Off And Running! The Machines Take Over!

Fact: Next time you’re at the mall, stop by a mid-range department store and take a look at the belt selection. Chances are you’ll see the words “genuine leather” stamped on the underside. Though, yes, that does mean the belt is 100 percent leather, it also means that it’s made of the cheapest grade of leather: several low-quality layers of hide pasted together. “Top-grain leather” is what you’ll find in fine leather goods and designer stores, but, of all the widely available forms, “full-grain leather” is the highest quality and longest-lasting type.

The medication I am using for skin cancer is really doing a job on me so I called the dermatologists.  I will see him Friday at 6:30 AM.

Our cleaning folks came right on time and we were ready for them.  We had gotten up and prepared for a 120-mile ride in Precious.  Yes, it was go to Banning day and visit with Annie and Virgil.   What really happened was that Annie called earlier and was not feeling well and waved us off.  We went anyway because we had food for them.  Mary went inside and saw them for maybe ten minutes and I waited in the car. We were back home by noon.

Our contractor was bust yesterday.  He brought around the building materials and continued removing dirt from the garden area.

There is a lot more remaining in the driveway!

The upright PVC is for watering the planters.  I plan to use multiple driplines to cover the beds.  They are controlled by a computer that resides on the patio and I can control the watering cycles from my iPhone using the Hydra-Wise software.

Almost done but we have some additional dirt to remove.

The Hunter system is great especially since I can operate it from my iPhone.

It is connected to the internet and if it rains, the system will turn off the sprinklers.

Scout is confused as he had the entire yard to himself and now he has to share with machinesIn, tents, and piles of dirt!

Scout inspects his yard, or what remains of it!.

When we returned, we stopped by Aces Bar & Grille for lunch and we shared a glass of wine.  Mary did the salad and I went for jalapeno poppers and ceviche.

Did You Know? Ceviche is a healthy Peruvian dish that is usually served as an appetizer. It’s generally made from raw fresh fish or shrimp, that’s marinated in lemon and/or lime citrus juices. The acidity in the citrus cures the fish causing it to denature the proteins and become firm and opaque while absorbing flavor.

It was mid-afternoon when we finally got home and the temperature was in the 90s so we stayed inside and did some chores.  Around 6:00 PM we decided the swim spa would be nice so we jumped in.  We sat by the fire ring for a while before going to bed.  I was dead tired from not sleeping the last two nights.  I did not last long before I was sawing logs.

I’m so good at sleeping that I can do it with my eyes closed.

Dig Baby Dig! Construction Site Is Established!

Fact:  Around 40% of all seaborne cargo is oil.

It’s going to be another hot one so I decided to go to the pool today.  The public pool is right around the corner but I have been banned from going there again!

The yard is now looking like a construction site.  This will be going on for about 6-8 weeks as it is a large job.  I watched a documentary about how they fix steel girders together last night. It was riveting!

The shade is needed because it is in the 90s for most of the day!

Our contractor was on time today because, at 10:00 AM, we heard a clatter of machinery and an engine starting up.  We had a Bobcat in the driveway. Not the wild kind!

Well, he measured and came to inform us that the gate had to be removed, and we had to dig up Mary’s little flower garden.  The plants went into plastic bags and I watered them.  I plan to rototill the bed they came from and add peralite.

We had brunch at about 11:00 AM, and most of the goodies came from the garden we had established already.  There has never been a sadness that can’t be cured by breakfast food.

Good groceries!

He made it past the gas meter with 1.2 to spare.

He passed through two gates and about eighty feet of concrete block wall, entering the backyard with a thud.

Made it with inches to spare.

Now the easy part begins.  The Bobcat will be here for two days, and then we will trade it for a trencher, which will be used for the foundation of the brick walls that retain the soil.

Run for the south forty

The first bite is taken, and we warned him the ground was hard!  He worked for fifteen minutes getting the Bobcat to get a grip on the soil.

Taking the first bite

The first swath was tough; the ground was hard.

By the end of the afternoon, he got a fair amount loosened up.  Tomorrow the remainder will be removed, and the whole area will be taken down 4-6 inches.

40′ by 30′ area will be cleared so the garden can go in around mid-August!

