south-eastern Germany), Austria, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, and the Alpine regions of Italy. A dirndl consists of a close-fitting bodice featuring a low neckline, a blouse worn under the bodice, a wide high-waisted skirt, and an apron. The dirndl is regarded as a folk costume (in German Tracht). It developed as the clothing of Alpine peasants between the 16th and 18th centuries. Today it is generally considered the traditional dress for women and girls in the Alps and has particular designs associated with different regions. The usual masculine tracht counterpart of the dirndl is Lederhosen.

The girls suggested I wear Lederhosen, but that would be like two white toothpicks suck in a rotund potato!  I would scare the animals and tiny children!

I like the red one a lot better!

We are off to the Phoenix Club to meet up with Becky and Dan!

Dang, we can’t go inside and dance?

We have arrived, and the Phoenix Club is now only nine minutes away!

We are on the lookout for Becky and Dan.

We stood in a mile-long line, but it was with family, so it went quickly!

Mary was practicing the Robin pose!

We found Becky and Dan and got an excellent table inside the big tent! Mary and I did a swing and a waltz attempting to dance between the little kids on the floor! It was a bit noisy, but that was to be expected.

We all had a great time!

Mary practiced her Sound Of Music look as she danced down the aisle!  We met up with Louisa and her family there, which was a bonus!

We were waiting for an outburst of a song from “Sound Of Music.”

Singing her heart out and breaking mirrors as far away as Santa Ana!

Mary got some visiting time in with Becky, who is very busy these days with her career.  The whole table had loads of time to share.

Mom and daughter!

Then it happened!  The Germans did the “Whip Dance,” and Mary took extreme notice.

Great! Now I am going to be in trouble!

Did You Know: The Schuhplattler is a dance where male dancers in a line or circle are repeatedly hitting the soles of their shoes, their thighs, and their knees; this is Schuhplattler. This dance is one of the oldest dance routines in the world and is said to date back as early as 3000 BC, but it first appeared in recordings around the year 1030 by a monk in Bavaria. This dance was primarily performed in the Bavarian and Tyrolean Alps by farmers, hunters, and woodsmen.

We departed about 4:00 PM and headed home for a well-deserved nap!  We only had two glasses of wine, but we did do some serious potato pancakes and a tiny bit of dessert!

No more work today; the sheds stay shut!

We watched Ghost and, as usual, saw some new things (to us).  We crashed about 10:30 PM as Mary must work tomorrow, and Colleen has last-minute things to do before departing tomorrow at 4:00 AM!  We are going to miss that girl!!

Posted in Dining Out, Family, Food and Wine | Comments Off on It’s Sunday And We Are Going To Germany!

We Kept Busy From 6:00 Am Until Midnight!

Someone went into my shed and stole my limbo stick! How low can you go?

Colleen took off for a day full of baseball and soccer games while Mary and I worked in the shed!  They look so innocent on the outside but open the door, and voila, they look like Fibber McGree’s closet!

The He Shed and She Shed

Mary was looking for a few missing items, and she found them.  The Tiffany Lamp Shade hid in one of the last eight boxes that she had not gone through!  Mary was also able to get rid of a few boxes of stuff.

Meanwhile, I was in the He Shed doing the same thing, plus hanging up the light strings from the party and eliminating some items I have saved for years!  We are making progress.

Into the jaws of death, we go!

As we walked back and forth into the house, poor ol’ Scout wondered what was going on!  We reminded him that we had moved everything we both had into boxes, and we are still opening them and getting surprised!

“What are you guys doing now?”

We worked until about 4:00 PM and then got cleaned up and headed for The Fish Grill in Irvine to meet up with the Zaitz, Viky, and Ed.  These kind folks created a surprise for us; we got to go out to dinner and then to the Barclay Theather for a concert featuring Michael Feinstein.   It was beautiful music and stories with each of the songs.  Thank you, guys are a WONDERFUL evening.

I should mention that Vicky tried to sing. She ought to be arrested for loitering in front of an orchestra.

I reminded everyone that the closest thing to my singing the national anthem was the neighbor’s cat was being neutered.

We departed the theater at about 11:00 PM and headed to the parking lot.

Leaving the Irvine Barclay Theater

We stopped and snapped a shot (sometimes called evidence) before the Zaitz drove us back to our car at the restaurant.  Great company and beautiful friends!

We did decide that Bob was a Redneck because he has electronic singing fish in more than three rooms in his house.

I recalled an event early in my life.  The first time I sang in the church choir; two hundred people changed their religion.

Guess who took the photo?

Colleen had crashed, but she and Robin left us with two cherry turnovers.  We were afraid to try them, not knowing for sure if they were for us.  Now that we know, we expect them to disappear soon!

Good Night!

What a wonderful day with family and friends!

Posted in Family, Food and Wine, Friends, Theater | Comments Off on We Kept Busy From 6:00 Am Until Midnight!

