While most of the south-land was suffering with 100 degree temperatures (122 in Palm Springs), we stayed relatively cool at 86 because we are so near the ocean! Sue went to the hair dresser and Paul did some garden shopping at Southcoast Supply while waiting for her.
When we got home, Paul headed for the front yard to do some much needed cleanup under the fruit trees and chop the artichokes down to the ground so they can grow again!
Paul “stumped” the artichoke plants by cutting the stalk out just below ground level using a stalk knife when new bud-bearing stalks appear. He mulched the plant with leaves, compost and straw and will uncover it in early spring. This practice also stimulates the development of new bud-bearing shoots. Sometimes we get another crop during the fall depending upon the weather.
Late in the afternoon we went to Old Ranch and had a drink before going to the Garden Grove Elks Lodge to dine and dance. Paul, attempting to loose weight, had 1/3 rd of his salmon dinner and took the remainder home. Sue took the baked potato home so we will have three meals out of one!
Sue can’t eat salmon and Paul grew up hardly ever eating fish but recently, past 20 years, Paul has fallen in love with fish! It might be working as Paul’s eyesight is 20-20 and 20-25 as of last week, the blood work seems to be that of a 40 year old, and most everything else is good. What was Paul saying?
Our Filipino friends were there tonight celebrating one of their folks getting out of the hospital with a replaced knee. We bought the table three bottles of champagne and enjoyed their celebration cake and cookies. Nice folks, good friends, and fun to be around!
We got home about 11:00 PM and watched some Frasier and more and more and finally hit the sack about 1:15 AM. The last few episodes were particularly funny!
