OK, Here Is What Happened!

We did NOT go offline; we went on a road trip, but we didn’t want to advertise it here.  Mary and Paul decided that Mary’s 50th High School reunion was our target destination

See the overview of the entire trip!

The “term reunion” label is perhaps overstated, since her official reunion was canceled twice because of COVID-19.

Now, the event is a birthday party for one of the guys in Mary’s class.  He was kind enough to invite the whole class.  So, off we go! In a cloud of fur and a “Hi You Silver Van”… Yes, Scout is coming along!

Running Around Day

Fact:  Couples who laugh together stay together!  Robert Levinson, a psychology professor at the University of California Berkeley, invited couples into his lab and asked each partner to discuss something that irritated him or her about the other partner. The couples who tackled the stressful situation with laughter not only felt better at the moment, but had higher levels of relationship satisfaction and stayed together longer than couples who didn’t crack a smile.

This is how we started the day!

5:30 AM and we are in the swim spa

The fire is going, ready to warm us up!

The patio is our laughing place!

Warrrrrrrrm!

Time To Collapse!

Fact: The FICUS countries (France, Italy, China, the USA, and Spain) get the most visitors repeatedly.  They are like irresistible travel magnets.  France is the most visited country by travelers in the world, with 89 million arrivals, according to the latest UNWTO data related to 2018 travel flows.  Spain, the United States, China, and Italy are the most visited countries.  Together with France, they comprise the top 5 most visited countries globally.

We crashed today; it was a bust weekend.  We planned a vacation, so we did not even leave the house.

We Hit The Road At 8:00 AM!

Fact: The Ronald Reagan Presidential Library is the repository of presidential records from the administration of Ronald Reagan, the 40th president of the United States, and the burial place of the President and first lady, Nancy Reagan.

We readied ourselves for a big adventure today; we drove to Simi Valley and visited the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library.  More interesting is that we met with Mary’s college roommate, her daughter, and a cast of thousands!

It was going to be a 90-minute ride, so we added some time due to traffic.  The traffic was nil; we made it in 90 minutes but decided to have a little bite to eat before going to the library.  We went to a French Restaurant that happened to be open; it was called Jaques In Zee Box.

You can see the entire adventure here!

The weather was perfect; mid 70’s with a slight breeze!

The complex is quite impressive; President Reagan did it right!

He welcomed us at the entrance to the lobby; he was bigger than life-size.

It was so nice to have a President we were proud of instead of this bugger-brain we have today!

We took our pictures with Ronnie and Nancy; we were quite a gaggle.

One of Zack’s friends was a docent at the library, and we got a personal tour.

Did you know?  The title of docent is used in many countries for what Americans would call an associate professor—that is, a college or university teacher who has been given tenure but hasn’t yet achieved the rank of full professor.  But in the U.S., a docent is a guide who works at a museum, a historical site, or even a zoo or a park.  Docents are usually volunteers, and their services are often free of charge.

How we kept together for the next few hours was amazing to me!

Left to right: Dr. and Mrs Potts (Zack’s folks), Art & Becky Cheney (Bonnie’s parents), Ronnie and Nancy, Dr. Zachary & Bonnie Potts,  Paul and Dr. Mary, the kids  being to Boonnie and Zack!

Mary stepped up to the podium and began to speak.  Even old Jimma applauded!

It was a fun stop to take pictures.

The oval office was precisely to scale.  When the building was under construction, the ceiling was too high.  President Reagan told the crew to lower the office by four feet so the height of the office would be precisely 18.5 feet in the center.

We learned the story of the Resolute Desk.

Off to the hangar where Air Force One (when the President was on board) looked like it could fly right through the glass window and head out to do America’s work.

Mary (sometimes doing a Vanna White reenactment) shows us the plane

The communications compartment was upfront in the aircraft.  I was interested in crypto equipment.  The KG-84 was proudly on display.

Did You Know?  KG84 is a dedicated loop encryption device for digital data, developed in the early 1980s by the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) for use by the American Department of Defense (DoD) and NATO.  The device uses the SAVILLE encryption algorithm – jointly developed by GCHQ and the NSA – and was approved for all classification levels.  When unkeyed, the KG-84 is unclassified but remains a Controlled Cryptographic Item (CCI).  It was succeeded in the mid-1990s by KIV-7.

The original, as delivered airplane, had teletype equipment; the teletypes were replaced with computers so it would not look too old and out of place!

No matter how small, it worked!

Get ready for take-off!

The President’s office was private but had no bed, only a couch to sleep on.  The 707 had 1,200 square feet of room, and the new 747 had 4,000 square feet of space!

The hangar is quite roomy!

We are gathering so we can go to lunch together!

The kids found fun things to do!

After lunch, we kept going as there was a fantastic WWII Secrets exhibit.  Does Mary wonder if she should hitch a ride with the guys in the M4 tank?

The M4 Sherman, officially Medium Tank, M4, was the most widely used medium tank by the United States and Western Allies in World War II.  The M4 Sherman proved reliable, relatively cheap to produce, and available in great numbers.  It was also the basis of several other armored fighting vehicles, including self-propelled artillery, tank destroyers, and recovery vehicles.  Tens of thousands were distributed through the Lend-Lease program to the British Commonwealth and the Soviet Union.  The British named the tank for the American Civil War general William Tecumseh Sherman.

Why not?  See you guys at the front door!!

We walked for several hours and were ready to hit the road as we had another stop to make!

Bye-bye, all!

We popped over to Diane’s place and visited with her and the grandkids.  They were studying for their finals, so we did not stay long.  We did see the chickens.

Granddaughter not taller than Grandma!

We zoomed home on the 101 and then to the 405-22-55 making it by 7:00 PM.  I was tired from all that driving, so we dined on the patio and crashed.

Ancient History Time; Going Back To 1962!

Facts:

  1. John Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth in February of 1962
  2. Cuban Missile Crisis, when the USSR planned to deploy Missiles in Cuba, bringing the world to the brink of world war,
  3. Marilyn Monroe serenades President Kennedy on his birthday.
  4. Rioting on the University of Mississippi campus following Black student James Meredith attempting to enroll
  5. President Kennedy proposes a “Consumer Bill of Rights.”
  6. The Space Needle, an observation tower in Seattle, Washington, is completed.
  7. Marvel’s Spider-Man superhero makes his first appearance in a comic.
  8. Marilyn Monroe was found dead on August 5 after apparently overdosing on sleeping pills.
  9. The Columbus Day Storm (October 12) strikes Northern California, Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia.
  10. Oral Polio Vaccine developed by Albert Sabin was given to millions of children to combat Polio.

