Saturday Turned Tragic In The Evening!

A cross-eyed teacher couldn’t control his pupils.

Mary had an appointment from 10:00 AM-3:00 PM, so I am Maryless, I know not what to do!  So I watered the garden, went through the freezer, did some wash, and listened to my computer radio show.  At 1:30 PM, I began putting myself together as I headed east for a 3:00 PM rendezvous!  We plan to do a “Banning Run” to visit Annie, which will give me a chance to visit Hobby City, it’s a long story!

While Mary got ready for the journey to Banning, Scout and I did our couch-thing!

We were both keeping an eye on Mary’s progress!

Mary fixed the medications while I went shopping for the folks.  While ay Walmart, the phone rang, and I answered it. It was Zachary with horrible news.  My son, Mitch, passed away a few minutes earlier.  While we are not sure of what happened, we passed of natural causes, likely a heart problem since he was having severe heart problems.  His was unexpected as I talked to him a few days earlier and asked him to join us for Thanksgiving.

Mitch and I met when he was about eleven years old; he was a neighbor and needed help with his bicycle.  We were great friends ever since.  He married my oldest daughter, the one that decided to become estranged from the family.  After almost twenty years, the daughter sought a divorce, and Mitch was alone.  We grew even closer during this period.  They had two wonderful grandsons, Zachary and Connor.  He was a friend, a son-in-law, and a son to me as I was to him.  My heart is broken. 2020 has not been a good year!

Mitch will always live in my heart along with Sue. It’s hard to express what a loss this was to those who loved him!  I remembered that it is said how difficult it is to loose a child; I now know what they mean!

I notified Mary, and we departed Banning for her home immediately, talking to family members on the way.  We decided to stay home and not go to Zack’s house as we assumed people would be gathering there, and he would be OK.

Mary and I stayed together for a couple of hours after we arrived at her house.  She wanted to make sure I was OK to drive home.  I really appreciated her concern and sitting with me as the shock started to wear off.

It was a long drive to my house as I continued to think of all the terrific times Mitch and we had together.  Remodeling houses, building dune buggies, train rides, Detroit visits, and so many Christmas and other holidays always together.

About Paul

Just an old retired guy trying to finish out my last years on this planet. I lost my best friend and wife in early 2020. I was blessed again by reconnecting with Dr. Mary Côté, a long-time friend. Mary and I got married July 28th, 2021, and are enjoying life together and plan to spend the rest of our lives being a blessing to our friends and family.
