Out With Friends

Today, we are back amongst the living! We were up bright and early and headed to the backyard before it got hot.  We must recover all the patio furniture and get ready for the equipmemt folks picking up the party supplies; tables, chairs, dance floor, chaffing dishes, etc.

We put away the party supplies and transferred them from our breakfast table into the garage.   It was approaching 11:00 am and time to get cleaned up for our visit to the doctor and then Laguna Beach.

The hand doctor, Dr. Rose, said it would be good to reschedule Paul’s surgery because a) the stitches on the hand were too close to where he had to operate, and b) the cough was too bad to go under anesthesia; we have a date in October to do the surgery.

From there, we went down the coast for a peaceful drive to Laguna for the Pageant of the Masters.  One of the most unique productions in the world, the Pageant of the Masters, re-creates famous works of art. The 2024 theme is “À La Mode: The Art of Fashion.

The Theme is “Fashion” this year.

We got to Laguna about 2:00 pm, several hours too early, so we had lunch at the Lumberyard and then strolled the eclectic shops located in the village.  The collectibles are always interesting.  The 1955 Cadillac was exactly as I remembered from childhood.   We could never afford something like that, but it was fun to look at!

The yellow vehicle was a VW Bus.

Old goodies are our favorite.

Every Other storefront was an exciting restaurant. We almost passed up the bug, but Mary had to stop and practice talking in “Bug”, one of her many languages.  Usually, when she does bug, it sounds like a loud scream, but this afternoon, it was a low mumble, and they had quite a conversation.

The Gold Bug (Mary is on the right).

We ran into Vicky and the gang, and Vicky had forgotten her hard candy, a tradition for the past twenty years. We told Vicky not to worry; we would find something on our walk, and we did.

The store was called “The Candy Baron.” This store reminded me of my childhood. Candy was sold by weight, and there was a large selection of hard-to-find candies.

Oh my, a dentist’s delight!

We made several selections and returned the entire bag to Vicky so no one would know of her forepaw!

We stopped at an old-fashioned candy store.

These candy bars were known for their dental acuity; one bite, one chew, and a filling was sure to pop out!

Abba-Zabba, the filling remover!

Did You Know? According to the Candy Wrapper Museum, the first Abba Zaba bars were manufactured in 1922 by Colby and McDermott. Before Annabelle Candy Co. started manufacturing Abba-Zaba, the packaging featured racist imagery; Annabelle Candy Co. will only say that the wrapper has been the same for as long as they have manufactured the candy. The Cardinet Candy Co. later manufactured the bar along with the U-No Bar. Annabelle Candy purchased the Cardinet Candy Co. in 1978. Annabelle now manufactures both candy bars in addition to others.

Racist? Someone is a little over sensitive! – Early Abba-Zaba wrappers from Colby & McDermott depict what appear to be African tribesmen in a jungle, sitting beside a taffy tree. And while this racially taboo packaging would never fly today, it didn’t do the brand any damage when the candy first came out.

We passed by the City Hall, and we did a recall to “The Birds.” Mary scared them off!  Remember: Melanie Daniels (Tippi Hedren) meets Mitch Brenner (Rod Taylor) in a San Francisco pet store and decides to follow him home. She brings with her the gift of two love birds and they strike up a romance. One day birds start attacking children at Mitch’s sisters party. A huge assault starts on the town by attacking birds.

Attack of the birds.

We met everyone inside the theater grounds and walked around to look at the strange artwork. Some were quite interesting, but others needed to be more specific about why anyone would want to buy them.

We were in the sixth row of the theater in a perfect location.  Vicky has had these seats for years, and they improve yearly.

Let the show go on!

There were thirteen of us this evening.

Donna took the picture.

At the show’s end, we decided to wait until traffic died down before facing the traffic jam.

11:00 pm, time to go.

We visited with Nancy and Yolie for a while as people wandered out of the theater and to their cars.

Nancy & Yopie joined in this evening.

Irene visited this evening, and she is almost over her Saturday night party and the “Could Of Beens”!

Irene came along to see the show.

We had a perfect parking spot and whizzed right out onto Highway 133, which leads to the 5, the 55, and home. We made it in twenty-one minutes without speeding.