We went off to the gym at 4:00 PM and worked the kinks out of our backs from the long ride to Oregon.  I’m into fitness. Fit’ness pizza in my mouth.

We passed by Jan’s on our return and brought her some goodies.  We made it home just before sunset.

My knee was still questionable, so I sat on the patio and read a book while Mary worked in the yard trimming plants.

We crashed at about 9:00 PM.

It’s Monday!

Fact: A group of porcupines is called a prickle.

The following sign is soo true.  We are just enjoying life and each other surrounded by family and friends.

Our contractor showed up at about 7:30 AM and began the six-week garden project.

Paul ordered a new flag for Independence Day from Amazon.  Now we have a pretty sizable set of secondary flags for the holidays!

Did you hear about the kid who bungee-jumped from the school’s flag pole?  He was suspended

The flag looks excellent when flying in the breeze

We change flags quite often.  Our pole is almost thirty feet high and comes down real easy with the push of four buttons, each representing a seven-foot section.

Our newest flag

Breakfast is on its way!  We are having a nice salad for brunch, and a lot of the content comes from our garden,

Mary is cooking up a storm.

Mary checked, and the baby needed his shots, so off we went to VCA.

VCA in Orange, CA

Paul had to wear the shirt Scout got him for Father’s Day.  The staff got a kick out of the shirt.   I asked the folks at the VCA Clinic if they knew why dogs chase their tails!  Paul thought the answer obvious; they were trying to make both ends meet.

We told the doctor that in addition to the shots, Scout kept eating garlic, and his bark was worse than his bite.

“It’s OK, pal, you will be just fine.

It was almost 100 degrees today, so we invited Dianne and David to come for dinner.  Dianne brought her enchiladas, and we provided everything else, including a 75-degree house.

David and Dianne joined us for dinner.

Paul’s face is a mess as he is using Fluorouracil.  This medication is used on the skin to treat pre-cancerous and cancerous skin growths.  Fluorouracil belongs to a class of medicines known as anti-metabolites.  It works by blocking the growth of abnormal cells that cause the skin condition.  Complete healing of the inflammation generally takes one to two months.  In addition to treating clinically visible lesions, Fluorouracil can also treat subclinical lesions6 that may have become clinically visible in the future.

This evening it hurt, so I decided to kill the pain with wine.  It did not kill the pain, but it put Paul to sleep, giving him some relief.

Paul was hurting because of the treatments I was taking.

Paul got up in the middle of the night feeling not so good and needed a laugh.  I got an image of dufus giving a speech, and it had one of her more intelligent statements in the speech.  I now know how dumb a box of rocks is.

If that woman picked her nose, her head would collapse!

Paul finally went to bed at midnight; Mary reminded Paul that we have a haircut planned for Saturday.  I asked her, “What do you call a line of men waiting to get haircuts?”  She was puzzled, so I answered, “A barberqueue.”

Fact: Plants do respond to sound. Talking to plants to help them grow is a well-known old wives’ tale, but studies have shown vibration (like music, or perhaps even the sweet sound of your voice) can affect plant growth. Plus, the Myth Busters (in an admittedly not-so-scientific study) compared a silent greenhouse to one where they piped in a voice soundtrack and found that plants in the latter grew more.

Food for thought!

Mary hit the kitchen first so we could be ready for visitors this afternoon. Zucchini bread is our favorite.

Zucchini bread in the making!

Scout bought me a new T-Shirt, with a bit of help from his mommy.

Scout is so thoughtful.

I watered the south forty all day, getting it ready to be dug up; the garden contractor is coming at 7:00 AM tomorrow.   The ground was hard, so the water should make the job a little easier.

Tomorrow the garden begins.

Meanwhile, the little loaves of bread are getting toasty in the kitchen. Mary likes her new silicone pans.

Bread in the oven

The Liles’ came over, and the boys went swimming with Apollo. Apollo made Scout tired, so Scout went inside and rested. The boys were in the pool for a good hour and then into the swim spa to warm up. Robin, Mary, Amy, Joe, and I sat around the patio and talked the whole time.

The Liles’ come over to swim, including Apollo

There was a lot of giggling going on here.

Laugh and giggle time.

Robin came over to assist Mary in getting our summertime party invitations ready. She uses Zazzle and does a great job.

Mary and Robin worked on the invitations.

