Friday Was The Hottest!

112 today!

We were up early this morning and stumbled into the garden, looking like zombies. I let the watering system run, hoping it wouldn’t wake up the neighborhood with its loud gurgling. We were out the door at 6:45 am and driving with the speed of a snail on vacation to my dermatologist in Los Alamitos. Who knew dermatology appointments could make for such a thrilling morning?

Dr. Newman had his trusty nitrogen bottle in hand, and Mary pointed, and the good doctor went into action.

Liquid nitrogen is a cold gas with a temperature of 196 degrees below zero Celsius (-321 Fahrenheit). It is used to freeze and destroy superficial skin growths such as warts and keratoses. Liquid nitrogen causes stinging and pain while the growth is frozen and then thawed. The discomfort can last minutes to hours, depending on the thickness of the lesion.

We departed the office at about 7:30 am and met with Vicky at Hoff’s Hut in Los Alamitos.

Hoff’s is a beautiful place to dine, adjacent to Old Ranch and the freeway!

We had an interesting conversation about children “throwing out their parents.”  The three of us understood what that meant but didn’t realize it was so prevalent.

Our favorite waitress was on duty, and she rolled by to say hello!

Merrily, we roll along, roll along, roll along!

After breakfast and two cups of coffee we split with Vicky returning home and us heading to Orange.

Finally, my heart got started!

On the way home, Dianne called, and David took a turn for the worse, so we had Precious speed up. We flew by the house, picked up The Silver Fox, picked Dianne up, and headed to the hospital.

The new gate was installed while we were changing cars, and we told the guys to take care of the vicious dog, Scout.

It opened and closed with ease. The old wooden gate was bye-bye!

There was a parking spot right out front, and we were up on the third floor in a flash. The crisis had passed, so we stayed around until the transportation folks arrived to take David to a hospice facility.

Mary and I returned home and quickly cleaned the house because Domi and the crew were coming to clean it at 3:00 pm, and then we headed to the new facility.

We stopped at Del Taco for some grub for us and Dianne and then went to the hospice house.  David had just arrived and was getting settled in when we showed up.

We stayed until almost 6:00 pm. Robin had just arrived at our house, but she had the keys and made herself at home.  We got there a few minutes later.

We visited with Robin and made several calls to friends Mike and Bridgette, Pam Reed, and others. We were exhausted, so it was early evening!

Just before hitting the sack I went to the web si see when it was going to cool down.  Yikes, three more days of this crazy heat!

It’s a hotter Sunday than today! Oh My!

104 Degrees Today! Oh My!!

We walked the garden and went picking, and to our surprise, we chose a large cardboard box of goodies; cooking this afternoon will be in order as it is too hot to go outside!  We harvested in the garden to make kale chips for Dianne.

The bells were ringing!

We brought everything inside and washed them up to give them away.

The kale was soaked, then torn up, salted, and roasted at 400 degrees until dry. Mary then topped them with cheese until it melted, and we had kale chips fit for a king!

The kale needed to be soaked to get rid of the bugs!

Mary made kale chips using the fresh kale from our garden.  We plan to take it to Dianne at the hospital so she has something to munch on while she is there.

Dog-A-Puss, generally called Scout, had an appointment at the beauty parlor at 10:45 am, so that we will drop him by on our way to the Elks Lodge!

We plan to crank up that A.C. until it’s blowing snowballs.

We checked the forecast before we departed for the Elks!

After dropping Scout off at the beauty parlor, we headed to the Elks Lodge for Girls Night Out. We had a great time with the gang.

We went to the hospital from the Elks to check on David and Dianne.  The decision was made to move David to a beautiful hospice facility that is only minutes away from Dianne’s home and a mere 10 minutes from us.

One hundred two degrees and the elevators were broken; I parked on the 7th floor.

It was hot as Hades outside, peaking at 112 degrees on Chapman Blvd. on our way home.

OUCH! Check the temp!

We stayed at the house until about 7:00 p.m. when Dianne called, and we joined her to see the hospice facility. It was a six-room facility, and it was spotless. Two RNs attend the facility, and geriatric doctors come every day. If all goes well, David will be moved tomorrow, the 6th.