Hi Ho Hi Ho, It’s Off To Work She Goes!

My boss told me to stop acting like a flamingo, so I had to put my foot down.

Dang, the clouds were crying when we got up!  More like a lite mist, but everything was wet so, what did we do?  We walked Five Miles!  Before we departed, I mentioned to Mary, “Where’s the best place to store your rain? In a cloud bank.”

Off like a thundering herd of turtles, we spun around the corner, leaving no dust…it was too wet for dust.   We scampered up the street toward the summit, an entire 100 feet in elevation about us.  Then down the road toward the boulevard with Scout (alias Five Miles) sniffing every spot he could remember and wondering why it smelled different.  Finally, we got to the last two turns, and we were home again.   Mary took an umbrella, so it was Scout and I that smelled like “wet dog.”

Q: What do you call it when it rains chickens and ducks?
A: Foul (fowl) weather.

I snapped a quick picture of our Halloween flag, and it looks pretty good, considering the lighting is terrible!

Wet but still waving in the breeze!

Mary is off to work, leaving Colleen and me un-supervised.  Instead of getting in trouble, Colleen departed to visit Trader Joe’s and bring back four cases of two-buck-chuck!  While she was gone, I diddled around in the office, straightening things up.  While working on the decorations page, I found an article about pumpkins!

Did You Know? The cans we see in the store showing pumpkins are not the same as the contents.

Canned pumpkin is pumpkin, but it’s not the type of pumpkin you likely imagine when you pluck a few cans off the shelf for your next pumpkin bread baking session. We’ve all believed our precious cans of pumpkin puree come from magical fields of orange gourds that bask in the sun until they’re ripe for the picking. And to be fair to our culinary imaginations, the cans often show illustrations of the classic jack-o’-lantern pumpkins, also known as field pumpkins.

Instead, most canned pumpkin in the U.S. is made from a type of pumpkin that doesn’t look all that typical. Dickinson pumpkins, also known as Dickinson squash, are the pumpkins used to make the majority of canned pumpkins we eat today. But Dickinson pumpkins are tan pumpkins with uniform, smooth skin much larger than the average field pumpkin. They’re also sometimes called squash, not pumpkins.

Ugly but they taste smashing!

At 11:00 AM, Colleen and I jumped in the Silver Fox and headed to Irvine to go to Joe’s favorite sushi restaurant, “Tommy’s.”  We had a fantastic lunch, and we teased Colleen the entire time; it was her first time with sushi!

Did You Know!  Research shows 25% eat sushi 2~3 times a month, 30% once a month, 30% less than that, and only 5% eat more than once a week. Sushi is probably still the most popular Japanese food in America, but it’s just one of many in Japan!

Jor ordered this thing-a-ma-bob!

An interesting name for a Japanese restaurant; it sounds more like a hamburger joint!

Good grub!

We headed home and awaiting Mary’s arrival. Good thing we did, and she was in the dumps today! Mary warmed up some leftovers, and we decided to visit Jan since she is just two miles away.

Being an eye doctor, I thought sure Mary would know the answer to my simple question but she did not! I said, “What do ghosts wear when their eyesight gets blurred? Spooktacles.”

Off to Jan’s fort cheering up and a glass of wine!

We departed a little after 9:00 PM, headed home, and tried to watch a movie; massive failure as we were all tired!  On the way home Colleen remarked that it was getting cold and of course I replied with, “What can you catch from a vampire in winter? Frostbite.”

We are heading home!

Tomorrow is a busy day as Colleen is going to youth sports games and we are going to a musical with the Zaitz and Vicky and Ed.

Oh, BTW, we are 99% finished with decorating!  Take a look!

Posted in Dining Out, Family, Friends, Walking | Comments Off on Hi Ho Hi Ho, It’s Off To Work She Goes!

It’s Thursday And All Is Well!

What do you get when you cross a vampire and a snowman? Frostbite.

You know the drill, we are up at them early! We went into the swim spa to get the day started; Colleen was asleep, and staying outside was good.

We have a “family wall,” and we plan to put our kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids on display!  Mary had pictures of her kids at the old house, so we put a few of them on a convenient bookshelf.

Mary’s kids are now on display; I am arranging for mine.

I still have my bronze shoes, and they are 75 years old!

The fall flowers are beautiful, and they decorate all around the house.  We have yet to put up the garlands, but that will be on Saturday,

Need I say more?

Fall flowers light the place up!

Every room is decorated, including the exercise room with Witchy rides the elliptical instead of a broom!

The witch gets some exercise!

It is Thursday, and that means Girls Night Out at the Elks.  We had a load of fun, and the hat prize was awarded to Linda.  Check out the side of the hat carefully; such boney fingers you have!

Linda has a great hat; look carefully.

The usual suspects were in attendance, although the Sea Booger Lady was not there; Iris had a card game, and there was no Sea Boogers to be had!

Girls Night Out is becoming popular.