After everyone departed, Mary and I went to the pool and the swim spa.   All was well until we got a call with bad news. We headed to Jan’s house to share with her in person (news you did not want to message or call someone else).

After getting home, we started to watch a movie but gave up.

Celebration Time

Fact: The real name for a hashtag is an octothorpe. The ‘octo’ refers to the eight points in the symbol, but according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary the ‘thorpe’ part is a mystery.

We worked around the house today and at 5:00 PM we went to a celebration of Rebecca’s graduation.  Now she has a Master’s degree in childhood development.  I forgot to take pictures.

Looking good!

Work Work Work! PLay Play Play!!

Fact: The term “dog days of summer” comes from astronomy.  Lethargic, overheated pups didn’t inspire this phrase.  According to National Geographic, the “dog” in question is Sirius the Dog Star, which rises in the sky during late July as a part of the Greater Dog constellation.  To the Greeks and Romans, the “dog days” indicated the hottest time of the year, a period that was said to bring fever and other types of catastrophe.

As usual, we were up early, and we attacked the office.  Both of our desks were up to the top with paperwork!  Paperwork wouldn’t be so bad if it weren’t for all the paper.  And the work.

So we sat at the desks from 6:30 AM until noon.  My tuchus was tired.  I did get my yearly SoCal Edison bill which was $800; not too bad!

We had a great lunch, and then Mary went swimming as the pool was 80 degrees!  The 90+ degree weather is helpful!  Paul stayed under the patio cover and enjoyed a cool drink!  We plan to call Joe and Zachary and let them know the pool is open for business.

When I talked to Jow, I asked him, “If you don’t pay your exorcist, do you get repossessed?” He had no answer but promised to get back with about that.

It was quite enjoyable.

We cleaned up and readied for the Beach Boys concert this evening at the Santa Ana Elks Lodge.  I got my poodle skirt on, but Mary said that was too 1950s.

We had a load of fun with the gang.  The Beach Boys tribute band was excellent.  They played all the old songs and gave us some old memories of the 1950s and 1960s.

Our table kept getting bigger and bigger; we had eleven at a table for eight.   We played the “I was so poor growing up that _______________” game.  Everybody laughed and cried, sometimes at the same time.   I told everyone that when I was growing up, I was so poor that I could not even pay attention.  Vicky thought that was a hoot!

The gang after hot dogs and hamburgers; we were ready to exercise!

Hang on; Mary is sitting down and NOT dancing?  What is the meaning of this??

So pretty.

We laughed and giggled all night long.  Having such excellent friends makes the day.  We missed Irene, the Branders, Mike and Bridgette, and the Capps.  Iris called and said Wil came down with COVID-19, so they stayed home this evening.

OK, one more dance!

Just goofing around

The band played until 10:00 PM, but we “old farts” decided that 9:30 PM was our tipping point.  Then I had a thought, always something to worry about.  Blunt pencils are really pointless.

Our wonderful friends.

On the way out, I whispered to Bob, “Pollen is what happens when flowers can’t keep it in their plants.”

We are heading toward our first anniversary and second year together.

How two people have so much in common and enjoy each other’s company so much is truly amazing!

We got home at 10:00 PM and crashed.

Girls Night Out (It’s Thursday)

Fact: The Term “Working Lunch” Is Kind of an Oxymoron!  One of the most counterintuitive ways to undo a productive morning is to try to power through to the afternoon without a break.  Research from the University of California-Davis found that when we skip lunch and try to push on with thought-intensive tasks, we actually hinder our performance since not having lunch can exhaust our cognitive capacity.  Think of your growling stomach as a spokesperson for your brain, which badly needs a rest.  You won’t lose momentum, we promise.

The day began with us in the swim spa at 5:58 AM!  We listened to the roosters get up, gargle, and start their morning routine.  I remember last Easter morning  when the rooster was strutting around the hen house and came across a nest of eggs dyed every color of the rainbow. The rooster took one look at the colorful display, ran outside, and beat the heck out of the resident peacock.

We were ready to go at 10:00 AM, so we stopped by and saw Jan bringing her some goodies!

After a short visit, we went to The Boot Barn and returned my new western shirt; the darned thing lost a snap, and I only wore it once!  We fought the Boot Barn online computer until we gave up in utter frustration.  There ought to be a policy: do not let anyone over 50 stand in front of the computer.