The new firepit (the old wood burner now converted to gas) is a beautiful way to see the new day. Coffee cup in hand, we watch the Sun creep higher into the sky while the warm wisps of air keep us toasty!

Time to wake up!

We did chores around the house and decided to put all the cooking-related books into the exercise room adjacent to the door so that they could be ready for our next cooking adventure.

We had a hair appointment at 10:00 AM. I get my ears lowered, and Mary goes through a couple of hours of effort to keep her beautiful!

Lee came over at 1:00 PM, and as we were walking in the door, Mary pulled up! Incredible timing because we needed to leave for Costa Mesa at 1:30 to pick up Louise, a fellow graduate of 1962 who I do NOT remember; we had a huge class.

We drove e to the Windom Hotel, not called “The W Hotel” in Westwood, and went to the pool area. We had about 25 people and their spouses from our class. It was an “informal” event; COVID kind of blew the formal plans up. Someone said they would plan a traditional get-together later this summer when the COVID thing gets put away!

Lee (in white hair and a Margarita in hand) visits friends.

Louise thought ahead and brought the high school annual so everyone came to visit her to see what everyone else looked like1

She has the evidence!

Gilbert,  Shar, and I started school together in 1949; Kindergarten at Shenandoah Elementary. Anders joined us in High School in 1959 and stayed through the 11th grade when his folks moved to Virginia. He came all the way out for a few hours’ visit.!

Gilbert, Shar, and Anders

Gil, Mary, and I had a good time. Gil looks the same as I remembered 60 years ago! He did accuse me of bringing my daughter with me; he still has good eyes.

I had known Gil since before Mary was born!!

“It’s the oldest story in the world. One day you’re seventeen and planning for someday, and then quietly and without you ever noticing, someday is today, and that someday is yesterday. And this is your life.”

We departed about 5:30 PM and returned Louise to Costa Mesa, and then we went home. Lee joined us for a new home tour, and she sat with us on the patio for a while before returning home.

All Day To Work; Yeah!

Fact: White chocolate isn’t chocolate.  Its name is deceiving because white chocolate doesn’t have any components of regular chocolate.  It’s just a mixture of sugar, milk, vanilla, lecithin, and cocoa butter.

Lost and Found Department, please!  Mary lost her purse, but she did NOT panic.  After an hour of looking for the bag, it turned up on a shelf next to the car.  Mary put it there because we were getting other goodies from the back seat.  Panic over!

Rules we follow!

We had a late breakfast of gruel and grapefruit because  I am heading for 208 pounds today!

Mary worked on her computer and was getting ready for our trip to her 70th reunion (OK, 50th).  Tomorrow Lee, Mary, and I are going to my INFORMAL 60th over in west Los Angeles.

Our avocado is doing well and has a half-dozen babies in the branches.  Another two months, and we will be picking them!

Our tree is doing just fine!

We worked around the house most of the day and jumped in the car at 5:00 PM to go to La Mirada to celebrate our grandsons’ graduation from elementary and middle school.  Charlie (left) enters high school this year, while Alex (left) will terrorize the middle school.

I asked Alex what his funniest experience in school was, and he related what happened in his math class:

Math Teacher: “If I have five bottles in one hand and 6 in the other hand, what do I have?” Student: “A drinking problem.”

Graduation time!

We all celebrated by guzzling champagne; correction, it was sparkling pineapple water.  Joe’s expression tells it all.

Pineapple champagne?

Tony and Dianne watch all the fun; Charlie and Ale can be entertaining.

They were watching the boys!

Yeah!  The cake is ready to be diced.

Time to slice and dice!

Grandpa Paul gets a hug from the boys!  Alex, who, unfortunately, has a personality like his father and grandfather, can’t keep a straight face.

A teacher asks Charlie, “Are you ignorant or just apathetic?” Charlie answers, “I don’t know, and I don’t care.”

My two youngest grandsons!

The Liles’ Clan; a force to be reckoned with!

The Liles Family.

The dreaded “Amy Look”; I cannot catch her by surprise with my camera.  Grandma Villari, Michele, shakes her head.

The Amy Look!

We departed after a fantastic celebration and went right home.  We sat by the fire with a glass of vino before crashing.

The evening was beautiful and the heat perfect.

Good night all!

Girls Night Out Was The Peek Of The Day!

Fact: Most supermarket wasabi is actually horseradish.  Real wasabi is challenging to make and expensive.  As an alternative, most wasabi for sale is colored horseradish with flavorings.

I was going to wake up early to go jogging, but my toes voted against me 10 to 1.

The sun rose, and so did we.  Today is our appointment for the gym and “Girls Night Out.”

Scout, The Wonder Dog, showed me the following picture when I took him out for his morning constitutional.  He has been making airplane sounds ever since I flew the drone yesterday.

Scout saw me fly the drone, and now he wants to fly!

Into the Silver Fox and down the road, we went toward Tustin.  We just missed the school drop-off rush, so we were there a little early.  We were greeted by Mr. Rabbit, who lives on the property.  He was dining on a fire-stick plant, ouch!  We will bring him carrots next week.

Of course, I had to ask Mary, “What do you call a happy rabbit?”  I gave her the answer, “A hop-timist.”

Mary immediately responded with, “Where do rabbits learn how to fly?”.  I was puzzled, so she gave me the answer, “In the hare force.”

The rabbit was awaiting our arrival.

I have to exercise in the morning before my brain figures out what I’m doing.

We peeked inside and decided to go for it.  Saul, our trainer, saw Mary and brought over the fire extinguisher and a bucket of water just in case the machine overheats.

I really don’t think I need buns of steel. I’d be happier with buns of cinnamon.

One-two-three-four, repeat!

We went to Mary’s office in Huntington Beach from the gym to turn in some paperwork and get my glasses fixed.  We had time, so we went from there to the local Home Depot to look for lava rocks and to the Post Office to mail a package to Ethan, Mary’s newest grandson!