After lunch, we stopped by Mary’s work to get a stamp so the new doctor taking her practice over could send out announcements, and with Mary’s name on the envelope, people will open it.   Then we drove to his offices in Irvine and delivered the stamp to his office.

Back home, we did some chores; Mary dead-headed the roses again while I took out the trash.  We had another six large 90-gallon cans of refuse!  Where is it all coming from!

Back home, we do some gardening.

By dusk, we were tired and decided it was Halloween movie time.  Colleen, Mary, and I found comfortable spots to crash in the TV Room and watched Hocus Pocus all the way through and then Haunted Mansion!

After the movie, we again hit the swim spa because Mary has to work tomorrow and a good night’s sleep is helpful!

Upon arriving at the hot tub/swim spa I realized that Mary had redecorated the tub!  I think I will let her go in first!

M-m-m-m-m-m; I may have to reconsider!

Just before crashing, we went upstairs to see our handiwork in the dark.  We have done an excellent job!

Mary had a great idea; we put the orange lights OVER the white lights.  It gave the tree a candy-corn look!

Our Halloween tree is decorated!

The decorations are fun, and we will change the tree to a Thanksgiving tree in a month!

Look closely, and you will see.

I use my LIFX bulbs all over the house to change colors and be programmed to go through a sequence of effects.  Well, we chose a simple pumpkin color for the lights upstairs.

My lights can change colors, almost 64,000,000 different colors!

Now it is time to crash as tomorrow is another busy day!

We Dood It!

How do vampires get around on Halloween? On blood vessels.

You know you must clean your house before the house cleaners come! 6:00 AM, and I am up and going!  I got caught up with the Daily Diary and progressed into the kitchen to straighten it up before the cleaners joined us today!

We are getting ready for Halloween!

We all split this morning, with Colleen visiting her Mom and taking her out to lunch.  I had to go to the Laser Care Skin Doctor to assess the latest cancer spot, which needed to be removed.  The doctor is in Long Beach, and I like him, so I will drive the twenty miles to stay with him.  That left Mary to watch the rain gutters be put on the house and do more decorating!

The house is looking like Halloween!

The Gutter Guys showed up at 9:55 AM, just before I departed, so I went over everything with them, which made it easier for Mary.

We all met back at the ranch about 1:00 PM when I met with the insulation contractor.  I am looking to have the entire attic re-insulated and drop the old R-13 in favor of the newest R38 batting; after all, Winter is on its way.

At 5:00 PM, the three of us were on the road again going to the Santa Ana Elks, where Colleen is being interviewed for membership into the Elks! While that was going on, Mary and I had an appetizer and a drink.  By the time Colleen was done, we had decided to dine at the Elks before walking Balboa Island and seeing the Halloween decorations! Our house cleaners showed up while I was taking a well-deserved snooze.

Dinner time at the Elks!

Mary tried the beef stroganoff while I did the chicken skewers.  We shared, and that was good! Mary, BTW, makes the best stroganoff ever! That way, we both get to have two items and learn what we like and dislike.

The lodge was busy this evening!

Colleen was interviewed in the big room, so we went into the lounge and hung out, deciding what to do next.  HAving Colleen with us is fun, so we want to pack everything in as soon as possible.

The lodge was busy this evening!

Dinner was done, and we headed to Newport and Balboa Island for a self-guided walking tour of the island decorations. We took the ferry to the island to see the sunset and enjoy the sea air.

We took the Balboa Ferry to the island!

Did You Know? In 1919 Joseph Allan Beek obtained the rights from the city of Newport Beach to provide a ferry service across the Newport Harbor between Balboa Island and the Balboa Peninsula. Before starting the ferry service, Beek owned The Ark. The Ark consisted of a giant rowboat with a small engine which Beek used as his first ferry vessel. The Ark carried oars in the event of engine failure. There was no regularly scheduled service, and customers telephoned Beek when they needed a ride across the harbor.

In 1919 Beek charged 5 cents per person. Three years after commencing operation, Beek built the Fat Ferry. This vessel held 20 passengers. Beek later built a small one-car barge which the Fat Ferry pushed across in front of it.

In the 1950s, Beek built three double-ended wooden boats for his ferry service: the Admiral, the Commodore, and the Captain. These three boats remain in service and have transported over two million persons. Each ferry holds three cars and 75 people. As of 2021, the Beek family charges $1.25 per adult, $2.25 per vehicle, $.50 for children ages 5–11, $1.50 for adults on bikes, $.75 for children on bikes, and $1.75 for motorcycles. Children under the age of 5 are free.

The ferry boats need constant maintenance, but this does not usually interrupt service. For two weeks in 2008, the ferry service shut down for an extended period, for the first time in 50 years, to rebuild the automobile ramp leading to the boats.

Currently, Beek’s three sons run the business, which has been in the family for nearly 100 years.

The sunset was fabulous! We hit the harbor at a perfect time.

