May Day!

Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

A quick look at the calendar revealed today was May 1st, Mayday!  The tradition began about 2,000 years ago.  The significance of the maypole dance is to celebrate or encourage fertility.  The tree or pole can be considered a phallic or masculine symbol, while the flowers and ribbons can be considered beautiful and feminine symbols.  The dance represents physical health.

I am seriously considering putting up a maypole in the front yard, but somehow, I think the boss will veto my brilliant idea!

I vividly remember the Maypole at Shenandoah Elementary School in the 1950s!

Thursday was also fairly busy.  We were up and moving early and did some chores around the house.  We’re ready to go to Girls’ Night Out, and on the way, we stopped by CVS, our home away from home.

Note to Self: Buy stock in CVS since we visit so often!!

Returning home, we visited the hollyhocks.  Hollyhocks are edible and can be used in various culinary applications, including tea, salads, and even stuffing.  The roots, leaves, and blossoms can all be consumed, offering a unique flavor profile.

Our Hollyhocks are doing amazing in the front yard!!

Edible Parts and Uses:

Tea: Hollyhock leaves and flowers can be used to make tea, either by boiling the dried or fresh leaves and flowers or by creating a cold infusion.

Salads: The leaves and flowers can be added to salads as garnishes or for a delicate flavor.

Stuffing: Hollyhock leaves can be used in place of grape leaves for stuffing, and they can be prepared by soaking in brine to mimic the flavor of preserved grape leaves.

Sautéed: Hollyhock leaves can be sautéed and added to salads or other dishes.

Root: The roots can be used in soups and other dishes or boiled and used to make tea.

We went to Girls Night Out at the Lodge and met up with the gang.  Sydney and Gail joined us today, and we spent some time afterward with Bill Capps, making sure he was ready for his facial!

Returning home, we again stopped by CVS to get the new heart meds.  What does Entresto do for the heart?  Entresto helps the heart pump blood more effectively by enhancing beneficial peptides and blocking harmful hormones.  This improves cardiac output and reduces the symptoms of heart failure, such as shortness of breath and fatigue.

On the bright side, my weight is not 197 pounds and dropping with a goal of 190 in the next couple of weeks!

We took the trash cans out and then got ready to go to La Habra and have dinner with Zachary, Becca, Lilly, and Remington at The Olive Garden.  We had a super dinner and caught up on all their activities.  The great-grandkids are growing up so fast.  Miss Lilly is a young lady, and Remington is a kick in the pants!

We returned home a little before dark and went VFR to the TV room to watch three more episodes of The Black List.  We are on Season two, episode five.  It’s definitely a high-quality series.  There is some great action and lots of other factors that make it one of the best TV series —it provides twists and thrilling edge-of-your-seat material that I believe differentiate it from your typical action drama.  I did not tell Mary that there are 218 episodes and we are on 25 so far!

We crashed at 10:00 pm after having a bowl of strawberries!
