Saturday; A Day To Rest!

Fact: A flock of flamingos is called a flamboyance.

Today was a zip! We did nothing. We did jump in the swim spa at 7:00 AM and then had a small breakfast. We worked in the office for a while, and at noon we went to Costa Mesa to drop off Mary’s income tax information. On the way back, we made a “meals on wheels” drop at Bill’s place and then at Jan’s before going home.

The flowers are popping up all over!

We stayed at Jan’s and visited for a good hour before going home and crashing. We watched “Eureka” and made it through the first four episodes.

Did You Know? Eureka is an American science fiction television series that premiered on Sci-Fi Channel on July 18, 2006. The fifth and final season ended on July 16, 2012. The show is set in the fictional town of Eureka, Oregon (although in the pilot episode, Eureka was located in Washington – and the origin of a diamond in the episode “Best In Faux” was shown as Eureka, California). Most residents of Eureka are scientific geniuses who work for Global Dynamics – an advanced research facility responsible for the development of nearly all major technological breakthroughs since its inception. Each episode featured a mysterious accidental or intentional misuse of technology, which the town sheriff, Jack Carter, solved with the help of town scientists.

We crashed but read until midnight. At 12:01 AM, I took Scout, The Wonder Dog, out for a midnight pee.

We both watered the grass!

Good night all!

Friday Is Upon Us!

Fun Fact: The feeling of getting lost inside a mall is known as the Gruen transfer – We’ve all heard how casinos are designed to deliberately disorient visitors, causing them to lose track of time and where exactly they are.  But did you know that there’s a similar strategy behind the design of shopping malls as well?  Officially known as the “Gruen transfer,” this phenomenon was named after Austrian architect Victor Gruen, who identified how an intentionally confusing layout could lead to consumers spending more time and money in a shopping venue (though he would later disavow the approach).

I always hold Mary’s hand when we go shopping because I get lost!

We were up at 5:30 AM, but why?  We had no idea except the day was beginning, the sun was rising, and the need for coffee was overwhelming.  The other reason, you ask?  I got to wake up Scout, The Wonder Dog, from a sound sleep!  I “pawed” him and whistled.  He opened one eye, snarled, and went back to sleep.  I woke him up once more, and this time he moved, albeit like an intoxicated quadruped.

Scout will get even!

He followed me to the door, but he made me go out first.  I made coffee for Mary, and we headed to the office for a while.  It was Friday, so I quickly checked to see if the trash truck had gone by; it had not, so I quickly chopped up three more Amazon boxes and stuffed them into the trash cans.

So true!

Our gardener came, and he and I determined that two of the valves’ solenoids were no good, so I ordered them from Amazon.  Tomorrow I will be replacing the units, and hopefully, everything will be back to work, just in time for the heat spell to be over.

Mary started a new puzzle, so she was busy, and The Wonder Dog, Scout, supervised Carlos.  I wandered into the front yard and spotted our first Tulip.  That sucked dang near popped out of the ground.  One day it was a green leaf and the next day a complete flower.

We got our first Tulip today!

The daffy-dills seem to point to the sun with their little yellow faces!

The Daffodils are going crazy.

Mary made a big pot of beans and put them in the crock-pot; they should be ready when we get home.

We got ready about 3:30 PM and headed to the Santa Ana Elks for the “A Night In Paris” Valentine’s Day dance.  The lodge dining area was beautifully decorated, and it seemed red was the color of the night!  Mary washed and ironed my red shirt as it matched her outfit perfectly.

On the way to the dance, I got to thinking! I asked Mary, “If love is blind, why is lingerie so popular?”  Of course, Mary instantly responded with, “For me every morning it’s love at first sight. A mirror is a wonderful thing.”

See our website with ALL the details!

Just us!

Somehow the waiter knew what to do; each of us got a bottle of wine.  It took us about four hours to finish off one and a half bottles; the remains were donated to the table behind us.  We had to drive home.

How did this wine get here?

We needed our pictures to prove we were in Paris!

Did You Know?  Since Eiffel footed 80 percent of the tower’s construction costs, he was permitted to have the structure stand for 20 years in order to recoup his investment before it passed into the hands of the Parisian government, which planned to disassemble it for scrap metal.  Seeking a way to prove the structure’s strategic utility in a bid to save it, Eiffel erected an antenna atop the tower and financed experiments with wireless telegraphy that began in 1898.  The value of the tower in sending and receiving wireless messages, particularly for the French military, caused the city to renew Eiffel’s concession when it expired in 1909.  Today, more than 100 antennae on the tower beam radio and television broadcasts worldwide.

To Paris.

Bob and Donna are celebrating 43 years of marriage!  Do they look happy or what?

Bob and Donna celebrate 43 years of being married.

Our gang was well represented this evening.  Mike and Linda had a small problem.  Mike had a wardrobe malfunction; his belt broke, and they were going to leave.  Paul to the rescue!  We headed to the men’s room, where I donated my belt to Mike!

Mike and Linda kept everything interesting.

I gave Mike my belt, thinking my pants would stay up; no such luck.  When I walked to our table, people pointed and said things like, “Hey, look, there is droopy-drawers.”

Being quick-witted, I gathered three dinner napkins and tied them together.  Our waiter found some duck tape (I know, duct tape), and we made a make-shift belt.

In a matter of moments, I was a trendsetter!

We stopped and checked with the ER, Linda, and I was approved for dancing but only slow dances.

Mike did not know I was into fashion design!

Mary and Bill were at the next table, and he wanted me to make him a unique belt just like mine.

Nary and Bill had the next table over.

Beverly was overwhelmed at my design and offered to sell them on E-Bay.

Georg and Beverly.

Around 9:30 PM, we retired and headed home, but we made one more stop!  We dropped by Aces Bar and Grille and met some friendly folks while having a nightcap.  We danced a little bit and headed for home about 10:30 PM, only two miles away.

Scout met us at the door tapping his front foot as if to say, “Where in the blazes were you!  I said to be home at 10:00 PM sharp, or you two are grounded”.

Wind Wind Go Away!

Fact: An instrument to measure wind speed is called an anemometer. A gale is officially defined as a wind of between 32 and 63 miles per hour, and a wind blowing from 4 to 31 mph is a breeze.

Our anemometer registered zero this morning. The wind blew the device off its steel post, landing in the bushes.

As I opened the front door, there, laying out in all its glory, was the van cover. I was happy the tie-down got caught on the back wheel, or otherwise, the cover might have ended up in San Pedro!

Oops! The van is now going topless!

We let Scout, The Wonder Dog, out, and he rambled to the back yard, took his stance, and was amazed when his tinkle came back to visit him! He jumped up yelped as if to say, “What’s going on here??? It’s raining!”   I took the time to explain the term to him, “Pissing in the wind!”

The intelligent dog he is, he faced the wind (remember he is a dog), assumed the position, and let loose with a mighty flow. The neighbors, two doors down, probably did not appreciate it as the wind carried his contribution up, up, and away! I took a mental note in case I have the urge on a windy day!

The wind was ferocious!

We enjoyed our morning coffee; thank you, Mr. Keurig! I checked, my blood type is coffee. After our second cup, Mary and I figured out what Einstein was attempting to say!  The coffee worked well, I had a pulse soon after finishing the first cup!

Indeed

The wind dried out everything, so I headed to the backyard, phone in hand, and punched the “water all” button.  Immediately the irrigation valves burst into action, and water flowed into the dry planters. One could almost see the tiny flowers smile and slurp up the delicious H20!

Mary loves were Spring(ing) frogs!

At 10:30 AM, we began getting ready for “Girls Night Out.” Mary went first into the shower. I diddled around outside, looking for more wind-caused modifications. I was amazed to find the solid closet doors I had stacked against the house had blown over; these suckers were 60-90 pounds each!

We dropped by Jan’s for a fly-by before heading south on the 55 Freeway. We were first there, so we got the hear the specials early. Mary did the Italian Wedding Soup, and I attacked the Swordfish Special.

Fact: Swordfish are ectothermic animals, which means they are reliant on external heating methods when it comes to controlling their internal body temperature. However, these animals have special organs right next to their eyes for warming both their eyes and brains. The ability to heat their eyes improves the quality of their vision and therefore it also increases their ability to hunt.

Bill tells us a story.

We yak for a good hour, poking fun at each other and retelling stories of yesteryear. We love Iris’ stories as she is 95 years young and has a better memory than most of us at the table. She tells of riding dinosaurs and riding on the back of terra-dack-tiles. OK, maybe that is stretching it a little.