We Is Pooped Out!

Today we planned zip, nada, zero!  We are going to relax.  We went to lunch with Chuck and Lisa at the Orange Circle and then headed home for a well deserved nap!

We discussed the party and decided it was a total success and it was good so see everyone again!

At 8:00 pm we went into the swimming pool and soaked for an hour before having a glass of wine and a couple of marshmallows around the campfire.

Happy Birthday Irene!!!

Join The Fun On Our Website

The day began with “Oh No!  I left the sprinklers on!!!”  Lying in bed, I heard water and looked outside; the table and chairs were getting a bath.  It’s 5:00 am, so I figured out everyone would be asleep. Who in their right mind is awake at that ungodly hour? Oh, wait… me!  My birthday suit and I scooted through the house with my iPhone in hand to shut off the water.

In the final analysis, I turned off the sprinklers for August 2nd, not the 3rd, so the system worked flawlessly; we had an operator error!

We got to work early, first by drying off the dance floor!

Oops!

We followed that by setting up various furniture and awaiting the arrival of the Armstrong Entertainment Group; that’s when everything got busy!

Ready Set Go!

Chuck was ready to go.  The BBQ was smokin’ hot, and potatoes were prepared for the potato bar.  Chuck prepared about fifteen pounds of filet mignon as an appetizer for the guests!  Delicious!

T-3 hours!

The lady of the hour has arrived, looking like royalty in her full purple regalia! She even has a crown and sash to complete the look. We were warned not to have too much fun, but I don’t think anyone can resist when she’s dressed like that!

Iren arrives!

“The best is yet to be.” – Robert Browning

History was on display with a wide collection of photos that Maria had collected.

Picture date back 90 years!

Meanwhile, upstairs, they’re attempting to train the untrainable for the skit. We can’t wait to see how that turns out!

It does not look good.

We danced when Steve showed up as we were going to be busy all afternoon and evening doing host/hostess chores.  There is nothing like a hot cha cha on a 90 degree afternoon!

We love to waltz.

Dinner was served, and the food disappeared as if by magic—300 pounds of filet mignon gone in a flash!  We had something new to us, a “potato bar” which was mashed potatoes and a choice of three toppings; broccoli & cheese, chicken pot pie, or pot roast!

Fifty-plus folks are celebrating today!

It’s time for some serious entertainment!!  Irene is asking herself, “What am I doing here???”

“The wrinkles on our faces are the roadmap of our lives.” – Anonymous

In the seat of honor!

The entertainment leaves the building (they probably should have stayed inside!)

Here goes nothing!

Whoever says “Ready Set” gets fired! Remember, we are grownups with an average age of eighty years who watch cheerleaders with great interest!  We marched out quietly so Irene would not see us and that was hard to do since some of us are pretty clumsy, not mentioning any names!

We are happy we put a seatbelt on Irene because she almost fell out of the chair laughing at our wicked ways!  We thought about wearing thongs underneath but alas, we had some childrens in the audience so it would not have been appropriate!

“Who brought the coin cups for the collections?”

The party went on well into the wee hours.

We are having fun with family!

We wrapped things up around 10:00 pm and began the cleanup process but with the Armstrong Gang, the cleanup was easy and quick.  The place looked better after the party was over.

Oh my! Should we warn the neighbors?

T-1 We Are At A Fever Pitch

Well, Pilgrim, that is not going to happen!

We kicked off the day with a game of hide-and-seek. Chuck and Lisa, our incredible friends and caterers, decided to explore the garden to see what we could pick on the event day. Their excitement was so contagious that the garden plants played hide-and-seek, too!

We decided there would be tomatoes in something, even the cocktails.

We will see a tomato salad shortly.

The suppliers came at noon and set everything up in about two hours! We expected about 60 people for the shindig and needed a dance floor and overhead lighting. Steve Dudek is coming to play for us.

This party is for Irene, and she made the guest list, which includes some folks from Wisconsin who are flying in for the weekend.

The party dance floor, tables, and chairs arrived at noon.

