Off And Running Again!

Fact: Dolphins are known to be one of the smartest animals on the planet—possibly because they can conserve their brain power. Because they must be constantly on the lookout for predators, the marine mammals have developed a neat trick of maintaining partial consciousness even as part of their brain sleeps. Researchers have tested whether this “half-sleep” negatively impacts the animals’ alertness during the day but have found that even after five days of having their nocturnal alertness constantly tested, they’ve remained as alert and perceptive as ever.

Let’s start today’s Daily Diary with a true story!

As a bagpiper, I play many gigs . Recently I was asked by a funeral director to play at a graveside service for a homeless man. He had no family or friends, so the service was to be at a pauper’s cemetery out in the back country.

As I was not familiar with the backwoods area, I got lost and, being a typical man, I didn’t stop for directions.

I finally arrived an hour late and saw that the funeral guy had evidently gone and his hearse was nowhere in sight.

There were only the diggers and crew left and they were eating lunch.I felt badly and apologized to the men for being late.

I went to the side of the grave and looked down and the vault lid was already in place. I didn’t know what else to do so I started to play.

The workers put down their lunches and began to gather around. I played out my heart and soul for this man with no family and friends. I played like I’ve never played before for this homeless man.

And as I played “Amazing Grace”, the workers began to weep. They wept, I wept, we all wept together.

When I finished, I packed up my bagpipes and started for my car. Myhead was hung low, my heart was full.

As I opened my car door to my car I heard one of the workers say, “I never seen anything like that before, and I’ve been putting in septic tanks for twenty years.”

Apparently I’m still lost.

Los Alamitos, here we come.  We went to the heart doctor, Dr. Vannatta, and he said the old ticker looks very good, including all the valves.  The meds are working well.

We got out of the office at noon and Mary used her favorite phrase, “Let’s go to the club”.  We went to Old Ranch and had a super lunch.  A bowl of vegetable soup for both of us.  I did a bowl of chili and MAry did the club sandwich.  We had a glass of wine and all was well.

I called Charlotte and she was on the course coming into the clubhouse after a few minutes.  She and her golf partner joined us.  It was fortuitous as Doris’s husband is a urologist and knows my urologist very well.  We talked about procedures and methods, and I am a lot smarter now.

A glass of vino with lunch!

Charlotte, my dance instructor!

Doris, friend of Charlotte!

After s fantastic meal, we headed home to work around the house and get ready for tomorrow’s diner party!  We sat in the swim spa for an hour to wind down.

Hello Monday; How Was Your Weekend?

Fact: During Napoleon Bonaparte’s Egyptian campaign, a French soldier discovers a black basalt slab inscribed with ancient writing near the town of Rosetta, about 35 miles east of Alexandria. The irregularly shaped stone contained fragments of passages written in three different scripts: Greek, Egyptian hieroglyphics, and Egyptian demotic. The ancient Greek on the Rosetta Stone told archaeologists that it was inscribed by priests honoring the king of Egypt, Ptolemy V, in the second century B.C. More startlingly, the Greek passage announced that the three scripts had identical meanings. The artifact thus held the key to solving the riddle of hieroglyphics, a written language that had been “dead” for nearly 2,000 years.

We chased wild geese! OK, not really, but we did get halfway to Los Alamitos, and the heart doctor’s office called and waved us off; he had an emergency!   We decided to go on over anyway and pick up the nuclear bone scan results. Mary read the report, and everything was OK; there was no cancer, just a lot of calcification in my joints, which was to be expected.

We went to H&H Nursery and picked up some plants, including another climbing plant for the patio. We dropped by the market and then decided to go home and eat; better food and a great atmosphere!

Yesterday morning, I saw my wife cooking breakfast in her bedroom slippers. I wonder why she doesn’t use the frying pan!

Ah, time to dine.

We talked for an hour, planning the rest of the week.

My view was magnificent.

Upon entering Casa Valencia, Mary was bitten by the cooking bug, hit the kitchen, and made apple crisp, one of our favorites.

I told Mary that Subway is the healthiest fast food available because it makes you get out of the car.

We are transforming apples!

She then turned to the zucchini I had picked and made ten loaves of zucchini bread and a large stuffed zucchini! She cooked for three hours straight, and of course, I pulled in the portable T.V. on wheels to keep her company!

Am I a lucky guy or what?

We went into the Swim Spa and spent about 90 minutes soaking. We both slept like babies the rest of the evening. What direction do chickens swim in a pool? Cluck wise.

Sunday And We Are Off Like A Shot!

Fact:  The earliest historical records show the origin of the dance in Cave Paintings in India, dating back to 8,000 BCE. Even the 5300-year-old tomb paintings in Egypt pinpoint the origin of ancient dances. According to archaeologists, the dance originated 5,000 to 9,000 years ago near modern Pakistan. Some earliest rock art forms suggested that 10,000 years ago, the Bushmen of Africa used to perform some trance-like dance to communicate with the spirit world.

The Elks had a “Paint & Drink” activity to benefit the kids needing backpacks. So far, we have raised enough money for 2,200 backpacks stuffed with school supplies; the Elks are a benevolent organization.

The girls painted a patriotic picture which we will frame and put on the wall.

A bald friend painted rabbits on his head, and they looked like hares from a distance.

When asked why he had painted his front door yellow, Sherlock Holmes replied, “Lemon Entry, my dear Watson.”

They were painting up a storm!

The girls got front-row seats!

The results were amazing!

We returned home about 3:30 after visiting Jan and having a glass of wine. Jan and Robin have hit it off and enjoy each other’s company!

We looked at the clock and decided a 60-minute nap was warranted; it was a great idea since we would be up until at least 10:00 PM dancing the night away!

Time to dance.

Margie Bolsinger brought her baby, which she has owned for over 52 years. The Pontiac Firebird looked like it just came off the production line.

Did You Know? The Pontiac Firebird is an American automobile built and produced by Pontiac from 1967 to 2002. Designed as a pony car to compete with the Ford Mustang, it was introduced on February 23, 1967, five months after GM’s Chevrolet division’s platform-sharing Camaro. This also coincided with the release of the 1967 Mercury Cougar, Ford’s upscale, platform-sharing version of the Mustang.

The first generation Firebird had characteristic Coke bottle styling shared with its cousin, the Chevrolet Camaro. Announcing a Pontiac styling trend, the Firebird’s bumpers were integrated into the design of the front end, giving it a more streamlined look than the Camaro. The 1966–1967 Pontiac GTO inspired the Firebird’s rear “slit” taillights.

Both a two-door hardtop and a convertible were offered through the 1969 model year. Initially, the car was a “consolation prize” for Pontiac, who had desired to produce a two-seat sports car based on its original Banshee concept car. However, GM feared this would cut into Chevrolet Corvette sales and gave Pontiac a piece of the “pony car” market by sharing the F-body platform with Chevrolet.

An original!

Inside we were dressed for California Cruising; a theme dreamed up by Vicky. It was fun to see all the outfits. Mary did the poodle skirt, which made a big hit.   I was going to wear a black leather jacket, but the summertime temperatures prevented that!