Mary, Paul, and Iris.

Mary sits at the head of the table because her hats add a particular class to the table, and any added class is helpful with this group.

Just us!

Sydney joined us today, and Bob loves to tease her! Can you tell? We are missing Bob (in the desert celebrating his 43rd wedding anniversary with Donna), and the Ash’s were AWOL.

Bob and Sydney, a pair to draw too!  Bob’s shirt says… “If a man speaks in a forest where no women are around, is he still wrong??“

We departed about 1:30 PM to let Scout outside and take our Thursday after-GNO nap, now a regular activity. We both read the funny book and finally got up about 4:30 PM and attacked the kitchen.

We pulled the big TV into the kitchen and watched two TCM classic movies. First was “Meet John Doe.” Meet John Doe is a 1941 American comedy-drama film directed and produced by Frank Capra, written by Robert Riskin, and starring Gary Cooper and Barbara Stanwyck. The film is about a “grassroots” political campaign created unwittingly by a newspaper columnist with the involvement of a hired homeless man and pursued by the paper’s wealthy owner. It became a box-office hit and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Story.

While the movie was playing we were slicing and dicing and preparing the ingredients for tonight’s dinner.  We work together well as a team while enjoying the crazy comedies of the 1930s thru 1950s.

We pulled out the Instapot-Ultimate tonight.

Then we watched another movie entitled, “My Favorite Brunette.” My Favorite Brunette is a 1947 American romantic comedy film and film noir parody, directed by Elliott Nugent and starring Bob Hope and Dorothy Lamour. The film is about a baby photographer on death row in San Quentin State Prison who tells reporters his history. While taking care of his private-eye neighbor’s office, he is asked by an irresistible baroness to find a missing baron, which initiates a series of confusing but sinister events in a gloomy mansion and a private sanatorium.

Remember when movies were black and white?

We enjoy watching these old movies together and looking for future stars buried in the cast of characters.

We watch TCM while we cook!

The meat has been pressure cooked for six minutes, now comes the veggies for another four minutes.

The next step, throw in the veggies and cook for four minutes!

While things are cooking, we call folks. Tonight we talked to Zack, and he was playing Mr. Mom. Becca stays away from Zack and the kids because the three tested positive for COVID. They are doing well, and he said it is like a cold.

Zack was playing mommy tonight.

Food is ready, we opened the pressure cooking and had dinner at the dining room table while Bob Hope entertained us with his tomfoolery!

De-lilly-ish-is!

After dinner, we cleaned up and headed for bed, where we read until about 11:00 PM, each of us chuckling at the hilarious writings of the Scottoline’s.

Hump Day!

Fun Fact: The small intestine is bigger than the large intestine. The human body is pretty weird. The small intestine measures 20 ft long and 1″ in diameter. Meanwhile, the large intestine is 5 ft long and 3″ in diameter. Essentially, the small intestine is larger than the large intestine.

We woke to the sound of the neighborhood rooster; his name is windy! OK, it is not a rooster, but the sounds of the Santa Ana winds blowing through the local canyons.

We stayed inside and awaited our glass company to take one of the mirrored doors back. They were too wide, and I could not get to my shirts! We have to depart by 11:00 AM as we are meeting Robin and Vicky for lunch at Yucatan Grill.

We are having four days of the high 80s!

We slipped away at 11:05 AM, and GPS stated it would take 21 minutes. That makes it easy to have lunch in the old hood. I love the El Diablo shrimp; burn baby burn. We got there early and visited with the waiter for a while.

We got there early!

The girls arrived at noon, and they conversed about Robin’s run-in with COVID while vacationing in Hawaii.

Yes, we do have SERIOUS conversations.

Soon the conversation turned to funny things; our table was a pile of giggles! Vicky spoke Spanish to our waiter, and he kept looking at me with a big smile on his face. I wonder what she said; at least he did not escort me out or put me at another table.

I mentioned to Vicky, “All Mexican chefs live their lives only by seasoning the moment.” I could NOT resist and told the girls, “Beautiful ladies who love eating Mexican food are known as Taco Belles.”

We love visiting with our daughter and Vicky, Paul’s neighbor of 30 years. They are amazing besides being a load of fun.

All smiles!

We got a shot of ourselves, thanks to Vicky! Usually, we miss getting pictures of us out and about.

We hugged a lot; we were not in a hurry.

After the girls departed, one going to work and one picking up the grandsons, we continued our chowing down.   We had an appointment at 2:30 PM for physical therapy, and we did not have sufficient to drive all the way home.

Mary had the halibut special. I warned her, “You should go easy on burritos that are badly constructed because they get a bad wrap.”

So cute!

We laughed a lot, and I caught Mary with the video camera; too funny. She was worried about her hair, and I thought to myself, “Her hair was windblown, and I am lucky my hair didn’t blow away!”

We departed and went to physical therapy, and I needed it as my leg was giving me fits today. After the workout, it was doing pretty well.

We had errands to run, so we stopped at Ralph’s on the way back as well as the UPS store to return my Bose headphones. We also popped by the bank to get some money.

Returning home, we had a small diner of beef stroganoff from yesterday. We pulled out the readers and read for a few hours. We are reading a book by Lisa Scottoline, and it was so funny I nearly wet myself.

We crashed about 9:00 PM, and I woke up around 3:00 AM and started reading again. I had to cover my mouth to keep from waking Mary up, and I was in the family room.

A fabulous read!

Did You Know? Born in the Lower Moyamensing neighborhood of Philadelphia, Scottoline attended Lower Merion High School and then went on to earn a B.A. in English magna cum laude (in three years) from the University of Pennsylvania, then graduated cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania Law School. She clerked for judges at the state and federal appellate courts and later became a litigator at Dechert in Philadelphia. After the birth of her daughter, she left the law firm and started writing. Final Appeal received an Edgar Award for excellence in crime fiction. She has since written 30 bestselling novels, including Look Again and Don’t Go, both of which reached number two on The New York Times Best Seller list. She has served as President of the Mystery Writers of America and won many other honors. Her novels have been translated into 30 languages, and she has 30 million copies in print.

I plan to call Colleen tomorrow morning and have he read this book; it is just too funny to pass up!

Yes, Paul is THAT old!

We Are Making Progress

FUN FACT: There’s an American town with a population of one. – Monowi, Nebraska, is the only town in the United States with an official population of one person.  Yes, she owes taxes; To herself!  She’s in her 80s and employed as the village’s mayor, librarian, and bartender.

I would love a small-town existence but this may be a little too small!

Another day and we didn’t leave the house.   Our handyman came over at 10:00 AM, and he and I put an eclectic collection of dinnerware into the attic above the garage.  We had four complete sets of beautiful dishes, complete with mugs, cups, bowls, etc.   We had them stored in prime real estate in the garage; now, they are carefully labeled and reside out of sight.

Tom then installed about 200 square feet of radiant barrier in our upstairs storage areas.  I was surprised by how well the barriers worked when I went into the attic to put the dishes away.  The outside temperature was in the 80s, and the attic was pleasantly cool.

When the sun heats a roof, it’s primarily the sun’s radiant energy that makes the roof hot.  Much of this heat travels by conduction through the roofing materials to the attic side of the roof.  The hot roof material then radiates its gained heat energy onto the cooler attic surfaces, including the air ducts and the attic floor.  A radiant barrier reduces the radiant heat transfer from the underside of the roof to the other surfaces in the attic.

When you add a radiant barrier to your roof assembly, it becomes your first line of defense against heat being transferred into your attic and then into the cooled spaces of your home.  Virtually ALL of the heat entering from a roof into an attic is radiant heat.  Over 90% of heat from a roof is transferred by radiant heat into the attic.  The fiberglass insulation in your attic is merely preventing the heat which has entered your attic in the form of radiant heat from being transferred into the conditioned (cooled or heated) part of your home.

It makes a significant difference!

Mary fixed breakfast around 11:00 AM, our first time to sit down all morning.

We were back to the grind at noon with Mary working on closets and I going to tools and workbench items.  The garage looks pretty good right now, and I can find my tools.  At 3:00 PM, Mary decided we needed beef stroganoff this evening.

We found and defrosted a mess of steak, and I did the slicing and browning, which took longer than I thought.  Stroganoff sauce is a sour cream gravy made with beef broth thickened with flour, and it’s flavored with mushrooms in it.  I love the pale brown creamy color against the deep golden brown seared beef!

2 1/2 pounds is quite a bit; it took three passes through the parge pan to get it all browned.

Mary added onions and garlic and cooked them until the onions were translucent.

