Friday And We Are All Over The Map!

Fact:  A cloud can weigh more than a million pounds.

Today started with a bang; the trap snapped, and I added one more to my score.  I think we ought to scalp them and hang the scalps on the wall as a deterrent.

Where do rats go to get drinks? A Squeak-easy!

Paul 6 – Rats 0

Carlos soon arrived to mow what remains of our beautiful yard.  We asked Carlos to trim the two trees in our backyard, and he started today and will finish on Saturday.  It is a big job.

I toured the yard to see what progress has been made, and we are looking good!  The stacks will soon be flat and cemented to the top of the retaining walls; the bullnose is smooth and ready for our butts s we can garden and weed in comfort!

I have always wondered: If a red house has red bricks, a yellow house has yellow bricks, what color bricks does a green house have?

Ready to be laid!

There are over 500 square feet of gardening area in these beds, and the space between them will be cemented next week!

Three more days, and the planters will be ready to receive dirt!

We will ask Carlos to trim our trees and put some trimmings into the bottom of the planter so we can save money on the amount of dirt we have to buy!

They are looking good!

We went for an MRI in Yorba Linda at UCI, which was so easy as it was twelve minutes away.  The machine was a Three-Tesla unit and gave an excellent resolution.

Here we go!

After the MRI, we went home and got ready to visit Los Alamitos and visit two doctors.  After picking up some reports from doctor number one, we went to Shenandoah for lunch.

You know the restaurant has a clown as a chef when the food tastes funny.

We selected a salad and a cold turkey sandwich.  There was so much food we brought half of it home.  We had a cooler in the truck of the Silver Fox, so Mary went to Tubby’s Liquor and got a bag of ice; the rest is history.

Why is a polar bear a cheap pet to have?  Because it lives on ice.

Mary wanted to go to Shenandoah for a year; we finally made it.

After our meal, we walked around the little stream and visited the Koi.

Fact:  The oldest koi fish ever was a koi named Hanako was born in 1791 and didn’t die until 1977, which means she lived to be 226!

It was a relaxed afternoon, finally.

The Koi were in the shade as they can get sunburned if they stay in the open.

The Koi were huge!

Paul is signaling to the fish.

Now, where did I put my fishing pole?

From Shenandoah, we went to doctor number two and did not leave until 5:00 PM.   He agreed to perform the follow-up to the surgery.  We will go to Detroit for the surgery in about a week, and Colleen will stay with Scout.

To the Elks for a Ronnie DJ Night.  Our neighbors joined us; we had almost eighteen of the gang with us tonight.  Three couples are on vacation, and we missed them.

Even with a sore foot, Mary and I did well.

We were going home after the dance and I captured the girls in the parking lot.

We departed the dance at about 9:30 PM, and I immediately crashed as the heel and knee drove me crazy.

Off To The Elks For Lunch With Neighbors!

Fact: Snakes can predict earthquakes. Many animals are able to predict earthquakes to varying levels of success. Yet, snakes are the most reliable, sensing earthquakes from as far as 75 miles away (121 km). What’s more impressive is that they can sense an earthquake as many as five days before it actually occurs! When snakes sense an earthquake, they often leave their nests, even if the temperature is too cold.

I was up early putting the final touches on some old web pages. A computer once beat me at chess. But it was no match for me at kickboxing.

Today we took guests to Girls Night Out.  Our neighbor Jeff has two neighbors who are looking for activities and things to do and we thought the Elks would be perfect.  We had a super lunch and several members of the gang visited with our friends.

Jeff and Paul share a similar sense of humor!

From the Elks, we went home and got some goodies for Jan and then visited with Jan for a while.  At 3:15 PM, we departed Jan’s and went to get a pedicure; yes, I joined in and had my toes done also!

I mentioned to Jan that a clear conscience is usually the sign of a bad memory. We laughed because what happens at Jan’s, stays at Jan’s.

We visited Jan.

It is quite relaxing especially with the massage system built into the chairs.

Getting the toes serviced!

Finally, we headed home and on the way we sent pictures of Bob C. to Dru, his “blind date” for this Sunday.

One half of the Sunday blind date.

It was early when we got home so we sat outside on the patio for a good hour before deciding to go into the hot tub for another hour of relaxing.  While sitting there in my “all together”, Mary kept ;looking at my tummy.  I told her, I don’t have a beer gut. I have a protective covering for my rock-hard abs.

Hump Day Returns

Fact: In a group of 23 people, there is a 50% chance that two will share the same birthday.

Progress comes measured in inches.  The bullnose caps are being put on the top of the beds so we can sit and do our gardening.  We will have the bullnose finished by mid-next week, and the walkways formed up for the big pour.  Then we get to play in the first for a couple of weeks.

We are making progress slowly but surely.

The cleaning folks are due at 8:30 AM, so Mary and I decided to start our Halloween tradition early.  We went to Roger’s Gardens in Corona Del Mar, about 20 minutes from Casa Valencia.

Our first event of the season!

Click and join the fun!

Mary decided we ought to dress for the occasion.  She dug out one of my many Halloween shirts from my holiday shirt collection.

Am I being watched?

Not to be outdone, Mary got her Halloween garment and completed the ensemble with a Halloween hat!

Want to see what we saw?  Join us here and sit back and enjoy!

We found the way to the spooky place.

We tried to get into the Farmhouse, but it was too crowded, so we went to the Santa Ana Elks and met up with Dr. Capps.  While there, we also requested a large table for Girls Night Out for Mary, and I are bringing three new guests from our neighborhood.

We had lunch at the Elks.

Why did the ghost go into the bar?  For the Boos.

