Girls Night Out Occurred Without Incident!

We were up and raring to go to the Elks for “Girls Night Out”.  All was well with everyone.  Mary had a cup of soup, and I went for the “Doc’s Burger,” which is good but way too big for me anymore.

We came home and crashed, and while Mary was sawing logs, I used my hypodermic needle to force Gorilla Glue into the linen closet door to make sure it stayed in place.  The kit is convenient for repairing things around the house.

10ml Glue Applicator Syringe with 14G, 16G, 18G Blunt Tip Needle and Cap, Suitable for Ink, Epoxy, Woodworking, Craft, Liquid Dispensing

We are going to return to the Elks tonight and partake in the line dancing class!  Since it is going to be cold, I decided I needed a T-shirt in addition to my cowboy duds.  Guess which T-shirt I selected?  It came from New Hampshire.

Oh Boy!  I will not need the iPhone tonight!

Dianne joined us, and she was out on the floor instantly.  When she returned to the table, we could smell the burnt leather from her shoes.

You go, girl!

Dianne is amazing, she can dance and smile at the same time!  Me, I told my feet to follow the music, but they decided to freestyle and started a whole new genre!

“Oh Dear!!”

Meanwhile, back at the ranch!  We attempted to get on the floor, but alas, there was no room.  We just had to sit and watch!  When Dianne would come in for a breather, we would carefully pour a little ice water on her boots, then jump back as the steam began to rise.  Then, we would pull out the oxygen mask!

We were dressed for the occasion.  I was wearing my duster, western shirt, and boots tonight.

The term “duster” for the long, lightweight Western coat derives from its primary function: to “dust” off the wearer.  The coat was initially designed to protect horseback riders’ clothing from dust, dirt, and debris while riding across open, dusty terrain, especially during Elks Lodge line-dancing nights in the American West.

“Where did I park my hoss?”

Bill showed up in what he thought was western garb.  Bill looked like a city slicker this evening, but we refrained from giggling and pointing.  He was quite a dandy!  The term “dandy” was used to describe someone overly concerned with appearance and fashion, often wearing elaborate or expensive clothing.

After he was sufficiently embarrassed by yours truly, we went on with the evening.

Sandee planned to take these evening napkins to Lululemon and get Bill some western duds in those colors.  (We can hardly wait!!)

Bill will look charming, delectable, delicious, enchanting, heavenly, and luscious in these colors!!

We departed a little early because the smell of burnt leather and the continuous slapping of thighs and fannies was too exciting for Paul.  In addition, picturing Bill in his new pink-and-purple cowboy duds made us giggle, which made it hard to drink our wine!

Hump Day Has Arrived!

We went to the gun at 8:15 am.  We went to do battle and win, but alas, we both schlepped out of the building totally drained, feet dragging, and body parts rearranged into an almost unrecognizable form.

We had to go home after the workout to clean the house because Domilita was due in at 3:00 pm with her staff.

We did chores around the house all afternoon.  Mary kept finding Christmas decorations we missed, so I set up a box called “Christmas Miscellaneous.” At the end of the day, it was almost full.

Santa came today, and I got more presidents from Amazon, including a replacement recoil hose fr the air compressor, two new 36″ bar-clamps, and a replacement burner assembly for the hot-tub outdoor standup heater.

First came the recoil hose, which I use all the time in the shop.  The last one decided to break at the connector in the middle of the night, causing the compressor to run all night long, burning up the starter capacitor.  Joe took the unit and attempted a repair; four days later, it looked brand-new because it was brand-new.  Joe, the little stinker, bought me a new unit.  HE ordered parts for the old one, which he plans to use.

Description: SANFU (PU) Polyurethane Recoil Air Hose 3/8”ID(8.2x 12mm) x 25ft, Flexible, Professional 145PSI With Reassembled Brass Quick Coupler and Plug, Grey(25′)

My old hose finally broke, sending compressed air all over the garage.

We noticed that one of the linen cabinet doors was sagging slightly and, under close examination, a 1/8-inch split was forming along the side.  Formulating a repair plan was easy, but the necessary tool was NOT in my shop.  So, I hit the keys, logged on to Amazon, and procured a bar clamp big enough to handle the job.

Description: VEVOR Bar Clamps for Woodworking, 2-Pack 30 inch Parallel Clamp Set, F-Clamp with 1500 lbs Load Limit, Even Pressure, High-strength Plastic and Carbon Steel, for Woodworking Metal Working, Orange

It can apply 800 psi of pressure.