I spotted a Hallicrafter S-94 Civic Patrol 30-50Mhz receiver on the way out.

I had one of these in the mid-1950s!  We could listen to police and other VHF frequencies.

Now we are off to the Santa Ana Elks Lodge for Girls Night Out.  Paul was a good boy and had a wonderful salad, and Mary ate grass also.  George talked to Colleen and they reconnected after George dumped his drink into the keyboard and everything shorted out.  POOF!

The gang showed up, and we had a ball!

We ran by the market before going home.

Returning home, we worked around the house until about 6:00 PM, when we watched TV.  It was a nice slow day.

Back In The Swing Of Things!

Fact: Did you know that July is National Ice Cream Month?  It’s the perfect time to indulge in the sweet treat, though you’d need a huge appetite to master the most giant scoop ever, which weighed a belly-busting 3,010 pounds.  Created by Kemps Dairy in Cedarburg, Wisconsin, as part of their 100th anniversary, the scoop stood 5’6″ high, stretched 6’2″ wide, and was made of around 733 containers of ice cream.  What flavor, you ask?  Strawberry, which means that it was a pretty pink and looked as good as it surely tasted!

The rain is gone, for now.  It was pretty heavy a couple of times around 3:00 AM.

We were up and cleaning the house early because it was time for our house cleaners to come, and we wanted to be neat!  This logic sometimes fails me?

I used to get bummed out when it rained; then I realized that it’s God’s way of washing off hippies. Mary went outside to make sure the doggy toys were out of the path of the rain.

Dancing in the rain?

We heard the storm coming when the iPhone went off and warned us of approaching lightning.  The iPhone started smoking and it flashed bright lights.

We had rain on and off all morning.

Today, after the cleaners depart, we will work on the new Hope Chest!  It needs a slight amount of work, and we will clean it with Mary’s super-secret German wood wax.

A little elbow grease, and it looked like new.

Did You Know?  Hope chest history dates back to a time when families exchanged property and goods.  The exact origins aren’t clear, but it’s believed that the hope chest provided the bride’s dowry items, such as any clothing and personal property, to help her begin her new life.  When designed primarily for a future wedding, there was a good chance that a young woman’s hope chest would contain treasured goods such as hand-embroidered linens and delicate pieces of clothing.

The rain was pretty hard mid-morning, and Scout enjoyed chasing the thunder off.

The rains came

It was raining, and he was out barking the thunder away; we both got wet bringing him inside.  He is a funny dog.

We stayed under the patio but first, we retrieved Scouts’ toys from the yard.  Mary recovered Moosey, his favorite toy, from drowning.

Moosey is saved!

We both have readers, Mary has a Nook, and I have a Kindle.  We read under the patio for a good hour, just listening to the rain.  Reading one book is like eating one potato chip; we usually have two books, each going simultaneously.

The hope chest was treated with oil, and the oil was left to soak into the wood.  You can read about the history of the company that made the cedar chest here.

We were amazed to understand young women today have NO idea what a Hope Chest is; we tried about ten times asking girls under thirty if they knew, and nine out of ten drew a blank!

The chest looks fantastic after almost 100 years.

The clouds were beautiful all afternoon.  We made some zucchini bread.  We used the enormous overgrown zucchini, and half of it made six mini-loaves of bread.  How does the zucchini bread court his sweetheart?  With lots of flours.

While working in the kitchen, we watched TV movies.  The first one was underway when I came in, so I decided to take a nap.  We also studied some recipe books we recently procured.

It was called  How Do You Know.  When everything she’s ever known is suddenly taken from her, Lisa (Reese Witherspoon) begins a fling with Matty (Owen Wilson), a major league baseball player and self-centered ladies’ man.  Before their relationship takes off, Lisa meets up with George (Paul Rudd), a straight-arrow businessman facing his own serious issues with his father (Jack Nicholson) and the law.  Just when everything seems to be falling apart, it doesn’t.

The second movie we watched was Red River from 1988.  Red River was a remake of the John Wayne classic of 1948.  Produced in 1988, it was not as good as the original but quite entertaining.

The sky was mesmerizing, with the images changing every few seconds.  The upper winds were quite wild this afternoon.