The fixins’

The magic sour cream sauce is coming, but a double-check of the recipe was needed.  The recipe said, “chill in the fridge for twenty minutes.”  There’s no way Mary fits in our fridge.

Back to double-check!

We sliced up the two zucchini into long pieces and soaked them in mayonnaise before adding a layer of bread crumbs, garlic salt, and parmesan cheese to them.  Three hundred seventy-five in the over, and we had instant “salad.”

The recipe said, “for a bigger portion, just double everything.”  We could not do that; our oven doesn’t go up to 600 degrees.   I double as the Sous-Chef, Prep-Chef, and Clean-Up Boy when we cook.   We made a good team, and Mary is an excellent addition to the three of us.

We gossiped with Colleen for almost 40 minutes as we made dinner.  Our Alea follows us around the room as we move.

Modifications in progress.

In went the secret sauce, and now we wait twenty minutes while the concoction simmers.  Time for a glass of wine and to set the table.

I mentioned to Mary that we ought to try haggis someday.  I’m not sure what it entrails.

The final touch; secret sauce!

Again, when the table was set, and the wonderful meal was ready, I was so delighted to dine that I snapped one photo and dug into a supercalifragilisticexpialidocious meal!

Wonderful!  Melt in your mouth fantastic.

I was terrible this evening; after this incredible meal, I fell asleep in my chair, and forty minutes later, I woke up to a dimmed room with the kitchen spotless and a beautiful lady reading her kindle.  I got to be the luckiest man alive.

We went to bed about 8:00 PM and read our kindles.  While working in t e office today, Mary found two more kindles/tables that I had forgotten about!

Get Ready Week, Here We Come!

Fact: “Stewardesses” is the longest word typed with only the left hand.

I there! This is Scout, The Wonder Dog, and I am taking over for Daddy today.

So here I am, lounging in my little bed by the foot of Mommy and Daddy’s bed. I opened one eye and saw they were both asleep, so I plotted the best way to get their attention. I knew my beak was wet and cold, the perfect wake-up device. I got up quietly and pranced over to Daddy’s side of the bed. I studied his exposed body and decided my cold, moist sniffer needed to be planted on Daddy’s forehead.

I took careful aim, and I pounced, plopping my rather large proboscis smack dab in the center of his temple. Daddy recoiled with a shriek and mumbled something about getting kissed by an inebriated octopus; I did not take offense; he was sound asleep!

Once Daddy’s eyes opened, and he saw my rather adorable smile, our eyes became locked, and we starred at each other from a distance of roughly two inches. I knew he knew that I knew what I just did; it was my version of an alarm clock.

“Hey Daddy, it’s just little ól me!”

As Daddy tossed my rather prodigious body out the back door, I watched him head to the machine that transforms little plastic pouches into a hot black liquid; I think he calls it a Keurig. OK, my morning job is done; Daddy is up, the coffee is being made, and I can make tinkle in the south-40.

My Daddy is really nice, he left the door cracked, so I could come back inside as the temperature was in the high 40s. It was not quite glacial, but my nose was turning white; perhaps time to wake up Mommy? No, that would not bode well for my long-term health!

Dad says silly things all the time to me, especially when he talks “baby-talk.”   I give him a look that says, ‘Wow, you’re right! I never would’ve thought of that!'” It works every time!

Scout is classy!

We went on a walk today, and Daddy is teaching me to heal; my neck is hurting, but I think I am getting the hang of it ( no pun intended).

When we got back, we stopped in the front yard and admired the bulbs which are just coming up. We planted these on November 15th, so it has taken 90 days to come up!

We love to see our flowers grow!

The daffodil symbolizes rebirth and new beginnings. Though daffodils do grow in shades of white and orange, they are best known for brightening up the garden with their cheery yellow hues. The Latin name for daffodil is Narcissus, and it is believed to be named after the son of the river god from Greek mythology.

After I walked my humans, Mom went to the kitchen, and Dad was in the garage. Mom made something that Dad calls “Gruel”; it kinda looks like my food, only lighter in color. Mommy made muffins yesterday, so they had two muffins; they do not feed me those because they are not suitable for doggies? I gave them my very saddest look, and I got a bite from the bottom of one muffin.

We have brunch on the patio!

My exceptional hearing recognized an “Amazon Alexa Alert,” I call it a Tripple-A. I barked, and Dad went to get the phone. Dad read it to me; I have yet to master reading! Dad said something to Mom about getting his Speedo because of the high heat. Mom became visibly upset and responded, “Not when Scout is around; you might scare him.” I was puzzled. What is a Speedo?

More wind!

Mom and Dad called my sister Colleen and Mark because it was their anniversary. I love Colleen, she always talks to me, and I try to look nonchalant; we play a game!

It was Colleen and Mark’s twentieth anniversary.

Dad looked at the weather station and snapped a picture of it to send to my sister. He said something about, Wow! Eighty-seven degrees and I did hear Colleen say something about eleven degrees. Humans are very complicated!

Colleen had to see this one!

My sister is very thoughtful and sent this gift to Mom and Dad. They were not sure what it was until Dad said, “It looks like a turd.” I didn’t recognize it, and I am a professional turd-ologist, having made certain deposits many times in the south forty!

Mom studied the gift, and because Mommy is so bright, she pronounced, “The white item is a roll of toilet paper!”. They both laughed at Colleen’s gift, and I remained stoic and aloof!

A gift from New Hampshire!

Mom and Dad worked in the garage most of the day with Mommy cleaning out and organizing the freezers (we have three) and Dad attempting to find the top of his workbench! When that happens, my brother, Joe, is coming over!

At 5:30 PM, they announced they were done working; it was time to rest. Mom and Dad have these little flat things they call e-books, and for the next two hours, they sat at the table and read, often laughing uncontrollably.

Dad snapped a picture of me with my toys!

I am a handsome devil!

I have a great game I play! I move to different spots in my house and go to sleep, which makes Mom and dad have to get up and look for me. I have to make them exercise. Dad thinks pulling the lever on the reclining chair is exercise, and mom thinks pushing the buttons on her Kindle is exercise!

Dinner was simple; they were chips and dip and had a glass of wine. I went outside and got ready for bed, and they followed suit (except for the part about going outside; they are potty trained), and we all crashed about 9:00 PM. It was a dog-gone good day!

I asked Dad what I should use for the closing picture; I think this will be OK!

Today Is Fun Day!

Fact: Oranges aren’t naturally occurring fruits  – Oranges may be an iconic fruit, but they are not naturally occurring, as The Telegraph points out. Oranges are a hybrid of tangerines and pomelos, also known as “Chinese grapefruit,” They were originally green—not, well, orange. Oranges are a subtropical fruit, but now that they exist in more temperate climates, they lose their chlorophyll-induced green and become their more familiar color when the weather warms up.

We up at the crack of dawn, not because we wanted to be, but because Scout, The Wonder Dog, came to the side of the bed and gave us his paw. That means, “Take me out, Daddy.” Off we went, and I booted him out the door.

It was time for coffee, so I went to the coffee machine. A coffee a day keeps the grumpy away. Sometimes I go hours without drinking coffee, and it’s called sleeping.

As Scout would say, “Bark bark!”

We worked in the office until it was time to clean up and receive Becky and Dan. We plan to take them on a tour of the old homestead and then go to Orange Hills for lunch at 1:00 PM.

Scout knew them and didn’t bark when they came to the door!

We gave Becky and Dan the home tour today,

Just for Colleen, I snapped a picture of our weather station. It was indeed 80+ degrees outside, quite pleasant.   When we discussed the New Hampshire weather, I asked, “What does a cloud wear under his raincoat?”  Becky and Dan were not ready for my warped sense of humor, and I responded with, ” Thunderwear!”

The weather was perfect!

We drove separately to the restaurant, which is two miles away. Orange Hill is a hilltop hideaway uniquely situated on the hills of Orange County; Orange Hill offers sweeping views of Catalina Island, Downtown Los Angeles, Disneyland’s magical firework show, and our beautiful California coastline. We arrived to see cascading waterfalls, koi ponds, and a stunning fireplace.

We got seated but then had to move as a loud party was going on at the next table over. After the move, things settled down.

The wine was the first order of business! I told Dan, “A friend said a wine he tried recently was bitter and not properly fermented.”  I replied to my friend, “Sounds like sour grapes to me.”

We dined at Orange Hills.

We laughed and told stories the entire time. Dan and I both get the giggles.

We laughed and giggled for two hours.