Our security camera picked up something moving in the backyard; our pool guy came early.  It is nice having twelve security cameras available; we always know what is happening around the house.

The heater is now gassed up!

We went into the Silver Fox one more time and off to the Sant Ana Elks Lodge for our weekly luncheon.  Today, Mary was surrounded by men; Iris, Linda, and Sydney were not around.

Bill and Bob

We laughed and giggled the entire time.  These luncheon meetings with the staff are vital to our well-being.

Bob and George

We saw a special with seafood and angel hair pasta, so we took it with us and dropped by Jan’s house on the way home.

A quick visit with Jan

It was not a quick visit; we talked for two hours before we came home to watch a little TV and hit the sack.  We had been on the go all day long.

Mid-Week And We Are Busy!!

Fact: Pigs come in all shapes and sizes: from miniature teacup pigs to big ol’ hairy warthogs.  But have you ever seen a Mangalica pig?  These animals – which hail from Hungary – look like the lovechild of a classic potbellied pig and a sheep.  Their hair resembles wool – people dub them “wooly hammoth,” “porcine parka,” or, festively, “pigs in blankets.”

The world is indeed amazing!

We hit the deck running this morning because we had to clean the house before the house cleaners arrived, no, seriously.  Scout still likes his new rugs.  This morning, he had a unique request; he wanted us to get him a Mangalica pig.  Oh my,  that would be something!

The most remarkable thing about my mother is that she served the family nothing but leftovers for thirty years, and the original meal has never been found.

Our front patio had David’s mother’s old bench seat, which Mary had had for years.  I decided it needed a facelift, so I got out the black-enamel spray paint and some red stain and went to work.

Before!

After an hour of back-breaking work, the task was finished.  Laying on the cold hard concrete was challenging work, and my little hands tired all the way to the bone from wielding that colossal paintbrush.  When Mary came out to see my handiwork, all she said was, “you missed a spot.”  Not really; she loved having the old bench brought back to life.

I told my wife she’s been painting her eyebrows on a little too high.  She looked surprised.

Later on, I painted rabbits on my head.  I was hoping they might look like hares from a distance.

It came back to life!!

Mary worked inside, and I continued my mission to make the east side of the house easy to access.  I now have room for all the trash cans without walking around them to get to the backyard.

Tom Heaton came over, he is our handyman, and we gave him a T-shirt which we thought very appropriate.

We know about handypersons!  A businessman went into the office and found an inexperienced handyman painting the walls.  The handyman was wearing two heavy parkas on a hot summer day.  Thinking this was a little strange, the businessman asked the handyman why he was wearing the parkas on such a hot day.  The handyman showed him the instructions on the can of paint.  They read: For best results, put on two coats.

That’s what handymen do!

Mary fixed us a delightful brunch, and we sat on the patio talking about our plans for the rest of the day.  That’s what old people do!

Brunch is served!

We talked for a good half hour!

Mary went to the She-Shed and found two more boxes of goodies to bring in the house and go through; we’re making a lot of progress.  I now believe our son Joe is right, Mary will find Jimmy Hoffa in the She-She eventually.

I moved the lava rock out of the fire pit because we expect Dakota, our Plumber, to show up this afternoon.

We are connecting gas to the firepit.

Well, Dakota leveled the fire ring and connected the gas.  I began putting the lava rock back into the fire pit properly.

As we worked, I asked Dakota, “What do plumbers have when they fall asleep?” He waited, and then I laid it on him!  “Pipe dreams.”

I did the lava rock!

I had to rinse the old lava rock and learned I should always wear gloves.   We needed some additional rock, so I went to Amazon, and it will be delivered tomorrow.  We will see how 120 pounds does before we order more.

I ordered 120 pounds from Amazon to fill up the pit!

We cleaned up and went to Bob and Donna’s home for the bi-monthly Starlighter’s Board meeting.  We are the club’s secretaries, so Mary took notes, and I will type them up tomorrow.

Starlighter’s Board meeting is underway!

Great fun with good friends.

Yeah Yeah, the gang’s all here.

As soon as we got home, we decided to go into the swim spa.  I went outside and fired up the fire pit so that when we got out of the swim spa, we could walk over, sit down and stay nice and warm.

The fire gets started!

As you can see, we did not have enough lava rock to come up to the fire ring, so I ordered 120 pounds from Amazon.  I will have to see how that works.  According to Amazon, it will be at our house on the third, giving me plenty of time to put it in before the weekend.

After the swim spa, this was so nice and warm!

After sitting by the fire, I was officially shot.  I think Mary read for a while, but I rolled over and visited the Sandman.

Just Working Around The House

Fact: That salmon is probably not salmon.  Researchers estimate that about one-third of all fish sold in restaurants and grocery stores is mislabeled—often to deliberately mislead consumers and get them to buy more expensive fish (getting tilapia while paying red snapper prices).  Snapper was found to be mislabeled 87 percent of the time, and tuna was mislabeled 59 percent.  It’s far too common an occurrence to be a fluke.

We have worked all day, well, from 8:00 AM until 2:30 PM, and it was just puttering!  I fixed hoses, moved boxes, moved the patio dining table more into the center of the patio, and watered the front yard.  Mary kept busy in the kitchen and fighting the never-ending battle of dirty clothes.

At 2:30 PM, we stopped and got ready to go to the gym for this afternoon’s exercise.  We did well because we both felt the “pain.” We went to Lowe’s to pick up some throw rugs for Scout;  he does not like the hardwood floors.  We scattered the throw rugs so his path from the front to the back of the house.

What do for our babies!

Scout loves walking on the rugs now!

On the way home, we stopped at Ace’s Bar and Grille and had their small salad topped with a slab of steak!  It was terrific!  We got the jukebox playing real music before we departed.

Returning home, we showed the new rugs to Scout, and he was happy.

We called Robin and did our nightly check-in.  Then we called Lee, made plans for this weekend, and talked to Crazy Greg before crashing.

A Day To Remember

Fact: Memorial Day (originally known as Decoration Day) is a federal holiday in the United States for mourning the U.S. military personnel who have died while serving in the United States armed forces. It is observed on the last Monday of May.