Mary got a new Halloween hat at Roger’s, and it looks great on her; but what doesn’t?

Mary likes her new hat!

Upon returning home, we noticed more bullnose had been added to the top of the beds.  Remember, each of the center three beds is 4’x25′ or 100 square feet in size.

More progress!

We had planned to go dancing this evening, but we got a call from David and Dianne asking if we would like to join them at a local restaurant to celebrate their 49th anniversary.  Duh!  We dropped everything and got ready.  We shot out of Casa Valencia like a cannon.

Happy 49th anniversary!

We asked David, Why don’t mummies take time off?  They’re afraid to unwind.    The Italian restaurant had been at that location for over forty years.

We, of course, enjoyed everything.

We are working on number two.

We still managed to go dancing because dinner was over at 7:15 PM, and the Tustin Senior Citizens Center was only a few short blocks away.  David and Dianne joined us in dancing.

Fantastic music at the Tustin Senior Citizens Center.

What do you get when you cross a vampire and a snowman?  Frostbite.

We danced for two hours, but then my knee began to act up, and we had to head home.

We danced until 9:30 PM.

When we got home, I went VFR to bed, and Mary hit the knee with a bag of ice.  It did help, and I was able to sleep.  Tomorrow it will be better!

Another Busy Day

Fact: Sushi has plenty of health benefits.  If you’re curious about sushi’s nutrition facts, you’ll be happy to know that sushi is swimming in health benefits.  The most apparent nutrient is omega-3 fatty acids, a heart-healthy fat that most fish and seafood have.  Sushi is also primarily low in fat and high in protein.  Nori, which is found in many sushi, is rich in vitamins A, B-6, and C, as well as iodine.

The sun rises, and the day begins!  We are off like a shot in the Silver Fox to an appointment in Los Alamitos with Dr. Rucker.  The good news was that the pulmonary system was OK, but he suggested losing some weight to help my breathing.  So, 190, here I come!

While we were gone, we left Scout outside to supervise the contractors.  Scout had his own personal electric fan blowing over his bed!

“I am not spoiled, daddy!”

Before leaving, I loaded the washing machine, and Mary captured a photo.

The new washing machine/dryer is amazingly quiet!

After the appointment, we picked up Irene at her car repair facility and brought her home with us.  She borrowed our van while her car is in the shop, and we are happy to help!

This vehicle has been outstanding for us!

Mary’s granddaughter, Mega, was scheduled to come down and have her eyes checked at 2:00 PM, so we quickly straightened up the house (we were in the middle of putting up Halloween decorations).  We remembered that last year we had photos which will help us this year to place all the decorations. Take a gander!

Mary did the eye examination, and all was well.

Diane and Megan came to our house since they had not seen it and joined us for dinner.  I found out that Megan likes sushi so I showed her my fish tank!

Well, maybe not really!

I asked my Sushi Chef what his favorite roll was.  He said payroll.

I had just ordered a sushi-making kit from Amazon for Mary.  After we found out Megan likes sushi, we gave it to her!  Now she can learn how and teach us!

Megan and Diane visited us!  We had a wonderful visit.

The corners of the planters are almost done, and that took quite a while to set up and make all the cuts.

After the kids departed, we decided to visit Jan and bring her some of the remaining cherry pie we had for dessert.  Good choice, or we would have eaten it ourselves.  We got home a little after 9:00 PM and crashed.

It was a good day!

We Stayed Home And Worked Around The House

Fact: Pringles are not potato chips. From 2007 to 2009, Pringles had a court issue where judges debated whether Pringles were potato chips or not, and in 2009, it was ruled that they were potato chips. However, Pringles are just 42% potato; the rest are made of wheat.

It was in the 70s this morning when we got up; maybe this hot spell is now over?

Yeah! We can turn down the air conditioner!

It’s that time of the year, so we were in the garage doing a search and seizure mission in the garage attic. We found our Halloween decorations, and they are now in the kitchen, two stacks of four tubs,  ready to be distributed throughout the house.   We decided we needed a better way to store them next year because they were behind the Christmas things at the far end of the garage attic.   My knees were sore from crawling back and forth.

I want to be something terrifying for Halloween this year, so I’m dressing up as a cell phone battery with 2% battery remaining.

While we got some of it up, 80% is still in the boxes for us to do tomorrow. Do you remember last year?

We will recreate the Halloween tree tomorrow!

I remember when Halloween was the scariest night of the year. Now, it’s Election night.

Mary got the Halloween flag, and with proper ceremony (we turned loose 2022 bats into the neighborhood), the flag was raised.

Mary found the Halloween flag.

Mary decided to make Chicken Cacciatore means “hunter” in Italian. In cuisine, alla cacciatora is a meal prepared “hunter-style” with onions, herbs, tomatoes, bell peppers, and sometimes wine.

You can see the entire process by clicking here, as I am now capturing the culinary adventures of Dr. Mary.

We brought the TV to the kitchen and watched a movie while cooking up a storm.

I diced and sliced and did the Mise en place thing. Mise en place (pronounced meez ahn plas) is a wonderful French cooking term that literally translates to ‘put in place.’ The purpose of mise en place is to allow the chef to cook most efficiently without having to stop.

Since it was almost Halloween, Mary asked for the eye of the newt and toe of the frog, wool of the bat, and tongue of the dog, but we were fresh out! I did notice Scout high-tailing it out of the room!

Magic is being made!

A meal fit for a king!

After dinner, we wandered over to Jeff’s and met with his long-term friend (over 50 years). We sat out by the fire, drinking wine and slapping mosquitos. We talked and shared stories for two hours; it was beautiful. Having great neighbors is a great thing.

Stories were told and re-told!