The clouds had a silver lining.

The subset was magnificent.  My favorite color is sunset; the sun had just set when I snapped the photo looking west.  At some point, I stopped seeing the sunset as the end of the day but, instead, the beginning of the night!

Watching the sunset is illuminating.

It was 8:08 PM and 82 degrees when this picture was snapped.

We watched another movie while we were going to sleep.  I turned off the TV at 11:00 PM and read some more; reading is much better than TV.

Christmas Is Six Months Away! It’s The Longest Day Of The Year!

Fact: The word “solstice” comes from the Latin words sol “Sun” and stitium “standing.” On the summer solstice, the Sun’s path stops advancing northward each day and appears to “stand” still in the sky before going back the other way.  On this day, the Sun rises farthest left on the horizon and sets at its rightmost possible spot.  Sunlight strikes places in your home that get illuminated at no other time.

We were up pretty early as Paul had a medical procedure at 11:30 in Los Alamitos.  We went to the fire pit for a while.  The old man could not have any food or drink, so Dr. Mary decided she would do the same.

The 11:30 AM procedure just took about thirty minutes.  Why was the surgeon screaming “Typhoid, Measles, Tetanus!” in the hospital hallway?  He liked to call the shots.

After the procedure, we went to Old Ranch for lunch.   We had a delightful time and stayed there until almost 4:00 PM.

I surprised Mary and arranged for a golf cart, and we drove the eighteen holes; she was amazed at how big Old Ranch was.  On the way out, we spotted Charlotte and asked her to have a drink with us when we returned.

The golfers visit the baby ducks.

On the way back to the clubhouse, we ran into Wayne (Bullwinkle) and Rocky.  They joined us for another drink after Charlotte departed!  Seeing them again was fun.  We sat for a good hour and recalled the past Old Ranch adventures.

It was a beautiful day!

We headed home about 4:15 PM after a great afternoon of recovering and meeting friends.

We both lay down for a nap and woke at about 8:00 PM.  I already want to take a nap tomorrow. I’m so good at sleeping I can do it with my eyes closed.

Dr. Mary checked me over and gave me the thumbs up!   We sat until 10:00 PM, looking at magazines and talking about “stuff.”  I am so grateful to have my best friend with me 24×7.

I remembered this quote, “A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies.  The man who never reads lives only one.” Oh, how true!

What shall we cook next?

We finally crashed about 10:30 PM and then I feel this “tap tap tap” on my ffrorehead.  MAry says, “Get up, it is raining”.  Sure enough, it was raining so Mary and I moved the BBQ under the patio cover and covered the chairs by the firepit.

I think that’s why I went to sleep so fast because we could hear the rain.

We Stayed Home!

Fact: Older Americans say having more time to spend with family is by far the best part about growing old.  Among those ages 65 and older, the two most common answers to an open-ended question on the benefits of aging were spending more time with family (28%) and spending time with grandchildren (25%).  The next most popular answer was financial security, cited by just 14% of respondents.

We stayed home today and puttered around the house.  Zachary, our grandson, came over for lunch now that he works only ten minutes away.  We told him to call and give us a few minutes’ notice, and we could whip up something.

Today we did burgers with a 15-bean soup thickened into a chili.  We did corn on the cob plus a salad from the garden and topped it off with homemade cornbread and coleslaw.

While ack was here, our window washer came by, and he spent about three hours doing all the windows; everyone looked brand new.

We watched three western movies and sat by the fire pit before crashing.

The Homesman is a 2014 Western historical drama film set in the 1850s Midwest and directed by Tommy Lee Jones. The screenplay by Jones, Kieran Fitzgerald, and Wesley Oliver is based on the 1988 novel of the same name by Glendon Swarthout. The film stars Jones and Hilary Swank and also features Meryl Streep, Grace Gummer, Miranda Otto, Hailee Steinfeld, John Lithgow, Jesse Plemons, and James Spader.

The film was selected to compete for the Palme d’Or in the main competition section at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival and received a North American limited release on November 14, 2014, by Roadside Attractions. The Homesman has received mostly positive reviews from critics. Rotten Tomatoes gave the film a rating average of 7.1/10.

The title refers to the task of taking immigrants back home, which was typically a man’s job.

