Did You Know?
The Madison was a popular line dance of the 1950s and 60s. It was also featured in a movie starring Ricki Lake, Jerry Stiller, Sonny Bono and Divine. What was the name of the movie?
Hairspray. The Madison is reported to have been started in Columbus, Ohio by William "Bubbles" Holloway. The Madison is a dance where the dancer moves in steps back and forth. Different moves are called out during the dance. Some of the names of these moves include: the Double Cross, the Cleveland Box, the Big M, the Rifleman, and the Jackie Gleason.
Another popular line dance from the 1950s was the Stroll. What musical group from the 1950s wrote a song called "The Stroll"?
The Diamonds. The Stroll became popular due to the show "American Bandstand". According to Dick Clark, there wasn't an official song about The Stroll, so he asked The Diamonds to come up with a song and they did. Basically, The Stroll is a dance where there are two parallel lines, of guys on one side and girls on the other. Each couple makes their way to the end of the line and then they dance their way down between the two lines of people. Two examples of the Stroll can be seen in the movies "Grease" and "American Graffiti".