For the past year, we have been battling the vertical heater adjacent to the swim spa.  It was old (like me) and often refused to light up because the gas control assembly had bit the bullet.  On two occasions, the entire heater was rolled into the shop, disassembled, and fiddled with until it worked.  The fiddling lasted about 30 days, then died again!  OFF WITH ITS HEAD!!

Description: Patio Heaters Glass Tube Burner Module Replacement 47,000 BTU SGT Pattern Burner Replacement Parts with Regulator Valve Assembly Kit for Pyramid Square Glass Tube Patio Heater

I will replace the entire unit rather than attempt to fix the cantankerous device.

We got the house prepared by 4:00 pm when she finally arrived.  Just before Domi showed up, we decided to do the heavy pruning of our rose garden.  I went outside to collect the necessary tools, including a power-assist trimmer, a wheelbarrow, and rose gloves.  By the time they were ready and placed by the roses, it was decided it was too darned cold.  The Sun was setting, and cold arctic blasts were being felt—time to go back inside.

Then, out of the dark grey afternoon cold, I had a vision!  It was my magnificent wife and I sitting in an Italian restaurant dining on Veal Picata and Angel Hair Pasta with Hot Sauce while sucking down savoring a bottle of fine wine (sucking down was correct, but it did not sound good).

We combed out our hair and headed for the car.  Domi and the gang came in the front door, and we escaped via the garage.  We went to Renata’s near the Orange Traffic Circle.

I asked to dine “al fresco” because I thought that meant naked, but alas, my Italian is pretty poor.  We sat in the enclosed patio, which was sealed with heavy, weatherproof plastic curtains.  My idea of al fresco wouldn’t have worked this evening; it was colder than a well-digger’s bottom!

We dined semi-al fresco!

As usual, dinner was heavenly because I sat across from an angel.  The owner was serving this evening and brought bruschetta on the house!  Our wine was on the table the minute we sat down, and Mary did not have to order; the order was on automatic.  I went off the reservation and had angel hair pasta with meatballs and requested their VERY SPICY marinara sauce.

During dinner, we got a text from Charlotte: “We had a blast last night!  Haven’t seen Wayne have this much fun since he got sick.  It made my heart happy!  And we owe it all to you!!!  Thanks for thinking of us, entertaining us!  And hosting such a marvelous evening!  Best therapy ever!!!  Thank YOU ? ??”

We enjoyed seeing Charlotte so happy!  It keeps with our theme of “Do unto others as you want to be done upon!”

After dinner, we went down the street four stores and visited the Orange Elks Lodge.  We had a glass of vino, visited with fellow Elks, and headed home.  It was meeting night, and the place was jumping.

Returning home, it was “Book Night”.  We decided that two nights a week, we would turn off the TV, cuddle up in the TV/Reading Room, and use our brains to paint images instead of letting the TV control our thoughts.    I finished my Clive Cussler book, and Mary almost finished hers.  We both fell asleep sometime during the reading extravaganza and woke up around 11:00 pm; time to go to bed!

Twosday Has Arrived And We Are Off And Running

OMG!!!  It is 5:45 am, and Alexa woke us up with two men screaming, “Hey, Wake Up!” and “Get Out of Bed!” at the top of their collective lungs!  It was not an accident; we had to be up so we could make it to the dentist’s office in Irvine at 8:00 am.

Mary popped out of bed and went to the nice warm bathroom (courtesy of her wonderful husband, me)!  On the other hand, I trudged through the rain, sleet, and snow (occurring in the hallway) to get to the kitchen, where the electric heart starter was located.

Yes, there on the counter was Mr. Kerig and two K-Cups of heart-starting elixir.  Quick like a bunny, I placed the K-cups into the machine and punched the “make me a cup” button.  After some time, as the machine growled and sputtered, out came the morning starter.

Since we will not have time for breakfast, I whipped up a blueberry bagel by splitting it, toasting it, and adding Irish butter on the top.

I pranced back down the hallway (where the snow and rainstorm seemed to subsided) and delivered the goodies to Mary, who was in the shower singing “Singing in the Rain.  Oh my, what a way to start the day!

The time indicated was 7:00 am, and we had to set off the rockets to be in Irvine by 8:00 am.  Off we went in a cloud of dust, leaving a rooster tail of water visible from miles away.  Mary does NOT like to be late.  So we arrive 25 minutes early, time to read our books!