Hospice care focuses on the care, comfort, and quality of life of a person with a severe illness who is approaching the end of life. At some point, it may not be possible to cure a severe illness, or a patient may choose not to undergo specific treatments. Hospice is designed for this situation.

Upon arriving home, we looked outside, and it was still 80 degrees, so we decided to once more take the plunge into the magnificent waters of Casa Valencia.

We had a cloud show overhead as we swam around.

Of course, my trusty plastic wine glass and float made the dip in the liquid wonderful!

I was floating and sipping; what a life!

Around 11:00 p.m., I make Scout get up and go outside. He had been sleeping most of the evening because the beauty parlor took a lot out of him.

Time to tinkle, little one!

One good tinkle, and we’re in for the night! We pray with Dianne and David for a smooth transition to the new facility.

Oh My; The End Of Summer Has Arrived!

We know it is the end of summer!   A looming heat wave in Southern California could break records this week as temperatures will likely climb well above 100 degrees in parts of the region.  The heat wave will bring temperatures roughly 12 to 14 degrees above average in northern Orange County. Several cities, including Brea and Fullerton, may hit triple-digits on Friday.

This is nothing new. Having lived in California all my life, I know there is always a spike at the end of summer, and people worry about the weather.  As we get old, we say “poo” to the gas and electric companies and get the pool ready for a full day of activities!

At 8:15 am, we departed in the Silver Fox for our biweekly battle with our personal trainers.  We arrived on time and did the prerequisite 30+ minutes on the cycles.  Over time, I have moved the workload into the middle range, and I hope that by the end of this next quarter, I can ride uphill the whole time.

I hate it when Mary uses the 50-pound weights, and I still push 30s!

We made a daring voyage to the mystical land of the market, which exists right next to our humble gym. There, we acquired the sacred elixir of calcium known as milk and other essential artifacts for our survival before embarking on the treacherous journey back to our sanctuary at Casa Valencia.

We went into the garage attic and downloaded the Halloween and Fall decorations so we could begin making the house look spooky!

Dianne called, and we decided we should go to the hospital, stay with her for a while, and then take her to lunch; we need to make sure she is caring for herself in this period of turmoil!

In better times!

We went to Benji’s Deli on Tustin and devoured pastrami at an alarming rate!

Oh My!!! What have I done??

After lunch, we dropped off Dianne at the hospital and headed home. As we drove up Chapman Blvd, the car’s thermometer registered 105 degrees.

105?? We could be in Phoenix!!

Upon arriving home, we decided to watch TV in the TV room (once known as the living room) as it was too hot to do anything else.

At 8:30 p.m., we ventured outside into the heat and went swimming. We splashed around for about 90 minutes before returning inside, which was excellent!

It is wine time!!

The blue floaters are handy; I can let the currents take me all over the pool!

It’s time to go inside and out of the water; I am beginning to look like a Shar Pei dog!

We brushed our teeth and hit the sack at 10:15 pm!

Tuesday And We Are Going To Let Blood!

Say what?  It’s that time of year again when they empty out my veins like a maple tree in spring. With Mary by my side, we were up at the crack of dawn, bleary-eyed and ready to hit the road for the “six gallons of blood” extravaganza. It’s like a vampire’s dream come true! Maybe I should ask for a frequent donor card.

The new vampire at the doctor’s office was incredible; we were in and out in five minutes without a blood-curdling scream!

We headed home, but I decided to stop at The Gourmet Pie Company in Los Alamitos. Gourmet Pie and Cafe is a family-owned and operated restaurant started in 1984 by Ruthie, Tony, and Mike Richards. They started Gourmet Pie so they could share their dedication to and obsession with delicious recipes and baked goods with everyone.  The restaurant was initially located in Cypress and started as a bakery specializing in pies, cakes (wedding cakes), breads, pastries, and cookies. Soon after opening, we expanded their menu to include some of our favorite home-cooked meals.