We all remember the 1950s and 1960s.  Someone asked, “How can you avoid that terrible curse of the elderly wrinkles?”  Not being shy, I promptly said, ” Take off your glasses.”

The party is on.

They caught me with my smile down; I guess turn-about is fair play! We danced all night long, especially to the rock and roll and our favorite waltzes.

I am trying to figure out what dance to do next!

The table decorations were from Vicky and consisted of paper cars of the 1950s stuffed with candy cigarettes.

Which reminded me,  where should 60-plus year-olds look for eyeglasses?   Duh, on their foreheads!

Vicky outdid herself with decorations.

Remember Aunt Emmie’s First Law: A cigarette placed in an ashtray will go out if you stay in the room; if you leave the room, the cigarette will topple to the table, burn through, and drop to the floor, where it will smolder until it descends to ignite the drapes in the room below.

Mary never smoked; a wise woman!

Smoke break (It’s OK, they are candy!)

Mary finally admitted she is a heavy smoker. She goes through two lighters a day.

Bob and Vicky were coordinating activities during the dance. Vicky has been a fantastic asset to the Starlighter’s Dance Club.

Bob & Vicky

Vicky kept petting this little blue car all night long. We are suspicious!

Vicky with her pet car, Larry!

At the end of the dance, everyone pitched in and assisted in taking the decorations apart.

Taking down the decorations was quick with this group.

We departed about 10:15 PM and were home in fifteen minutes, where we crashed. We put on a lot of miles this evening.

Hello Saturday! How You Be? We Review The Trenching.

Fact: It’s Saturday Night!  Chevy Chase first uttered that famous line on October 11th, 1975.  The sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live would become one of the longest-running series of all time, with over 47 seasons as of 2022.

We were up at 6:00 AM, hit the firepit, and watched the fog moving out over Santa Ana.  The yard is quiet; the only sound is an occasional bird flying by.

The garden progress is slower than I thought, but it will be done correctly.  All the trenches are in for the 6″-8″ wall foundations.

“Keep your eyes on the stars, keep your feet on the ground.” – Theodore Roosevelt.

Almost twenty yards of dirt have been moved to date!

Robin came out to inspect things, and I walked her through the plans for the various vegetable beds.

“Oh my goodness!”

Bob popped in about 9:30 AM, and we had breakfast.  Mary made Egg-McMommies.  We had a bottle of champagne so the day would be good no matter what happened.

Bob and Robin took off to Corona and got a rental car, then back to Los Alamitos to visit the car and get the dash-cam chip.  On the way back, they suggested a Pierogi dinner; we opted for that in three seconds flat.  Eating this many pierogi at once?  That’s my Pierogi-tive.

Did You Know?  Pierogi are filled dumplings made by wrapping unleavened dough around a savory or sweet filling and cooking in boiling water.  They are often pan-fried before serving.

Pierogi or their varieties are associated with the cuisines of Central, Eastern, and Southeastern Europe.  However, they most likely originated in China and came to Europe via trade in the Middle Ages.  The widely-used English name pierogi was derived from Polish.  In Ukrainian, Russian, and Belorussian, they are called varenyky.  Pierogi are also popular in modern-day American and Canadian cuisine, where they are sometimes known under different local names.

Typical fillings include potato, cheese, quark, sauerkraut, ground meat, edible mushrooms, or fruits.  Savory pierogi are often served with a topping of sour cream, fried onions, or both.

Mary and Bob did the cooking, I did the picking, and Robin supervised the drinking; it was a team effort!

While cooking and dining was going on, Alexa got a workout by playing Polish/German music.  We called Hans and Kristen and chatted with them for a while.

We will definitely remember the difference!

Hard at work!

After dinner means wine by the firepit, Robin did not want her portrait this evening; speak to the hand.

The hand speaks!

The chef gets a break!  Bob did a magnificent job with the pierogi dinner.  Mary added some stuffed eggplant to the mix, and the four of us were stuffed!

“Here’s to the chef.”

I had my new shirt on; check the doggie’s face!  Yes, Scout, The Wonder Dog is proudly portrayed on my chest!

I love this shirt!

The fire was beautiful, and we sat and talked until it got dark.  We love our family very much, and making a pierogi dinner was an excellent idea!

Roast them tootsies!

After the kids departed, Mary and I attempted to watch a movie, but Mr. Sandman had a different idea! Tomorrow is Paint With Booze Day and The Starlighters.  Yeah, we get to dance!

Friday Be Here

Fact:  Shakespeare’s Globe is the only building in London allowed to have a thatched roof since the Great Fire in 1666.

Today was supposed to be a slow day, but alas, it turned out to be very busy. Mary headed for the kitchen and made goodies out of the eggplants that our neighbor brought over yesterday. Not only do they look beautiful, but they also taste magnificent.

Mary attacked the eggplants from next door.

Mary had some filling left over, so she put them in little bowls and sprinkled cheese on them, which was also absolutely fantastic. I am blessed to have a beautiful wife and a very talented one.

The leftover filling was delicious!

We worked around the house just doing odd jobs that had been in the planning for a long time, and then suddenly, the phone rang; it was Robin. She had just been hit by a car from the parking lot on seal Beach Boulevard. I jumped in my car and raced over to where she was well; Mary got cleaned up and got into her “doctor suit” if she had to go to the hospital and push her way around, she could.

Robin came home with me, and we had margaritas ready for her. We set for about an hour so she could calm down and then decided we would continue to go to the show tonight, or we had tickets to see Top Gun.

Robin’s #19

Mary hadn’t been to a movie in probably five years, which is about the same as it is for me. Robin, Mary, and I had seats in row seven, which means right in the screen’s center. They were perfect seats. I was going to get a glass of wine and mellow out, but I decided at the last minute I would night. Besides, wine and hotdogs don’t go together.

It was good that I didn’t have any wine because as we turned onto Katella to come home, the police had an alcohol trap and pulled people over. The friendly officer asked to see my driver’s license and asked me if I had any alcohol; I told him no, sir, but I had an extra Diet Coke at the show, and I had to get home.

We saw Top Gun!

When we got home, the three of us set up by the fire pit for another hour or so; I think it was close to 11 o’clock when we finally decided to turn off the gas. It was a lovely visit, and I’m glad we were there to help Robin through the trauma of another accident.

Thursday Has Arrived! Wall Foundation Trenches Are Done!

Fact: All parts of the oleander (Nerium oleander), a beautiful flowering shrub native to the Mediterranean, are poisonous.  Ingesting oleander leaves can cause gastrointestinal, cardiac, and central nervous system problems and possible death.

Another busy day in the Liles household!  We were dressed and ready to exercise at 7:30 AM when we headed for the gym!

After returning home, the first thing was placing the plants so the gardener could put them in the round.  Ed Roberts came by yesterday and dropped off a plumeria (ours died in a traffic accident; I fell into it, and he just snapped).

We planted the new plumeria by the Swim Spa, where it gets shade in the morning and sun in the afternoon!