The business end of the setup is underway!  This is where “the skit of the century” will be performed, led by Super Jim and hopefully followed by the rest of us?!

Fun in the sun!

On the patio, Bob is finishing the kitchen ceiling and putting the final touches on the new handrails. Chuck is checking everything out, including the BBQ area and the meal setups.

Bob puts the finishing touches on the kitchen and handrails.

Thank goodness for Scout, The Wonder Dog, who provides the adult supervision.  He knows for sure the party is just for him and that everyone will pet him and tell him how pretty he is!

Our supervisor in action.

We are 99% set up, and we have tested the lights and plug-ins for Steve’s instruments, so we are good to go!

Everything is almost set up.

The bar is set up, but with this group, it will not be busy!  We talk about drinking, but alas, at our age, one sniff of a cork and we are in la la land!

Jan’s bar is at the ready (Too bad Jan refuses to leave her house)

Maria (Irene’s daughter), Robin, and Vicky continue their secret plans and set up the table decorations.  Oh my, perhaps we should notify the local police department.

At 2:00 pm, the workers show up for table decorations and last-minute coordination.

We needed fresh citrus for the bar, so the bartender’s long arm went to work. Jim, our neighbor, told us to pick the oranges anytime. It seems like Jim’s oranges were the talk of the town! I hope he won’t start charging us for them, or we’ll have to squeeze every last drop out of our budget!

Will the bar have fresh citrus, duh?

Done! It’s time to relax. Chuck, Lisa, and Robin headed to a restaurant. Mary and I rested and finally decided to go to In’ N’ Out for a burger!

Let’s stop and eat.

We all got home after dark, and we were tired.  I sat out by the firepit (without the fire one), and finally, around 10:00 pm, Mary wandered out and retrieved me.

T-2; We Are Ready!!

Amen!!

We were up and going because we only had two days until the birthday! Irene is going to be ninety years old! It’s fantastic because she has the energy of a twenty-year-old and the wisdom of a thousand-year-old wizard. It’s like she’s Benjamin Button-ing in reverse!

So, in 1934, what was going on???

We will see if Ireen remembers!

We will be celebrating Irene’s 90th birthday, and through the magic of AI, here she is in 1941.

In color!!

Irene looks excellent in the original B&W

I woke up a little late, and when I rolled over, the bed was empty. I got dressed and then heard a bone-chilling scream… “Paul Paul Paul Help!!!”  I thought the worst when I zipped through the house at 845 miles per hour.  I arrived at the source of the screaming, and there was Mary, terrified of Fuzzy-Wuzzie.

Blood-curdling yell all for a puzzy-wuzzy!

Carlos, our dear gardener, came a day and an extra hour early to finish some planting we had to do.    Paul’s hand is living its dream as a professional mummy impersonator, complete with its own bandage wardrobe. No strenuous activities for you, buddy!

We planted new flowers for the party!

We were off to the Elks Lodge, where Chuck and Lisa were going to join us for lunch with the gang. They took an Uber from the airport, and we took our van! It all worked out.

Robin and Lisa caught up on things!

Ed and Betty joined in on the fun today.  Ed got his practice session in on the skit.

Ed will look great in cheerleader shorts!

The mastermind at work!  Given a little more time, we have a Broadway production on our hands!

What will she think of next??

Mary exchanged our veggies for a bag of apples from George!

More ideas were flowing about Saturday’s party!

Our new handrails were installed, and they look and work great!  No more falling!

Bob did a magnificent job!

When we returned home, Chuck and Lisa took off for an appointment in Newport after unloading their baggage. We decided to go out for dinner, so we met them at our Italian restaurant near the traffic circle.

By the time we got home, we were all pooped out and hit the sack early.  Tomorrow is going to be a long day!

Taking Care Of Business

Oh boy, did I get into trouble!!

It’s hump day, and we took it easy again.  Because of the upcoming party, we worked around the house, ensuring it looked like ordinary people lived inside (and outside).

Again, we stayed home except for a quick visit to Home Depot for some veggies to fill in the blank spaces we made and to get some meds for my cold.  Other than that, we stayed close to home.

We watched the last episode of “Suits” and were happy that Donna finally married the boss!