Located on Katella in Los Alamitos

After a fantastic meal, we departed for home, with the only stop being CVS for some meds.  In the afternoon, we did some chores and took naps as the temperature outside was in the 90s.

Mary woke me up around 5:00 pm, and I was tasked with cooking the filet mignon steaks.  These suckers were two inches thick and therefore required an expert’s touch!  I had marinated them for several hours, and they were ready to go!

Why did the steak get promoted? It was a cut above the rest!

They are soaking away!

They went onto the very hot griddle with lots of sizzling and steam.  I gave them three minutes on each side to sear the surface, then lowered the stove to medium and let them cook four minutes per side until the internal temperature was 130 degrees.

In the pan and ready to be eaten!

The word “steak” comes from the Old Norse word “steik,” meaning “roast,” which shows how long this delicious food has been part of human culture.

Meanwhile, Mary prepped the plates with stuffed squash and a stuffed jalapeno!  I gave her a three-minute warning so she could nuke her plates, and the steaks were added after a few minutes of sitting.

Oh my!!! A meal fit for a Ma-Ha-Ra-Ja!

Around 7:00 p.m., Dianne came by after being at the hospital, and we prepared another plate for her; she had half of Mary’s steak! Dianne polished it off without delay. We worry about her keeping herself well, as she has been in and out of the hospital for the past 45 days.

Happier times will always be remembered!

Dianne bid us farewell, and we eagerly made our way to the inviting pool, where the water was a blissful 91 degrees, creating a warm and comforting atmosphere. As we floated around, the carefree ambiance prompted endless giggles and laughter, filling the air with pure joy for another delightful 90 minutes.

Mary is like a duck in the water!

After all the floating, we crashed hard.  I went to brush my teeth and upon returning Mary had attempted to read, but she was sound to sleep;  I removed her glasses, put the book on the table, tucked her in, and kissed her goodnight.

Happy Pierogi Day!

Pierogi are filled dumplings made by wrapping unleavened dough around a filling and cooked in boiling water. They are occasionally flavored with a savory or sweet garnish. Typical fillings include potato, cheese, quark, sauerkraut, ground meat, mushrooms, fruits, and berries.

Did You Know? Traditionally considered peasant food, pierogi eventually gained popularity and spread throughout all social classes, including nobles. Some cookbooks from the 17th century describe how, during that era, the pierogi were considered a staple of the Polish diet, and each holiday had its own special kind of pierogi created. Different shapes and fillings were made for holidays such as Christmas and Easter. Important events like weddings had their own particular type of pierogi kurniki – filled with chicken. Also, pierogi were made especially for mourning or wakes, and some for caroling season in January.Pierogi are an essential part of Polish culture and cuisine today. They are served in various forms and tastes (from sweet to salty to spicy) and are considered the national dish. They are served at many festivals, playing an essential role as a cultural dish. At the 2007 Pierogi Festival in Kraków, 30,000 pierogi were consumed daily.

Polish pierogi are often filled with fresh quark, boiled and minced potatoes, and fried onions. This type is called in Polish pierogi ruskie, which literally means “Ruthenian pierogi” (sometimes being mistranslated as “Russian pierogi”). Ruskie pierogi are probably the most popular pierogi in North America and Poland. The other famous pierogi in Poland are filled with ground meat, mushrooms, and cabbage, or an assortment of fruits (berries, with strawberries or blueberries the most common) for dessert. Sweet pierogi are usually served with sour cream, sugar, and savory pierogi with bacon fat and bacon bits. But before Pierogi time, it was time to get bent!   Mary was in her kerchief, and I was in my cap.  We had just settled down to a long morning’s nap when, out on the breakfast table, there rose such a clatter that I sprang from my seat to see what was the matter.

The dreaded alarm clock reminded us we had to go!  Yes, kiddies, it’s time for the dreaded three-letter word, GYM.  We dressed for the occasion and departed in The Silver Fox.

We arrived and did our 45-minute pre-workout bike rides, leaving the machines ready for the junkyard since smoke was pouring off the back wheels and brakes!