Did You Know?  All parts of the plumeria are considered toxic, and the sap can cause a rash in sensitive people.  But the alkaloids in plumerias make the plant extremely bitter, and there are no definitive cases of plumeria poisoning.

Indeed!

We took a still on the South-Forty, and the project is coming along!  Tomorrow the start of forms and perhaps the first of 50 yards of concrete may arrive; it is taking shape!

We are going to “Girls Night Out” at 11:00 AM, so we have to pick tomatoes for the ladies in the front and the gang!

The tomatoes below are indeed ripe; they are called Pineapple tomatoes because of their color.  The inside is read and delicious\.  Known for its excellent flavor, particularly among bi-color tomatoes, Pineapple is mildly sweet with low acidity, somewhat fruity, and a hint of citrus.  Its flavor improves towards the end of the season.  Size.  Pineapple tomatoes range from one pound to often more than two pounds in size.

The Pineapple Tomatoes were magnificent.

We met up with Syndey’s family and had a great time exchanging teases and stories.  If laughter is good medicine, we are all going to be well!!

They are very nice people!

The Bobs were harassing each other.  That is always a show to watch>  I should video the process and start the “B ob & Bob Blog” or BBB for short.

Don’t worry if plan A fails; there are 25 more letters in the alphabet.

Bob #1 is pondering the outburst of Bob #2

From the Elks, we went to El Moreno High School and watched Charlie’s game.  He is quite a player, and he caught a fly ball and scored a run!

Score one for the good guys!

Like grandpa like grandson; the poor kid!  Remember this: Parents know a lot, but grandparents know everything.

Great game!

Charlie and Alex are great sportsmen and play several sports.  This game was supposedly the last game of the season, but that may change tomorrow!

Do not worry; he caught it!

We watched a movie and then decided the Swim Spa was needed to pass the time before the moon came up.

After an hour in the spa, we sat by the firepit for another ninety minutes and watched the big moon.

I was snoozing by the fire.

The pictures does not do it justice.

Super moon!

Along came photoshop!

What a fantastic sight!!

Time to crash!  We did!

One More? Come On ; Run Out Of Film!

Fact: Baby Ruth bars weren’t named after the baseball player.  Despite how similar their names are, Baby Ruth bears no relation to Babe Ruth.  The chocolate bar was named after Ruth Cleveland, daughter of President Grover Cleveland — assuming you believe the company’s official story, that is.  The treat was introduced in 1921, 17 years after Ruth Cleveland’s untimely passing from diphtheria at age 12 and 24 years after the former President left office.  The Great Bambino, meanwhile, had become the first person to hit 50 home runs in a single season the year before.  The Sultan of Swat went so far as to end up in a court battle with the Curtiss Candy Company after he licensed his name to a rival confectioner, but the 1931 ruling wasn’t in his favor.  Baby Ruth’s connection to America’s pastime has only grown since then, and in 2006 it was even named the official candy bar of Major League Baseball for three years.

Dang, having to get up at 5:30 AM was horrible.  I went into the bathroom, took one look at myself, screamed, and ran back to bed and jumped under the covers while yelling for Scout to protect me from the giant ugly monster.

Pardon me, where can I find the “black Lagoon?”

My psychiatrist told me I was crazy, and I said I wanted a second opinion.  He said okay, you’re ugly too.

On our way to the hospital, we stopped at Total Care and got the results from yesterday’s scan; it verified that Paul is older than dirt.  Everything is calcified, but on the bright side, there is no trace of the “C” disease!  Yeah!

Around the corner to the hospital, we careened, arriving two minutes before our appointment time.

I went to the first doctor I saw, who was an ENT doctor, and said, “Doctor, I think I’m a bit hard of hearing.” The doctor replied, “Can you describe the symptoms?” I said, “Sure.  Marge has blue hair; Homer is fat and bald”.

Yes, I really did!

I went in at 9:00 AM and got my radioactive shot.  On my way back to the waiting room, I was casting my own shadow.  The radioactive stuff is quite powerful.   I thought to myself, “If I wear a radioactive belt, I might end up with nuclear waist.”

I suggested we go to Gourmet Pie & Cafe on Katella, which was a good suggestion.  Mary did the healthy thing while I splurged and went for a chili size.

A fantastic assortment of foods and plenty of it!

From there, we went to Hobby Lobby and picked up some 4th of July decorations that were 90% off!  Thank you, Colleen, for the hint!

We then ran my Ralph’s and picked some ice for the ice chest and our remaining breakfast.  Then across the street to go shopping for sweatpants for Paul; it’s much easier than removing the jeans with all the metal in them.  Besides, I looked sexy, like a big black bag filled with various incendiary pillows.

We then made it to Chico’s, looking for a sweat outfit for Mary; no luck.  We tried Khol’s and finally Burlington Coat factory.

We had twenty minutes to kill before the 2:00 PM appointment, so off to Old Ranch, where  I changed clothes and we had a glass of wine.

Back to the hospital with horn blaring; we had to be there at 2:00 PM.  Then it came to me in a flash!  Where can you find radioactive turkeys?  Chergobble!

A bone scan or bone scintigraphy is a nuclear medicine imaging technique of the bone.  It can help diagnose several bone conditions, including cancer of the bone or metastasis, location of bone inflammation and fractures, and bone infection.

The scan took twenty minutes, but I had a  lot of gas, so I asked the doctor for something to help me!.

After the scan, we took off for H&H Nursery, where Mary filled the car’s back seat with planting treasures.  I know what we will be doing after Girls Night Out!

Now life gets serious; we aim the Silver Fox toward Patty’s Place, and off we go in a cloud of dust!

Robin asked me what a true optimist is, and I said, “A true optimist is a guy who falls off a skyscraper and, after 50 floors, thinks to himself – well, so far, so good!”

Meg is a new waitress at Patty’s Place.

Robin joined us at 4:00 PM for an early dinner, and we dined on steak and wine.  Mary went next door and got a “Philly Cheese Steak” for Jan; we will drop it off on our way home.

We had a wonderful dinner!

We told Robin about our day, and she was amazed that we did so much; we were amazed also!

If you see me talking to myself, move along.  I’m self-employed; we’re having a staff meeting.

Yup. just us!  I love that girl!

At the end of the evening at Patty’s, Mary informed me not to let my mind wander too much.  It is too small for me to let it out alone.

We stopped by home to let Scout in the house and take the goodies inside.   Mary needed to go inside quickly so the ol’ pack horse brought everything inside.

I brought everything in after getting home.

From there we went to Jan’s for a glass of wine and a quick visit to bring her the Philly Cheesesteak!  A cheesesteak is a sandwich made from thinly sliced pieces of beefsteak and melted cheese in a long hoagie roll.  A popular regional fast food, it has its roots in the U.S. city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Look great but loaded with calories!

It was still early, so we fired up the firepit and sat outside until 10:00 PM and watched the super-moon!

Burn baby burn!