I Was A Cut Up!

We were up at the crack of dawn, summoning all our zombie powers to get ready for an early morning expedition to Long Beach for a date with the doctor at the ungodly hour of 8:00 am.

After our showers, we went to the garden and picked some goodies for our doctor, hoping this would convince him to double the painkiller strength.

I had a squamous-cell cancer located adjacent to my knuckle, and it had to go!

The doctor popped in, we chatted about his recent vacations, and then he hit me with a local anesthesia, and the pain was gone.  My hand was right before me, and I watched with interest his use of the scalpel to remove tissue I had taken years to grow.

Front row seat!

I could hear the blade swishing in the air as he performed his famous GinSu knife procedure, which he learned on the Home Shopping Network.

I will rush home and weigh myself, hoping he took ten pounds!

We wrapped it up good and admonished me:  1) keep it clean, and 2) make sure you get a chocolate bon-bon on the hour every hour for the next two days!  He prescribed item number two (if Mary did not remember)!

Oh, the pain!!!!!

We thought we were getting close to the Elks, so we stopped for lunch and shared a turkey sandwich. I guess we took the whole ‘getting close to nature’ thing a bit too literally!

I had ordered a bowl of chili, but I was too full, so we gave it to our new bar buddy.

As at all Elks Lodges, we have met some really great people who are always friendly and ready to share!

We finally made it home, and I treated my cold like a boss with an arsenal of spicy pills and magical potions. My cold didn’t stand a chance! It was like my nose was hosting a fiery party, and only the snot was invited. On the bright side, I was feeling a lot better!!

We Collapsed!

Today we were as active as a pair of snoozing sloths! We roamed the house like aimless wanderers and decided to skip the gym because we were both in a sorry state. It was a slug kind of day, but at least we slithered through it together!

We watched TV and laste in the afternoon, soaked in the 90 degree swimming pool.

It was a beautiful evening.

We crashed about 9:30 pm hoping tomorrow would be a better day!

Happy Anniversary!

It was four years ago today that Mary and I had our first “date”—or, as I like to call it, the quarter-century in the making. We finally upgraded from dance friends to potential lovebirds, leaving everyone in the Starlighters Dance Club wondering, “What’s happening with those two?”

It is also our third wedding anniversary, as we were married one year to the day of our first get-together.

Both events took place at Patty’s Place in Seal Beach, so, you guessed it, we are recreating that event this afternoon with our friends.

To top it off, it is our daughter’s birthday! Colleen turns ## today (the number is hidden to protect the innocent!).

Happy Birthday, dear daughter!

We called Colleen and sang her Happy Birthday. She was out with her family celebrating.

We worked in the garden for a few hours, making the first pass. The grapes went wild during the last two weeks, and we could only get around the garden beds once we filled a 100-gallon trash can with grape clippings.

The garden went wild while we were gone!

Mary surveyed the garden and decided what to do first. We picked today’s lunch from the garden and two boxes of veggies for Dianne.

The garden could be more pretty this time of year; the foliage is browning, and the branches get scraggly, but the plants are still producing.  We pulled the Swiss chard and trimmed the basil, and I unwrapped the squash as it was big enough that the bunnies would not do any damage.

It is 6:30 am, and we are already working.

The overhead trellises were loaded with more beans than a Mr. Bean movie, and the tomatoes were as eager to ripen as kids waiting for the ice cream truck!

When the sun comes out, we huddle under the trellises like vampires, avoiding a sunburn. Who knew gardening could be so dramatic?

Finally, the berry patch kicks in with a multitudinous collection of various berries.  The blackberries are the size of a thumb.  One must be careful, for if you bite into the berry, the juice can squirt. They are so juicy!

Need we say more?

It began to warm up around noon, so we returned to the house and finished washing our trip clothes. Scout, the Wonder Dog, had his favorite toy (Moosie)  and watched us empty the suitcases and make many trips to the laundry.  Scout has had that toy since he was rescued by Mary years ago.  Besides being a little worn, he never destroys his toys; Scout is an excellent baby!

We stayed glued to us all day long.