The kids were also enjoying themselves, and we plan to do this again soon. I mentioned my collection of non-alcoholic wine and that I was donating it to the Elks. Someone told me that non-alcoholic wine was delicious, and I said they had no proof.

Cute couple.

We guys were lucky to sit next to two beautiful ladies. Dang! Good food, good wine, and lovely ladies.

Mom and daughter!

We headed home about 3:00 PM, and at 4:00 PM, we were off again driving to Costa Mesa to do a fly-by for Bill. We then headed to Chino to dance and had “dinner” at the Chinese restaurant, P.F. Changs.

I ordered BBQ beef, but the waiter said they do NOT have BBQ. When I asked why he said, “Why can’t Chinese barbecue? “Because the rice falls through the grill.”  I had wontons, and Mary did string beans.

I proceeded to eat the wontons. I was chopping them up when suddenly it hit me… I was engaging in acts of wonton destruction.

We danced until about 9:00 PM and then returned home to crash and read.

Work Work Work!

Fun Fact: If you work 40 hours a week up until 65 years, you will work just over 90,000 hours in your lifetime. Leonardo Da Vinci is credited with writing the first resume. The industrial revolution allowed people to work longer and year-round, and work was no longer dictated by seasons and natural lighting!

I was up at 6:00 AM, kicked out of bed, and sent to Home Depot to get flowers to plant. I went, all by myself, into the dark, dank morning where the temperature was in the 40s. I picked up a mess of flowers to plant and brought them home. I remember once; I was out camping when a monk tried to sell me flowers, but I said no. “I like to do my bit to prevent florist friars.”

We started planting at about 8:30 AM and finished at 1:30 PM!  The first thing that came to my mind was: What do you get if you cross a sheep dog with a daisy? A Collie-flower.

We planted almost 50 separate plants!

The planters will be packed in a few weeks! We counted over 40 bulbs that are sneaking through the mulch, and they will grow to be almost a foot tall!  I mentioned to Mary that  it’s good to talk to your plants. I tried to teach my flowers mathematics but they ended up with square roots.

We have 58 bulbs coming up also.

As the morning progressed, so did the wind! We had a full-scale gale going at 11;00 AM. I did a few odd jobs while Mary planted. I drilled holes in the ground using the super-auger, and then I would add a hose-caddy to the garage wall so the hose would have a home.

A well-earned award!

While Mary continued to work, I met with our stonemason, and we plotted out the backyard garden.   We will have an estimate in about two weeks, and he could start mid-March. It will look something like the one I had in Los Alamitos.

Early in the growing season.

I got a good picture of our Valentine’s Day flag as the hurricane winds made the flags stand right out.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

We were done by 1:30 PM and went inside to have lunch. The day was so great that we dined on the patio having a pot roast and a small glass of wine, and dessert was also served.

Our glass people came in about 2:00 PM and installed two of the four doors. Apparently, the manufacturer sent doors with incorrect measurements, so the Exercise Room and Robin’s Nest will not be finished today.

Before!

Then the doors come off, and we see the naked closet!

Oops, my small collection of Hawaiian shirts were exposed!

With the doors on the room looks large!

Mucho better!

They did not finish until almost 6:00 PM, and by the time they were done, it was Swim Spa time. I donned a tight latex glove on my left hand to keep the water from getting on the scar, and we sat in the spa for forty minutes, loosening up from the day in the garden.

We made a few phone calls and then hit the sack. We read for quite a while and then dozed off, awaiting tomorrow to arrive.

Zoooooom!

Fact: There is a word for someone giving an opinion on something they know nothing about. An ‘ultracrepidarian’ is someone who voices thoughts beyond their expertise.

We had a 9:30 AM appointment with our new hairdresser as the one Mary has had for years up and moved to Tennessee. We know this lady as she does Colleen’s hair, and she is a talker!!

We were a bit early when we pulled up, so we stopped at a coffee shop and got a hot drink to go. We noticed a Greek restaurant a couple of doors down, and it was the one CiCi from Rockwell’s recommended.

I got my ears lowered, and then I departed when Mary got into the seat. When Mary called to be picked up, we suggested to each other, at the same time, that we dine at the Greek place. I do not remember my Greek mythology very well, and I guess you can say my misunderstanding of Greek mythology has always been my Achilles Elbow.

We did, and it was good. Not fancy, but the food was quite acceptable. I told Mary, “What Athens in Greece, stays in Greece.”

Christakis Greek Cuisine

Here comes the Saganaki; melted cheese.

We were dining in Greece with an order of Saganaki!

The Saganaki was excellent, albeit different than George’s in Long Beach.

Happy girl!

We prepared a pot roast and put it in the hot pot to cook for several hours upon returning home. “Pot roast,” as a term for browned meat cooked with vegetables in a covered pot, began appearing in cookbooks in the late 19th century, but this method of slow cooking in liquid, known as braising, is centuries older.

We then dropped by Jan’s and brought some goodies; it was our “Meals On Wheels” run. She got borscht this evening which we made yesterday. We spent about an hour killing off a bottle of wine and telling tales to each other. Great fun. I captured a story that Mary was telling. I must begin to capture the entire story and catalog them for the kids and grandkids.

Home again by 8:00 PM, we checked the hot pot, and it was almost done; time to add the English shelling pears at got at TJ’s the other day.

Just about ready!

They were beautiful in addition to tasting good. The colors in the stew make things interesting. Peas are a good source of vitamins C and E, zinc, and other antioxidants that strengthen your immune system. Other nutrients, such as vitamins A and B and coumestrol, help reduce inflammation and lower your risk of chronic conditions, including diabetes, heart disease, and arthritis.

Love those shelling peas.

I did have one request, however!

I am going to hide the blender.

After dinner, it was dessert time, so Mary drug out the little chocolates. We had two each before returning them to a safe place, away from us!

Dessert was served

It was 9:00 PM and time to crash. I did my nightly walk-through, and all was well. The red lights are for celebrating Valentin’s Day, and in two more weeks, they will turn green for St, Patrick’s Day.

We are lit up for Valentine’s Day.

Scout, The wonder Dog, went outside for his last tinkle of the day and, of course, patrolled the periphery of the yard seeking out any stray elephants that nay be hiding in the bushes.

Good Night yard!

We crashed and read our book; we are now reading the same book, which will be fun to compare when we are done.

Thursday; The Week Is Getting Weaker!

Fact: Roller coasters were invented to distract Americans from sin! – In the 1880s, hosiery businessman LaMarcus Thompson hated that Americans were tempted by hedonistic places like saloons and brothels. So he set out to straighten up one of the most immoral places he could think of: Coney Island in New York. There, he built America’s first roller coaster to give New Yorkers some good, clean fun—away from seedier pastimes.

We are busy today and Scout informed us that he has an appointment at the groomer!

We are making plans to go north for a wedding.  This will be our first road trip while married and it ought to be fun.

Neice Lisa and Patrick are tieing the knot!

We had our coffee, went through the mail, and then went to the office to go through the e-mail and pay bills, ugh!  We got a text from the glass company and they are coming Saturday to put in the closet mirrored doors.  I have a plan to cut the doors in half vertically and use them in the attic to walk on since the attic is so large. More storage and less pain on the feet!

We will have ten large sliding doors and that will easily make twenty 80″-long planks!

We departed the house at about 11:00 AM as Scout, The Wonder Dog, had a groomer appointment.  We will get him on our return home and he will be magnificent looking (and he will know ow it!)  We asked Scout how he wanted his hair done and he best described it like:

We are bad parents; we said “No Way!!!”

It’s Thursday and that means Girl Night Out at the Elks.  We made it to Santa Ana by 11:30 AM.  Some people call it Thursday, I like to call it Friday Eve.  We had a large group today so the level of fun was increased.

Mike was in rare form today!

Leon and Marsha joined us today as we have been talking up “Girls Night Out”.  Linda wore her hat as did Mary but alas, I failed to capture Mary in her hat.

The Branders joined us today.

Returning home, Scout was not ready yet.  That was worrisome so we decided to stop at Aces and enjoy a glass of wine and dance a few dances.  We have control of their Internet Jukebox.  The company is called TouchTunes.  They install their digital jukebox free of charge and they shared the revenues with the restaurant/bar.

MAry has an App on her phone where we can select the music we want.  The patrons love our music and we get to dance!  We did a swing, a chacha, and a waltz today!

Good selection of real music!

Scout was ready when we went back by the groomer.  Home was only two miles away. We had to be home at 3:00 PM because Juan was coming by to wah the fleet.  I also had a few moving chores for him.