Perfect time for photos!

The Pavillion was lit up and active.  Today was a far cry from the 1920s when it served as a dance hall for most southern California!

The beautiful Balboa Pavillion dance hall of the 1920s is still an imposing structure.

Colleen snapped a shot of us, and of course, the air was blowing, and hair was flying!  Mary and I usually do not have horns!

We are enjoying the ride!

Colleen and I got our picture taken by Miss Mary!

To the West, the ocean was on fire, and you could almost hear the hiss as the sun sets into the water!

The sunset was amazing.

We made it to the island and began our mile-long plus walk; it was disappointing based upon previous years, but we may be just too early; we will try again in a few weeks!

We were too early, OR COVID did in the decorating this year?

We stopped the walk early and returned to the car via the main street that crossed the island.  Ciao was open, so we decided to have a glass of wine, and we could not ever pass up dessert!  Mary and Colleen got the giggles, and they were infecting me!  We had a great time!

We stopped and had some wine and dessert before returning home.

We were home by 9:30 PM just in time to attempt to watch a movie for Halloween. Hocus Pocus was on for a while, and then either it went off, OR we fell asleep; we will never know! We took the side streets home, avoiding the freeways.

We are done for the day; say goodnight Gracie!

Time To Decorate For Halloween!

For Halloween, we are dressing up as almonds. Everyone could tell we were nuts.

At 2:00 AM, the clouds opened up, and rain poured down.  It finally stopped at 4:30 AM and we had received a lot of water!

Mary retires in seven weeks and I have been retired 14 Years, 6 Months, and 16 Days!

We got into the Swim Spa at 5:30 AM after making sure the sky was free of clouds.  We had 1 1/2 inches of rain last night!  The sound of the rain needs no translation!

My math teacher said, “Pie Are Squared,” and I told him, “No silly, Pie Are Round!”

We both have decorations that will be deployed in the new house. Today is free, so we are going to decorate, and that means I must go up into the attic above the garage and pull out several boxes. I think this will require assistance from Colleen.

We already did our first Halloween event at Roger’s Gardens.  We are having loads of fun with the holiday seasons upon us!

The skeletons were scared of these two!  Why are skeletons so calm? Because nothing gets under their skin

Mary zoomed at 7:30 AM, and I finished the Daily Diary!  It was now 8:45 AM, and Colleen was off doing errands!  I found an ancient family tree at my aunt’s house many years ago.  I had it at Los Alamitos and wanted to put it up at Casa Valencia.

Colleen took the old document to Michaels, and they decided a $200+ frame and special glass was needed to preserve the writing.  It has my father’s and grandfather’s birth and death recorded, plus my three aunts on dad’s side of the family!

It is a treasure of family information!

First things first, we had to find all the decorations.  Remember, we are combining our stuff this year and putting them into a new home! That should be fun finding new locations!

Colleen and Mary decided to fly last year’s broom around the backyard while making a sharp turn to the right, and the engine exploded.  No one was hurt!

I needed to ask, “Why did the broom decide to go to bed?  He was getting sweepy”  That was pretty bad but I did outdo myself because I asked, “What is in a ghost’s nose? Boo-gers.”

The girls tried a test flight, and we had a problem! They called AAA.

I told the girls about the little broom who was curious!  Why was I booed and who threw the half-eaten cupcake?

Mommy broom and her child are walking outside.
Child: “Mom, how did you and dad make me?”
Mom: “Oh, we swept together.”

Meanwhile, I rolled in boxes of decorations!  Now we will go through the process of opening them up and seeing where we ought to put stuff.  Thank goodness Colleen is here; she is pretty talented!

Halloween is coming!  What is behind box number two?

Mary and Colleen began the process, and Colleen decided to refresh an old Halloween Pyramid which had been boxed up for years.  It is looking pretty good now!

Some of our combined decorations have been around for decades!  The Halloween Pyramid needed some serious work!

Christmas pyramids (German: Weihnachtspyramide) are Christmas decorations that have their roots in the folklore and customs of the Ore Mountain region of Germany but have become popular internationally. They comprise a decorated pyramidal outer frame with candle holders and a central carousel with a rotor at the top, driven by warm air from the lit candles.

The carousel was decorated with nativity scenes and other Christmas figures such as angels and wise men and worldly motifs such as mining folk and forest scenes.

Generally, Christmas pyramids are made of wood and based on four- to eight-sided platforms with a long pole in the middle serving as the axle. The entire apparatus tapers above and which supports any further platforms. Inside in a glass or ceramic support is a driveshaft onto which at least one platform is attached. The figures, which stand on the platforms are also traditionally made of wood.

Christmas pyramids take various forms from intricately carved miniature houses with pitched roofs to large multi-level structures that simply display the carved figures. In many cities in the Ore Mountains there are large Christmas pyramids on the Market Square at the Christmas Market or in other locations associated with Christmas hustle and bustle.