Did You Know? In 1979, the term ‘supermoon’ was penned by an astrologer called Richard Nolle. His definition of the phenomenon was a full moon that takes place within 90 percent of its closest approach to Earth. Later on, this has also been approved and adopted by the American space agency NASA.

We crashed soon thereafter!

Take A Picture Already!

Fact: A U.S. constitutional amendment was proposed in 1893, suggesting the country be renamed “The United States of Earth.” Another failed amendment a few years prior wanted to abolish the presidency and install a “Roman-style triumvirate.” As if the United States needed any more comparisons to the doomed Roman Empire!

Bright and early, we headed for the Total Care imaging center, where the CT machine awaited my arrival.  I drank this stuff the technician called “Love Potion #9”.    From the song, I realized what I was drinking!

“She bent down and turned around and gave me a wink
She said, “I’m gonna make it up right here in the sink.”
It smelled like turpentine; it looked like Indian ink
I held my nose, closed my eyes; I took a drink!”

The potion was not too bad, perhaps like a weak lemonade but thicker?  Mary timed me, and it went down in less than ten minutes!  After an hour of the Love Potion #9 mixing around in my tummy, I was ready for “the machine.”

Did You Know?  Computed tomography (CT scan or CAT scan) is a noninvasive diagnostic imaging procedure that uses a combination of X-rays and computer technology to produce horizontal, or axial, images (often called slices) of the body.  A CT scan shows detailed images of any part of the body, including the bones, muscles, fat, organs, and blood vessels, and CT scans are more detailed than standard X-rays.

In standard X-rays, a beam of energy is aimed at the body part being studied.  A plate behind the body part captures the variations of the energy beam after it passes through the skin, bone, muscle, and other tissue.  While much information can be obtained from a standard X-ray, a lot of detail about internal organs and other structures is not available.

In computed tomography, the X-ray beam moves in a circle around the body, allowing many different views of the same organ or structure.  The X-ray information is sent to a computer that interprets the X-ray data and displays it in a two-dimensional (2D) form on a monitor.

I was in the hospital but not “sick”!

After the procedure and in my very weakened condition, Mary took me to Old Ranch for lunch, and I was starved after fasting since 11:00 PM last night.  We shared a Cheese Quesadilla and a sandwich; yes, with fries.

We had our private air show.  Three C-17s flew right by up, making magnificent turns over the gold course.

Lunch with a view!

We are talking a few hundred feet above the parking lot when we said up close.  Our wine glasses even moved.  It was quite a show!

Up close and personal!

We headed home to check on Scout the Wonder Dog as he stayed outside with our contractor.  After the fly-by, we went to the gym for our bi-weekly workout.  I was still favoring the leg, so I did about 80% of my regular exercises.

When I had my knee operation, Scout was there to take care of me; I remember it well!

Nurse Scout is on duty!

The backyard is torn up!  I am sure it will be beautiful when done, but now, it is a mess.

More river rocks were discovered!

It will look better than this when it is done because I have learned!  We will have a wide distance between the beds,  the beds will match the wall already in existence, and the large bed will house corn and watermelons since it will be over six-feet wide.

The beds were just tall enough to sit on and do the gardening activities.

Mary made muffins for the guys tomorrow, and we watched a Sam Elliot movie entitled “The Hero,”  which was good.

Lee Hayden is an aging Western actor with a golden voice, but his best performances are decades behind him.  He spends his days reliving old glories and smoking marijuana with his former co-star-turned-dealer, Jeremy until a surprise cancer diagnosis brings his priorities into sharp focus.  He soon strikes an exciting, contentious relationship with stand-up comic Charlotte, and he attempts to reconnect with his estranged daughter, Lucy while searching for one final role to cement his legacy.

We finally crashed at about 10:00 PM as we had to be in Los Alamitos at 8:30 AM for another full-body bone scan.  No more pictures, please!

Posted in Doctor | Comments Off on Take A Picture Already!

Just Monday!

Fact: Lion roars are the loudest of any other big cat.  Their roars can reach 114 decibels (the same loudness as a chainsaw) and be heard from as far as five miles away.  This is because lions have a square and flat-shaped voice box, whereas other big cats in the pack have a triangle-shaped voice box.

The first thought of the day: I thought growing old would take longer.

We had to get up early today and Cook because Zachary is coming over around noon to help us move some furniture.  Mary found a recipe for eggplant lasagna.  Kelvin, our next-door neighbor, brought us over some beautiful eggplant, and we want to ensure we used it.

What is a huge henhouse called? An Eggplant.

Eggplant lasagne is being prepared.

Once the eggplant is cut up and breaded, it has to be baked on one side and then on the other before the other ingredients are added.  It took Mary most of the morning to get all the components together and ready to do the final baking.

Loads of steps on the way to becoming a meal!

Well, Mary was baking, I did some odd jobs around the house, including putting batteries in a couple of our outdoor clocks and planting the new mint, which will replace the old mint that grew too big and too leggy.

Cook baby cook!

The meal looked beautiful, so we put it in at 11:30, thinking Zack would be here at noon.  Around noon Zack called and said he would be tied up at work for a little bit, so we did not see him until almost 1 o’clock.

By 1:00 PM, Zack didn’t have time to sit and have lunch because he had to be at the bank at three over near his work, so he just popped into the car and drove to Jan’s house directly.  Zack knew the way because he and Becca took dance lessons from Jan prior to their wedding.

Into the oven one more time.

The construction project is still underway.  We have at least four more trenches to go back to front and then to trenches across the front but not quite as deep.  We are beginning to see the rock that I predicted would be there because this property used to be on a riverbed many years ago.

A jellyfish has existed as a species for 500 million years, surviving just fine without a brain. That gives hope to quite a few people.

The excavation is still underway.

The trencher does a great job, but some of these rocks must be dug out by hand and moved away from the trenches.  Dan, a friend of Gary, does the heavy work.  Dan is a very nice young man.  I say young, he is 50 years old, but he’s an extreme conservative like us; good guy.

The riverbed rocks are starting to show up.

Zack and I went over to pick up the portable bar at Jan’s house.  Zach knew where the house was because that’s where he and Rebecca took dance lessons for the wedding.  The bar is solid wood and very heavy.  Mary and I applied furniture oil to most of it.  You can see in the bottom left-hand corner the before and after results.

The bar is on rollers, and it’s relatively easy to move, but wait until you see it open up.

Jan gave us her patio bar!

With it opened up, it’s a full bar with a marble top.  I ordered a waterproof cover for it made out of the same material we use for our outdoor furniture.  Remember, Measure once, cuss twice!

It’s a beautiful piece of furniture that Jim and Jan used for parties at their house for many years; we will put it to good use in our new home.

Amazing!

The day was in the high 80s, so in the afternoon, the breeze started to develop; Mary, Scout, and I went to the fire pit and enjoyed a glass of wine while the sun took its nightly dive into the Western Ocean.

Mary, Scout, and I sat by the fire for hours.

Scout asked the question: “I think the reason you are born with two hands is so you can pet my head and my butt simultaneously!”