My trainer said “Time to exercise?”  I was so happy,  I thought I  heard “extra fries!”

I’m not a fan of jumping rope, so I tend to skip it.

I got onto the floor and did floor exercises for half an hour, then went to the weights and strength machines, where I am a veritable strong man, able to use three-pound weights with no problem.

Note: The painful sounds and creaking of bones were edited out of this video to save you significant discomfort!

After removing approximately 600 calories, we went to The Coffee Grove, about a two-minute walk from the gym.

We refilled our bodies with the 300 calories we had just lost!

We got an alert: The National Weather Service has issued an Excessive Heat Warning for Orange County Inland on September 2.

We went home and planted some artichokes and dill that we picked up yesterday!

Mary decided to make some extra spicy jalapeno peppers for tonight’s dinner with the kids. It looks like the kids are in for a wild ride at dinnertime!

Notice the gloves; she was brilliant!

Robin and Bob strutted in around 2:00 p.m., ready to conquer Pierogi Night. As the wine flowed, we embarked on a pierogi extravaganza with an array of flavors to dazzle our taste buds. Meanwhile, Bob unleashed his top-secret sauce to accompany a mountain of sizzling sausages. It was a feast so grand that even the neighbors were tempted to crash our royal gathering!

Instead of the neighbors crashing the gates, we took an offering to Jeff and, a few minutes later, received a thumbs-up from him via text message.

The next step for stuffed jalapenos is to wrap them in turkey bacon and then put them in the oven!  The jalapenos were picked this morning and were full of flavor.

I put the bacon in at 350 degrees and set an eight-minute timer. The countdown was like waiting for a rocket launch, but instead of a rocket, it was bacon!

“Bacon, did someone say bacon?”  Scout sniffer was going crazy between the stuffed peppers, sausages, and pierogi!

“Do not forget me!”

The professor was at work slaving over a hot stove and creating a dining experience not to be forgotten!

The pots were boiling cauldrons of water for the pierogis to dance around.

The sausages were cooked to absolute perfection.

This sausage roll only contains 2% of your daily intake of calories… if you lick it.

“I am ready, all ready!”

I love how even the pierogis had their little name tags at the party. It’s like they were saying, ‘Hello, my name is Pierogi, and I’ll be your delicious snack for the evening.

The dinner bell was struck, and we all yelled, “Come and get it!”

The food disappeared as if my magic.  The feeding frenzy was so vicious that the camera was spared the sight of flying pierogies and the gobbling of sausages.

Full tummies; happy yummies!

Oops, I forgot to mention Bob’s pièce de résistance, tour de force, showpieces, claim to fame, and jewel in the crown—shishito peppers sauteed in a secret oil only known to Chef Abdullah Bashir al Khalid Duda!

“I dare you to take a bite out of me!!”

After dinner, we took the kids shopping in the garden and filled two bags with goodies, including grapes, berries, squash, tomatoes, kale, and other goodies.   Chef Duda said he felt like a greengrocer (A greengrocer is a person who owns or operates a shop selling primarily fruit and vegetables.).

Mary was on the prowl for more snacks, as if she were a secret agent searching for the world’s best cookies. Meanwhile, Scout diligently checks the bushes for any hidden elephants because you never know when those sneaky elephants might try to crash the party!

“Come on, Scout, I need you to help!”

Scout does NOT look like he is fourteen years old and often acts like a puppy.

“Hang on there; I am coming to assist!”

The kid departed after cleaning everything up!  For us, it was like going out to dinner.

After the kids departed, we watched TV and the end of the Seal Team series. While watching the show, we took the beans from the dry peapods so we could make soup soon!

Then, the 90-degree pool was calling.  We floated around, laughed, and giggled for another hour.

The First Of September Has Arrived!

Funny signYou think that was funny, well, it was not.  I have fallen over several times and am considering going commando to avoid getting black and blue spots all over.

We had our morning coffee and planned out the day!

What shall we cook today?

Last night, only one of my brilliant ideas survived past sundown. From now on, I’ll stick to creating memes instead of desserts!

One remains; it shall not last the night!