While the fleet was being washed and I was moving things around on the garage, Mary fired by the kitchen and made Borscht.  Borscht is a sour soup common in Eastern Europe and Northern Asia. In English, the word “borscht” is most often associated with the soup’s variant of Ukrainian origin, made with red beetroots as one of the main ingredients, which give the dish its distinctive red color.

Mary whipped up Borscht this evening

I was the official chopper and dicer!  Things are easier in the kitchen with two because Mary does not have to stop and chop.  She requests; I do; we eat!

I sliced and diced.

In a couple of months, we will be able to go out into the garden and pick our own!  The mason is coming over Saturday morning to make the estimate for the large garden.

All the cut-up goodies looked great in the soup.

With the precision of a surgeon (oops, she is a surgeon) the ingredients go into the pan and then into the pot and in an hour we will dine like royalty.  While cooking, I got ketchup in my eye, but I didn’t wash it because Heinzsight is 20/20!

I did mention to Mary that if Cinderella was given the task of cooking and not cleaning, then she would have been named Mozzarella!

Into the pan it goes!

The results were magnificent.  The soup has zero calories but it has 1,000,000,000 flavors.

Life is good!

MAry planned dessert; she found a large box of itty-bitty chocolate bottle containing booze!  Two of those and I was ready to crash!

We had a small dessert this evening.

We talked to Colleen and Robin while having dinner getting our daily gossip quotas.

We did our nightly coordination with Robin.

We crashed and didn’t even turn on the TV, our readers were busy.  TOmorrow is an early day as we have appointments to get pretty like Scout at 9:00 AM.

Twoday was 2/2/22!

Fact: The blob of toothpaste that sits on your toothbrush has a name. – It is called a ” .” Colgate-Palmolive Co and GlaxoSmithKline, two of the world’s biggest toothpaste makers, said they had reached a confidential settlement of litigation over who has the right to depict a “nurdle,” a wave-shaped toothpaste blob that sits atop a toothbrush head.  A settlement notice was filed on Monday with the U.S. District Court in Manhattan, where the companies had sued each other in July 2010.

Now you k ow; go out and impress someone!

We got an alert about HIGH WINDS for today and tomorrow; so far, they were right!  The chimes have been making noise for hours now.  Every time I hear the wind, I think of Bob Dole, who said, “The wind doesn’t bother me.  I’m in the U.S. Senate.”

According to them, the cleaning folks were here after a two-week hiatus because they had the COVID-19 junk; it was just the flu.  We had them do the office first so we could hide out there while they did the rest of the house.  We got some work done, including ordering a mess of photos at the local CVS to populate several available picture frames.

Mary fixed brunch after they departed, and she decided to watch an old movie.  I rolled out the T.V. into the kitchen and turned on TCM, selecting a Cary Grany movie from the late 1940s.  The plot in a nutshell: A willful woman concocts an elaborate scheme to trap a handsome pediatrician into marriage.

I mentioned to Mary, “Before I tell you something important, I take your hands in mine.  That way, you can’t hit me with them.”

Loads of laughs!

Brunch is underway.  I was going to take a picture of the final product, but it was so good I ate it before the camera came out of my pocket.  I know eggs were involved, and Mary can be a real practical yolk-er at times.

Time for breakfast!

The T.V. is just the right size for cooking and dining on the island.  When we are done, it goes back to its room!  Move over, Vanna White; you have done been replaced!

We watched “Every Man Ought To B.E. MArried” with Cary Grant, circa 1949

The old movies are fantastic.  A group of violinists plays “Beyond The Sea” as they move about the dining room.  The song was first recorded in France in 1946 and was called “La Mer”; The Sea.  The violins sounded terrific.

The movie was funny!

While watching the old movie, I remembered an old advertisement from the 1950s.  Do you remember this one?  The caption was just too funny.  Email me if you know the caption!

Do you remember the caption?

The baby goes in and out while we are cooking and eating; he can’t seem to make up his mind.  I thought I heard him say, “Daddy, I’m so hungry I could eat a horse and chase the rider.”

Something smells good, Daddy, whatcha making?

We got cleaned up and made ready to go about 1:00 PM for our P.T. session.  It really helped my leg, and I now know the exercises I need to do every morning to keep the nerve in shape.

We returned home for a fly-by to water the baby before we departed again.  We took him out in the backyard to make sure he watered the grass.

On the road again, this time VFR to the Santa Ana Elks Lodge #794.  Nick is getting his investigation this evening, and we wanted to be there.  He will get initiated next month when Aunt Colleen is out here getting initiated.

Paul and Grandson Nick; Nick just finished the “Investigation.”

Tonight they had beef ribs, and they were terrific.  We got three bones each, and I took two of mine home.  Mary also decided to take two home, so we have lunch ready to go for the next couple of days, apply the microwave, and dine in style.

Those bones were terrific.  I only ate one and was full to the brim!

Bill is the Treasurer of the lodge, and we get all the “skinny” on what’s happening from him.

Dr. Capps fills us in on things!

Nick and Mom, the powerful duo!  Watching the child go from a baby to a grown man; makes me feel “old.”  Now he and his father will be Elks.

Nick and her very proud Mom!

The ladies chattered the entire time, which made me very happy.  Mary and Robin are good friends, and that is a remarkable thing.  A few weeks ago, Mary and Robin played “Hide And Seek” for hours!  Well, good friends are hard to find.

Watch out for these two.

It’s an inside joke!

We enjoy family and being with each other.  Can you tell?  You and I make an incredible “WE.”

Love is in the air.

We departed in time to go by Bob and Donna’s and join the Starlighters Board Meeting.  It was a good session, although the couch was so comfortable I fell asleep; probably better for the meeting!  Meetings are held to discuss many problems which would never arise if we had fewer meetings.

We headed home around 9:00 PM and read for a while.  We both have good books going, which are hard to put down.

Off And Running

Fact: People are more creative in the shower. When we take a warm shower, we experience an increased dopamine flow that makes us more creative.

We heard the roosters about 6:30 AM, so we got up and sent Scout The Wonder Dog to chase the chickens away. We had to go to Long Beach for minor surgery, so we departed at 11:00 AM and stopped by Old Ranch for a bite to eat.

The lunch was delicious, and we had a glass of wine; that was a potential pain reliever.  The menu was interesting.  I told Mary that I once had a pelican curry. It tasted OK, but the bill was enormous.

The doctor took just a few minutes to remove the offending skin, and then we waited almost forty minutes for the Mohs procedure to be finished. The doc got everything on the first try, yeah.  Squamous cell carcinoma is something you want to take care of immediately before it spreads.

I watched him sew the hand up, and it was interesting; I could not feel a thing.

I gots an oweey!

We headed directly home via CVS and Ralph’s market. At Ralph’s, we got five mounts of beef for our need stew will make in the next couple of days. We also got Reese’s Peanutbutter Cups for Ms. Mongel; she has a sweet tooth.

Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups are an American candy consisting of a chocolate cup filled with peanut butter, marketed by The Hershey Company. They were created on November 15, 1928, by H. B. Reese, a former dairy farmer and shipping foreman for Milton S. Hershey. Reese left his job with Hershey to start his own candy business. Reese’s generates more than $2 billion in annual sales for The Hershey Company, and Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups are number one on the list of top-selling candy brands.

Does she look happy or what??

“Reese’s, for me???”

We got home, and Scout, The Wonder Dog, was awaiting us with a complete report on chickens and elephants he had chased away.

“Quiet, I am on duty!”

Mary was not feeling totally up to snuff, so we had a bowl of soup and some fruit. We read from our readers, and then Mary crashed. I cleaned up the kitchen and then off to the office to continue working on the website.

I found a great picture directly from the 1950s!

We enjoyed the 57 Ford.

The First Month Of 2022 Is Now In The Can!

Fun Fact: Violet Jessop survived three of the largest ship disasters in history. Violet Jessop may be one of the luckiest or unluckiest women in history, depending on how you look at it. The ocean liner stewardess not only survived the sinking of the Titanic in 1912, but she was also present during the Olympic ship collision in 1911 and onboard during the sinking of the Britannic in 1916 (Olympic and Britannic were Titanic’s sister ships). Miraculously, none of the disasters could take Jessop down, and she lived to be 83, passing away in 1971.

Dang! I checked, and I took no pictures today! It was because we were busy as can be! We were up just after 7:00 AM and hit the office running. Mary worked on her complicated puzzle, and I worked on the 50s website.

We had a small lunch and then got ready to go to PT. After PT, we ran the meals on wheels to Costa Mesa and then to Jan’s. We visited Jan for a while, and then the phone rang; Sydney said she was on her way.