Orphans placing flags at their fathers’ graves in Glenwood Cemetery in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on Decoration Day

Jon, our oldest grandson, called this morning just to talk. Jon was out and about, and in his town, they put up a flag for all the military people they lost through the years. He flew his drone down the walkway with the camera running. It was a little sobering.

We worked in the garden all morning, and I finished the He-Shed cleanup. You can now actually walk inside without fear of an avalanche or having to walk on your tippy toes.

I flew my drone today for the first time without assistance. Before I knew it, the derned things went over at the neighbor’s house a block away, and I had to send it back! It is a load of fun, but I must remember to wear my glasses.

The He-Shed is looking good these days! I did toss out several duplicated garden tools and found things I had lost for years.

I can get inside and walk around now!

The shed is convenient to the backyard, so I had put tools inside that I often need to work in the yard. We have some flowers in the planters, and they look lovely. I thought to myself, “Pollen is what happens when flowers can’t keep it in their plants.”

The He-Shed is looking good!

We had brunch of my favorite, gruel! Sitting on the patio looking out over the south forty is very enjoyable.

We got cleaned up and headed for Studio-M. The studio put on a dance for Mary’s birthday and Capp’s 56th anniversary. Mary brought her favorite wine glass with her to the dance! The first thing on my bucket list is to fill the bucket with wine.

What’s the secret to enjoying a good bottle of wine? Open the bottle to let it breathe. If it doesn’t look like it’s breathing, give it mouth-to-mouth.

The birthday girl gets to dance!

The dance started at 2:00 PM and ended at 5:00 PM. We had a good-sized group today.

Our group is quite friendly.

The dance floor is perfect for our group, and the mirrors on the wall make the studio look even more prominent.

The music is connected to the internet so we can request anything and it is played.

Marcin threw in the Hokey-Pokey because he knew everyone would get up and dance. I was addicted to the hokey pokey, but thankfully, I turned myself around.

We dance for three hours.

We have so much fun together that it should be illegal! My wife and I always compromise. I admit I’m wrong, and she agrees with me.

Just us!

We laugh a lot. If laughter is the best medicine, we will be healthy for many years!

Just us!

Mary better celebrate; only two more days of her birthday month remain.

Yes indeed!

Suddenly, the room warmed up; I thought Marcin had turned on the heater. Well, it was the birthday cake. The candles raised the temperature by five degrees!

One candle for every 5.38 years.

At 5:00 PM, we jumped in the car the went VFR to the Orange Circle, where Renata is located. The restaurant is excellent and had Mary’s favorite Veal Piccata. I ordered the Sinatra Pasta, which Bob Z suggested!

We arrived at 5:30 PM, right on time.

We made arrangements for two tables of six, and they put them together, so we were all together,

We had quite a group today.

The conversations must have been funny because there was a load of laughs. I overheard someone say, “If a parsley farmer gets sued, can they garnish his wages?”

Hello ladies!

We took home meatballs and angel hair pasta and dropped them off at Jan’s house. We visited for a while and then went home and crashed.

Sunday; A Day To Rest And Relax Get Busy!

Fact: The Czech, Polish, Slovenian, Croatian, Serbian, Ukrainian, and Belarusian words for Sunday can be translated as “without acts (no work).”

Our eyes began to focus at 5:30 AM, and it was, therefore, time for the Swim Spa.  Bark, the Wonder Dog, is already outside, clearing the area and making sure no prowlers are in the yard.  We had our coffee and talked while the ‘ol bones got loosened up!  Mary almost became an osteopath.  She said she could feel it in her bones.

The morning coffee is required to get my heart started!

After a good soak, we got dressed and took Precious for a run down to Banning to visit Annie.  Banning is exactly 60 miles or one hour from our home, and we use the Fast-Pass to do down the 91.  Then we take the 60 and finally on to the 10 for a few files.

Did You Know?  Banning is a city in Riverside County, California, United States, and the population was 35,603 at the 2020 census.  It is situated in the San Gorgonio Pass, also known as Banning Pass.  It is named for Phineas Banning, stagecoach line owner and the “Father of the Port of Los Angeles.”

Banning shares geographic and regional features with its western neighbor, the city of Beaumont.  Banning and Beaumont have been rapidly growing in size and population since the 1990s.  Both cities are about 80 miles east of downtown Los Angeles and 30 miles west of Palm Springs, each connected by freeway and railroad.

We decided to bring them (and us) a healthy lunch, so we stopped by Wienerschnitzel for chili-cheese gods and sauerkraut-dog for Annie.  Wienerschnitzel is an American fast-food chain founded in 1961 specializing in hot dogs.  Despite the name, the company does not sell Wiener schnitzel, only selling it once as a promotional item.

Of course, I asked Mary, “What do you call a hot dog race?  Wiener takes all.”

Read about der Wienerschnitzel on Wikipedia; it has an interesting history!

She was not doing that well, so we did not stay too long.  Annie stayed in bed while we were there, but her son later reported that Annie ate the whole hotdog, making us happy.

They are looking pretty good for being in their mid-90s.

We worked in the yard most of the afternoon with Mary going some weeding, and I mainly repaired hoses and placed them on the three new faucets done in the south forty.  I arranged some of the bricks to outline where we wanted the planters placed.  The larger is going to be a beauty.

We gonn have a vegetable farm by July 4th!!

The doorbell rang, and a delivery person left a big heavy box!  What could it be; it was too big for my order of toothpicks!  I peeked inside, and it was the outside commercial stainless steel sink that we will put adjacent to the garden.  Now we can wash the crops as we pick them and not drag dirt into the house.  We will have cold water, and the “dirty” water will drain back into the garden, so it is not wasted!

It required some assembly; it sounds like a job for Super Joe

By 6:00 PM, we were well done and began cleaning up.  Mary fixed a delicious Veal Piccata dinner with fresh striking beans from the harden.  String beans can only be picked by a professional string bean taster and they are difficult to find.  I, being the luckiest guy on Earth, happened to be married to a professional green bean taster!

Tasting green beans mean you need to be in proper gardening attire which means grubbies and a bean tasting hat!

We attempted to watch a movie, but to no avail; we were pooped!  We saved some work for tomorrow, so we are not worried.

A Wee Bit Of Scotch Please!