We went to the pier about a week ago and bought some replacement whirlygigs, as the UV from the Sun had done a job on the originals. They lasted almost three years. This time, I plan to spray them every six months with our UV protection spray and see what happens.

Below is Scout making his way around his yard, looking for elephants.

New whirligigs replace the oldies.

We could not have a true yard without a tribute to the grape!

Grab a glass if you dare

We headed to the garden with cutters in hand!

Mary on her way to the garden!

Our cucumber plant must have mistaken itself for a never-ending cucumber factory! It’s like it’s on a mission to cover the entire yard in cucumbers. I’m starting to suspect it’s secretly plotting to take over the world with its green, crunchy army!

The cucumbers keep on growing.

Kale is also going strong, but I see kale chips in the near future. Mary has the chip-making down to a science. Kale is a nutrition superstar due to its high amounts of vitamins A, B6, C, K, folate, fiber, carotenoids, and manganese. One cup of raw kale has just 20 calories.

Kale chips shortly.

We were amazed that our vineyard, being only two years old, produced so many grapes! Perhaps it is because of the runoff from the garden? We have bunches of table grapes available now.

We had more grapes today!

The red flame grapes are going crazy. We do have to keep the vines trimmed, but they want to grow, and we want the energy put into making grapes instead.

Ready to pick!

The zucchinis are also growing wild again. These two were for dinner tonight, as Mary had too much “stuffing” for our bell peppers. I wandered out into the garden about 5:00 p.m. and invited them to come inside.

Soon to be dinner!

The potting bench is better organized than it appears.  The tarp covers it when it is not in use.

The work bench is back to normal!

In my next life, I want to be a Scout!  The baby is the true ruler of the household, with beds strategically placed all over the place. He watches his humans work tirelessly to ensure his comfort and serve him his favorite meal. It’s a tough job being a baby, but someone’s got to do it!  He is 94 in dog years!

“Daddy, what are you doing?”

I drove Mary to the hospital at 11:30 am so she could feed David.  Dianne had some errands that needed to be done.  I dropped off Mary and rushed home to embark on a Pierogi treasure hunt in our freezer. It was like a Pierogi jackpot – I found four packages we had bought yesterday and then stumbled upon another four hidden in the deep freezer. Looks like we’re all set for a Pierogi feast!

I missed Mary, so I returned to the hospital at 1:15 p.m., and we stayed until 3:30 p.m. and visited.

On the way home, Mary decided to stuff the peppers that I “accidentally” put into the basket. The colored peppers are from Ralph’s, while the green babies are from our garden—picked today!

I cleaned them up and then nuked them to soften the skin.

Stuffed peppers, here we come.

Mary worked magic making the stuffing. I was busy prepping the peppers, so I have yet to get any pictures of the process she goes through to make such a creation.  The aroma wafted throughout the house, and Scout, The Wonder Dog, went wild!

She was working her magic.

Stuffed and coated with cheese, they were ready for the last step: the oven at 350 degrees.

Almost ready!

We had too much stuffing, so I suggested we use a crookneck squash and a zucchini!  I went to the garden and invited three of our little friends inside.  I slit them down the center and scooped out the seeds.  After eight minutes in the microwave, they were ready for stuffing.

We watched Seal Team on our small TV at the end of the counter, keeping an eye on the goodies in the oven!

“Do you want to know the magic ingredient?”

Wow! We had an amazing dinner. We each had a pepper, and it was so good that we split the crookneck squash. We took one over to Jeff, along with a tookie from yesterday!

The final product!  I was excellently done!  I keep thinking I am so lucky!

We had a cookie and a glass of milk for dessert!

Tookies for dessert!

We got a text from Vicky, and she has a man in the house full-time! Clark Gable decided to move in with Vicky! Clark is a full-sized wax figure from the Movieland Wax Museum, which closed several years back.

Did You Know? The Movieland Wax Museum was the largest wax museum in the United States, with over 300 wax figures in 150 sets. Located in Buena Park, California, it was one of the most famous wax museums in the United States for decades. It was located north of Knott’s Berry Farm on Beach Boulevard.