The world’s best antidepressant has four legs and a wagging tail and comes with unconditional love.

We sit outside long enough for The Moon trips across the sky.  Well, we set out there while  Mary made several phone calls to old friends from her work, and we’re going to set up a party to celebrate Mary’s retirement.

The moon was rising; so was are wine content!

We were looking at the moon, so I pulled up the iPhone and selected the night sky app.  If the atmosphere were removed, this would be our view of the moon, and notice the satellite is almost in the line of sight.

I was using my iPhone to see what was behind the moon this evening.

At 9 PM, we crashed and burned.  We didn’t even turn on the TV.

Tomorrow is more medical procedures.  I don’t mind getting old, but my body is having a significant fit.

It Was A Slow Day By Our Standards.

Fact: Sue would have been seventy-one today. Happy birthday!

Thank you family and friends for calling today and checking up on me!

We were up with the roosters this morning and decided no swim spa for a few more days because of the procedure. However, we went to the firepit, had our coffee, and watched the sky toss off the blanket of fog that came in last night. The parrots were out in full force.

They make loud squeals and are the same color as the trees; they are difficult to see!

Did You Know? Feral parrots are common in California’s other major cities. Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Diego all have populations of Red-masked Parakeets, Yellow-chevroned Parakeets, Blue-crowned Parakeets, and Rose-ringed Parakeets, among others.

We worked in the garage for a good hour, and it looks great! I moved the portable rack in front of my car to the patio and put the contents into the He-Shed. We will do the same with Mary’s car this week!

We then turned our attention to the backyard, where I watered everything with Miracle Grow while Mary trimmed and hauled some of the upright stands over to the He-Shed.

Another whirlygig was put to work!

The fog was gone at the day ended up being 86 degrees; time to go to the beach!

It was a beautiful day.

We watched In-Touch Ministries and then headed to Roger’s Gardens to pick up some plants we want to use to replace the ones in our front yard tomorrow. Roger’s had beautiful plants, but they did not have anything we wanted, so tomorrow, we will go to Home Depot and finish off the front yard.

We strolled around Roger’s GArdens for an hour.

It was late afternoon, and we were both hungry, so we stopped at Aces. When we got to the bar and sat down, Adam had our wine poured and ordered lunch for us. They have a magnificent dinner salad, and they throw a large steak on top, which makes for a super meal. Of course, we hijacked the jukebox and played our favorites.

We had an early dinner at Aces Bar & Grill.

At home, we watched a movie because while we wanted to go dancing, the doctor said to stay off the feet for a few days and no exercise.

At the end of the first movie, Bob came over; He is our neighbor from down the street. He was working in his yard a few weeks ago with a pick, and I brought my little rototiller down to him. He has had it for the last month, saving him a lot of work. We showed him our project in the yard and gave him a load of tomatoes.

At 8:00 PM, we went outside and sat by the fire for a good hour before crashing.

Trenching Begins In Earnest!

Fact: Paraskavedekatriaphobia is the fear of Friday the 13th.

I woke up, and no Mary; she was already in the kitchen fixing me a great breakfast.  Robin, Mary, and I did bacon and eggs!  Wow, it was delicious!  Robin had a hair appointment down the street and was off at 10:00 AM.

No lidding.

It is hard to imagine that we were still moving Mary’s belongings into the new home just a year ago.  We had boxes coming out of our ears, and thank goodness we got the She-She ready to receive.

One year ago we were moving into a new home!

Meanwhile, Mary and I surveyed the South 40/  Each of the trenches will be filled with rebar and concrete and will serve as the foundation for the 21″ block wall we will use to sit on while gardening.

One year later, the backyard is being redone!

Based on the roots to date, we have two more days of excavating ahead of us.  I went to Google Earth and pulled up our home as seen in 1985.  Although the resolution is not terrific, it is obvious there were trees in the South-40 35 years ago!

Good-sized three existed at the back of the property!

The excavator is cute and small enough to drive down the size of the house and still powerful enough to dig out the roots.

We found more roots.

Finally, we have our driveway back as the blocks are all in the backyard, along with the bull-nose and concrete.

The blocks are not in the backyard!.

The overflow drain will go into the drainage ditch in the rear of the property should I forget to turn off the water or we get a hefty rain storm.  The trick will be going under the fence and through that foundation.

The central drain from the garden will go to the flood control channel.

I installed another whirligig today, so now we have six of them and two more on the way!

The roots look benign from this vantage point, but some are eight inches in diameter.  The chain saw will be coming out, and our trash cans will be pretty full before this is over.

The roots came from an ancient tree.

It is an exciting machine to watch.  It was a bazillion levers on it; too complex for me to drive e!

Thank you, industrialization.

The guard dog was busy all afternoon!

The king of sleeping, Scout, The Wonder Dog!

Robin returned after the hair appointment with In-An-Out burgers, so we had a feast.   After Robin departed, we watched movies most of the afternoon; one way to keep me off my feet, I guess.  We crashed at 6:30 PM as I was still tired from the procedure; those chemicals they use stay in for quite a while.

Off I Go!

Fact: The first Hershey’s chocolate bars with almonds were produced in 1908 because they were cheap to make.  The nuts took the place of some of the more expensive milk chocolate, which meant Hershey’s could keep the price of the candy at a nickel.

We got up early and made ready for the trip to Los Alamitos this morning.  Robin is coming at 10:30 AM, and the three of us will go over together.

Did You Know?  An angiogram is an imaging test that uses X-rays to view your body’s blood vessels.  Physicians often use this test to study narrow, blocked, enlarged, or malformed arteries or veins in many parts of your body, including your brain, heart, abdomen, and legs.  When the arteries are studied, the test is also called an arteriogram.  If the veins are examined, it is called a venogram.

To create the X-ray images, your physician will inject a liquid called “dye” through a thin, flexible tube called a catheter.  The catheter is threaded into the desired artery or vein from an access point.  The access point is usually in your groin, but it can also be in your arm or, less commonly, a blood vessel in another location.  This “dye,” properly called contrast, makes the blood flowing inside the blood vessels visible on an X-ray.  The contrast is later eliminated from your body through your kidneys and your urine.  Your physician may recommend an angiogram to diagnose a variety of vascular conditions.

We got to the hospital at 11:15 AM  and checked in.  They did NOT tell us the procedure had been moved until 3:00 PM!  We did not leave until 8:30 PM.  It was a long day!

Oh Boy!!

As the day progressed, so did the contractor and he ran into roots, big roots.  The progress was slowed down so the roots could be dug out and they must have been to an older tree located in this area years ago.

We watched progress being made!

In the waiting room, I texted friends and family.  Mary stayed with me the entire time.

I am waiting to be called.

Finally, we went into Same-Day Surgery, where they prepped my/  I never had so many wires connected to me (since the bypass surgery).

So far, so good!

Electrodes everywhere; one good sneeze, and they would be picking up probes and gadgets off the ceiling for a week.   After several minutes of buzzes and other strange sounds, they declared I was “alive and well.”  Hell, I could have told them that!