Arriving home at 8:30 PM, we decided to crash as tomorrow is a busy day!

Tea For Ten?

Fact: It takes around 2,000 tiny leaves to make just one pound of finished tea.  There are more than 1,500 types of teas in the world.  Tea plants grow wild in Asia, but over 25 countries cultivate tea as a plantation crop.  The very best tea comes from high elevations and is hand-picked.

Irene stayed with us last night so she could go to the Elks Tea Party this afternoon and not have to drive back to Long Beach.   After yesterday’s long walk in the park, Mary and I didn’t move until past 7:30 AM; almost unheard of!

We departed Casa Valencia at about 9:45, arriving at the Elks at 10:10 AM.  Robin followed us, and Robin, Irene, and Mary set everything up.  I went next door and had breakfast!

Join Dr. Mary and the ladies for “The Glamor Of Tea.”

Mary was hard to find in the crowd!

The ladies seemed to enjoy the tea.  We missed Becca, but she was at Disneyland celebrating her niece’s birthday.

Ladies, your tea is ready!

We returned home, took a nap, and at 6:00 PM, we headed for Chino Hills, where we danced for several hours.  It is hard to keep us down!

To The Huntington Jeeves!

Fact: Henry Edwards Huntington (February 27, 1850 – May 23, 1927) was an American railroad magnate and collector of art and rare books. Huntington settled in Los Angeles, where he owned the Pacific Electric Railway and substantial real estate interests. In addition to being a businessman and art collector, Huntington was a significant booster for Los Angeles in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Many places in California are named after him.

We decided NOT to drive home after the dance last night, so we stayed at a local Marriott in Pasadena. In the morning, we got up and headed to the Huntington, where I have been a member for twenty-plus years.

Mary likes to walk, so we did just that! Please join us for a walk in the gardens at the Huntington.

Our first “stop” was the terrific cactus gardens.

We stopped to catch our breath and take in the silent beauty of the plans.

The cacti seemed unusually active this morning.

We felt like someone was watching us!

We walked through the Australian gardens and the lily pools and finally onto the Japanese gardens.

We had to kiss the lion to get past him!

The Japanese gardens were beautiful. The house is still standing after 120 years! A new house is being added to the upper level of these gardens; we will see it next time.

We did not do the stairs; we took a side path!

From Japan, we walked over to China and had a little rest.

By this time, we had walked for almost two and a half hours; we were tired.

One more burst of energy came forth, and we walked through the gallery building and over to the rose garden. It was worth the push!

Into the herb garden to examine their current crops!

I love those roses.

The rose garden was blooming nicely, but in a couple of months, they will be chopped off and ready for spring.

We checked our watches and did over three hours, 1,075 calories (each), and walked nearly 7,100 steps.

We drove home, took a tiny little nap, and at 5:00 PM, Irene, Mary, and I went to the Elks to, you guessed it, dinner and dancing. The band was 5-Star, and they were terrific. We will use these guys again with perfect dance music and not too loud!

Irene and Mary had a good laugh.

David and Irene enjoyed the music.

We finally headed for home at about 9:30 PM after a long, long day1

Friday And We Are Off For An Adventure

Fact: Raindrops are not actually shaped like teardrops. In fact, the most common raindrop is shaped more like a hamburger bun, according to the United States Geological Survey. Small raindrops (radius less than 1 millimeter) are spherical; larger ones assume a shape more like that of a hamburger bun. “When they get larger than a radius of about 4.5 millimeters, they rapidly become distorted into a shape rather like a parachute with a tube of water around the base – and then they break up into smaller drops.”

We arose at 6:00 AM, and it was 84 degrees outside; our air conditioner was already running.  Kay, which is not expected to directly hit the mainland U.S., will break the heat wave that has sweltered the region. It may also help to douse ongoing wildfires, but the storm is predicted to bring wind and flooding to much of the region.  According to the NWS, the storm system will bring 2 to 4 inches of rain to Southern California.

We departed for Altadena at 1:00 PM and arrived at the hotel about 50 minutes later. We had a drink at the hotel and them got ready to go to the dance.

Time For Girls Night Out!

Fact: Beautiful St. Augustine, Florida, was settled by Spanish admiral Pedro Menendez de Aviles on this day in history, Sept. 8, 1565. Continuously inhabited now for 457 years, it’s the oldest city in North America.

To brighten up your day!

He will never find his way out!

Today will be exciting as cement mixers and pump trucks will be doing their thing, making the planter walls solid retaining walls. I pity the poor people who may want to remove the garden someday; they will need dynamite!

We needed a pumper because we have a large parcel of land and a 250′ distance between the street and the backyard garden.

Did You Know? Until the early 20th century, concrete was mixed on the job site and transported from the cement mixer to the formwork, either in wheelbarrows or buckets lifted by cranes. This procedure required a lot of time and labor. In 1927, German engineers Max Giese and Fritz Hull came upon the idea of pumping concrete through pipes. They pumped concrete to a height of 38 meters (125 ft) and a distance of 120 meters (130 yds).

A “line pump,” or trailer-mounted concrete pump, is either mounted on a truck or placed on a trailer. This pump requires steel or flexible concrete placing hoses to be manually attached to the outlet of the machine and feed the concrete to the place of application. The length of the hoses varies; typical are 10′, 12.5′, 25′, and 50′ long hoses, depending on the diameter. Due to their lower pump volume, line pumps are used for smaller volume concrete applications such as swimming pools, sidewalks, single-family home concrete slabs, and most ground slabs.

The pumper had almost 200 feet to reach the garden.

I parked my car in front of the house, blocking as much area as possible so the trucks could get in quickly.