On August 19, 2002, the museum’s founder, Allen Parkinson, died from natural causes at 83 years old in his Rhode Island home. On October 31, 2005, after forty-three years in business and 10 million visitors, Movieland closed. The reason for its closure was declining visitors and revenue.

Vicky has a friend!

Dianne came by after she visited with David, and we yakked for an hour or so!  She and Mary have been friends for over thirty years; she is like a sister!

We hit the sack around 10:00 p.m. so we can be ready for the physical abuse that will come tomorrow morning at the gym!

The Letter And Notes Keep Arriving!

Here I was, innocently minding my own business, when the computer burped and said, “You have Mail!”  I had not heard that phrase in years (remember AOL?), so I jumped to the keyboard, pulled the levers, hit the accelerator, and put it into gear!  To my surprise, a message from Peanut (Becca’s mother) with the subject line of  “You have been spotted!!” appeared.  Oh Dear, what did I do?  Then I remembered, I am ALWAYS well behaved so it must be about Mary!

She behaved rather well except for …, …, …, and…

The first thing that came to mind was, “What did Mary do now??”  Carefully, I punched the “Show It” button and immediately knew it was regarding the now world-famous “The Cackle Movie.”   Mary was spotted yesterday by Roger’s Garden’s photographer  (The White Witch).  The friendly witch mentioned she would make Mary a movie star!

If you have yet to eat OR you have a strong stomach, please click the arrow for a 20-second romp through Roger’s Gardens opening day. Be treated to the ear-splitting cackle at the end! Smelling salts are highly recommended, and an air sickness bag might be needed if you are the least bit queasy!

Get ready, get set…. last warning!  Go!!!

After watching the movie several times, I decided to become Mary’s manager for future photo/movie opportunities  (NOTE: I did not quit my day job!!)

It was also noticed that directly after the cackle, birds began dropping from the trees and bees began flying backwards.

I fully expect a restraining order for Mary to arrive any time now!

OK, we had to get back to serious things! Mary and I rode over to the hospital to see David and visit with Dianne. His long-time friend and doctor were there to have some serious discussions. I decided to opt-out and waited in the hallway. David had lunch, albeit late in the afternoon.

We headed home, and I got bitten by the cooking bug and proceeded to make an apple pie —whatever! I made it up from puffed pastry and a can of apple pie filling!

We saved the apple peels and put them in the oven at 220 to dry!

We rolled out the puff pastry and let it sit for a good hour before the hard work began!

Flatter than a pancake!

With the greatest of care, I placed the apples into the center of the three cutouts and cut a 45-degree slice down each side. With the care of a surgeon, I laced the dough over the apples, attempting to make a picture-worthy item, but alas, it wasn’t that pretty!

After stuffing the pastry, it was placed in the oven at 340 for about twenty minutes; when it was golden brown, it was removed!

While the apples were cooling, we visited Jeff on the porch. We swapped stories and drank wine until the wee hours (at our age, wee is defined as anything after 8:00 p.m.). We sat for an hour and a half, remembering all those things that never happened!

We had a swinging time!

At 9:00 pm, we were totally beat and decided to hit the sack while binge-watching Seal Team. Even the toughest of SEALs need their beauty sleep!   How did I know I was a Seal?  Mary threw me a couple of sardines!  That was fishy!

Halloween Has Arrived!

Yes, we know it is not even September yet, but we are in the mood for the holiday season to begin.  Last night, Robin and Mary started the yearly calendar coordination activities as we have to plan for:

  • Halloween pumpkin carving and the Halloween Elks Ball, decorating, etc.
  • Thanksgiving, Starlighters Around The World, Chinese Nights at the Huntington, etc.
  • Christmas, Scrooge, Night of 10,000 Lights, Elks Ball, Mission Inn,  Alley Cats, etc.

So, at 6:30 am, we were up and getting ready to go.  Robin was already up and moving before us.  We headed out for our adventure around 8:15 am to get there when they opened!

There was a line already formed when we arrived!

Remember, “Life’s a witch, and then you fly!”