Stop!  No more wires.

Then the announcement, “You are not scheduled until 3:00 PM!  Didn’t they tell you that at the front desk?” What!!!  I have been lying here for three hours, I almost have bed sores, and I have to tinkle.  Tinkly?  That means I would disconnect and stroll down the hall with my cute little butt cheeks waving in the breeze.  OMG, how awful for the poor nursing staff!

One last text!

OK, I was wheeled into the operating room at 3:15 PM, and Mary could finally eat.  I had not a single bite of anything except air since 11:00 PM last night, and thy trio goes to “The Fish Company.”    I know what Mary said to the girls, “Men have two emotions: hungry and horny; if you see him without an erection, make him a sandwich.”

I was so hungry I could eat a horse and chase the rider.

I was so hungry it reminded me of the old story about a hungry traveler who stopped at a monastery and was taken to the kitchen where a brother was frying chips.  “Are you the friar?” he asked.  The brother replied, “No.  I’m the chip monk.”

Time for lunch at the Fish Company

Meanwhile, I get wheeled into the CathLab, where I met an old friend.  Bill was the CathLab fellow who did three of Sue’s procedures, and he recognized my name and knew Sue’s name.  I told him about the last two-plus years.

I was out in about 90 minutes, and they found nothing interesting!  That’s good and bad!  I was aware of Mary just a moment or so after being rolled into the recovery area.

I was still so hungry I could eat my watch.  But that would be time-consuming.

In recovery at 4:45 PM

Mary assisted me in getting dressed and getting ready to go home, but because of the procedure, I had to stay until 9:30 PM; they did not want the plug to “pop” and bleed out.

Then MAry said, “Can I be your ophthalmologist ‘cause I can’t stop looking into your eyes.”

Robin and Irene stayed the entire time to be there if Mary needed them; we are blessed with good friends and family.  We kept Joe and Colleen appraised throughout the day.

9:15 PM and time to depart for food!

FOOD!  Robin drove home, and I was riding shotgun.  When we got home, Mary put me to bed, and they whipped up some comfort food; mac and cheese with spicy sausages.  I woofed it down like magic; POOF!  For whatever reason, I was tired and went to sleep immediately.  I woke up at about 3:00 AM, walked to the kitchen, and nuked the remainder of the mac and cheese, a late midnight snack.

Busy As A Bee All Day

Fact: You can eat the labels on fruit. They’re totally edible much of the time… they might not taste that good. Still, probably a good idea to peel them off first.

I woke up this morning coughing badly, I think I may have pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis, but it’s hard to say.

I saw an old car drive by and thought of days gone by. I owned a 62 and a 64 chevy; they were quite some vehicles.  I keep thinking about how old I am. I used to be able to do cartwheels. Now I tip over putting on my underwear.

Paul lived in the best of times!

Off to the gym, we went and gave it our all for 50 minutes. From there, we went to Los Alamitos to do a check-in at the hospital and get a COVID-19 test. We got out of there at about 11:15 AM. I don’t find health-related puns funny anymore since I started suffering from an irony deficiency.

They told us Mary had to stay outside since she has not had the shots. She can’t have the shots, so we decided to get a test done this afternoon.

The adult version of “head, shoulders, knees and toes” is “wallet, glasses, keys and phone.

How very, very true!

We went to Girls Night Out from the hospital, where I pigged out because I can’t eat tomorrow morning due to the procedure. The swordfish was outstanding, and a couple of drinks helped things out.  Mary shared her salmon with me!  What, me worry?

Then we ran by the house and picked up Scout for his appointment at the beauty parlor.

While we were there, Gary was moving the “digger” into the backyard; our dirt is HARD!

Ride ’em Gary!

We dropped off the baby at The Clip Joint and headed to Huntington Beach so Mary could get tested.   They have finally figured things out and we were in and out in ten minutes. She got the results via e-mail and of course, no COVID.

Mary looked a little worried when she saw the sign.

We went to Aces for some snacks while we awaited Scout’s procedures to be completed. Aces Bar & Grill is located two blocks away from the groomer.   I got to thinking, which is always a bit dangerous.

While having a glass of vino, my security camera buzzed so I watched the guys begin the excavation of the harden. The initial excavation is for the footing for the walls.

From our security camera.

Returning home, we walked the backyard, picked more tomatoes, and looked at the progress in the new veggie garden.  In about a week I plan to mix some of the old dirt with amendments and see what I get. It is hard and I suspect it is clay.

Scout was so happy that he wanted to play so he got a great scratching.

Such a pretty baby, and so is Scout!

Mary, being an MD, has heard all the medical jokes, so I tried a new one:

Patient: ‘Doctor, my hair keeps falling out. Have you got anything to keep it in?’
Doctor: ‘What about a cardboard box?’

More digging tomorrow!

We watched a movie and talked until 11:00 PM, and then Mary fixed me angel hair pasta with tomatoes, oil, and garlic. It will be my last meal until probably 4:00 PM tomorrow. I hate afternoon procedures! Then I remembered; statistically…. 9 out of 10 injections are in vein.

Just before lights out I told Mary she should embrace her mistakes… so she hugged me.

Errands Day!

Fact: The giraffe has no vocal cords and communicates by vibrating the air around its neck.

It’s Wednesday and that means we are up early and cleaning the house before the house cleaners arrive.  The activity mostly involved the kitchen and office which is where we spend most of our time!

Late morning Mary fixed brunch and I decorated the cottage cheese using blueberries and nectarine slices.

Did You Know? Over 95 percent of all the nectarines that are grown in the United States are from California.

Brunch is served!

After lunch, we went to the Post Office to send out invitations and we doubled back to go to TJ’s for our new supply of Two Buck Chuck!  Next on our agenda was the Orange Nursery where we picked up two flats of herbs, zucchini, peppers, and other interesting items to plant in newly made available spaces.

We will be busy for a couple of hours.

On the way home, we dropped by the shoe store and picked up four pairs of shoes that we had redone.  Some of my shoes are ten years old but with the exception of the soles, are in great shape.  Plus, they are already worn in! Remember, if the shoe fits, get another one just like it.

We departed Casa Valencia again in the afternoon and went to Mary’s old office to get my eyes checked and see her dermatologist who was on the same floor.  We were getting hungry and we did NOT want to go out and eat so we made a beeline for home from Huntington Beach,

Mary dug into the refrigerator and came up with twice-baked potatoes, cabbage, and a large chunk of salmon which we applied herbs to along with a baked lemon.  I thought I had died and gone to heaven!

A fabulous dinner

While Mary was in the kitchen, I rewrote my last will and testament because of the procedure on Friday.  My cardiologist keeps sending me x-rays of his chest. A bit weird I know but it just shows his heart is in the right place.

We talked to my lawyer this morning and the changes I wanted would take too much time so the handwritten document would do 90% of what I wanted. I called the affected parties to let them know what I had done. They understood and were quite happy.

We dined on the patio with a very pleasant breeze and a beautiful view.