Broken Trail is a 2006 Western television miniseries directed by Walter Hill and starring Robert Duvall and Thomas Haden Church.[1] Written by Alan Geoffrion, who also wrote the novel,[2] the story is about an aging cowboy and his nephew who transport 500 horses from Oregon to Wyoming to sell them to the British Army. Along the way, their simple horse drive is complicated when they rescue five Chinese girls from a slave trader, saving them from a life of prostitution and indentured servitude. Compelled to do the right thing, they take the girls with them as they continue their perilous trek across the frontier, followed by a vicious gang of killers sent by the whorehouse madam who originally paid for the girls.

Broken Trail weaves together two historical events: the British buying horses in the American West in the late 19th century and Chinese women being transported from the West Coast to the interior to serve as prostitutes. The movie was filmed on location in Calgary, Alberta.

Bone Tomahawk is a 2015 horror Western cannibal film written and directed by S. Craig Zahler. It stars Kurt Russell, Patrick Wilson, Matthew Fox, Richard Jenkins, Lili Simmons, Evan Jonigkeit, David Arquette, and Sid Haig and was produced by Jack Heller and Dallas Sonnier. It had its world premiere at the Fantastic Fest on October 1, 2015  and was given a limited release on October 23, 2015, by RLJ Entertainment. The film is about a small-town sheriff (Russell) who leads a posse into a desolate region to rescue three people who were abducted by a cannibalistic Native American clan. The film earned critical acclaim, with praise for Zahler’s screenplay and direction and the performances of the ensemble cast.

Father’s Day 2022

Fact: Father’s Day is a holiday of honoring fatherhood and paternal bonds, as well as the influence of fathers in society. In Catholic countries of Europe, it has been celebrated on March 19 as Saint Joseph’s Day since the Middle Ages.

I received two nice messages from my daughters.  The little messages  brought little tears to my eyes.

From Robin (My most mature)

I am proud of my girls!

From Colleen (My youngest)

We just worked around the house getting everything put away after our trip.  At 1:30 PM we headed to the Elks lodge to celebrate.

See the details.

Remember, Think positively; Exercise daily; Eat Healthily; Work Hard; Stay strong; Worry less; Dance more; Love often.

We just got in from riding the range!

When you dance, you can enjoy the luxury of being yourself.

Family is a wonderful thing!

We know several country dances and did them well.

Taking my bride out for a mosy around the dance floor!

Robin did some magic with her camera; it looks good!

Just us!

We headed home, rounded up the doggy (often referred to as Scout), and hit the hot tub to soothe the saddle sores.

We Are Home; Into The Hot Tub!

We were pretty tired and began the process of unloading everything.  Mary worked in the other room and I finished off the website.  Taking the laptop with us really worked nicely.

At the end of the day, all the wash was done and everything was “back to normal”, whatever that is.  We visited Jan before crashing.

Take a comic view of the trip!

We had an absolute ball!

Father’s Day tomorrow.

See The Details

We were invited to Joe’s in-laws, Michele and Tony.  We had a blast just sitting and talking.

Celebrating a day early.

Joe and Amy plus the varmits made the day special!

Joe has an odd sense of humor, I do not know where he gets it!

Poor Amy, she knows where joe got it.

Paul gets “the Amy look!”

We had a great meal and were as stuffed as ticks when we were done.

We love family and Joe’s in-laws are just amazing people!

We headed for home around 9:00 PM and crashed.  We are still tired from the trip.

Day 9 – Driving Home

We had an excellent breakfast in Solvang, and after breakfast, we went shopping. No use rushing into LA traffic. We saw Robin this morning as she stayed in the house, and the security cameras worked well. Great party, Robin!

Almost due East today.

Baby loves Danish pancakes.

I needed a drink!

Day 8 – Speaking Danish In Solvang

We made it over the GG Bridge just after rush hour. We meandered through downtown SF seeing all the homeless dopers living on the streets; just like in LA. We chose NOT to stop as it did not look all that safe, even with Scout who would probably refuse to bite them the way they smelled.

See the details of Day 8.

Getting ten pounds of ^%%#^ into a five-pound bag.

We had a nice dinner in Solvang at an Italian place next to our hotel.

We crashed, it was a long day! Mary decided to go to the hot tub. I stayed behind but I did hear the police when they came to arrest her.

