Today was pretty long with most of the time spent at the hospital. No culture results and Sue was, for the most part, unable to remember Paul. The docs think it was a UTI which moved into sepsis. Sepsis is a life-threatening condition that arises when the body’s response to infection causes injury to its own tissues and organs by passing the infection throughout the body via the blood.
The doc said the choice of antibiotics is important in determining the survival of the person. Some recommend they be given within one hour of making the diagnosis, stating that for every hour of delay in the administration of antibiotics, there is an associated 6% rise in mortality. Scary stuff. As I recall, she went from the ER to having antibiotics within two hours (they needed to rule out stroke so a Catscan was ordered initially).
Thank you to everyone who called and special thanks to Michele and Irene who came to visit.
