Look Out Birdie!

Estimated reading time: 5 minutes

So true!

Mary’s calendar shows that today will be another busy day.  We began by removing the peas from the garden, which were no longer producing.  Next, we needed to visit the nursery to find a climbing vegetable before the party, but alas, we got too busy getting ready for the family.  Monday we will go vegetable shopping.

My trusty Red Syder double action bee-bee gun and I were in the yard, and I was singing “Bye Bye Birdie” as I managed to reduce the crow population by five!

Dead Eye Paul!

Colleen visited her mother, and everything went smoothly.  We prepared the house for guests, as Zachary and his family are scheduled to arrive at 2:00 pm for a refreshing swim in our 86-degree pool!

Kids who swim tend to have only one volume level – screeching!  Despite this, they had a great time swimming, and Lilly particularly enjoyed using Mary’s new unicorn float.  Remy just enjoyed everything.

We asked Joe and his family to join us, but COVID apparently got them at the camp!

Lilly and Remy came to swim with Mommy and Daddy.

I shared some tomato pie with Mary, and we both nibbled on it.  I also brought her some cucumber salad.  Mary was chatting with the grandkids, who affectionately called her “Miss Mary.”

Cucumber salad in the pool?

We spent about an hour chatting after our swim.

Mary had set aside a box of toys for the kids to go through.  Remy and Lilly were particularly excited about the beads and other artistic goodies as they rummaged through them.  Mary and I share the love of family and enjoyed watching the little varmints going through the newly found treasures.

We visited for quite a while.

It’s time to bid farewell, but we’ll be reunited with them on Wednesday at the OC Fair.  Lilly was thrilled with the sunflowers, so we promised her a few when they were ripe and ready to be consumed as seeds.

Lilly loved the sunflowers.  Remy (behind the tree) is looking for one to climb!

I intended to go to the store, but my car transportation had engine problems, so I had to stay home. It’s a shame modern vehicles don’t measure up to their predecessors.

Oops!

It’s 6:00 pm, and we’re ready for some delicious cheese fondue.  We recently tried a new method, and it turned out great!  We dipped onions, apples, grapes, bread, bell peppers, cherry tomatoes, and other tasty treats into the hot, bubbling cheese.  We followed the fondue rules from Martha Stewart, which state that you have a penalty if you accidentally lose your item in the cheese.  If you’re a girl, you have to kiss the guys, and if you’re a boy, you must buy a round of drinks.   I feel sorry for the crazy libs; they would be so confused!

Fondue for dinner.

After dinner, we played Telestrations.  Each player starts with their erasable sketch book, marker, and word card.  A roll of the die determines each player’s secret word.  The timer gets turned, and everyone draws their word.  After 60 seconds, everyone passes their book to the player on their left.

Then each player takes a few seconds to guess in words(s) what they see and passes again.  The timer is turned, and everyone draws the guess.  This continues until everyone’s sketchbook passes by every player and returns back to its original owner, where it’s time for The Big Reveal.

Everyone shares their book, and the hilarious miscommunication is revealed.  Just like the game of “telephone,” the outcomes are unpredictable, and the laughter is contagious!

We did not keep score as we wanted to make it just fun!

“Now, how do we do this again?”

Mary was ready for the game and proved to be very good at it contrary to Paul, who went off on tangents at every possible point.

She is ready!

Huh?  We took up a collection to send Robin to art school!

Clever!

I noticed that Paul’s drawings of ladies lacked detail in certain areas (I did stick figures).  I think it would be beneficial to look into this further.

MARY!!!

boB (his name spelled backward) was quite artistic.  He is now called “the bun man!”

Oh, Bob!

I was horrible by taking everyone down the nearest kinda-related rabbit hole but my artistic skills we unparalleled!  I think the wine helped!

I led them off track!

After the game, we had to stop and catch our breath.  Everyone was laughing themselves silly!  We celebrated Chuck’s 66th Birthday!

What goes up but never comes down?  Your age.

Happy Birthday you old fart!

Last night, everyone was exhausted and went to bed early. Mary and I considered taking a late-night swim in the pool, but we were too tired to do so. The temperature of the pool was still in the high 80s. I fell asleep quickly once we went to bed.

About Paul

Just an old retired guy trying to finish out my last years on this planet. I lost my best friend and wife in early 2020. I was blessed again by reconnecting with Dr. Mary Côté, a long-time friend. Mary and I got married July 28th, 2021, and are enjoying life together and plan to spend the rest of our lives being a blessing to our friends and family.