We got ready to go to the gym at 7:30 AM so we could arrive at 8:00 AM sharp and return home by 9:30 AM as we wanted to see the action before leaving for Girls Night Out. Well, it did not happen. As we left, the hoses were being laid out from the street to the garden.

I heard another silly law being proposed to ban guns! Ban guns and shooting stops; ban lighters and fires, stop! Same logic; when will they learn it is NOT the guns?

The moronic legislatures used the same logic. They do not understand the problem!!

We were gone when they started pouring the concrete, but I had the security camera overlooking the garden Thai could watch the process; it took him about two hours to put the concrete down through the openings in the block. Now the wall is solid cement and will not move, ever!

The video reveals all.

I came to the Elks with David because we had just been at UCI over in Orange. Mary drove my car to the Elks, and at the end of lunch, Mary and I went home together.

It was Girl’s Night Out at the Elks.

I ordered my special, which is called a chili size. It was invented in the mid-1930s in Los Angeles and is simply a nice meat patty smothered in chili with a nice portion of onions and cheese. It is delicious

I overate – I did a chili-size.

What I should’ve had was what Mary ordered. She had a wedge salad with a side of filet mignon steak, which looked mighty good. BTW, I was the recipient of all of Mary’s onions.

Mary remarked, “A man goes to the doctor with a piece of lettuce sticking out of his ear. The doctor looks at it and says “that’s just the tip of the iceberg.”

Mary was a good girl!

David knew about half of the people there today, so he did not feel uncomfortable, but as you know, David never feels uncomfortable. A fantastic guy and fun to be with.

David stopped in as he took me to UCI to get an MRI appointment.

As usual, girls’ night out was a giggle fest, with everybody telling jokes, relating old stories, and shooting harpoons back and forth across the table.

This is what a happy girl looks like!

When I arrived home, everybody was already gone. We walked the construction area, and it looks pretty good. The estimate of two weeks to complete is probably right on.

I have decided to fill one planter at a time and ensure I got what I wanted instead of ordering 30 yards of soil, which I would be unhappy with! My little wheelbarrow can handle 1/2 yard at a  time, so I figure sixteen trips from the front yard to the back, and I can fill one bed. I can do this, and it will be excellent exercise.

These walls are now SOLID.

Scout, The Wonder Dog, wants to know how much he has earned supervising the contractors. We are in serious negotiations at this very moment.

Scout gives his nod of approval!

Mary had an Orange County Ophthalmology meeting this evening and departed at 5:00 PM. She was a past president of this organization and still knows several members. I continued work in the He-Shed, took out the trash, set the rat traps, did some wash, and worked on the daily diary. She returned at 9:30 PM, and I can honestly say I missed her!

Our security system worked, and I was alerted when the garage door opened. I can and got two glasses of wine. I had just taken a shower, so I was in my robe. A great idea came to my little pea brain. I dropped my robe, had two glasses of wine ready, and stood just inside the door to the garage. When she opened it, she yelled out a blood-curdling scream! Was it my magnificent naked body that scared her or just me being there? We will never know!

She made me put up the following sign!

It’s Mid Week; What Should We Do?

Fact: Paul retired from North American Aviation, Rockwell International, and Boeing on 3/21/2007 after 41 years of service.  It was 5648 days ago, and he loves every second of it!  (15 Years, 5 Months, and 17 Days).

Mary retired from being an eye surgeon on 11/22/2021, just before the holiday!  It was 289 days ago, and she now has time to live!  (9 Months and 17 Days).

Remember, with retirement; you can wake up in the morning with zero to do and go to bed having done a mere half of it!

We were up early, and I hit the He-Shed ready to do battle.  We soon after went to Home Depot and got four 2″x4″x10′ timbers so I could add room in the “attic.”  Things like tables, chairs, hoses, and tarps are now stored about our heads and give us room to move.

Back in the May!

On our way to the store, our contractor delivered waterproof cement bags.  Rapid Set Waterproofing Mortar is a high-performance, polymer-modified cement coating.  Durable in multiple environments, Waterproofing Mortar is a blend of Rapid Set hydraulic cement, high-performance additives, and quality aggregates.  It has a working time of 30-minutes, can be exposed to hydrostatic pressure from 3-days to 5-days, and cures to a gray concrete color.  Use Waterproofing Mortar on interior or exterior concrete and masonry surfaces above and below grade.  It can waterproof basements, foundations, retaining walls, tilt-up concrete, cast-in-place concrete, and precast concrete.

Waterproofing today; we are getting close to being done!

The coating is applied by hand on the inside of the beds, so the moisture does not discolor the stone when wet.

One coat will do the trick!

Once applied, the water barrier is set, and no water will flow through the bed to the outside wall!  Each of the three center beds are two 1/2x 4 x 22 or 220 cubic feet or eight cubic yards or $560 in dirt!  We found a good mix called “Soil Mix” available directly across Katella from our house!

The coating is applied by hand!

While the contractor was doing his thing, I added 2x4s to the top of the He-Shed so the folding tables, tarps, hoses, and flexible drip lines would have a home; I would get a lot more walking space1

The He-She gets a facelift!

When the temperature reached 100 degrees, Mary ordered me into the house, and we talked.   The phone rang, and it was Jan; she was in an uproar.  Her refrigerator was dead, and her daughter ordered a new one.  Three days after the new one arrived, she opened the freezer, and the damned handle came off in her hands.  To make things worse, someone came out and wanted $260 to repair it!

Good news; I got the insurance companies OK to proceed with a three=tesla MRI!

