As families grow up, the kids and kids and those families must create their own traditions. In our case that means the kids shead for the desert and we stay home (generally). We applaud their desire to go forth and establish their family traditions.
Memories
As I sit back at the ripe old age of 80 (minus three weeks) and put on my memory cap I think of the happiest of Thanksgivings and that would be in the early 1950s when my family would make the trip to PAramount Califonria and have Thanksgiving with Aunt Opal, Aunt Edit, and Aunt Alma (and their spices).
We would go to the little house which was maybe 600 square feet and the ladies would go inside and prepared a meal fit for a king. The men (me insluded) would sit outside under the trees and listen to the football game (we could not affort a TV in those days). BTW, we sat outside because with four women inside the house, there was no room!
The front yard was still a victory garden from WWII and I remember going out and picking string beans and tomatoes with my counsin Kat who was ten years older than me.
Across Los Angeles County, thousands of residents grew their own produce during World War II, joining a nationwide effort.
While the game was going on, my job was crank turner! Huh, you say? The Ice Cream maker was THE most important person at the festivities; without me, there would be no ice cream and that is NOT Thanksgiving!!
"But Dad, its hard to turn!!"
When dinner was served, mountains of food came pouriong out of that little house; it was a virtual avalanche to delectable dishes; my aunts were all excellent cooks. When it came to pies, we had chocolate, lemon merange, apple and quite often peach flavors.
When said Grace and then look out. If you reached across the table one could loose a limb easily. Plates were paassed at a rate approaching that of a gattling gun and, I might add, not a drop was spilt.
Those were my definition of "HAPPY DAYS".