Facts:

  1. Scotland is home to the tallest waterfall in Britain, named Eas a’ Chual Aluinn.  It is 658 feet, which is three times the height of Niagara Falls.
  2. The official animal of Scotland is the Unicorn.
  3. Scotland has approximately 790 islands.
  4. Scotland is home to the oldest tree in Europe.  It is a twisted yew, and it has been around for 3,000 years.
  5. Edinburgh was the first city in the world to have its own fire brigade.
  6. There are over 600 square miles of freshwater lakes.
  7. The highest proportion of redheads are in Scotland.
  8. St. Andrew’s Links is known as the “home of golf.”
  9. Even though Edinburgh is the capital, it is not the largest city; Glasgow is the largest.
  10. The raincoat was invented in Scotland by a man named Charles Macintosh, who was born in Glasgow.

The alarm went off at 5:00 AM; we think Scout set it to get back at us for leaving him alone last night!  Morning is terrific, and its only drawback is that it comes at such an inconvenient time of day.

I wake up every morning at six and grab the morning paper.  Then I look at the obituary, and if my name is not on it, I get up.

OMG, 5:00  AM on a Saturday??

We headed to the Swim Spa at 6:00 AM, bringing our coffee with us, and we sat in the mist and watched the birds fly over, scouting the hood to decide where they wanted to land.

Robin, Bob, and Nick joined us at 9:30 AM, and we drove to the OC Fairgrounds to attend the Scottish Festival.  Scottish Fest, held at the OC Fair & Event Center, is the oldest and longest-running event of its kind in Southern California.  The two-day festival is put on each Memorial Day weekend by the United Scottish Society to celebrate the Scottish heritage and tradition.  It dates back to 1932 as a small gathering called the Highland Games but has grown to cover nearly all 150 acres of the OC Fair & Event Center in Costa Mesa.

The music was, ah, interesting!

Mary was curious about the kilt.  I always attempt to enlighten Dr. Mary using my years of adulthood and my obvious seniority.

Get ready!  So, Mary asked me, how many birds can you fit under a Scotsman’s kilt?  In a delicate tone of voice, I replied, “Depends how big the perch is!”.

Mary would not let me buy her an official “Kilt Inspector T-Shirt.”

We stopped and enjoyed the sheep herding demonstration.  Scout would have gone nuts as he has the instincts to be a herder!  He often will “guide” us to where he wants to go by rubbing up against us as we walk!

We watched with great interest.

The top dog was “Tweed,” and he was terrific.  He circled those sheep, and they did not move!  He was in total control!  A herding dog, also known as a stock dog, shepherd dog, sheepdog, or working dog, is a type of dog that has been trained in herding or belongs to breeds developed for herding.

They work hard.

It was fun to watch the demo and more fun to watch Dr. Mary watch the demo!

Scout is in trouble when we get home.

We may have to buy three or four sheep for Scout to boss around!

The demonstration was fantastic!

We walked all around the grounds and even stopped to see the hammer throw and girls tossing 50-pound rocks thirty feet!  Mary got a new ring that looks like “The King Of Frogs,” and Robin and Bob got a new coat of arms.

When the bagpipes play, Mary moves!

The bagpipes got to her.

We could have stayed all day, but my leg said, “Time to go home!”.  But first, we needed authentic Scottish food, so we stopped at the Baja Blue restaurant and had hamburgers and Mexican food!

I suggested having haggis but was outvoted 4:1.

Did You Know?  Haggis (Scottish Gaelic: taigeis) is a savory pudding containing sheep’s pluck (heart, liver, and lungs), minced with onion, oatmeal, suet, spices, and salt, mixed with stock, and cooked while traditionally encased in the animal’s stomach though now an artificial casing is often used instead.  According to the 2001 English edition of the Larousse Gastronomique: “Although its description is not immediately appealing, haggis has an excellent nutty texture and delicious savory flavor.”

Yummy!!

The wine area of the fair was converted to a whiskey tasting area; it was too early for me to try them!

Activities we planned for the entire day!

There was no “Liles” in the family names, probably because I was Irish.  No Côté’s either; the French, you know!

Coat of arms for Duda & Berry

OMG, the bagpipes also got to Robin!

Bagpipes gone wild!  The dancing must be catching!

We had to see the British cars exhibit.  They looked so small compared to what we were driving during those years.

Old tiny cars!

She got me!  I was really here!  We have no pictures of Bob and Nick; what happened!

Would you buy a used car from this guy?

Walking back, we spotted two Scotties, and they were all dressed up!

The Scottish Terrier (Scottish Gaelic: Abhag Albannach; also known as the Aberdeen Terrier), popularly called the Scottie, is a dog breed.

We returned home at about 3:00 PM, and we took a short one-hour nap before going to Jan’s for a glass of wine.  On the way, we stopped at David and Dianne’s to drop off some strawberries and flowers.

Returning home, we CRASHED hard!  We were in bed watching TV by 8:00 PM.

The Week Is Done; Thirty Weeks Until Christmas! Water Pipe Run To Garden!

Fact: The closest state in the United States to Africa is Maine, which juts out further east into the Atlantic than most people realize.

It was 2:00 AM, and I woke up out of a dead sleep saying to myself, “Self, you failed to take out the trash!” We had too much fun last night, and I just forgot.  So, I took off my nightie (which consists of a pair of warm socks), put on my robe and shoes, and trotted outside in the pouring rain, sleet, and hail to do my husbandly duty.

OK, all is well until I slipped coming back in.  OMG, I looked at my arm, and it was covered in blood, mine!  I tripped, and my arm scraped the wall ripping off the skin.  I could have made a pup tent for a squirrel with all my lost skin.

I did NOT attempt to awake the doctor in the house, so I managed to stop the bleeding using a tourniquet around my neck.  Finally, the arm stopped bleeding, and I returned to my now-cold bed.  Poof; not a way to start Friday!!

Note: We had to change the sheets because I kept bleeding after going to sleep!

At 9:00 AM, Carlos and the crew showed up; they are adding more water outlets in the backyard, plus are readying the watering system to handle the new veggie garden that is coming perhaps as early as next week!

If that were not bad enough, I sat down for breakfast and got the evil eye from Scout!

A vegetable garden means water is needed.  Carlos did the original watering system for this entire house, so he knows!  We brought two water lines into the south-forty; one feeds four additional spigots plus the outdoor washbasin.  The other provides the entire garden, which will be on a drip system.