We dropped everything and headed to her house via Ralph’s market, where we brought her sushi, crackers, pinwheels, and several other things, including a “Love You” card.  We got her over the hump, which is not easy for someone living alone and 80+ years of age.  We are happy to be there for her.  Our motto: Pay It Forward!

Returning home, we popped into the pool and floated around for a while.  It was 86 degrees and quite lovely!  We did cottage cheese and fresh tomatoes for dinner, a great way to reduce weight.  I am tipping the scale at 206 now, on my way down to 195!

We crashed at 9:00 PM as tomorrow is a big day!

Its Starting To Cool Down!

Fact:  For each minute of the day, 1 billion tonnes of rain falls on the Earth.

The guys were here early today, attempting to beat the heat!

We put the fan/mister on the wall where the construction is underway today so Gary and the crew would stay cool.  The system works well; it shot a stream of mist almost 30 feet across the new garden!

The 95-degree day all of a sudden got bearable.

Gary said he would be done in about two weeks, so we are researching soil for the beds now.

The walls are all up, but we need to reinforce the walls by pumping concrete down inside the walls since they are, in essence, retaining walls.

The retaining walls are almost done!

At the top of the beds, the height will be three total blocks.  Because of the yard’s slope, the height at the back of the bed will be eight inches lower.  This height difference means Mary will tend the front of the beds, and I will tend the back.

Scout gives his approval.  He wants to know what he will get to tend; I told him about the fruit trees and grape vines.

In two weeks, these will be loaded with soil and veggies.

The holes will be force-fed a wet concrete slurry so that it will run down inside the bricks easily, and when dried, the walls will be solid and will not move.  They could be used for a bomb shelter if needed!

In two weeks, I will aim for a mix of 30% compost, 60% topsoil, and 10% potting soil and fill these beds almost to the top; that means about 45 yards of soil!

Did You Know?  True potting soil is actually “soil-less.” Topsoil is for planting in the ground, and potting soil is for growing in containers.  Topsoil is sand or clay (ground-up rocks) mixed with organic materials such as compost.  Potting soil is a mixture of peat moss and other organic materials such as composted sawdust.

Thursday, a pumper truck and a cement mixer will be here to fill in the holes.

We finished Mrs. Maisel and are awaiting season five, which is coming in late 2022 or early 2023.

I was going to wake up early to go jogging, but my toes voted against me 10 to 1.  Maybe my toes knew that we had a 4:00 PM gym appointment?

We departed for the gym at 3:30 AM.  The hour’s exercises are perfect for us as all of our muscles hurt afterward.   The pain goes away as we drive home, and by the time we reach our destination, it is time for a chocolate Sunday and a nap!

We take different streets to avoid the schools; schools can foul up traffic in amazing ways.

Mary often sings while she exercises.  I can hear singing, “One little two little three little calories, four little five little six little calories, seven little eight little nice little calories, ten little calories gone!

Well, as you know from the laws of physics, matter cannot be destroyed, so those ten little calories run across the gym and jump on me!  The more I exercise, the more I weigh.

We work out twice a week!

After an hour, I thought pushing eighty was exercise enough!

After returning home. Mary was fiddling in the kitchen and came up with a modified zoodle recipe using tuna in the spaghetti sauce; I had never heard of such a thing, but it was DELICIOUS.  Mary worked her magic again.

Mary is at work in the kitchen.

Not only was it a palette pleaser, but it was pretty also!

Delicious!

Scout loved the smell of the sauce, so we stayed near the kitchen.

Scout is providing us with adult supervision,

After dinner, we got a glass of wine and visited Jeff, our neighbor.  We chatted with him until after the sun went down.  We are fortunate to have great neighbors.

We posted a sign to ensure no one enters the garden area uninvited.!

We hit the sack at 8:30 PM, meaning we were getting 9 PM to 6 AM sleep time; we needed to be as active as we were.

Another Hot Day Is Ahead!

Fact:  The hottest natural temperature recorded was July 10th, 1913, in Death Valley, California.  It was 134 degrees Fahrenheit.

It was 80 when we got up this morning; hard to believe, almost like being in Phoenix or Las Vegas!  Rumor has it the temperatures are starting to drop.

I could not sleep, so I did the Daily Diary early.  I looked at the thermometer, and it was already 75 degrees!

We walked the garden to determine what must be done before it got hot, and suddenly, we heard a flock of geese!  They landed in the schoolyard behind us and stayed there for quite a while.

Mary told me this reminded her of action movies and her favorite actor.  I was puzzled, and she said, “Goose Willis.”  Of course, I had to replay, so I asked Mary, “Which side of a goose has the most feathers?’  She studied the geese for a while and gave up.  I responded with, “The outside!”  Mary chased me back into the house, honking.

They are loud and very messy!

We got a text bright and early from our dance group; we got together for a group photo.  We look pretty good after dancing for two hours.

A picture of the gang from last night’s dance.

We watched our series for a while, and Mary, not to be idle, fixed her hat for the tea; I assisted by drilling holes in the little space-related decorations and provided thin steel wire to fasten them onto her hat.

MA\ary’s hat is ready for the tea.

I worked in the garage for a while, attempting to move tools not used regularly into the He-Shed.  I assisted Mary in slicing onions and slicing the zucchini and wondered what she was up to in the kitchen.  At lunchtime, I was provided with a delicious stuffed zucchini, and it was terrific; I ate two pieces.

Did You Know?

  • A zucchini has more potassium than a banana.
  • The flower of the zucchini plant is edible, and fried squash blossoms are considered a delicacy.
  • The world’s largest zucchini on record was 69 1/2 inches long and weighed 65 lbs.  Bernard Lavery of Plymouth Devon, UK

Mary did it again, stuffed zucchini!