Sydney joined us for dinner this evening, and she must be a good friend because I let her have some of Mary’s super-soup! We talked for a couple of hours and then hit the sack.

Roomba and I had a serious talk about the birs and the bees; no, it was about the rollers and the rugs.  I caught her again dining on the entrance way run.  The poor rug is no officially terrorized.

Sunday Has Arrived; We Are Ready!

Now Mary is a “Pink Lady”

At 4:00 PM we got cleaned up for our 5:00 PM departure to Chino and dancing. We met up with Bob and Donna at PF Chang’s and enjoyed a delightful hour of conversation before going to Studio-M!

We have arranged the trip to Catalina for the Avalon Ball.

Great fun with friends.

We enjoyed an excellent meal and I watched my calories, only 660 this evening. We looked at the menu and the Peking Duck was 3,000 calories, OMG!

Just us!

Off to Studio-M and two and a half hours of dancing. We had a large table with the Brander’s, Ash’s, Zaitz, and Capps.  We danced until 9:30 PM and then my feet gave out. We hit the road.

Fact: All of the water on Earth would form a ball that’s 860 miles wide. About 71 percent of the surface of the Earth is covered with water. However, it’s hard to fully grasp just how much water that actually is. Thankfully, NASA put it in perspective. They explain that if we were somehow able to take all of the water on the planet and bring it together, it would form a massive 860-mile wide ball. For comparison, the Earth itself is 7,917.5 miles in diameter.

We were lazy today which is understandable since we danced for hours last night! I did get up at 6:00 AM and watered Scout (i.e. took him outside to water the grass).

We again worked in the office and finally, I got all of my 150+ aloha shirts organized and cleaned off my desk! Success, finally! We watched our TV evangelist and he had good messages for us.

I got my OLD camera out and decided to see if it would work. It is a Canon 30D, about 15 years old. It takes pretty good pictures but no bells and whistles.  I am going to carry it with me for a while before giving it away.

It works just like it did when I first got it!

We had a small brunch and then headed for the garden to do some work. The yard is 120×40 and that does NOT count the pool. Mary trimmed the roses, picked onions for today’s soup, and straightened things up. I went to the He-Shed and found twelve hand shovels and sorted the contents of a box into my He-Shed toolbox.  The shed is looking pretty good and we can find things easily now.
I was NOT kidding!

We went from plant to plant checking on each one making sure they had water and were not infested with weeds. The new dripline controller is working just great,  I was able to turn on the sprinklers form my phone as I was standing by the plants.

We have loads of work to keep us busy!

We measured for the new garden and I plan to call our bricklayer this week and get an estimate for the damages.

After working in the garden, Mary decided it was time for soup! I found a recipe called “Stuffed Pepper Soup” so off we go slicing and dicing and cooking up a storm. It was actually fantastic!

Before we added the liquids!

We finished making the soup and could NOT wait to try it. Damn, it was terrific! I love the way Mary eyeballs the recipe and them modifies it to fit her taste=. The English shelling peas that I picked up at TJ’s were a wonderful addition.

The doorbell rang and I went to see what was going on. The nice UPS man delivered my surprise for Mary. She liked the “Pink Ladies” jackets that some of the gals were wearing so I did my thing!

Now Mary is a “Pink Lady”

Scout Is Our 6:00 AM Alarm Clock!

Fact: The Supreme Court has its own private basketball court with an amazing nickname. There’s a basketball court on the top floor of the U.S. Supreme Court Building. Its nickname? You guessed it: “the highest court in the land.”

Scout is too intelligent. At 6:00 AM, he wakes up, scratches, and comes to the side of the bed with that “urgent look: on his face. He has a friend down the street, and I think he is getting bad ideas from him!

We are beginning to worry!

So now that we are up, we had our coffee and hit the office to go through the “paper” that seems to increase every day. Mary said the paper must double in size overnight. I took care of the property taxes due in three days and filled a trash can with paper I did not need!

I showed Mary all the recipes I printed out over the last several days, and we will make several of them.

It finally got late, and we hit the showers, found our clothes from the 1950s, and went off to the Santa Ana Elks for the “Sock Hop.”

On our way to the Elks.

Fun, Fun, and Fun!

The old car club had several vehicles on display! The 51 Ford ragtop was in superb condition.

The old cars there out in force.

Mary and I spotted the 57 Ford ragtop and had to pose for a picture. This puppy sold for $2,400 in 1957, and it is worth upwards of $35,000 today!

We enjoyed the 57 Ford.

Cal Worthington has nothing on this little lady!  While looking, we also relearned some 1950s phrases!

Cat – A hip person (Beats)
Cherry – Originally, an unaltered car. Later, anything attractive (hot-rodders, originally)
Classy chassis – Great body
Cloud 9 – Really happy
Clyde – Term of address, usually for a normal person (Beats)
Cook, cookin’ – Doing it well
Cool – Indefinable quality that makes something or someone extraordinary
Cool it – Relax, settle down
Crazy  – Implies an especially good thing – “Like crazy, man”
Cream – Originally, to dent a car. Later, to badly damage (hot-rodders, originally)
Cruisin’ for a bruisin’ – Looking for trouble

I would have bought two cars from this pretty little lady!

Mary should have sold cars!

We may have to buy one of these for the other 1950s dances we will go to!

Get Bent! – Disparaging remark as in “drop dead”
Get with it – Understand
Gig – Work, job (beatnik)
Go ape – Get very excited
Goof – Someone who makes mistakes
Goose it – Accelerate the car fully (greaser)
Greaser – A guy with tons of grease in his hair, which later came to describe an entire group of people. Yes, John Travolta in Grease.
Grody – Sloppy, messy or dirty

Great looking pickup.

I picked up on the fins; beautiful fins. The photo below is a 1956 DeSoto. Check out my fins page on the 50s website.

This was the year when Fins were in and the higher the fin, the better!

Scream – Go fast
Screamer – A hot rod
Shot down – Failed
Sides – Vinyl records
Sing – To tattle or inform on someone (beatnik)
Sounds – Music
Souped up – A car modified to go fast
Spaz – Someone who is uncoordinated. A clutz.
Split – Leave
Square – A regular, normal person. A conformist.
Stacked – A woman with large er, ah…you know, well endowed.

Tonight it was cold, so I had my letterman jacket on! I matched the car.

I have not seen a DeSoto in years!

One more picture! We laughed all night long; great fun with friends.

In the 1950s, I could walk into the grocery with a dime and walk out with a loaf of bread, half a gallon of milk, a dozen eggs, and a pound of hamburger. Nowadays they’ve got these newfangled cameras everywhere.

Just little old us!

Back inside, Ronnie was DJ’ing up a storm. Ronnie played lots of rock and roll or swing music. We got him to play the Tenessee Waltz, circa 1950 by Patty Page. Mary got George up and dancing.

What do you call a radio that only plays music from the 1950s and 1960s? A boomerbox!

We had a great dinner of hamburgers and hotdogs.  We did not have the buns as we are attempting to lose weight.  It was definitely a 1950s meal.  I asked Mary, “How does a hamburger introduce his girlfriend?”  She was awaiting my typical smartass answer so I decided to surprise her by saying, ” Meat Patty”.

I could not resist so I also asked, “What does a redneck and a hamburger have in common?”  Without hesitation, Mary responded, “They’re both in bread.”

George and Mary hit the floor.

The twist was popular, and Beverly gives us a little demonstration of how it is done.

Git down, girl!

Did You Know? The twist is a dance that was inspired by rock and roll music. From 1959 to the early sixties, it became a worldwide dance craze, enjoying immense popularity while drawing controversies from critics who felt it was too provocative. It inspired dances such as the Jerk, the Pony, the Watusi, the Mashed Potato, the Monkey, and the Funky Chicken, but none were as popular.

Having seen teenagers in Tampa, Florida doing the dance, Hank Ballard wrote “The Twist,” which became the B-side of Hank Ballard and The Midnighters’ 1959 single “Teardrops on Your Letter.” Dick Clark, having noticed the dance becoming popular among teenagers, recommended to Cameo Records that the more wholesome Chubby Checker recorded the song, which was released in 1959 and became a number one hit in 1960. The dance became passé among teenagers as it became acceptable among adults, and the song was re-released, becoming a number one hit again in 1962.

I had difficulty seeing the dance steps, so Mary suggested I put on my new glasses. I wondered why everyone was staring at me.

I wore my new glasses.