The eye doctor (eye surgeon and family friend) examined my eyes using a unique technique.  He asked me to drop my drawers and stand against the wall.  With two flashlights, one green and one red (likely leftovers from Christmas), he shone them in my eyes and examined the wall.   The result was two large spots, one yellow and one blue – that means I am OK!

On a more serious note, I have 20-20 and 20-30 vision, not bad for an old fart!  The doc pronounced me visually acute (I thought he meant I was visually cute).

We celebrated by going VFR to Benji’s, where we each attacked a half-sandwich and a bowl of soup.  Mary did the pastrami, and I did the corned beef.

Corned beef and pastrami both start as brined beef (often brisket), but the key difference is that pastrami is seasoned with a spicy rub (pepper, coriander) and smoked, then steamed.  At the same time, corned beef is boiled or steamed after brining, which results in a firmer texture and a milder flavor.  Pastrami gets a smoky, peppery crust, while corned meat is softer and traditionally served with cabbage.

We headed home to work around the house until about 4:00 pm, when we set out for Seal Beach for a Patty’s Place outing with Charlotte and Wayne, longtime golf friends!!

We arrived a few minutes early and sat at the bar to visit with the staff.  May had her wine, and I indulged in a “purple drink,” which is a glass of Empress 1908 with a large, clear rock in the center.

Charlotte and Wayne came in within minutes, and we were so happy to see them!

It was my job to keep Wayne giggling.  I did well!

We had a most amazing dinner; they all had short ribs, and I was the odd man out, going for the seafood special!  Furthermore, I selected some escargots floating in butter laced with garlic.  I was able to exhale and wilt flowers at the other end of the restaurant.

Ice cream, anyone?

After some serious reminiscing about days gone by, Mary and I did a Chip Shot!  It’s tradition!

We had a delightful dinner!

As we waddled toward the Silver Fox, we both decided we should go to Verde for a nightcap.  Verde is in the badlands of Irvince, about an 18-minute drive away.   We were in dire need of a drink called “Becky’s Good Hair Day, a special drink named after our daughter Becky.  Anthony was tending bar, so we had time to catch up on things since the restaurant was three minutes from closing when we arrived!

The drink arrived without floating flowers.  Anthony explained that the gardener had a cold and sneezed as he mowed the lawn right by the little flower garden used to make drinks.  It was “off with their heads.   I suggested an alternate flour, but both Anthony and Mary dismissed my amazing, creative idea with a lot of guffaw.  Note: I would have accepted wheat, rye, or simple white flour as a substitute.  I am easy!

We felt sorry for the drink and we could almost hear it whisper!

The drink looked odd without its normal floral arrangement floating on top!

“Don’t look at me, I am naked!!”

We completed our visit and headed to the Silver Fox home, an easy 17-minute drive up 73 to 55, where I put the metal to the pedal, and we were off like a herd of turtles.

Anthony has long arms; his selfies are always excellent!

We avoided the TV room and went VFR to bed, only talking for a few minutes about such a wonderful dinner.  It was good to hear and see Wayne laughing and giggling, and to see Charlotte turn red during some of my uncontrollable outbursts (Mary just put her scarf over his head and mumbled something about being kidnapped by a crazy man!).

Good night, all!

Always remember, I do NOT mouse around!

The Weak Beginith! We Are Ready!

It’s Moanday, and this we know because the work GYM (a most frightening word at our age) showed up on the “what do we do today” list!   After our five-mile bike ride and getting beaten up by professionals, we will be moaning!

Immediately after the beating, we hobbled out of the gym and decided to…

If elected, I promise MORE BREAKS!!!

Our break consisted of going to”The Original Pancake House” for a bite to eat.

Chomp chomp gurgle burp!!  Done!

Today we go back to work.  Mary is perspiring over the sewing desk while I am in the garage fixing things and attempting to find the top of the workbench before Joe comes over and does his normal inspection.  It is fantastic, the counter is free of clutter, and everything “works”.

We had a great dinner before settling in to watch some TV.  I got the XUMO Box to work, and now we have the complete Spectrum Cable channel lineup!

We crashed at 10:30 pm as tomorrow is a busy day, duh!

The Battle Continues; So Far, Christmas Three, Mary & Paul One

We were up at the crack of dawn, we put on our clothes, and were eager to take back the house from Christmas.  However, one look at the work to be done made us both pass out in sheer fear of this becoming an all-day affair.  We should note that we kept the Christmas Spirits (and plan to reduce the quantity year-round!!)