While having lunch, the news came on, and I watched Biteme and his seriously ill-informed press secretary “talk.”  It reminded me of what the two cowboys said to each other.

I should not watch any news program; it is too depressing.

Today’s high was less than one hundred but still quite unpleasant.

How hot is it?

  • The cows are giving evaporated milk.
  • The chickens are laying hard-boiled eggs.
  • I saw a dog chasing a cat, and they were both walkin’
  • Hot water now comes out of both taps.
  • Every time I think about ice, water pours out of my ears.
  • You burn your hand opening the car door.
  • You realize that asphalt has a liquid state.
  • The birds have to use potholders to pull worms out of the ground.
  • The potatoes cook underground, and all you have to do to have lunch is to pull one out and add butter, salt, and pepper.
  • Farmers feed their chickens crushed ice to keep them from laying hard-boiled eggs.

We went to Jan’s in the afternoon and brought her some ice cream and other goodies.  The sun was partially obscured because of the fires around the local area, and I began coughing, just looking at the sky.

Houston, we have a problem.

We stayed until almost sunset and then returned home to watch Mrs. Maisel; we are on the last season and episode four.

Hotter Than Heck!!

Fact:  Until they are needed, the balls at Wimbledon are stored in refrigerated containers at 68F.

It will be hot today, so we hit the swim spa at 6:00 AM sharp!  We worked in the yard for a few minutes, but it was 80 degrees at 7:00 AM.

No kidding, today will be hot, but Sunday will be over 100 degrees.

We watched our televangelist at 11:00 AM, and then Mary noticed the plants were dropping terribly.  So, even though it was not our day to water, I let the drip system work for 15 minutes in each of the current 18 zones.

At noon the weather report on the internet was 106 degrees, but our backyard weather station indicated 113 degrees!

We dressed for our Sunday night dancing session and then headed to Ralphs market to pick up some grapes for the dancers.

We got to PF Changs at 5:00 PM and waited in the bar for others to arrive; we had ten people at dinner!  Great fun!

Mary, Beverly, and Bob

After having Chinese food, my cookie was missing the piece of paper on the inside!  It was unfortunate.

Chinese food is amazing, but I do find it hard to believe that a chicken fried this rice.

Mary, Paul, and Betty

Chinese food to go $15.  Gas to go pick it up $1.50.  Getting home and realizing they forgot one of my containers…. Riceless.

Ed, George, and Bill

At the end of the meal, the waiter went to his boss and asked for hazard pay; I wonder why?

The gang is all here!

I’m always the last one eating, but I know why!  Rice guys finish last.

We danced until 9:00 PM but had to head home as Scout, The Wonder Dog, needed his time to go outside.  It was too hot to leave him out when we departed.

It was 80 outside at 10:00 PM last night; when will this stop??

Saturday Night Live!

Fact:  Live from New York … It’s Saturday Night!  Chevy Chase first uttered that famous line on October 11th, 1975.  The sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live would become one of the longest-running series of all time, with over 47 seasons as of 2022.

We got up at 6:00 AM and went into the swim spa!  The temperature was already 77 degrees outside!  From the spa, we went to the yard and worked for about two hours before the heat was unbearable.

How hot was it, you asked? The farmers are feeding their chickens crushed ice to keep them from laying hard-boiled eggs.

Joe called, and he, plus five teenagers, were headed in our direction at 11:00 AM.  We decided pizza was for lunch; it was too hot to cook anything inside even though the house was 77 degrees.

Robin came over, and she and Mary worked on the table settings for the upcoming tea party.  It looked pretty good!

OMG, does NASA know about this?

I took a short nap before cleaning up and got ready to go to Campus JAX in Newport.  We went with David and Dianne meeting them there at 5:30 PM for drinks and dinner.

The music was terrific!

We all had or tried the shrimp-stuffed avocado, which was excellent, and they used a little soy sauce in the mixture to give it a kick!

Wonderful!

The restaurant specialized in Creole cooking, so when I spotted the spicy Jambalaya, I went for it.  It was pretty good.

Did Youy Know? Creole cuisine (French: cuisine créole, Spanish: cocina criolla) is a style of cooking originating in Louisiana, United States, which blends West African, French, Spanish, and Amerindian influences,as well as influences from the general cuisine of the Southern United States.

Creole cuisine revolves around influences found in Louisiana from populations present in Louisiana before the sale of Louisiana to the United States in the Louisiana Purchase of 1803.

The term Creole describes the population of people in French colonial Louisiana which consisted of the descendants of the French and Spanish upper classes, and over the years the term grew to include native-born slaves of African descent as well as those of mixed racial ancestry.

I was indeed spicy!!  The sausage was probably the culprit.

I danced with Mary and Dianne, and the music was terrific!  After the second dance, I asked Dianne, “What do you get when you play country music backward?”  I could not figure out why she looked at me so funny, but I answered the question: “You get back your wife, your dog, and your truck.”

Mary and David!

We were not on the floor, but you can listen to what we were hearing while dancing.

We stayed until a little past 9:00 PM and then headed home.  After getting home, we were going to sit on the patio and watch the moon, but Mary fell asleep, and so did I, on the patio!

Tomorrow it is going to be hot!

The Week Is Gone!

Fact: Men Sweat More Than Women!  While women have more sweat glands than men, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, men’s sweat glands are more active, leading them to sweat more than women.  The more you sweat, the more quickly you can dehydrate, leading to other health issues.

According to a recent article I just read on nutrition, they said eating right doesn’t have to be complicated.  Nutritionists say there is a simple way to tell if you’re eating right.  Colors.  Fill your plates with bright colors.  Greens, reds, yellows.