Most of the pyramids demonstrate nativity scenes. They include the story of the Christ child being born, of shepherds and wise men visiting the child, and of angels rejoicing in heaven. The nativity scene often is placed on the most extended shelf at the bottom of the pyramid, while a pine cone or a star would crown the top.

The girls had a plan; after work, we met Robin at the Outlets Of Orange.  We got there a little early and went to a restaurant to have a glass of wine.

The Tremendous Trio tries three tantalizing tidbits.

I saw a pretzel on the menu.  I figured out they were the size of the ones at Disneyland; wrong!  They were gigantic!  We ordered three, and Robin took one and a half home with her!

The pretzel that ate Detroit!

Off to the Outlets Of Orange, an open-air outlet mall in Orange, California, in central Orange County developed by The Mills Corporation and now owned by Simon Property Group.

I stayed outside and guarded the exit so they could not come out with too much stuff!

There were some interesting stores and restaurants there, but I was not up for anything after the little snack we had!  I should have known but I did not look at the price when I ordered them; fourteen dollars each!  We could have used them for boat anchors!

It smelled delicious as we passed the establishment!

We headed for home and continued decorating.  Around 8:00 PM, we three headed to the swim spa, the first time Colleen had used it.  We sat in there for 45 minutes and discussed today and the plans for tomorrow.

The house is coming along just fine!

I worked so hard today that I lost some more weight!  I mentioned to Mary that we should ask the skeleton for dinner because I love to hear him say, “BONE appetite.”  I find that that HUMERUS.

We all crashed before 10:00 PM; the swim spa worked its magic!

I am getting old!  I remember when Halloween was the scariest night of the year. Now, it’s Election night.

It’s was late, and tomorrow is a full day of doctors and contractors.  Good night all!

An Interesting Day

Since it is Monday, you get to hear another of my favorite songs! The theme song from Moulin Rouge.  I found the lyrics daunting.

Moulin Rouge is a 1952 British drama film directed by John Huston, produced by John and James Woolf for their Romulus Films company, and released by United Artists. The film is set in Paris in the late 19th century, following artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec in the city’s bohemian subculture in and around the burlesque palace of the Moulin Rouge. The screenplay is by Huston, based on the 1950 novel by Pierre La Mure. The cinematography was by Oswald Morris. This film was screened at the 14th Venice International Film Festival, where it won the Silver Lion.

Mary went off to work today, leaving Colleen and I alone; oh oh, this could be not good.  However, Colleen went to get her nails done, and I finished the party website on Saturday.

We went to Cerritos and assisted Irene in getting a new computer!  The Apple store was crowded, but we had made reservations, so we got right in.

Irene gets the macine powered up by the Apple technician!

On the way, Mary called and was only working half-day, so we hatched a plan to get the computer and meet Miss Mary at The Fish Company.  It worked; the four of us had lunch.

We had a great seat and enjoyed our meals!

Colleen drove the Silver Fox, took some oysters to Vicky, and then dropped off Irene at her home in Long Beach.  Dr. Mary and I took Precious and went by Diane’s delivering clam chowder to her and David.

We decided to batten down the hatches for some reason since the weather forecast said it would rain later on in the week.    We called Jeff and visited him across the street. We had a good visit and then headed back home.

Walking home!

It started raining within an hour of us getting home.  Mary decided to walk in the rain and  I caught a quick picture of Dr. Marry doing her famous “water avoidance dance”.  Graceful is one word that should not be used!

…and she did not spill anything from the packages!

Within a few minutes, we heard a “boom”; here comes the rain and lightning! We all got home at the same time.

We took a load of videos, and here is one of interest!

Well, the weatherman was wrong again.  It came up a ferocious storm scaring poor Scout half to death.  He barked and howled at the lightning and thunder but to no avail, it kept on coming.  We sat on the patio and watched the display. It was raining cats and dogs, and I fell in a poodle.  I did ask Colleen and Mary, “Why don’t sheep shrink when it rains?”

We finally crashed, thinking that sitting in a tub of water in a lightning storm would not be a wise thing to do!

At 2:00 AM, I heard the rain coming down in buckets, and we had almost 1.5 inches of rain in the middle of the night!  It was raining harder than a cow pissing on a flat rock. By 5:00 AM, it was all gone!

Good night all and to all a good night!

Sunday And We Be Pooped!

Perseverance is the hard work you do after getting tired of doing the hard work you already did.

Our eyes did not open until after 8:00 AM since we were up past midnight.  We walked through the house and back yard and were amazed at what a great job Armstrong Productions did; the place was spotless.  We even had a cup of coffee on the patio with Colleen and admired our decision to have it catered!  Yeah us!

Spotless!

We moved in slow motion most of the day!  It was well worth it!

So true!

Since last Wednesday, the sprinkler systems have been off as we did not want a wet dance floor, so we hand-watered everything this morning.

