Rain Rain Stay!!! We Need You!

Estimated reading time: 5 minutes

It rained all day, and we got another 3 inches according to our rain gauge!

We had another three inches of rain today!  I dumped the rain gauge yesterday, and it indicated 5.5 inches, so all told, we have had 8.5 inches of the wet stuff.  We are glad we turned off the sprinkler system until January 1.

We headed to the kitchen and did some additional cleanup after yesterday’s party.   The work really amounted to cleaning the countertops, unloading and reloading the dishwasher, and putting away some food like potato chips.

The mulled wine bowl was out, and the orange and lemon slices were still grape-colored.  I decided I would NOT waste the fruit, so I folded them in half and ate the insides, leaving the rine to be put down the sink!  Upon seeing myself in the mirror, it looked like I fought with a red plum, and the plum won!

The sugar cone is soaked in Kraken.  The lemons and oranges are soaked with wine!

At 10:00 am, Mary decided to go to the Brighton store in Brea to take advantage of their 30% off sale.  So, into the pouring rain we went, and on the way we called Zack to see if they wanted to go to lunch with us.  They jumped at the chance!

It was raining cats and dogs, and I just stepped in a poodle.

When we arrived at the mall, it was a war zone.  We made several passes through the lot and then gave up.  Another call to Zack to say we would meet them at El Cholo,  on  Whittier Blvd, just a mile from their house.

If a band is playing music and a thunderstorm hits, who is most likely to get hit by lightning?  The conductor, of course.

This restaurant is excellent, providing a warm family atmosphere even on a stormy day!

What do you call a bear in the rain?  A drizzly bear!

Why the name El Cholo?  In 1925, a guest wandered in for dinner, and while waiting, he drew a figure of a man (now the one you recognize from our menu).  He calls him “EL CHOLO”.

In those days, EL CHOLO was the term Spanish settlers in California used for their field hands.  Alejandro liked the man that was drawn (and the name) and immediately changed Sonora Cafe to EL CHOLO CAFE!

We had an excellent lunch and enjoyed being with Zack, Becca, Lilly, and Remy!  Great fun!

Zack got the fajitas, and they were steaming hot!!

The girls were watching their figures, but the food looked great!

Great-granddaughter Lilly and Rebecca

Remy is always shying away from the camera, but I finally caught him in a moment of inactivity!

These little people are a lot of fun!

On the way out, we got two pictures!  Can you tell which one I took?

Our feet got cut off, and the work (since erased) over the door was the word “Restrooms”.
Thank you, Photoshop!

Then the ol’ master stepped in, framed the image, and pushed the button!

After lunch, we returned to the mall, and I dropped Mary off at the front door while I searched for parking.  About ten minutes later, I got a spot adjacent ot the front door.  I searched for the Brighton store inside the mall, which took about fifteen minutes.  I had to ask several people because their automated directory boards were on the fritz.

Mary was busy inside reducing their inventory!

Actually, she bought a padded purse and some sunglasses that she had been wanting.  We then headed through the mass of humanity inside the mall and made our way ot the car.  It was raining like cats and dogs.

People say “it’s raining cats and dogs” for heavy rain because of several old, colorful theories, including dead animals washing through 17th-century streets after storms (like in Jonathan Swift’s poem), mythological beliefs linking cats to heavy rain and dogs to strong winds (Odin’s storms), or a misinterpretation of words like the Greek katadoupoi (waterfall) or the old English catadupe.  While the exact origin is unclear, the phrase conjures an intense, chaotic downpour.

Arriving home after fighting the traffic, we settled in the TV room and watched a couple of movies.  We ended up watching “Christmas Chronicles”, a hilarious 2018 movie, leaving us giggling and laughing until bedtime at 10:30 pm!

Mary had not seen this movie before, while I remembered some of it!  Siblings Kate and Teddy Pierce hatch a scheme to capture Santa Claus on Christmas Eve.  When the plan goes awry, the kids join forces with a somewhat jolly Saint Nick and his loyal elves to save the holiday before it’s too late.

At 10:30 pm, we headed to bed!  It had been a long day!