After two glasses of wine and a coke, I headed to the gentleman lounge, and as I was performing one of my magic tricks, someone pounded on the door and yelled, “Paul, come out, you and Mary are in a contest.” Say what? Yes, Mary and I were selected as one of the four “best dressed” couples. We had to go on stage and show our “outfits.” We came in second, but that was OK; it was fun!

Love is in the air.

We had so much fun with our friends. The 1950s dance was terrific, and the burgers and hotdogs were as I remember.

We danced until we dropped!

We departed about 9:30 PM as we had to water Scout, but on the way home, our minds worked in unison, and we said to each other, “Let’s stop at Aces (Bar & Grille).” We did; we took over the jukebox and met another couple. Incredible as it may seem, he could dance, and she could not.

Angel took our photos, so we had evidence of our late-night escapade!

We are celebrating six months!

Aces close at 10:00 PM, so at 9:59 PM, we departed and headed home; home is about three miles away as the crow flies.

We danced for hours!

At home, we crashed. We both read a bit, and then the Sandman came to visit.

Did You Know? Since the Sandman didn’t sprinkle sleep sand on your eyes, how did that goop get there? It accumulates due to your eyelids and tears combining to become a carwash for your eyes.

When you close your eyes for a long night’s rest, they stay firmly closed. Your tears wash over your eyes as they move around during different sleep phases. The tears pick up dust, old eye cells, mucus, bacteria, and any other small foreign substances in your eye. The closed eyelids guide the goop that ends up in the corners of your eye near your nose and along your lash lines.

The same cleaning process happens throughout the day when you blink. However, during those hours, the goop doesn’t get a chance to accumulate, so you don’t notice any gunk.

Six Month Anniversary!

Fun Fact: The last letter added to the English alphabet was ‘J..’ The letter “j” dates back to 1524, and before that, the letter ‘i’ was used for both the ‘i’ and ‘j’ sounds.

We were lazy today and just worked in the office for quite a while.   Mary made my favorite breakfast, gruel. To be honest, she also made a delicious bagel to go along with the gruel and fresh fruit.

Did You Know? Gruel consists of some cereal—such as ground oats, wheat, rye, or rice—heated or boiled in water or milk. It is a thinner version of porridge that may be more often drunk than eaten and may not need to be cooked.

I got the results from the dermatologists’ visit, and of the three samples they took, one is severe and heeds to be removed surgically.

I will see a skin surgeon soon.

Around noon, we got cleaned up and went to Tustin to see an old clothing store and to Clario’s Italian Deli. We got some goodies for Jan and took them to her place around 1:00 PM. We had a glass of wine and then returned home to get ready for the trek to Los Alamitos and Seal Beach.

Tomorrow we will layout the area for our new garden which will look like the old one except a little bigger. We will have a dedicated berry area, and one of the beds will be sized for corn, meaning at leave six feet wide instead of four feet. I asked Mary if she knew what kind of socks a gardener wears?”  She waited patiently for the horrible answer, which was, ” Garden hose.”

We are anxious to get back to gardening!

We headed west with a stop by Mary’s old office to pick up a new pair of glasses for Paul. Then we went to Vicky’s house and dropped off the Starlighter’s greeters bag. After that, we went to PAtty’s, arriving about 6:00 PM. We were an hour early for dinner, so we sat at the bar and kibitzed with the locals until Bill and Mary arrived.

We are just having a load of fun!

At the end of dinner, I coaxed Bill into having dessert; it was the only way I could beat him in our weight contest. Mary and I drank our dessert!

The dinner was excellent and the company fantastic; we laughed and giggled for almost two hours.

Slurp, gurgle, belch! The desserts were mighty good!

We drove home happy and stuffed to the gills; my plan of eating only half of the meal and bringing the remainder home failed miserably. Upon arrival at Casa Valencia, I took Scout out to water the lawn, and Mary headed to her room to get ready for bed. We didn’t bother with TV and dove right into our readers.

Girls Night Out Was A Kick!

Fact: A one-way trip on the Trans-Siberian Railway involves crossing 3,901 bridges.  The Trans-Siberian Railway is the longest railroad in Russia, but it’s also the longest one in the world. The journey takes seven days, during which time passengers pass through eight different time zones and cross 3,901 bridges.

6:30 am, and I am peacefully asleep when Scout the Wonder Dog comes around to the side of the bed and puts his freezing nose on me.  I must have jumped three feet, not expecting a cold, wet kiss on the face. “Ok, Doggie,” I exclaimed, and I lumbered out of bed, put on a robe, and crept out of the bedroom with Scout directly behind me, just waiting to apply his frigid nose someplace on my body.

You must love him, even at 6:30 am.

I checked the temperature, and it was in the 60s, so I went back to bed, and he patrolled the yard for the next hour.  At 7:30 am, he got breakfast after I called him several times. Breakfast consisted of bone-flavored coffee and filet mignon; well, that’s what I told him it was!

I called him inside at 7:30 am, but he would not answer.

We worked around the house until it was time to go to the Elks for our regular “Girls Night Out.” We were going to go to Huntington Beach and pick up my new glasses, but alas, we walked Five Miles and just ran out of time.  We also wanted to get to the Elks early, as Robin was coming by to visit everyone after her bout with COVID.

We shared the three monkey pictures we took a couple of weeks ago with everyone the others wanted to get in on the fun.  Iris, Will, and Bob are naturals.

Oh, dear! Itis, Will, and Bob did a magnificent job!

I tried to do the same with my group at the end of the table, but it wasn’t as successful.  We were laughing too hard! I tried to make the picture by taking a selfie, but my arms were too short.  Besides, the best selfies are the ones that aren’t

We tried twice!  Mary, Robin, Paul, and Sydney gave it their best!

Since the selfie wouldn’t work, I turned the job over to Bob Z., and he showed that the girls didn’t want to see anything, since Paul was, well, let’s say… no, perhaps we ought not to say!

The second time was a charm.

Robin needed a breathing device, the one you use to build up your lung capacity. We had one from my last operation at home, so Robin came home with us.  We talked for a while, and Mary found the breathing machine. Robin had to leave to avoid the traffic, so she departed about 3:30 pm.

Mary and I decided to rest, so we got our reading devices; Mary has a giant Samsung with reader software, and I have a new Kindle Paperwhite.  We read the same books, believe it or not.  Clive Cussler is our favorite.

Did You Know? Cussler began writing novels in 1965 and published his first work featuring his continuous series hero, Dirk Pitt, in 1973.  His first non-fiction, The Sea Hunters, was released in 1996.  The Board of Governors of the Maritime College, State University of New York, considered The Sea Hunters in lieu of a Ph.D. thesis and awarded Cussler a Doctor of Letters degree in May, 1997.  It was the first time since the College’s founding in 1874 that such a degree was bestowed.

Clive Cussler died at his home in Scottsdale, Arizona, at the age of eighty-eight on February 24, 2020.

He wrote 177 books, and we will likely read them all eventually.  We read until about 8:00 pm, while having a light dinner and a glass of wine.

When we went to bed, we both preferred reading to watching TV, so Mary had the Samsung, and I had the Paperwhite, and we read until 11:00 pm when our eyes gave out.

It’s A Zoom Day

Fact: You can hear a blue whale’s heartbeat from more than 2 miles away. – The world’s largest animal’s heart weighs about 400 pounds — approximately the size of a small piano.

It was cold and froggy out this morning; I could not even see the top of the hill behind us!

We were up early as the cleaning folks will be arriving at 8:30 AM, and we need to be on the road by 8:45 AM. We went to Los Alamitos Medical Center and saw my dermatologist for a six-month checkup. It is about 20 miles from our house, but all my doctors are right there in the same building, too convenient to change! The fog was still heavy when we reached the top of the hill on Cannon Street.

We could hardly see and had our lights on and going slower than the speed limit!

The first doctor was my dermatologist. When I got there, I found out he was fired today. I’m told he made too many rash decisions. All looked well but he did take three biopsies and I will know in a few days about what the plan of action is going to be.

Now, we headed off to see the dentist to get a new crown for my back tooth. That was easy, about 20 minutes, and we were good. While I was there, I asked her “What does the dentist of the year get?” She wasn’t aware that they get “A little plaque!” It probably was not wise to tease her when she had a drill my mouth!

It’s now 11:30 AM, and the hunger pains began to occur. We decided that Aces Bar and Grille would be a good stop. We both had salads and, yes, one glass of wine. The salads were fantastic. We also played the jukebox via our phones, and we had REAL music going. We talked to the owner, and we are going to go over some Wednesday evening, and he will move the furniture so we can dance. Perhaps six couples. He is excited about that!