Making sure we have plenty of water for the tiny flowers as it will be in the 90s again today.

We told folks NOT to bring gifts as we were already running out of room. They came bearing gifts anyway! Combining two households after living in our homes for three decades was a difficult task.

Gift list was complex!

Mary gets such a great look on her face when she is happy.  The gifts were eclectic and caused a lot of smiles!

“What could this be from Len!”

We examined every card, and several were hand-made by our artist friends; fantastic work and a joy to behold!

Mary checks the gift list.

Colleen gets down to work disassembling the centerpieces and removing the batteries until we use them next time.  We had fifty-plus batteries to put away!

Colleen disassembles the centerpieces.

Robin stayed over last night to help, and she stayed until 1:00 PM laughing and giggling with the girls.

Always a smile!

The three of us, Collen, Mary, and I, went to Charlie’s soccer game.  Son Joe is the coach (Charlie is right behind him).

Soccer in La Habra in 99-degree weather.

We got into the frig and found a load of delicious left-overs from last night, including the filet-mignon pieces and several sliders, plus we did more damage to the Chinese food from Friday!  We hit the sack early! We were done for by the time we got home.

D-Day (D for Dance)!

Dance like no one is looking!

We were up early and doing last-minute panic things like checking the wiring, lining up the soft drinks, and going to the store for fire extinguishers!  If you want a peek ahead of time, look here, Mary & Paul’s Dancing Under The Stars.

My son came over and assisted with the lighting and pumps in the pool.  In the afternoon, my grandsons entered the scene, providing the much-needed muscle.  The girls flitted about making sure everything was perfect!

The day begins!

Dusk has arrived, and the dancers will be showing up early; they always do! We hope Donna and Bob are first so they can test the floor!

The sun begins to set, and guests will be arriving soon.

7:00 PM sharp, the orchestra fires up, and the brass sounds so very good!  The attendees are amazed at how dance music is so easy to listen to, and the horns add so much depth to the sound!

Nine Carat Gold sets up for the music!

Eighty people joined us this evening.  You can see the details on our website at Mary & Paul’s Dancing Under The Stars.

We heard out favorite start-up and raced to join the fun.  “Could I Have This Dance” by Anne Murry, circa 1980, is our favorite waltz!

We danced to “Could I Have This Dance (For The Rest Of Our Life).”

The video below is courtesy of YouTube, which happened to have the original recording of the song.

We had over eighty people join us tonight for the shindig.  Chuck Armstrong and his staff did a superb job of serving the hors-deouvers to the crowd.  The bar was busy all night, and many new friendships were formed!  The weather was remarkable; it was eighty degrees at 7:00 PM and stayed in the 70s past 10:30 PM!

Eighty plus family and friends joined the fun.

My girls got together for a quick shoot: two granddaughters and two daughters.  We were missing Michele, but she was out dancing with her husband.  The girls have taken to Dr. Mary, but was is not to love?

Rebecca (Granddaughter), Robin (Daughter, Mary, Kerrick (Granddaughter), and Colleen (Daughter)

Our daughters introduced us one more time, and Bob and Donna gave us a champagne toast!

Donna married us eight weeks ago (She and Bob have been our friends for many years!)

We cut the cake, and Mary did the honors with a surgical skill; duh!

Champagne toast always needs a small cake.

Mr. Scout was in his tuxedo this evening, and the little bugger went table to table introducing himself; it was amazing to watch!

Long-time friends Sam and Brenda meet Scout and Scout was happy to meet them!

Did we say dancers dance?  Bob, Vicky, Mike, and Linda in the first row do the Ten Step Polka.  Mike, Bridgette, and of course, Dr. Mary are right behind them!  All had great fun.

We then did the Cowboy ChaCha, and a lot of our non-dancing friends are all of a sudden interested in dancing!

The ten-step polka gets underway!

The evening was winding down, and papa found a seat and was soon surrounded by granddaughters.

A bevy of beauties surrounded me!

The place had cleared out by 10:30 PM, and we got a chance to relax.  Our catering staff, led by Dr. Armstrong, took care of everything, including washing all the dishes and making everything spotless!  It was a lovely evening.

A special thank you to Colleen, Robin, Bob (son-in-law), and Joe (son) for their help in making the evening a wild success.  We missed Pete and Lisa and of course Sydney, Jan, Marilyn, and Greg but we will do this again!

T-1 And We Are Scrambling!

When you’re the most happening person at the party, it’s time to leave!

Today we get everything 90% ready!  Joe and Colleen assist with the lighting; dancing under the stars requires stars!

Remeasuring everything!

Strings are hung but are they high enough? Look,s to be OK!

We did not have to pull them any tighter!

After the lighting was done, Scout wanted some play time with his brother Joe,  They do kinda look alike!

Scout’s favorite game, playing “Dead Dog”

Joe will have to explain the strange smells to Apollo!

OK Joe, I am awake now. Can I chase you?