Well, it did!  We finished at 5:05 pm, with a few minutes in between, during which Mary made a bucket of beans and some cornbread for dinner.  I took 30 minutes out to watch the rest of “Transformers”!  I had to see what the outcome of the battle would be!  We won!!  Humanity 1, Aliens 0.

She is indeed an angel!

I used the two-wheeled cart to roll all the packed boxes to the garage, and Mary fixed dinner.  We tried to watch Arari (John Wayne in Africa) on the TV, but by 9:00 pm it was a lost cause.  The sound of our eyes snapping shut sounded like a herd of crickets.

Joe called and said he and the boys would put Christmas away in the garage attic later on in the week!

Good night, all!

Goodby Christmas, See You Next Year!

Mary always has a good point!!

Oh my!  The big job began this morning: packing up Christmas decorations and getting them ready for storage.  The question is, how do we get 100 pounds of %#$&# into a 50-pound bag??

We had a load of fun decorating, as evidenced by the decorating website.

(Early December) Before we started, we looked around one last time, remembering the great Christmas 2025 we enjoyed with family and friends!

We really got underway around 11:00 am and worked most of the day, but at 7:00 pm we gave up the ghost and went to the TV Room.  We called Colleen, but she was already counting sheep.  When we called Robin, she was out with the girls because Bob had a gig this evening.

I do not remember what we started watching, but I immediately began checking for light leaks.

Around 11:00 pm, I woke up and saw Mary sawing logs.  Sawdust was flying everywhere.   The neighborhood cats and dogs were in hiding from all the racket!   On exhale, the wall-mounted TV vibrated!

The TV had just started the movie “Transformers,” which I enjoyed and watched until midnight.

Transformers is a series of science fiction action films based on the Transformers franchise. Michael Bay directed the first five live-action films: Transformers, Revenge of the Fallen, Dark of the Moon, Age of Extinction, and The Last Knight, and has served as a producer for subsequent films.

(Early January) We set up a dining table, so we didn’t have to bend down as much!

We had room to sit and watch TV, but that was about all!  A few boxes got wet inside their plastic containers, which were stored outside (we still haven’t figured out how that happened).  So we lit off the fireplace and stacked those damp boxes near the front to get rid of the moisture; it worked.

The Living/TV Room was almost clear before we crashed.

It took us about 30 seconds to fall asleep!  Mary is MY SUPERWOMAN!

We will dream of tomorrow when the garage will look like this, and the boys will come over and put everything up in the garage attic.

Ready to go upstairs for the next eleven months!

Happy Tooth Of January 2026

Today, we turned the speed knob back to a mere 60 MPH after a month on the go!

Our first activity was to sit in the rain on bleachers and watch two soccer games starring the Liles’ Brothers.

Alex starred in the first game and excelled, hitting home runs and throwing three touchdowns before making the winning basket!

Joe operated the camera and stayed dry, unlike the drowned rats!

Joe and Canon stayed bone dry!

We were invited to High Tea with the Adams.  The Duchess of Bedford popularized afternoon tea; all authentic tea comes from the Camellia sinensis plant; the Irish drank more tea than the English; and there was a difference between working-class “high tea” (a substantial meal) and aristocratic “afternoon tea” (light snacks).  A Chinese Emperor discovered tea, tea bags were an accidental invention, and Darjeeling is the “Champagne of teas.

Michele (my adopted step-daughter) worked hard to create such delightful snacks.

Yummy!

We got to work.  We made Shirnky Dinks!

Shrinky Dinks are a popular craft material made of polystyrene sheets that shrink and harden when baked, transforming drawings or printed designs into small, durable plastic trinkets like charms, keychains, and jewelry.  The process involves coloring or tracing on the plastic, cutting it out, and baking it in an oven, where the piece curls up and then flattens, becoming about nine times thicker and a third of its original size.  Available as clear or frosted sheets, they’re a classic craft for all ages, allowing customization for unique keepsakes, pins, and ornaments.

The Shrinky Dinks are now in the oven, being carefully watched by the Shrinky Dink Chefs!

The results were quite impressive; this could become another artistic outlet for Mary!

Baked to perfection!

We sat and talked for quite a while, enjoying stories of yesteryear and catching up on all our mutual acquaintances!  It was fun to get together before the holidays are over, and we have to go back to work!

Michele, Paul, Mary, Theo, and Franklin.

We got home after dark and settled in the TV room to watch Avatar!

Sailing Sailing

Robin had a great idea, let’s see Newport Harbor by boat!