Talking about gardens, “If you have five cabbages in one hand and six cauliflowers in the other hand, what do you have?”  Thinking about the answer?  “Big hands!”

I sent this picture to Joe!  I told him I did it myself, and he called back in less than three minutes!

The blocks are laid out to represent the beds of the new garden.

They were looking for parts!

The old garden in Los Alamitos has served us well since 2014; it was my 70th birthday present to myself.  These beds were three feet wide by twenty feet long.  The new garden will be roughly the same, but an additional bed will be six feet wide to accommodate corn and melons.

The beds were tall enough to sit on and do the gardening activities.

I will have water, electricity, and a drip system in each bed.

Bullet nose brick made it comfortable sitting.

While Carlos and the team worked, I puttered doing some “honey-do’s.  The birdies seem to like our gate and told us so by leaving little deposits.  Thanks to Amazon, they will not be sitting on this fence anymore!

Bye-bye birdies!

At 3:30 PM, we got cleaned up and went to Patty’s Place in Seal Beach to have dinner with Bill and Mary Capps, long-time dancing friends.  They are celebrating their anniversary, and we celebrated with them.  The staff was happy to see us (that’s where we got married almost a year ago!)

The gang is here!  They are saying hello to Chuck!

We had our favorite booth by the giant fish tank.  I overachieved and had the 16oz bone-in ribeye.  Mary did the filet mignon but a small portion.  Mary and Bill are watching their diet (and our) this evening; they split a nice big steak!

I overheard Mary telling Mary, “Husbands are the best people to share a secret with because they never listen anyway.”  She also said, “Happy anniversary to my husband, who still looks at me the way he looks at other women.”

We are enjoying great company!

I decided to age the photo using one of the photo post-processing apps.  The picture would have looked like if it had been taken fifty years ago!

We aged the picture!

After heading home, we just crashed.  It has been a busy day.

BDD (BirthDay Day)

Fact: In China, a newborn is considered age 1.  Thus, a one-year-old in the West and most other parts of the world would be aged two years in China.

Today many, many, many, many, many, moons ago, Mary came to us!  Sometimes I see it in my mind.  How scary it must have been to be born in a cave with the sound of dinosaurs ravaging the forest for food just a few yards away!  Mary was brave.

Remember when!

I asked Mary if she felt old.  She said, “Sometimes!  When I went to the antique auction last week,  three people bid on me!”

The first order of business was to go to the gym and do our hour workout so we can stay healthy.  When Mary got out of the car, I thought she had dropped a cereal box, but it was just the newly developed (since midnight) “snap, crackle, and pop” sounds of the old bones.

I assisted her to the door and guided her to the first exercise machine.  She did well as everything began to loosen up from that point forward.  By the end of the session and the eight exercise machines later, Mary was so loose that things were starting to fall off!  Needless to say, I assisted her to the car and helped her get inside.  (I am going to pay for this!)

Returning home, we fed Scout the wonder dog.  He has a message for mommy!

We refreshed ourselves and took off at 11:00 AM for the bank and the Santa Ana Elks!  We had a good-sized group today, and Ronnie dropped by and learned about the birthday.  Ronnie belted our seventeen choruses of The Happy Birthday Song, and he was still singing when we departed an hour later.

Ronnie came to serenade Miss Mary!

We all had a great time.  Girls Night Out has been going on now for two years, and we seldom miss going to visit our friends.

Oh oh!

Bob assisted me in keeping Mary giggling!  He was quite a gentleman and found Mary a tall glass for her false teeth.  It was a little odd because those teeth kept staring at me while she gummer her soft food.

Bob and Mary and me; Mary was surrounded!

Ronnie told us a story and gave Mary a bouquet; he is a good friend!

A story shall be told!

Back home, we re-freshened up, and Mary put on her new birthday dress.  We walked the yard examining the veggies and making a mental list of what we have to do this weekend.  Now that Mary is up in years, I plan to provide her with a walking stick.  Oh, not to walk but to bop me over the head should I misbehave!

We walked the backyard before going to D&D’s

At 5:15 PM, we took off to see David and Dianne.  Dianne cooked up Mary’s favorite meal, Veal Piccata.  It was delightful!  Our hosts provided us with generous portions of our favorite wine, Two Buck Chuck!  We talked and giggled and solved the world’s problems again!

Veal Picatta, anyone!

Now that Mary is a little older, I cut up her dessert into bite-sized portions.  Strawberry shortcake. Yummy!!

Confucius say… wise man makes sure that his wife’s birthday cake is short one candle.

Duh!!

Our chef did a magnificent job.  I told her, “I’m no cook; when I want lemon on chicken, I spray it with Pledge.”

Dianne, our hostess and gourmet chef, had a good time!

It was time to go home after a lovely meal and a lot of banter back and forth!

David and Mary!

I assisted Mary down the stairs and into the car.  After three glasses of wine, I did not hear the now-normal “snap, crackle and pop” as she entered the car.

BD-1

Fact:  The most common birth date in the United States, excluding leap years, is 22 May.

Dang, another dash to Los Alamitos in the morning fog!  Doctors to the left of me; doctors to the right of me; we are invested with doctors.  Oops!  Mary is a doctor; I recant my wild statement!

We were “up” at 5:00 AM and ready to go at 6:45 AM so we could make our first appointment at 7:30 AM with my dermatologist.  Another biopsy, another day!  Soon, I will have nothing left to biopsy!

I know this parking lot well!

One down, one to go.  We had 90 minutes to kill, so we headed to Hof’s Hut for breakfast.  This restaurant is sometimes called “The Capps Bar & Grill” it is a long story!

I said to the waitress, “Those who believe in telekinesis, raise my hand!”

An omelet and a latte; life is good!  I did two eggs and a hamburger patty!  Also GOOD!

Whilst we were dining, a text flew in from Colleen.  She and her hubby climbed a 6,000′ mountain on their vacation.  They can almost see forever!

I think they said it was Mount Killamanjaro!

We returned to the medical center and got the heart doctor’s news.  I have a blockage, and the doctor wants an angiogram performed in the next month or so.  I plan to do it myself and get the training from YouTube.  Until then, I am supposed to take a nap every afternoon and be hand-fed a diet of chocolate bonbons.