Robion does the centerpiece decorations meaning untangling all the wires!

She has patiennce!

Mary works on the party favors and does a surgically precision job!

She did however glue her hands together!

It was late and we were tired so I ordered Chinese takeout for three…dozen!

We could have fed an army.

Step right up we have a little of everything!

“You ordered for how many??”

We turned on the lights and waitred for the fuse to blow… We were lucky!  Thge lights stayed on!

Perfect for dancing

So far so good!

It is going to be pretty!

Love the blue roses

Needless to say be crashed; everyone worked hard to get ready!

More Getting Ready!

I started with nothing, and I still have most of it.

We woke up very early in the morning, and the local rooster even shushed us. Mary took care of the house chores while Colleen and I went to Home Depot to purchase some supplies. We bought a heater, bags of soil to hold down Joe’s lamp posts, electrical equipment, and some plants. We made a list of the items we needed, and we are sticking to it.

The pool looked inviting even at 6:00 AM!

Bright and early in the morning

The roses still had their charge from last night.

The roses are blooming!

We worked until 10:00 AM and then got ready to attend “Girls Night Out” at the Santa Ana Elks. Colleen submitted her application, and Dr. Capps endorsed it. If everything goes according to plan, Colleen will be initiated on her next visit.

We are entering the lodge.

We had a load of fun, and Iris even got her two dozen oysters!

At the Elks for Girls Night Out

The girls were told to wear hats last week because it’s close to Halloween..

Hat day

We had to leave early as the three of us had appointments with the hairdresser.  Yes, I go to a hairdresser, and she is outstanding.  I end up looking handsome and de-boner.

Mary found a friend.

We stop this enjoyable reading to bring you a flash.  Lisa just got married (a real wedding but not the formal one is coming up).  CONGRATS!!!!!

Happy wedding!

After I became beautiful, it was time for the girls to take their turn.  I went to Home Depot again to pick up some last minutes goodies like firelogs, etc.

Mary made us dinner from leftovers, and it was perfect!  She is a little creative at times!

Mary gets clever.

After dinner, we fired up the lights and arranged them following the seating chart. The yard is plenty bright enough, and tomorrow Joe is coming over, and we will light up the dance floor with overhead lights! We expect about 80 people, so we have eight tables for ten.

Light up the night.

We fired up the fire pit to see how much heat it would throw.  At 9:00 PM, it was still 72 degrees, so the fire will be for decoration.

Neat fire for our guests, a dry run!

Colleen puts the finishing touches on some lighting.

Colleen works all the time to help us.

We flipped on the pool lights, and voila, we are ready!

Time for a swim?

We crashed at 9:00 (Mary and I watched “Short Circuit,” a funny movie about a human robot).  Number 5 of a group of experimental robots in a lab is electrocuted, suddenly becomes intelligent, and escapes.

Getting Ready!

What I don’t like about office Christmas parties is looking for a job the next day.

Everything was normal this morning as we became vertical about 7:00 AM after a good long soak in the spa last night!  Mary and I hit the garden and replanted seven barrels surrounding the pool! Thanks to Colleen; she had been a lifesaver! We all had our to-do lists and checked them off.

Scout, The Wonder Dog, was also up early and helping for the party!  He had his hat on so he would not get sunburnt!  He is going to the beauty parlor tomorrow to look fabulous at the party, and he has a tuxedo to wear!

He is looking good!

Mary and I started in the garden making sure all was OK and doing some replanting.  Look carefully; we found another Praying Mantis.  His camouflage was terrific.  His head is triangular (just a hint).

“Careful there, fat boy, I am hungry this morning!”

The yard is ready, and Colleen is on duty as I have a doctor’s appointment in Los Alamitos. Mt Cardiologist wants to see me every six months (whether I need it or not).

The lights and wiring for the band are in the pavilion now, so they should be ready for the shindig.

While in the doctors’ office, we got a panic call from Colleen; the sprinklers came on.  They do not turn on until 6:00 AM, but I realized that we shut the power down to the house when the electrician was here, and that event reset the sprinklers.

Via the phone, Colleen found the sprinkler controller behind the garage freezer, turning it off.  Colleen is quite resourceful!

The truck arrived, and Colleen guided the guys to the backyard and gave them setup and unloading instructions.

Three guys and a lot of stuff!

They rolled the chairs and tables to the backyard, including the bar and buffet tables.  They also brought six 20′ floodlights to light up the backyard when the tables are set up!

The catering team will set there up three hours ahead of the party!

Meanwhile, after I arrived home, I prepared a GFI outlet that I will put under the eves tomorrow morning.  That way, I can split the load and keep all cables off the ground; we want no one tripping!

I love the shop; I have almost every took known to man (and if I do not have one, my sone Joe does).

We were not kidding about the party’s theme, Dancing Under The Stars with Mary and Paul. The guys kept busy as each panel probably weighs in at 75 pounds! The floor is 400 square feet, the size of an oversized two-car garage.