I paid the bail and got her home around midnight.

Day 7 – Destination Santa Rosa

An easy five hour drive we thought. We did not think we would be at the “Trees Of Mystery” for two hours! We also forgot Hwy-101 is a winding highway. We departed Crescent City at 9:30 Am and got to Santa Rosa at 7:30 PM, a ten-hour trip! But, listen to the story.

See the details of Day 7.

It took us the entire day because we stopped at the Trees of Mystery and the Avenue of the Giants.

The grizzly got our attention

Scout loved all the attention he got while walking the trails.

Scout and Paul needed an emergency stop!

Scout is definitely a city dog.

Day 6 – Hello Crescent City

We decided to go to Salem via I-5 and then turn west to go along Highway 1 from Newport to Crescent City because we wanted to save some time and get into our hotel a little early; before nightfall.

We got cleaned up early and departed about 9:30 AM after a great cup of coffee. We visited with Lanette and Scout, The Wonder Dog, said his goodbyes.

See the details of Day 6.

Saying goodbye was not easy but we will be back soon!

Mary say a place to shop for wood so we screeched into the empty parking lot and looked around.

We are just having so much fun!

Lunch on the water front.

Lunch was fantastic.

We worked our way to crescent city.

We stopped in Florence Oregon for lunch.  My cousin Dave Mall lived here for quite a while.

Day 5 – Visiting Oregon City & Old Friends

We were up and going early today. Lanette was taking her hubby to the hospital for an operation so we cleaned up and when Lanette returned, we hit the road! We had an amazing docent giving us a tour of the town albeit in a big rainstorm. It is wonderful to see Mary meet up with old friends again

See the details of Day 5.

A walk in the park. Bringing back old memories.

We found a real Mexican restaurant in Oregon.  The food was amazing and spicy!

A little kiss perhaps.

Lanette joined us with Mary’s friends Ty and Steve.  We laughed aand giggled for a long time.

Lunch with friends.

We had the afternoon available and decided to visit the Spruce Goose that was in Oregon.  It was amazing.

Flirting with the old timers!

Wow!

It was a rainy morning, a surprise, but we managed. Scout went out about 6:00 AM and could not figure out what the wet stuff was about!

The ol’ Grey Ghost did fine getting 28 MPG on the trip!

See the details of Day 4.

Mary visited Rose, Dianne’s mother.

We met Mary’s cousin and visited their home for a bit.  Mary was given her real grandmother’s hope chest and we carefully put it in the back of the van.

We had a wonderful lunch and shared more stories.

We had a super visit with new family members.

We arrived in Oregon City and met with Mary’s dear friend Lanette.  They were camp counselors back in the late 1960s.  Lanette’s parents were wonderful people and assisted Mary when her husband departed on Christmas Day 1995.  They stayed and assisted for almost two months.

We stayed two nights and had a wonderful time.

Day 3 – Visiting In Medford and The Reunion.

We visited Cyndy (Zaitz) this morning!  Cyndy decided a year ago to move up where the traffic and pollution were nil and she is enjoying it.

We met up at the Red Beet in Talent, Oregon. She was a few minutes away from us; we could NOT pass up the opportunity!

See the details for Day 3.

Great visit!

Off to the reunion.

Party time

We found a perfect spot for the afternoon.

We arrived an hour early and got wonderful seats.

The weather was perfect.  Mary made the rounds and remember some of the folks.

Loads of people considering it was 50 years ago!

Surprise; Mary got a real dinner this evening.

Surprise after-party dinner at Porters Restaurant.

Day 2 – Arriving In Medford

5:00 AM and “the nose” comes to visit, “Daddy, I gotta go outside”. I put on the bare minimum  (which was my sequined thong) and out we went. After thirty minutes of sniffing, he found the perfect spot. It was so perfect I thought about using it also but the front desk was too close!   Yes, Scout joined us on the trip!

See the details for Day 2.

Mt. Shasta lookout point.

We drove around Medford looking at Mary’s memories.

Mary’s first home.

We met up with Sally and David.  Sally was MAry’s High School best friend.  Dinner was quite delightful. David and I talked the whole time leaving the girls, Sally and Mary, to palaver about years gone by. Great fun!

Friends for over fifty years!