After dinner, we walked the backyard to review the progress.  We made some last-minute changes widening the beds by almost twelve inches.  Tomorrow excavation begins to set the footings for the individual bed walls.  It requires either a jackhammer or a trencher; the first is HARD!!  When the first jackhammer was invented it was a groundbreaking innovation!

Progress is being made

The tomato patch is going into overdrive with a bag of tomatoes available every day.

The mini-garden is going crazy with tomatoes.

We wanted to pick some but had no bag so we used the next best thing, Mary’s blouse.

We didn’t have a container for the tomatoes.

She is a good sport and carried almost twenty tomatoes into the house using her blouse.  We had a good laugh.  Then I remembered, that knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad.

Dang, I never thought of it this way; if the tomato is a fruit, then ketchup is a smoothie.

Dang! That top carried a lot of tomatoes.

After our walk around the yard, we crashed and watched two movies, “Any Which Way But Loose” and “Pink Cadillac”.

We are headed for the gym bright and early, then to the hospital for pre-check-in activities, and then Girls Night Out.  Our contractor, Gary, will be here all day and will watch for Scout the Wonder Dog.

Doctor’s Day

Fact: During Europe’s Dark Ages, ca. 476 AD to the 14th century A.D., many diseases were thought to be caused by an excess or plethora of blood.  Bloodletting with incisions or leeches was a cure-all during the time and was so popular that physicians themselves were commonly referred to as “leeches.”

We went to several doctors and set up appointments for the next week.  My lack of caring for myself over the past several years is catching up, but we are tackling them individually with Mary by my side.  I am fortunate to have Mary by my side while going through this series of medical conditions.

Mary checks our schedule and makes appointments.

In the late afternoon, we went to Renada’s and brought dinner for six as we went to Jan’s and met up with Brenda and her mother.  While waiting, we had a glass of wine and some garlic toast!

Awaiting our order at Renata’s

Bob Z.  joined us and became the official photographer for the evening!

Brenda and Bob dancing at the Phoenix Club circa 2016.

Brenda seems to be doing OK but losing a loved one is a terrible thing to have to go through.  Mary, Jan, Bob, and I will be there when needed, and she had “The Gang” who will pitch in anytime they are required.  Brenda’s mother came in from San Francisco to stay with Brenda for a while.

We are gathered together.

After dinner, we pointed the Silver Fox toward home and were whisked away to Casa Valencia, where we sat by the fire for a while before crashing.

I had some time to reflect on my actions the other day and wrote up an apology to Mark.

Dear Mark,

I have been unable to sleep since I demanded you brake off your engagement to my daughter Colleen.  Will you forgive and forget?

I was much too sensitive about your Mohawk, tattoo, and pierced nose.  I now realize that motorcycles aren’t that dangerous, and I should not have reacted that way to the fact that you have never held a job.  I am sure, too, that some other very nice people live under the bridge in the park.

Sure my daughter is only 18 and wants to marry you instead of attending Harvard on a full scholarship.  After all, you can’t learn everything about life from books.  I sometimes forget how backward I can be.

I was wrong.  I was a fool.  I have now come to my senses, and you have my full blessing to marry my daughter.

Sincerely,

Paul
Your future father-in-law
P.S. Congratulations on winning this week’s lottery.

Happy Independence Day! God Bless America!

Fact: The ‘Pennsylvania Evening Post’ was the first newspaper to print the Declaration.  It came out in the newspaper on July 6, 1776, for everyone to see after a local printer named John Dunlap produced copies of the declaration’s manuscript.

Our news should be that slow today (It might help the real truth come out)

No hot tub this morning; we will finish the library, somehow or the other!!  We worked for two solid hours going through the cookbooks and either donating them or putting them to the side if they were vegetarian (standby Michele).

Someone once said.  “Books are the windows to our soul!” In our case, it is the window into our stomachs.

Ten shelves are nicely sorted and grouped.

Mary headed for the kitchen to make the flag cake for the party at Joe’s, and I installed a  new security camera on the She-Shed that encompasses the new vegetable garden.

I told Mary, “In baking, you sometimes need to take whisks.”  Then I added, “A balanced diet is having a piece of cake in each hand.”

We decided we would be better off with three states; Texas, Florida, and everything else except California, New York, and New Jersey.

The cake looks great, and I know the topping is excellent because Mary brought me out the beaters to lick when she was done; yummy!!  This time, she did not have the beaters on the mixer with the mixer still running; we learn as we age.

A flag cake.

I snapped a picture of our flags since it was waving the right way for a change.  The next flag will be Halloween!  Christmas is almost here.

We flew the colors today with pride!!

With the new garden comes birds, so we took Michele Vallari’s advice and procured a series of sold metal whirlygigs.  When we are done, we will have ten of these guys around the backyard, and they are quite attractive and drive the birds nuts.

Our new all-metal whirlygigs are starting to be delivered!

Did You Know?  The word whirligig comes to us from Middle English whirligig (“whirling top”), which is itself from whirling, meaning “to whirl,” and gigg, meaning “(toy) top.”

Today was a fantastic day; it was 75 degrees with a cool breeze!  Watching the fireworks at Joe’s tonight will be fun.

Time to get ready to go!

We took showers and cleaned up, and packed the car for the trip to our Son’s home in La Mirada.  We were ahead of schedule, so we decided to stop at Jan’s and hang out for a while.  We met up with Bridgette and Mike, who was leaving as we pulled up.

Off to Joe and Amy’s to celebrate the 4th.  Join us for fun!

Family Fireworks At Joe & Amy’s, we are blessed with two amazing kids!

We all talked and ate and talked and ate and, well, you know!  We decided we needed a picture of ourselves and our little one.

Family Fireworks At Joe & Amy’s, the cake is about to be carved!

It was time to fly the drone and do the fireworks.   The drone came outside with us, and I flew it up and down the street.  Jow took it way up in the sky as his eyesight is much better than mine.  We took a load of pictures.

The view from 30 feet up!

Joe is setting up, and the boys are on the grass awaiting darkness so the show can begin.  I asked Charlie and Alex, “What do you call a duck who likes watching fireworks?  A firequacker.”  I was booed off the driveway.

On with the show!

Joe is good at fireworks displays.  He has got a flair for it.  Selling fireworks around the 4th of July must be a booming industry!

The show began with a boom!  We all had fun, and even more impressive, Apollo just sat there and watched the whole thing; not even a whimper!

He took it all in stride!

The fireworks were amazing and the amount of fireworks in the area was  mind boggling.

Joe and Amy put on a fantastic show for everyone!

We headed home about 9:30 PM to check on Scout; he was barking but not too severely.  He may have been barking at the country-western channel we left going when we departed earlier.

Mary got the best show of the night as we were driving the freeways and being slightly elevated she got a 360 view of the sky lighting up!

Just Relaxin’

Fact: John Hancock was the first person to sign the Declaration of Independence.  Likely because he was the President of Congress at the time, he signed in a large hand and at the center of the document, according to the National Archives.  His bold signature is where we get the phrase “put your John Hancock” when referring to signing your name.