After getting home, we checked our power box as Tom, our handyman, did the final paint job.  It is now ready for inspection.

Looks good!!

The rest of the day, Mary worked doing chores, and I cleaned up the garage, emphasizing the workbench!

At 4:00 PM, we departed for Downtown Disney so we could meet Robin and Bob to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary!

I remember it well; I had the father-daughter dance with Robin!

We got there early, which allowed us to visit Santiago, the head bartender and good friend!

Robin, Bob, and Nick joined us at about 5:30 PM, and we got a great table in the back of the restaurant, where it was pretty quiet.

Mary got a president!

“The pose” is mandatory for all such occasions!

Smile, you’re on TV

We had a boggle of champagne that the kids brought from home.  We toasted, giggled, and toasted and giggled again!

We got our picture taken “professionally.”

Then came the flaming dessert!  We broke our planned diet, but once a day is OK, right?

So much fun!

We stayed quite a while, savoring the moments.

It was a fantastic evening!

We headed home around 9:00 PM and crashed.  Today we have been on the go!

Get ‘Er Done Day!

Fact: Fred Bauer, the Procter & Gamble employee who devised the idea of stacking Pringles into cans, eschewed an urn upon his death and instead asked that his family bury him in one of his signature cans.

We were busy today just doing stuff that needed to be done.  We did celebrate a milestone of sorts, Mary completed another 500-piece puzzle without the use of Exacto-knives and glue!

Now we transition to 300-piece puzzles!

Our friendly neighborhood plumber came by and serviced the tankless water heater.   Wr love the tankless and this plumber Dakota, was the one who made our kitchen sink instantly hot.  Now it takes 2-3 seconds and the water is at 130 degrees!

Looks like a lot of wiring for a water heater!

While he was here, the water softener guy passed by and dropped in two one-hundred pound bags of salt into the water softener.

While Dakota was here, I asked if he could run a gas line from the pool heater line to the fire pit.  We decided he would put a QD (quick-disconnect) on the pool heater wall and I would use by 24′ gas hose to connect to the firepit.  By doing that approach, I avoided digging up twenty feet of brick and I can also convert the BBQ to natural gas and hook it up to the flexible hose!

My next chore is to pressure wash the lava rocks.

I needed a new fire ring so Amazon to the rescue!  This ring will handle the 250,000 BTU energy source and shoot flames into the air to make sure we stay warm!  Once the ring arrives, I will clean the lava rocks and bury them in the gravel/sand and cover them with the lava rocks.  It should be pretty nice looking.

Skyflame 36-Inch Round Fire Pit Burner Ring

After the plumber departed, I went back to the garage and continued on the workbench. It is possible to work on it now!  To test it out, I installed a Google-Nest doorbell and it was easy!  I could find all the tools.

I found another drill, a grinder, and a power stapler that I had not even opened!

In the afternoon we went to the gym and spent an hour doing our workouts.  After the gym, we went by  CVS and picked up some goodies and then to Ralph’s market.  We had to get sushi for Jan, it is one of her favorites!

We had a very small dinner and then crashed watching TV for a while.

Monday Was Re-Planned!

Fact: Most elephants weigh less than the tongue of a blue whale!

Scout and I went for a short walk, and we met a neighbor.  I had to explain Scouts’ desire only to chase breadsticks!

Scout is very discriminating.

We had to get ready to exit Casa Valencia early as we needed to be in Los Alamitos at 11:00 AM to meet with Dr. Rucker, my generalist.  He read the results from the blood test, and it was perfect for an older man.  My cholesterol was 56!  Everything else was pretty nominal.

We planned to go to lunch with Robin, but she stayed home today.  On the way out, Dr. Vannatta called and canceled; we will see him Wednesday.  We were supposed to see Dr. Vannatta at 2:30 PM so he could read the Nuclear Stress Test results.

So, we stopped by Staples, got an ink cartridge for the 8600, and then steered home from 22 to 55.  I watered the new trees in the front yard, and Mary headed to the kitchen to make brunch.  She worked on the salads for quite a while; now we know why!

Brunch time, and Mary gets creative.

Everything in the salad was from our garden.  Brunch without booze is just a sad, late breakfast.

What is the chef’s favorite music to play in the kitchen?  Wok n’ roll.

I love Mary’s creativity!

Our lack of a formal veggie garden this year did not stop us from planting veggies in the flower beds.  The one behind Mary is enormous, and it has hundreds of blossoms on it.

Our tomatoes have gone nuts!

We are not kidding; they are taller than Mary, so we will need a step ladder when they get ripe.

Vanna White, eat your heart out!

They are taller than her!

Mary took me to the cucumbers, and they were going great.  Some of them were in our brunch today, and we have to pick them every other day to keep the plant producing.

We get cucumbers every day!

We worked around the house for a while, and then Mary decided beans needed to be made.  This is her famous eighteen-bean concoction, and I worked with her and chopped the ingredients up.

Time for beans.

We watched the Jesse Stone movie from last night again as we both missed some parts.  Then we watched a new one called “Lost In Paradise.”  Jesse’s investigation into the Boston Ripper gets complicated in “Jesse Stone: Lost in Paradise”

We then decided to make Egg Bites, a recipe from Allreceipes.com, and it looks like the ones served in Starbucks.  We made two dozen of them, and we polished off four before going to bed.  We were not worried since they are only 100 calories in each one.

Last week, we went to a new restaurant, and it was named ‘Out of This World?’ Because it specializes in Unidentified Frying Objects.

Egg Bites in process.

Then we watched the last of the Jessee Stone series entitled Lost In Paradise.  With things running smoothly in Paradise, Police Chief Stone (Tom Selleck) agrees to serve as a consultant on an unsolved murder case in Boston.  Local police suspect “The Boston Ripper,” a killer who is already behind bars, but Stone believes the murderer is a bit closer to home – setting him off on an investigation filled with surprises and grave danger.

We crashed at 10:30 PM.  Good night all.

Sunday, TIme For A Visit!

Fact: It is a common myth that dogs can only see in black and white.  They only have two cones in their eyes to detect colors, whereas humans have three.  That means dogs see colors on a blue and yellow scale but cannot distinguish between red and green.  On the other hand, they have better night vision than humans.  Their eyes take in information 25% faster than us, making them incredibly talented at catching a ball or frisbee.

