Tuesday And Time To Sleep!

It’s tough getting old!

Today, we spent time working in the garden.  After being away for the weekend, there was a lot of catching up to do.  However, we will be away for two weeks next month, so we have enlisted our house sitters to help and learn some farming skills.

The stick plants have emerged from their winter hibernation and now treat us to beautiful floral exhibitions.

Did You Know? Plumeria is closely related to Oleander, as they both have poisonous, milky sap like Euphorbia. However, each species of Plumeria has its own unique leaf shape and growth pattern.

Smile for the camera!

The Japanese “Yard Long Beans” in the backyard have grown significantly and are now ripe for picking.

Yard-long beans do grow to 3 feet long, although they are usually picked when about 18 inches long.  They are related to black-eyed peas but taste and look like green beans.  They originated in Africa or southern Asia.

They are best eaten when young and tender, about 1 to 1 1/2 feet long.  They are also known as Asparagus bean, dow gauk, Chinese long beans, Peru bean, and Snake bean.

We must go to the internet and figure out how to cook them!

The scarlet runner beans, which thrive in warm weather, have started producing beans now that the heat has returned.  The long winter was not to their liking.

Bright red flowers greet us every morning.

Mary went picking and making an amazing salad to help me get back to my goal weight of under 190 pounds.  Unfortunately, the weekend of indulging in fondue caused me to gain four pounds.

I ordered an induction stove, a single “burner” so we can make fondue easily.  Amazon seems to have everything.

Mary is such a cut-up!

Everything here is from the garden and not more than 30 minutes old.  Yummy!

Did You Know? Salad comes from the Latin word “herba salta” or “salted herbs,” so called because such greens were usually seasoned with dressings containing lots of salt.

Fresh!

I’m thinking of trying some “fried green tomatoes” since we have many of them.  It seems that green tomatoes can withstand being sliced, coated, and fried, and their slightly sour taste goes well with a crispy and salty coating.  Green tomatoes are essentially unripe tomatoes that provide more than just their bright green color.  The real deal green tomatoes have a firm texture and pleasantly tangy tomato flavor that turns sweet when cooked.

They are ready to pick!

Yesterday evening, we dipped in the pool without any clothes on as the temperature was 84 degrees.  Following the refreshing swim, we spent 45 minutes in the hot tub before heading to the airport to welcome Colleen.  She’s visiting to commemorate her 51st birthday and our second anniversary.

I thought about my “son” today and missed him dearly.  He would have enjoyed helping us around the house.   He was just getting to know Joe and together with Zack, it would have been a mighty threesome!  It’s going to be two years ago when he passed.

We had a wonderful time together.

After picking up Colleen from the airport and making a detour through Del Taco, we quickly had dinner before I had to head to a sleep test in Irvine.  I left at 9:00 pm and arrived at 9:30 pm.  By 10:00 pm, I was in bed with my banky and pet stuffed chicken with thousands of sensors attached to my body.  The wire they ran through my right ear and out the left was particularly uncomfortable.

Did You Know? Sleep apnea involves frequent disruptions in breathing during sleep, which significantly reduces sleep quality and contributes to a higher risk of health problems like cardiovascular disease.

People with this common sleep disorder often do not realize that their nighttime breathing is abnormal. Knowing more about the types of sleep apnea, as well as its causes, symptoms, and treatment, can allow people concerned about sleep apnea to take a more active role in improving their sleep and health.