We spent what felt like 45 years standing in line before we finally made it into the boutique. By the time we got there, my feet were ready to retire!

We had a lot to look at while waiting in the moving line.

Finally, we arrived at the entrance! And by “finally,” I mean after taking about 100 wrong turns and getting lost at least thrice. I’m sure we set a new record for the longest journey from the parking lot to the entrance. Thank goodness we packed snacks!

Mary met Roger’s White Witch just before we went inside!

We are about to enter.  Remember, demons are a ghoul’s best friend.

We hope we get out alive!

Inside was a veritable cacophony of Halloween decorations!

We were glad we brought a cart along with us.

We strolled, chatted, and splurged for a good 90 minutes and somehow managed to only spend $400! Our bargain-hunting skills look as practical as those of a cat-herding class!

Mirror mirror on the wall, how do we escape this place??

We decided to have lunch at the American Legion on the Balboa Peninsula since it was just five minutes away!

The kitchen opened at 11:30 am.

We had a drink before ordering.  We hoped we could handle our boos.

We have so much fun together! We wished Colleen were here!

We peered at the boats while on the pier.

We walked out on the pier before jumping in The Silver Fox to drive home.

After getting home, we went to see David in the hospital and visited with Dianne.  We brought her a burrito and Diet Coke, her go-to lunch!  David is likely to go into hospice in the next few days, so we plan to go into high gear and make sure we can do everything Dianne might need.

Returning home, we got dressed for Campus Jax, where we were going to meet Jim and Vicky, Ed and Betty, and several others at 6:30 for dinner and to watch Santana’s soft music!

Let’s say the music was not as “soft” as expected!

We left halfway through the performance as our ears were exploding. Vicky, Jim, Ed, and Betty also left early.

We stopped by Aces Bar and Grill and had a nightcap before facing Scout The Wonder Dog.

Let’s Go, Chop Chop!

It’s 0-Dark Thirty, and we’re up and about, getting ready for our voyage to see the doctor in Long Beach. It’s so early; even the roosters are hitting the snooze button!  We departed Casa Valencia at 6:50 am and hit the 55 freeway about five minutes later.  The freeways were clear, and we landed in Long Beach half an hour early.

We had 30 minutes to spare, so I did the most logical thing—I went to Micky D’s for a breakfast Mac and a latte. Why waste precious minutes on anything but a breakfast of champions, right?

We arrived at the office on time only to find out our trusty scheduler was not so trustworthy!  She forgot to put us on the schedule.  Oh my!   We decided to wait and fall between bis booked appointments, and it worked out.   By 10 am, he cut into my head and removed a hunk of cancer, sending it off to make sure the margins were clean.

The Turkey is in position for being carved!

Thank goodness for the shot to kill the pain!

I am such a cut-up!

The margins were clear, meaning they got all traces of the cancer, so I was up and out the door by 11:15 am. At that time, we pointed the Silver Fox south toward Santa Ana to get to Girl’s Night Out before noon. I set a new record for the fastest exit!  It’s like I was competing in the “Leaving Work Olympics”!

At the Elks, we met up with the gang, minus Bill Capps, who was at home attending to his bride, who had some medical issues. George was with us but departed early to get home and dine on his dessert before Beverly got to it!

So lovely to be with friends!  (Bob & Will, Mary & Iris)

Bob Z got the camera to prove I was there.  It’s hard for us to keep a straight face because of the teasing going back and forth!

Another successful “Girls Night Out” adventure!

Bob played with the iPhone camera controls and created a super B&W image. Does this look like a two-hundred seventy-five-year-old group?

We might look better in B&W.

We stopped at the electronics store to rescue Marsha Brander from her TV-induced boredom. We picked out a shiny new TV, brought it home, and eagerly turned it on—only to be greeted with a scene from a 1980s science fiction movie.

All the channels looked like they were playing the same show, and the characters were so blurry we thought it was a covert operation instead of a TV broadcast. It was like watching TV without glasses on! Our rescue mission turned into a swift return mission.