The floor has plastic under it to protect it from moisture.

Mary and Colleen were inside doing things to get ready.  Mary came out and said, “I Quit!”.

Robin came over after work and also helped out getting things ready!  We worked until dark and then decided we were too tired to cook, so off to Rockwell’s for dinner.  We are all getting to be regulars there.

The girls teased our waiter unmercifully, but he got a good tip!  We had a bottle of wine, and we ordered another one.  Well, when he came back, he brought a glass only.  We explained the issue, and ever so quick, Robin said, “That glass is on the house, right?” The manager was behind us and said, “Yes, and please do not come back!”

I reminded everyone, “When you wait for a server in a restaurant, doesn’t that make you the waiter?”

Having two daughters that are so close is a sight to behold. I love them both!  A daughter may outgrow your lap, but she will never outgrow your heart.

We discussed plans for the party, and I reminded them. “Hear no evil, speak no evil, and you won’t be invited to cocktail parties.”

I did remind the girls, “A cannibal is a person who walks into a restaurant and orders a waiter.”

What is this?  We get our picture taken together!  Tell me it isn’t so!  Dang, history is being made! Remember, “You and me make a wonderful WE.”

The best feeling is when I look at you, and you’re already staring.

I pulled out my favorite app and scanned the sky.  I could not see them but they are right above us probably awaiting an invitation!

Back home, I used my new apps to “see” what can’t be seen!

To make things colorful during the party, I bought a box of Cosmic Flame packets, which are chemicals one adds to a fire, and the flames get rather colorful!  Toss an unopened pouch into the fire to enjoy a brilliant display of colorful flames!

They are making pretty beautiful!

We turned on the lights and aimed them correctly. This will be perfect for the dining and drinking area! Colleen checks out the brightness.

We kept folks away from the pool so they would not “fall in!”

The pool lights and the lights in the container plants are perfect.  I think we are ready!

Hear no evil, speak no evil, and you won’t be invited to cocktail parties.

By 10:00 PM, we were all beat!  Robin headed home, and we crashed!

Two Months And Loving It!

I bought a second hand time machine next Sunday. They don’t make them like they’re going to anymore.

Up at the crack of dawn and into the hot water!  We got out at sunrise so as not to scare the birds who often fly by the house.  We decided to walk Five Miles and off we went.  We did not get too far when I spotted a Mantis on the outdoor light.  I careful sneaked up on him and snapped a picture

We was looking right back at me!

Did You Know? The Praying mantis is a most interesting and enjoyable beneficial insect to have around the garden and farm. It is the only known insect that can turn its head and look over its shoulder. … Later they will eat larger insects, beetles, grasshoppers, crickets, and other pest insects.

A praying mantis loves to eat insects – so much so that it doesn’t seem to discriminate, eating both harmful and beneficial insects. In extreme cases when food supplies are low, they may even eat one another.

A young praying mantis eats soft-bodied creatures such as aphids, mosquitoes, and caterpillars. When more mature, it can eat beetles, grasshoppers, crickets, and just about any type of problematic. The praying mantis even feeds on moths at night.

I had a to-do list about three miles long and I was off and running.  Colleen joined us for a piece of toast about 10:00 AM and then the girls got ready to go shopping.

Dianne, Mary, and Colleen took off in a cloud of dust leaving me stranded with File Miles.  I did most of the list and will finish it tomorrow.

We looked at the yard and it was ready to receive the items for the party but alas, seven of the barrels looked pretty bad so it’s off to Roger’s Gardens to fix that problem.

The annual display was in full swing!

We walked around and you can see a lot more on our Halloween Website.  It was fun to see all the “scary things”.  Heck, I was walking with two of them!

Remember this?

Shall we go in or not, that is the question.

Welcome to Roger’s Gardens!

They all look hungry!

No bones about it.

Now the skeletons are scared.  I would be to if I saw these two together!

Careful, they bite.

We departed the scary place and walked around looking for roses and flowers for the back yard for the party.

Want a Snapdragon little girl?”

After buying a bunch of stuff, the girls headed for The Farm House and I drove the car around to the back.  We had a bottle of wine and a cheese plate and kibitzed around for an hour.  Colleen spotted something in the bottom of the wine bottle and it looked like sugar.

Did You Know? Tartrate crystals  are a harmless, naturally occurring byproduct of winemaking; they might taste a little sour if you try eating them. They typically collect on the cork or at the bottom of a wine bottle. They are sometimes referred to as “wine diamonds,” a lovely way to try to convince people not to worry about them.Mary was wearing her new blouse the girls bought her at Disneyland the other day. I was not sure what it said so I took a closer look!  I should have known!

I kiss the princess; she kisses the frog!

Our cheese plate was pretty good and it disappeared quickly.

Dinner?  Nope, we have cherry pue at home.

We got a picture of us.
