It was 51 degrees outside, but we walked the garden anyway. As we approached the south-forty, I heard a faint voice saying something. We both listened carefully, and it turned out to be the ceramic deer. His name is Headlights!
It seemed the other day Mary was planting in that area, and when she found a rock, she would toss it to the back fence. She was moving around and lost track of where she was throwing the stones.
She launched a big rock directly at Headlights, our ceramic deer, and busted off his antler. He was no longer horny! I heard him scream, but my fluency in Deer is a little rusty, plus I should not repeat his caterwauling in a public forum.
With great surgical skill, I performed a complex antler attachment operation using the latest in super-glue technology and returned Headlights to his previous condition,
We went to PT, where the therapist worked on Mary’s throwing arm thanks to the call Headlights made from the garden phone. One of her new exercises is to throw one hundred rocks at a target on the wall well away from where Headlights normally sits.
After returning home, we headed for the Elks to have lunch with Bill and Bob. Alas, both were engrossed in other non-lunch activities, so we had lunch by ourselves.
We took a picture of Mary’s new pride and joy, the vertical garden. What are the four advantages of vertical farms? The advantages are numerous: higher productivity in a much smaller area; shorter growing times; lower water use; fresh produce is grown much closer to where it’s eaten;
We went by Home Depot after lunch and got some amendments. Out in the open was a bevy of Red Maples.
Did You Know? The Red Maple tree is a famous deciduous tree (which means it loses its leaves in autumn every year) in the United States.
In some places, it is also called scarlet maple or swamp maple. These trees look gorgeous, but they are also pretty useful.
The sap from the tree is often used to make maple syrup, a popular breakfast item in the US.
We were in the Silver Fox, so we decided to go home and bring back the Grey Ghost as it would accommodate the trees.
Dr. Mary scoured the offerings and selected not one but two of these beauties. She has always wanted a red Maple because they grew wild in Oregon, where she was born. Few people know that red maple foliage can also turn yellow or orange in the fall. Red maples are fast-growing trees that usually reach 60 to 90 feet (18 to 27 meters) in height. The largest ones can grow more than 120 feet (36.5 meters) tall.
Thanks to the van, we got them home and are now deciding where they should go. There are many symbols of Japanese red maple trees, such as abundant blessings, peace, beauty, patience, survival, the arrival of autumn, and so on. It is common to see Japanese people plant maple trees in their houses to bring luck and add good value to their homes by believing in red maple trees’ spiritual meaning.
I knew we should not have had Japanese Stir Fry last night!
It was cold and dreary, so we did not plant them but set them in the front yard so we could see how they might look. They will be great as long as they do not get 100 feet tall!
We watered our vertical garden and checked out each compartment; everyone was damp, so the watering scheme worked! I had to ask Mary, “Who carries out operations in water?” She looked a little puzzled by my particular question! I had to answer, “A sturgeon.”
On our way home, Mary said it was time for a pedicure. I did not even know my pedi was sick!
Before we unloaded the Grey Ghost, we examined the front yard and found the tulips were in full bloom.
Did You Know? Red tulips are a favorite among the romantic type. Their deep red hues evoke feelings of passion, love, and lust — making them an especially popular choice for new, younger couples. They can also mean “believe me” or “my feelings are true.” So, the next time you’re trying to woo the person you admire, send them an alluring bouquet of red tulips.
It was cold, so we turned on the fireplace and watched a movie. Mary scampered around the kitchen and made another fantastic dinner from our garden. She picked more sweetpeas from the garden and decorated the table.
Sweet peas are native to Sicily, Cyprus, and Southern Italy. A Sicilian monk is said to have sent the first sweet pea seeds to England in the 17th century. They became popular in the late-Victorian era after being cultivated by Henry Eckford.
Dinner be served. Low in calories but high in protein, every fat man’s dream!
We had another movie before crashing called “Inside Man.” Inside Man is a 2006 American crime thriller directed by Spike Lee and written by Russell Gewirtz. It centers on an elaborate bank heist on Wall Street over 24 hours. The film stars Denzel Washington as Detective Keith Frazier, the NYPD’s hostage negotiator, Clive Owen as Dalton Russell, the mastermind who orchestrates the heist, and Jodie Foster as Madeleine White, a Manhattan power broker who becomes involved at the request of the bank’s founder Arthur Case (Christopher Plummer) to keep something in his safe deposit box protected from the robbers.
We conked out about 9:30 pm and did not try to watch TV.