When we got home, Mary took a short nap, and I took out the trash barrels and made a small video of the garden, as our trainer had requested.

Note: The following video is almost 100MB long, so it may take a few seconds to load!  Our personal trainer wanted to see our garden.  The video is about five minutes long.

We worked around the house until Robin joined us at 5:00 pm.  She is staying overnight, so we can go to Roger’s Gardens tomorrow morning to start Halloween!

After we talked to Vicky and Colleen on the bat phone, we realized it was Hannah’s birthday!

Hannah is Paul’s niece, the daughter of Diane, Sue’s sister. We called Hannah, but she was out and about, so Mary, Robin, and I sang “Happy Birthday” to her on her answering machine!

We had a small dinner before heading to Jeff’s for a visit. We got the menu for Jeff’s upcoming party and headed home.  Our house is easy to find as we have Govee lighting on the house.

The app, hosted on our iPhones, allows myriad effects and 64,000,000 colors!

We decided to run random lighting tonight, but we will change it to Halloween effects in a week!

While walking home, Hannah texted us to thank us for the birthday greeting.  She also revealed that I AM GOING TO BE A GREAT UNCLE AGAIN!  Hannah is four months along, as evidenced by the following:

I am feeling old!

A few years ago, Hannah and Jon (our oldest grandson) were little kids.  Jon is 35 now and living with his beautiful wife, Sarah, in New Hampshire.

They used to be afraid of the Easter Bunny!

Both my nieces are now mommies!  Wow, life sure changes!  We will see the girls in September or October to celebrate a birthday and again when Hannah’s baby comes in January.

Returning home, we hit the sack early because tomorrow is the big day! Scout was ready for bed this evening!

“OK, Pops! It’s time for you to go to bed!”

Hump Day Has Arrived!

We enjoyed our morning coffee!

The alarm went off, and we were up like shots. I got my exercise in, just trying to get into my sweatpants! That’s one way to start the day with some unexpected morning cardio!

By 8:15 am, we were dressed and ready to battle with our trainers!  I assumed the position of most minor pain, lying on the floor!  He jumped me and bent my legs into a pretzel.  I was not worried until I saw my right knee whiz by my left ear and the sound of crunching bones!

After the gym, we headed home to get bandaids and other first-aid goodies.    Then we did our Wednesday house cleaning activity to ensure the house was clean for the house cleaners!

I remembered the first rule of house cleaning while listening to music: the toilet brush is never the microphone.

Domi arrived, and we took off to do our chores.   But first, I told her, “Both of us can’t look good at the same time; it’s me or the house.”

Michaels is a great place to shop for DYI artsy-fartsy items.  Michaels Stores, Inc., more commonly known as Michaels, is a privately held chain of American and Canadian arts and crafts stores. It is North America’s largest provider of arts, crafts, framing, floral and wall décor, and merchandise for makers and do-it-yourself home decorators.

Shopping at Michaels is always fun!

We looked carefully at the skeletons that were already out for Halloween.  Kinky little suckers they were!

Oops!

We had to get this one because that is how we feel when using the derned computer. Who knew that pressing a bunch of buttons could be so emotionally draining?

How Mary and I feel when using the computer!

We took a detour on the way home and made a pit stop at Ralph’s Market to stock up on some dinner treats. Because let’s be honest, what’s a meal without a side of spontaneous grocery shopping, right?

Mary told me about her desire to attend medical school and what happened during the entrance exam!

No kidding!

Mary cooked a great dinner, and while she went to the kitchen, Scout (The Wonder Dog) and I played in the family room.  I got down, put my nose next to his, and then woke him up!   He was a bit startled.  After a few minutes of me scratching him, we wanted me to stay!

Scout wanted me to stay!

We had dinner and then attempted to save the world on Jeff’s front porch! It turns out that the world’s fate is best discussed over chardonnay and old scotch!

Returning home, we went into the swim spa and soaked for 45 minutes before bed.  Tomorrow, Paul has to get two surgeries on his face to remove bad stuff.    Our appointment in Long Beach is at 8:00 am, so we will be up and running at 5:30 am.
