Return To “Normal”

Fact: Japan consists of 6,852 islands. The islands were originally attached to the eastern coast of Asia, until tectonic activity caused them to split off, creating the Sea of Japan around 15 million years ago.

The kids departed early and went to Vista to visit Jon’s dad.  We worked around the house and rested.  We remembered we wanted to try Japanese food for dinner so we made reservations at the Hibachi Steak House and asked Dianne and David to join us.  We had great fun!

We made reservations for the Tappan area. Most people agree that teppanyaki was first introduced by Japanese chefs as a grilling style in the U.S. Teppan translates as iron plate, and yaki translates as pan-fried or grilled. Teppanyaki grills are found in many Japanese restaurants as long, flat grills where guests are seated.

Getting ready for the main course!

The evening was made special by Dianne and David joining the meal!  David is originally from New Hampshire so he and the kids have a lot in common!

Dianne and David joined us.

We enjoyed our guests! Mary liked the volcano so we will have to try it at home!  As soon as the big garden gets in and we have a load of large white onions growing, we sill begin practicing.

We were having a load of fun!

The flat, hot cooking surface is key to the flavorful preparation of Teppanyaki dishes. … Unlike a typical restaurant meal, which often cools as it is brought to the table, the teppanyaki grill allows for every bite of your meal to be hot and fresh, as you eat while the chef works by your side on his hot cooking surface.

When do Japanese men vote? – During an erection!  (I could not help myself)

The volcano is smoldering.  You do it this way:

  1. Prepare the Onion.
  2. Heat the Grill or Pan.
  3. Stack the Onion Slices Like a Volcano.
  4. Pour a Little Sesame Oil Down the Center.
  5. Pour a Little Vodka Down the Center.
  6. Use a Long Lighter to Light the Hibachi Flames.

He moves rather quickly!

If you ask the question, “Where is the beef?”  We found it!

Romaji: Saru mo ki kara ochiru
Literally: Even monkees fall from trees
Meaning: Even an expert can make mistakes; also sometimes used as a warning that “pride comes before a fall”

We were all stuffed by the end of the evening.

We gather together after a long time in front of the grill!  Tunnies are full and the sake cups are dry.

Great fun with friends and family!

We got home and crashed!  It has been a long day and the kids drove two-plus hours on the freeway!