In fact, I did that this morning.  I had an entire bowl of M&M’s.  It was delicious!  I never knew eating right could be so easy.

We hit the backyard first thing before it gets hotter.  We planted a mess of onions and dug up several planter boxes to put in new veggies.  The She-Cart is perfect since it holds a lot, is easy to maneuver, and I can pick it up loaded and put the contents into the green trash can.

The working cart!

We have a new batch of cilantro now, and we checked out the drip system as we planted.  Mary is cooking so much she ought to have a larger herb garden.

If Mary wants a herb garden I will make sure she gets one!

Maybe this will keep away the pests?

I had had these long white boxes for over ten years, and we will probably still keep them after the garden gets finished; we will use them for herbs.

We have cilantro by the bushels.

Did I say onions?  I remember when Mary was surprised when I cut the onion in the shape of a die.  I just followed the instruction asking me to dice the onions.

I asked Mary, “What do you get when you cross a bean and an onion?  “She waited for the obvious smart-ass answer that was coming, “Teargas.”

Onions in about 6-8 weeks.

Our whirlygigs look pretty good; they will be great in the new garden.

Did You Know?  A whirligig is an object that spins or whirls or has at least one part that spins or whirls.  A whirligig can also be a pinwheel, buzzer, comic weather-vane, gee-haw, spinner, whirlygig, whirlijig, whirlyjig, whirlybird, or simply a whirly.  Whirligigs are most commonly powered by the wind but can be hand, friction, or motor powered.  They can be used as a kinetic garden ornament.  They can also be designed to transmit sound and vibration into the ground to repel burrowing rodents in yards.

The whirley-gig was running this morning.

At 11:00 AM, we went to breakfast at The Original Pancake House in Orange.  We split a veggie omelet, and I had a side of bacon.  The whole bill was only $24.  There were 1980 calories in the omelet; thank goodness we split it!

From there, we went to Huntington Beach and visited Mary’s old office, where I had two new glasses ready for pickup.  Dr. Mary takes care of my eyes.

What do you call a student studying to become an eye doctor?  A pupil.

Mary told me of her Chinese patient, a lovely guy!  Mary said to the Chinese man: “We found the problem; you have a cataract.” The Chinese man replies: “No, I drive a Rincon.”

We reversed course and set sail for home via CVS, where I picked up a new blood pressure medicine.

The temperature outside was in the high 90s, so we stayed inside and watched TV.

Dinner is served, or should I say “snipped!”

We got a text from Lisa, who was winging their way west for a week in the islands.  Lisa is my niece and a lovely young lady!

Lisa sent a picture of her and her new hubby on their way to Hawaii for their honeymoon!

We binged on “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisal” until 9:30 PM and then crashed.  We are preparing for the weekend; it will be warm!

It is so hot… I saw a dog chasing a cat, and they were both walking.

Girls Night Out; Our Favorite Day Of The Week!!

Fact: You don’t need to be a dedicated composter to reap similar benefits.  Call it cheating, but applying used coffee grounds, eggshells, chopped-up banana peels, and other organic matter directly to your soil (no composting required) can offer plants nutrients as they decompose.  For already-growing beds, scatter and bury the items within the first few inches of soil.

We bounded out of bed, hit the showers, and got ready to exercise at the gym for an hour!

Dr. Mary says, “That is true.”

The gym was great, we worked hard for about an hour, but the room was quite cool.  We usually take our little readers with us and finish off fifty-plus pages.

Gary started work at 6:00 AM as the forecast said it would be near 97 degrees today!  We captured him at work using our security camera mounted on the She-Shed.

If you have a pickle problem, it is best to dill with it.

Early in the morning, Gary was at work!

We went to the Santa Ana Elks and had our weekly “Girls Night Out” session.  Mary and I were good because we had Chinese salads, and I had chicken, and she did salmon.  We both tried the potato-broccoli soup; it was terrific.

My girl at Girls Night Out

We were captured finishing the hot chocolate drink; again, we were good because we shared it instead of having two.  I eat cake every day because it’s someone’s birthday somewhere out there and I like celebrating it.

Smoooooch!

Gary was gone for the extended weekend, and we are about three weeks away from finishing.  We had an extra course of block added to the wall.  It will be a tad higher than Los Alamitos, but we can still sit on the way, and we will not have to worry about the clay soil at the bottom.   I will need more than 40 yards of new soil at $60/yard!

Progress has stopped for the next four days!

It’s mating season for the wheelbarrows!  Yes, they are His and Hers but notice they are both two-wheeled, so we old folks won’t tip them over so easily!

His and Hers.

I planted onions and Swiss chard at 5:00 PM when the heat was still in the upper 90s.  I stayed in the shade the whole time except for getting bags of potting mix.  The plants were soaked with water and should be able to withstand the onslaught of heat this weekend.

More to plant in the morning.

We watched Mrs. Maisel until our funny bones were sore.  To the Swim Spa, we went for a well-deserved soak.  We heard Disneyland’s fireworks at the firepit while we watched the nighttime sky.

View from the Swim Spa.

Time to crash at 10:00 PM.  Tomorrow is going to be a busy day.  We are NOT looking forward to Saturday!

Had too much wine last night.  Have no idea how I got home from the swim spa.

It’s A Hot Time In The ‘Ol Town Tonight

Fact: In recent years, the average heat wave in major U.S. urban areas has been about four days long. This is about a day longer than the average heat wave in the 1960s (see Figure 1). The average heat wave season across the 50 cities in this indicator is about 49 days longer now than it was in the 1960s.

I made a mistake and listened to the “news”; I am appalled at the garbage that the so call press burps out.  Makes me think of a very wise man who I really admire.