Into the Swim Spa, we went at 6:15 AM.  The hood was quiet as a church, and only the occasional bird flying over disturbed the silence.  We knocked back our coffee and discussed the day’s plans.  Coffee helps me maintain my “never killed anyone” streak.

I watered the lawn most of the day so we could keep part of it from dying because of construction.

We had a few errands to run, so we started at Jan’s.   On our way out, a man came to the door and asked if we had lost a small white dog.  We went to his car, where his wife was holding this cute baby, and we did not recognize him.  We drove around the block for almost 20 minutes, looking for someone who may have lost a dog.  We talked to several neighbors, but alas, no luck.

We sat with Jan for an hour and just discussed the events of the world plus we got to talk to Vicky!

Our first outing of the day was visiting Jan and bringing her wine and some edible goodies.

We needed corn and to take some things back to Dianne, so Manassero Farms was a mandatory stop.

Did You Know?  The Original Manassero Farms is celebrating over 97 years of three generations of family farming in Orange County.  The farm has become one of Orange County’s best certified organic and conventional farms with four Orange County locations.

We stopped at the local farm and got a bunch of corn on the cob.

We did our delivery to Dianne and David and visited for a few minutes before heading back to Casa Valencia.

Mary got her cookin’ bug and fixed an excellent early dinner.  Corned beef and cabbage (our own cabbage from Casa Valencia Farms).  The cabbage was delicious.

Dinner was terrific, and you would think it was St. Patrick; ‘s day at the Liles’

With a little Mustard Dijon, the corned beef was better than a steak!

Did You Know?  Dijon mustard (French: Moutarde de Dijon) is the traditional mustard of France, named after the town of Dijon in Burgundy, France, which was the center of mustard making in the late Middle Ages and was granted exclusive rights in France in the 17th century.  First used in 1336 for the table of King Philip VI, it became popular in 1856, when Jean Naigeon of Dijon replaced the usual ingredient of vinegar in the recipe with verjuice, the acidic juice of unripe grapes

Mary made twice-baked potatoes; to die for!

The corn came, and after we had our first piece, Dr. Scout, The Wonder Dog, got his sniffer in gear.  We offered him to nibble on the cob and the little devil did his version of the typewriter thing.

Guess who likes corn on the cobb?

He quickly mastered the “pull back the lip and chomp with front teeth” move.  We laughed ourselves silly.

Look at his teeth!

The movie camera had to come out.

The rest of the evening was spent watching movies while Mary ironed my 4th of July shirts.

We went to bed at 9:00 PM and Scout was going wild with the sound of fireworks.  We finally made him jump in bed with us and we spent an hour rubbing him and calming him.  By 10:30 PM we were knocked out and finally, we got some sleep!

Saturday, Time To Get Pretty!

Fact: In folklore, Saturday was often viewed as the best day to hunt vampires, as this was the day of the week when they were restricted to their coffins. It was also believed in the Balkans that if somebody was born on a Saturday then they could see a vampire that was invisible to others, and that these people were the best recruits to become vampire hunters.

We met Robin at the firepit around 6:00 AM and joined her in a cup of coffee.  She was amazed at the heat the pit puts out and also the different types of birds they fly over.  We had several visits from hummingbirds while we say outside.

As we were talking I had a thought. Scientists say the universe is made up of protons, neutrons and electrons. They forgot to mention morons.

After Robin departed for her home we got ready to go get our hair fixed.  I take about 30 minutes and Mary takes about three hours but she is a LOT prettier than me so I understand.

Always a smile!

I picked up MAry at 1:30 PM and we went to the Greek restaurant next door to the salon.  We had a wonderful meal and arranged for the musician who plays there every weekend to come to our home and play for us on Colleen’s Birthday and our anniversary.

We dropped by the house to make senior Scout was OK as we left him outside.  After a quick check, we went to Jan’s house for a quick visit.

We Stayed Home!

Fact: Lion roars are the loudest of any other big cat.  Their roars can reach 114 decibels (the same loudness as a chainsaw) and can be heard from as far as five miles away.  This is because lions have a square and flat-shaped voice box, whereas other big cats in the pack have a triangle-shaped voice box.  Translation: better airflow means a louder roar with less effort!

We strolled into the torn-up yard and tried to picture what it would look like in six weeks.

The garden will be Mary’s hiding place!

We did diddley today, mostly straightening up the house and some cooking.  Mary made banana nut muffins and began work on her world-famous jello cake.

I ordered another remote internet-controlled sprinkler system for the south 40.

Robin popped by after work, and the three of us watched TV, talked, and sat out by the firepit until the sun went down.

We talked about growing older and I shared my newest fine on the internet!

If you are an older senior citizen and can no longer take care of yourself and need Long-Term Care, but the government says there is no nursing home care available for you, what do you do?

You may opt for Medicare Part G.

The plan gives anyone 75 or older a gun (Part G) and one bullet. You may then shoot one worthless politician. This means you will be sent to prison for the rest of your life where you will receive three meals a day, a roof over your head, central heating and air conditioning, cable TV, a library, and all the health care you need.

Need new teeth? No problem. Need glasses? That’s great. Need a hearing aid, new hip, knees, kidney, lungs, sex change, or heart? They are all covered!

As an added bonus, your kids can come and visit you at least as often as they do now! And, who will be paying for all this? The same government that just told you they can’t afford for you to go into a nursing home.

And you will get rid of a useless politician while you are at it. And now, because you are a prisoner, you don’t have to pay any more income taxes! Is this a great country or what?

I’m pretty sure that’s what they said!

We needed a lazy day!  It was lights-out by 9:00 PM.  Robin went to her room and watched a movie and I went to the office and continued work on updating the gardening website.

Girls Night Out, Yeah!!

Fact:The closest state in the United States to Africa is Maine, which juts out further east into the Atlantic than most people realize.

It was hot last night so we opened the front and back doors.  They are security doors with an amazing stainless steel screen that keeps everyone out.    The frame is bolted into the house and it will withstand anyone attempting to break in.

Of course, we have security cameras and motion-activated lights at every entrance to the property.  Plus, Scout the Wonder Dog is ready to chase any unknown people away!

We cool off the house by opening the back and front doors; a great breeze does the job quickly!

We headed to the gym bright and early so we could punish our tired old bodies in the nice air-conditioned comfort of the equipment room. Remember: “Exercise: The joy of flex.”

The word ‘aerobics’ came about when the gym instructors got together and said: if we’re going to charge $10 an hour, we can’t call it “jumping up and down.”

Those weights really provide a workout of the biceps.

How can she smile and be in pain at the same time?

Workout complete; let’s drink!

We departed the gym and headed home to water Scout and take home for a walk.

We talked about the news that was on this morning and there are a lot of STUPID people in this world!

Oh so true!!!

We ordered and are awaiting our delicious meal.  Mary did Swordfish and I did the capellini with bottom feeders.!

Just us!

We had a great time with the gang, loads of laughing and gigging were obvious.

The Gang.

Bob and Mary; a great team!