Scout, The Wonder Dog, got up and waned outside.  After watching him for a while, I decided we needed a father-son talk about his hairdo!

We have to do something about his hair!

Soon after that, Mary came into the kitchen, and we enjoyed a cup of coffee.  Yesterday was gardening day, but the sky was overcast, so I did not take pictures.  Today, we strolled around the pool with the camera in hand, looking at our handiwork.

The newest in our collection, the hibiscus, was looking winsome.

The flowers are lovely this time of year!

One of many flower beds surrounding the pool looked quite neat with its combination of flowers and vegetables!

The results of our gardening activities Saturday were satisfactory.

The flowers were brilliant in the morning sun.  We found six more coming up in the backyard.  Next year we will have to try other colors.

I don’t buy flowers from monks. I like to do my bit to prevent florist friars.

We have more growing in the yard!

Most of our flower boxes were converted to edible veggies.  The two carrot boxes were well mixed with sand, and we are getting plenty of carrots for our salads.

Cooking carrots are better for you than eating raw carrots.  As the most popular and widely grown member of the Apiaceae family, you want to respect the vegetable.  You should get the most out of each bite by cooking them.  Cooking releases the hidden pockets of good-for-you beta-carotene.  In fact, eating carrots raw only gives you three percent of this substance, but when you heat them up, they release closer to 40 percent.  So try these sweet vegetables puréed into soup, sliced thin onto a salad, braised in butter, baked, cooked until they are soft in a stew, and stuffed into poultry.

The boxes are loaded with carrots.

The tree below was a story.  I was given this when my dear mother passed away in 1990.  It was about nine inches tall, and I have kept it all these years.  With Mary’s assistance, we have made the plant grow broader and taller.

This tree is over thirty years old!

The walk around our backyard takes a while because we “talk” to the plants.  Mary whispers to them so the neighbors will not hear.

I did ask Mary, “What do you call a garden that is chicken-proof?”  Duh, “Impeccable.”

We love our yard.

We got ready to go to Roger’s Gardens by noon as we wanted to do some shopping, and we were having lunch with Becky and Dan, Mary’s daughter.  We took Jamboree from our place to Roger’s as it is a straight shot, and we avoided the freeways.

That reminded me of the other day I had to go to the doctor’s office.  Mary heard a traffic report on the radio and called me, who’s is already halfway there, or so I thought.  She said, “Be careful, dear; I heard on the radio that some idiot is driving the wrong way on the freeway.” I replied, “There isn’t one guy driving the wrong way; they all are!”

The first stop was the orchid room, as we were after African Violets.  While most indoor plants flourish for only two to five years, the African violet flower has serious staying power.  With the proper care, they can live up to 50 years!  The key is to avoid over-watering, chilly temperatures, and direct sunlight.

A visit to the orchid room at Roger’s Gardens

We bought two of these little guys to take to Annie next time we travel to Banning.

We have two babies to give to Annie.

We went to The Farmhouse for lunch.  We arrived a little early, so we had a glass of wine and examined the menu!

It was a perfect day to enjoy the meal and company!

They had specials today, and Mary did the egg dish that neither of us could pronounce, much less spell.   It looked sensational.

Yummy!

I opted for the enchilada, and it was fantastic.  It did NOT look like the enchiladas we get at the local Mexican restaurants; this one was fried and stuffed with chicken and covered with micro-greens.

Enchilada’s like I have never seen!

We had some things for Becky, so we drove them to their home about one and a half miles away.  It was an excellent visit, and we made plans to do it again!

Hello girls!

Becky and Dan go there quite often and they named a drink after Becky!

It might ne called “Becky’s Hair”

Returning home, I laid down for a twenty-minute nap, and after an hour, Mary decided to go to Jan’s alone.  I slept for two hours solid, which means I will not sleep well tonight.

We watched two Jesse Stone movies and finally went to sleep at 1:00 AM.  The first movie was “No Remorse.”  Police Chief Jesse Stone, having been suspended by the Paradise, Mass.  Town Council begins moonlighting for his friend, State Homicide Commander Healy, by investigating a series of murders in Boston, leaving Rose and Suitcase to handle a crime spree in Paradise on their own.  Convinced the Boston murders have a connection to the notorious crime boss, Gino Fish, Jesse pours his energy into his work in an effort to push away the professional and personal insecurities he’s avoiding at home in Paradise.

We then watched “Innocents Lost.”   Jesse tries to prove the innocents of a man he feels is wrongly accused of murder while also obsessing over the death of a young girl in town.

The lights finally went out at 1:06 AM.

Work And Play Is Really OK!

Fact: Anatidaephobia (ant-uh-tid-uh-fo-bee-uh)  is the fear of being watched by a duck.  A person with Anatidaephobia fears that a duck or a goose is watching him/her somewhere in the world.

We opened our eyes and looked toward the sky through the bedroom windows; the day was cold, just what we needed to work in the garden.

Scout was complaining about his color, but he had a positive attitude!

The Postman does not have a chance now!

Out of our jammies and into grubbies, we shot out the front door with Mary dead-heading the roses and me cleaning up the garage and working in the drip system.

Tom came over and started the patch job on the new electrical box.

The job will be done by Tuesday, and then I can call for the final inspection!

We asked Tom to investigate a nest on the patio, and he found eggs.  We were careful not to touch them, and we decided to keep them for a while.

We did not toss the nest but put it back carefully.

We worked from 8:00 AM until 12:30 PM in the garden.  Mary went harvesting and found the following goodies.  That is pretty amazing for NOT having a real garden; these came from some pots and our flower beds!

Our harvest!

We took a two-hour nap before getting ready to dance this evening with the Starlighters at the Fullerton Elks  Lodge.  The theme was Tuxedos and Tiaras.  It was indeed a bevy of beauties this evening.

Starlighter’s Tux & Tiara’s Dance

We visited Bill and Holly, and it was pointed out that Bill and I have identical tuxedos; no, Holly and Mary had the same dresses on, with the color being the variable.

Lookalikes; Mary & Holly.

We danced until 10:30 PM and then headed home to crash.  We have another full day tomorrow.