The “Newport Pavilion Bar and Grill” likely refers to the historic Pavilion Restaurant (now often called just Pavilion) in the iconic Balboa Pavilion building at 690 Newport Center Drive, known for its classic ambiance, waterfront views (from other parts of the building), and popular bar/happy hour, offering steak, seafood, and an extensive wine list, though it’s a distinct spot from the Harborside restaurant in the same landmark building.

Please see our website for the details.

Onward and upward!

The Moon was out, so the night was quite delightful.

Almost home!

We went to the Silver Trumpet for dinner and had a fantastic time visiting and telling old stories over and over again!

We all love family!!

We headed home and crashed!  It was a long but exciting day!

Happy New Years Eve 2025!

We are just hours away!

For whatever reason, we decided to go to the gym on New Year’s Eve, DUH!!  On the bright side, we will be flexible for this evening.  We specifically asked to have the legs stretched so we could dance the entire evening.  They did, and we will!

Look out, 2026, here we come!

Mary was zooming around the house like a caffeinated squirrel, prepping for Robin, Bob, and herself.  It was like watching a whirlwind in high heels!  Meanwhile, I was over in the corner, multitasking like a pro—folding clothes, cleaning out the backseat of the car, and trying to figure out how a pair of socks ended up in there with an old sandwich.  Seriously, who knew tuxedos came with their own built-in chaos?  I think I just set a new record for the most dry cleaning drama in history!  At this rate, we’ll need a tuxedo fitting for my sanity!

Please visit ourwebsite for the details!

Robin and Bob came over around 4:30 pm, and we had a champagne to begin the evening.  Then we departed for the Lodge, which is about a 14-minute drive down the 55 Freeway!  And yes, it was raining.

One glass of champagne and they go wild!

We checked the weather ahead of time.

We arrived on time and departed later than expected.  The music was outstanding, and the dinner was fabulous!

The Motley Crew is ready to celebrate!

We danced and visited all evening long!

Our sequined outfits made a real hit!

Iris celebrated her 99th birthday!

Born in 1927; amazing!

We had a load of fun and stayed well past our planned departure date.  Finally, around 10:30, we headed for the cars without rain!

We are done, well done!

From New Hampshire, we have three grandkids and four great-grandkids!

Colleen and family sent an image of their New Year’s Eve

We cannot forget the Desert Rats!

Son Joe and two additional grandkids!

We walked in the door and crashed immediately!  Happy New Year to all!

Driving To Camarillo For A Visit

A driving we will go!!

We jumped out of bed, showered, dressed, and headed out the door to Camirillo to visit Mary’s grandkids and another friend of Mary’s.  We drove about 200 miles this fine day, sometimes in a very light rain.

Mary dressed for the occasion!

We’re off like a herd of turtles.

We first stopped at Mary’s daughter-in-law’s home.  She was working today, so the “kids” wanted to go with us to lunch.

Steve, Diane, and Megan

Diane is also a doctor and is quite busy!  Steven and Megan were home when we arrived.  We talked for a while and then off we went.  Steven drove separately as he had an appointment at 2:00 pm.   We went to “The Lure,” which is a great seafood restaurant just off Highway 101 in Camarillo.

Lure Fish House is a family-owned restaurant featuring the freshest, sustainably caught seafood from trusted sources.  They always strive to serve locally caught seafood, organically grown local produce, and wines from local vineyards whenever possible.

I went for their cioppino!

After lunch, Steven took off to meet with his Dad, and we took Megan home.  We stopped by the house and then headed to Bonnie’s, just a few miles away!

Bonnie is the daughter of Mary’s college roommate, and they have become excellent friends.

We visited for a couple of hours.  Bonnie has four little ones; the teenager, Joanna, was happy to join in the conversation.

Their home is in a private, gated community where their 1 1/2 acres are teeming with barnyard critters, including 26 chickens!

We departed Bommie’s at 4:00 pm and spent the next two and a half hours fighting the freeway traffic, arriving home around 6:30 pm.  The first thing we did was get into our jammies, grab a glass of wine, and head for the TV room, where we watched a weird series about post-apocalyptic America.

I checked my iPhone before leaving and got a message from our son Joe.  He and the family went to the desert for a few days.  The boys had just been on a safari with Dad, attempting to keep up with them!

The family creates wonderful memories in the desert!

I checked the computer for emails before going to bed and got a message from Brother Zaitz.  He pointed out that he and Mary were on the back cover of the Elkhorn, the monthly magazine of the Santa Ana Elks.

“Yes Mam, Captain, Mam!”

We crashed almost immediately.  Four and a half hours driving in traffic wore us out!