Great food and friendly people!

One more stop before going home; CVS had two meds for me and several pictures we will give to people tomorrow at Girls Night Out.

We made it home and watered the baby; we thought the cleaning folks would be there, but alas, she was still under the weather. We stayed home about fifteen minutes before hitting the road again.

Like being shot out of a cannon, we hurried toward Tustin, stopping the Walgreens for some meds for Mary. Finally, we arrived at PT, where our bodies were bent into figures unrecognizable by most people. After thirty minutes of being mistreated, we departed.

PT is underway!

Next stop; the cleaners, and then we headed home for the second time today. We again watered Scout The Wonder Dog, and he was happy. We agree with Will Rogers, “If there are no dogs in heaven, then when I die, I want to go where they went.”

We got our “meals on wheels” delivery ready and called Jan; she needs a good five-minute warning. We made one stop on the way, the post office, and we brought her several goodies, and we sat for an hour enjoying a glass of wine and walking about stuff.

Hey Jan, we’re back! Hide the silverware!

It’s a nice feeling to go to Jan’s because we can sit and talk, and time slips away. We laugh and giggle, and it is relaxing. I pulled up the photo we intend to give to the guys tomorrow, and everyone got a good laugh! I felt a little bad when the girls suggested I should have been in the picture with my hands in my lap!

See no evil; hear no evil; see no evil!

Now, it is time to head home after a lovely visit.

It’s a mile and a half to home; we can do this!

It was just getting dark when we arrived home, and Scout and I wandered around in the back forty of the house, and I snapped the last vestige of this beautiful and productive day. I couldn’t see the sunset because there was dusk in my eyes.

I was confused about dinner so I went to watch the sunset and think. It didn’t help though, it just left me in the dark.

The sun had set in the west!

I thought I had listed to Mary when she said what we should have for dinner but I think I missed, bu quite a bit.

Oops!

We had a small bite to eat and hit the sack around 8:30 PM after talking to Robin and Colleen on the bat phone. Mary watched two movies and I just plain went and crashed during the first one. I managed to stay awake for the second but at 11:00 PM it was lights out.

Another good day; Mary and I work together like a well-oiled machine, especially on errand day!

At Rest; Momentairly!

Fact: Spam is a mashup of the words “spice” and “ham.” – And not, as urban legend would say, Scientifically Processed Animal Matter.

We stayed around the house all day! We just worked on getting things into shape. We spent several hours in the He Shed and She Shed, our two 120-square foot storage sheds out on the south forty.

The morning sky was a beauty!

Mary was cooking again! This time it was potato soup, and it was terrific. I washed and chopped the potatoes and carrots while Mary did her magic. As we worked together, I mentioned that I saw an article in the local paper where a guy in our area was arrested last week for stealing cooking utensils. He was quoted as saying, “It was a whisk worth taking!”

Six hours later, it was “Soup Time.”

The soup smelled terrific as it approached completion. We departed the kitchen and headed to the back yard where we have two large sheds.   I found a 100-foot hose in my shed, which Mary gave me for my birthday. I was waiting until we knew what we would do with the backyard.

I installed the roll-up hose on a swivel so I could wash off the patio and then water the plants along the wall with ease.

I finally installed my birthday present; a 100-foot automatic house reel!

We marched hand-in-hand to the site of the He-She-Sheds.  We said a few prayers before opening the door.  It looked like a re-run of Fibber McGee’s Closet!

Long time radio show. You can hear it on OTR.COM

When comedy was really funny (and clean).

These are not exactly “closets” but they come close to what Fibber and Molly had going for twenty plus years.

So nice and neat from the outside

Into the He Shed I over with visions of a clean shed in an hour. Whilst clearing out the shed, I found a box full of dead batteries. I’m giving them away free of charge.

I tossed out almost two trash cans full of “stuff.” Now I can walk inside and turn around.

He Shed: Inside looking south.

It looks organized. While working, I asked Mary, “Where does Dracula keep his tools?” I finished by saying, “The bloodshed.” I need some long 2x4s to put things up above my head.

He Shed: Inside looking north.

Mary worked hard, and now she can almost get inside the She Shed. Scout watched the event unfold. We told him we made the Shed for him, but Scout won’t go inside. He says it doesn’t look stable. Mary did make a dent in her She-Shed, and we plan to continue the work perhaps on Friday; tomorrow is a lost cause.

She Shed: Still can’t get inside!

Mary did ask for a bit of redesign of her She Shed; I listened carefully to her desires and found a little picture on the web that matches what she wants.

Doors must be so no one can take a picture inside.

South of the She-Shed is our orchard; I loosely use the word “our.” I hope when the neighbors get home and see that one side of the tree is picked clean, they do NOT get suspicious!

I have picked so many that I’m scared I’m turning orange. Hopefully, it’s just a pigment of my imagination!

Our neighbors supply our citrus.

We planted about 100+ bulbs in the garden before Christmas, and they are beginning to come up; if all goes well, we ought to have a beautiful front yard. Mary asked me, “Why do flowers always drive so fast?” I knew she knew that I knew she knew the answer. Her response was, “They put the petal to the metal.” I provided a mini-giggle and shuffled off to visit our inside bulbs.

We won a set of bulbs at the Rondeliers dance. No, it was NOT for our dancing abilities. We sat closest to the exit, and that was the criteria. Nothing was showing when we got the plants, so I thought it was a joke. Three weeks later, they are getting pretty, and we enjoy them.

Our Rondaliers gift is doing super well.

The term “bulb” is used by most people to refer to plants with underground, fleshy storage structures. … The definition of a bulb is any plant that stores its complete life cycle in an underground storage structure. Bulbs or bulb-like plants are usually perennials. They have a period of growth and flowering.

It was getting to be 4:00 PM, and the temperature was dropping, so we came inside to work. Mary went through her closet and found several hats that we will mail to BJ; she is another hat lover. I worked in my closet rearranging my shirts and grouping certain clothes together.

We had dinner around 5:00 PM, and the soup was out of this world good! I am a lucky man to have discovered Mary to be a beautiful, intelligent, caring woman who loves me and loves to cook.   We dined and called Robin, who is flying back tonight from Hawaii. We talked to Colleen and then spent 45 minutes on the phone with David.

The last photo from Bob and Robin

After the phone calls, we decided to walk Five Miles. We gathered up our warm clothes, attached Scout The Wonder Dog to his lease, and off we went in a cloud of dust.  Returning home, Scout said, “Wake me up when it’s time for another walk.”

We headed for bed about 8:00 PM and watched an old 1953 movie entitled “Return To Paradise” with Gary Cooper. An American drifter comes to a remote Polynesian island controlled by a Puritanical missionary and turns the social life of the island upside-down.

We tried to watch another film by Gary Cooper, but we were getting sleepy. We decided to read for a while, and I used my new Kindle Whitepaper, and it is small but relatively easy to read.

Good movie and enjoyable to watch since it is 70 years old!

On The Go!

Fact: The actual name for a hashtag is an octothorpe. The ‘octo’ refers to the eight points in the symbol, but according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, the ‘thorpe’ part is a mystery.

Today we were so busy I forgot to take pictures and when I did it was hit or miss.

I do not say much about politics, but this one was dead on!

We worked in the office and then went to PT, and I got a double treatment as I somehow buggered up my right arm. On the way home, we stopped by CVS and then started working again. Mary found a recipe for “Simple Mexican Casserole”  I, of course, went into the kitchen to assist; it goes easier when two are working to make dinner.

I now know what Mary means when she says, “Chop Chop!” (These are from our garden)

Mary has mastered the stove; she can make that thing sing.

Hard at work!

I was delegated the “chip squisher”; a few minutes also, these were tortilla chips.

So, a guy walks into a Mexican restaurant and takes a seat. Before he gets to order a his food, the bowl of tortilla chips in front of him says, “Hey, you’re a handsome fellow.”

The man tries to ignore the chips and orders a soda. The chips say, “Ooooh, that drink is delicious. Great choice. You’re a brilliant man.”

Starting to freak out, the guy says to the waiter, “Hey, what the heck, this bowl of chips keeps saying nice things to me!” The waiter says, “Don’t worry about it; the tortilla chips are complimentary.”

I was the head chipper today!

I didn’t get a picture of the final product, but it was good! Next time, we are going to use Frito’s instead of chips.

Scout, The Wonder Dog, seems to escape the kitchen when we work; he is afraid he might be put to work!

“What, me work?”

I worked on “The Memory Book” on my website for a bit before crashing. We watched Roswell. It was a busy day!