It’s gonna be a hot one today as it is already 95 degrees, and it is only 1:00 PM.  We stayed inside and watched TV until almost 2:30 PM, when we went to the nursery and picked up a load of veggies; we are almost out of onions!

No kidding, today will be hot but Saturday will be 102 degrees.

I ordered a mister that fits on a fan; connect it to the water supply, and you are ready to go!  It will arrive on the 6th of September.

We can hardly wait to fire this puppy up!

We stayed inside most of the day as it was 78 inside and 90+ outside.  We went to the nursery and procured a mess of veggies we will plant tomorrow after returning from the gym.

It was 103 degrees in downtown Orange.  If you figure in the wind chill factor, it’s only 102.

Dang, it was hot at the top of the hill!

On the way home, we stopped at Jan’s to say howdy and partake in a glass of wine.  We visited with Jan and laughed and giggled for an hour.

Love to visit Jan!

It is so hot… I saw two trees fighting over a dog.

We had a lite dinner and then headed for the Swim Spa, where the 95-degree water felt cool!  After a good soak, we decided it would be nice to sit outside in the 80-degree evening breeze and toast some marshmallows.

After the hot tub, we roasted marshmallows.

Did You Know? Althaiophobia is the fear of marshmallows, mostly caused by the gooey texture. Marshmallow is a type of confectionery that is typically made from sugar, water and gelatin whipped to a solid-but-soft consistency. It is used as a filling in baking or normally molded into shapes and coated with corn starch.

We looked up, and the sky was amazing, with little puffs of clouds everywhere.  The temperature was just right and we almost went swimming as the water was 84 degrees.

The sky was amazing.

We turned off the firepit and headed for bed at about 10:00 PM.  The house was a cool 78, and we used one of our box fans to circulate the air in the master bedroom; we slept well!

Night night all!

Good night Moon! Tomorrow morning, the gym awaits us.

We got mooned!!

Mix Up Day!

Fact: Bell peppers are fruit!  Surprised?  Scientists define fruit as the part of a plant that develops from a flower and has seeds.  So that means bell peppers — along with squash, cucumbers, and pumpkins — are fruits.  It’s up to you whether or not to include any of those items in your next fruit salad.

We were up early because the Home Comfort folks were due in at 8:00 AM to install a “runway” across the top of the attic so we could walk from one end of the hose to the other without disturbing the insulation.  A father and son team came at about 8:30 AM and worked for four hours.

Now it is easy to walk from one end of the attic to the other!

I was supposed to get an MRI today, but a screw-up in the paperwork undid the plans.  We spent an hour on the phone trying to unscrew the mess; we may know tomorrow.

We went to the gym at 4:00 PM and worked out for an hour.  We were happy it was air-conditioned because outside, it was in the mid-90s.

On the way home, we stopped at Ralphs market and got a few things we needed, including another watermelon.

A dangerous, record-breaking heat wave is expected to develop over Southern California over the next several days, prompting Excessive Heat Warnings for millions of people.

Temperatures will top 100 degrees in Los Angeles County and reach 112 degrees inland.

The National Weather Service has issued an Excessive Heat Warning from 11 AM.  Wednesday until 8 PM Monday for areas including the San Fernando Valley, the San Gabriel Valley, Orange County, San Bernardino County, the Santa Clarita Valley, and many other mountains and valleys as a sustained, high-pressure system lingers over Southern California.

We called friends and told them to head in our direction if it gets too hot; the pool will be open the entire weekend for anyone who needs to cool down!

We watched “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” on Prime and finished the first seven episodes; I have Mary hooked on the series.  The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’s Midge Maisel was inspired by the famous comedian and actress Joan Rivers.

Success; We WILL Overcome!

Fact: Rats destroy about 20% of agricultural products worldwide each year.

Mary and I are battling the rats, and we are winning.  We do understand we are outnumbered, but we will prevail.  This morning we investigated the battle lines and got two of the little buggers!  The word will get around, “DO NOT GO INTO THIS BACKYARD!!”

They never knew what hit them!

We loaded our pill boxes this morning.  You know you are old when it takes 30 minutes to fill two weeks’ worth of pill boxes!

Today we finally got a call back from UCI for my MRI ()I need a two+ Tesla machine).  We got September 12th, which was too far out as I want to get the procedure done ASAP.  So, we called David, who dropped by and took me to UCI in Orange.  With a few special visits to the imaging department, I have an appointment in Yorba Linda tomorrow at 1:00 PM!  It’s nice to know critical people!

On the way back, David and I stopped for a sandwich at his favorite shop in Orange., Cortina’s!

Cortina’s is family owned and operated and has been serving the Orange County community since 1963, when Papa Tony and his brother, Victor, first opened its doors.  From that day on, we have built our reputation upon loyal customers and lovers of food that taste the difference and relish the freshness in our quality products.  For us, here at Cortina’s, food and family are of utmost importance.  We have created a menu including recipes handed down from generation to generation.  Many of our products are made on the premises with traditional family recipes and the highest quality ingredients available.

Wow!  It was amazing!

We took the sandwiches home and brought one for Mary.  We had a good visit, and David saw the progress on the farm.

Around 5:45 PM, we visited the pharmacy for some necessities and visited Jan for a while.   Today we brought “Shipwreck Dinner” and “Apple Crisp” made from the apple’s from Gary’s tree; they were just picked.

We visit quite often because a) she is fun to visit and b) she like Mary’s cooking!

We watched a movie and made several “How Ya Doing” calls to our friends, including Mike Andersen, Lisa Chartier, Colleen, Vicky, and others.

We crashed early this evening, right after I baited the rat traps!