We sat in the breakfast room and folded the clothes while we watched “Suits.”  At 2:00 pm, we stopped, hit the showers, and readied everything for a 3:15 pm departure for Dianne’s to drop off the veggies and hopefully see David and proceed to Patty’s Place in Seal Beach.

I was rocking a majestic beard four years ago when Mary and I had our first dinner together. Looking back, I’m not sure if she fell in love with me or my beard that night!

Did You Know? George Francis “Gabby” Hayes was an American radio, film, and television actor. He was best known for numerous appearances in Western movies as the colorful sidekick to the leading man. Hayes was born the third of seven children in Wellsville, New York, and did not come from a cowboy background.

The table behind us is where we had our first “date.”

Three years ago, we were married at Patty’s Place!

We are enjoying life together! All I need is about seventeen years!

Jim’s beard looks excellent; I have a few more months to fill in the blank spots.

The adult supervision was kept busy this evening.

Robin and Bob came from Corona to be with us this evening.  We are fortunate to have such great kids who care about us and share.

Robin and Bob had a steak night.

Quick, Mary, before anyone notices. Everybody saw us, and I could not help myself but squeal with delight.  I had expected her to call me Gabby Hayes, but she controlled herself.

Smooooooooooch!

Donna makes her selection from the brand-new menus! Irene sees all the action from her perch at the center of the table.

Bob and Donna joined us.

Patty’s steaks are outstanding. Mary and I had the filet mignons, which were terrific, as expected.

Steak! We are talking great steaks!

We got Vicky so tickled she lit up like a Christmas tree!  We all belly laughed,  burst into laughter, cackled, chortled, chuckled, hee-hawed,  and nearly died laughing at the banter going back and forth across the table.

Someone gots the giggles.

We all wished Colleen and Mark could have been here, but they were with their family celebrating Colleen’s birthday, which was 3,000 miles away!

I love those kids.

Chip shots were flowing this evening.  Robin and Mary seem to be joined at the hip!

Ladies!

We all teased Irene about her upcoming surprise party on the 3rd of August at Casa Valencia.   Mary and I have a lot of work to do to get ready, but the real effort is being done by Chuck and Lisa, who are flying out from North Carolina to cater the shindig.

Auntie Irene is always a joy!

Too bad we had to leave, but we had a 30-minute drive home.

Everyone was heading home.

We only made it part of the way. Before heading home, we stopped at the local pub for a glass of wine and talked to the bartender, who was there alone.

The evening was beautiful, and family and friends surrounded us. May we be doing this twenty years from now!!

Day 14 1/2 – Disembarking And Flying Home!

Love was in the air!

Finally, at 6:30 am, we got up and began the final packing activities: our carry-ons. It’s like trying to fit 15 pounds of, you know what, into a five-pound bag. After some struggle, a little force, a few hydraulic tools, and the ability to bend matter with my mind (if only), I finally managed to zip it up. It’s good that TSA didn’t require us to open the bag!

We had breakfast in the cabin and then to the concierge, who took us down to the debarking (I think of Scout every time I type that word!) area via the crew elevator.

We went through the lines without a hitch, and it was easy because we had our suitcases sent directly to the airplane, so we did not have to manhandle all eleven of Mary’s suitcases/steamer trunks.

It was a short ride to the airport!

At the airport, we had the most epic lunch with the kids. We departed like synchronized swimmers, except with luggage. It was like the grand finale of our trip, complete with a recap over sandwiches. We should start rating airport lunches; I give this one five out of five stars!

We flew to Charlotte and then changed airplanes with only a few minutes to spare. The flights were uneventful except during takeoff when Paul made airplane sounds (jet airplanes).

How she can look so good after seven hours of flying in a hollow tube is beyond me!

Always a smile!

We arrived at John Wayne at 8:15 p.m., and our daughter Robin was waiting for us. We loaded up and headed home! Robin had plans for tomorrow morning, so she went home.

Mary texted the kids to let them know we were home safe. She also added, “No need to send out the search party this time!”

Scout required formal introductions before going out with Daddy to prepare for bed!

Wow, what a trip! We kissed, and then both of us went out like a light! Love really is exhausting!
