Our 2010 Tomatoes
While virtually all commercial tomato varieties are red, some tomato cultivars - especially heirlooms - produce fruit in colors other than red , including yellow , orange , pink , black , brown , ivory , white , and purple , though such fruit is not widely available in grocery stores, nor are their seedlings available in typical nurseries, but must be bought as seed, often via mail-order. Less common variations include fruit with stripes (Green Zebra), fuzzy skin on the fruit (Fuzzy Peach, Red Boar), multiple colors (Hillbilly, Burracker's Favorite, Lucky Cross).
Front Yard
- Early Girl - The Early Girl tomato is a medium globe type F1 hybrid popular with home gardeners because of its early fruit ripening. Early Girl is an indeterminate variety. It is tall growing and needs support as the plant grows. Fruit maturity claims range from 50 to 62 days from transplanting, which appeals to growers in climates with shorter frost-free seasons. (However, the plants of this variety are not particularly cold-tolerant.) Plants are reliable and prolific.
The ripe fruit is about the size and shape of a tennis ball -- very much a standard tomato—and weighs 4 to 8 ounces (~130g). It has a bright color and good flavor, but is usually replaced at the table by later-producing varieties which are considered better tasting. - Better Boy
- Beefsteak
- Beefmaster
- Principe Borghese - This tomato is grown specifically for sun drying. 1-2" plum-shaped fruit, prolific producer, and crack resistant. Also a good choice for pastes and sauces
- Juliet - A grape tomato is a class of tomatoes originally believed to be of southeast Asian origin, shaped similarly to the oblong plum tomatoes but having the small size and sweetness of cherry tomatoes. Grape tomatoes produce small and typically oblong fruits. Introduced to the worldwide market in the 1990s, they have gained substantial popularity, due at least in part to their higher sugar content compared to regular tomatoes, and due to their smaller, bite-sized shape.

Vickey's Side (Front To Back)
- Mr Stripey - Mr. Stripey is a type of heirloom tomatoes with unusually small leaves and a mix of a yellow and red color that can fool some growers into thinking they are picking an unripe tomato. Under good conditions in size, shape and internal structure it may be considered a "beefsteak". Like other heirlooms, Mr. Stripey has an appearance that differs considerably from other tomatoes. In coloration it is generally somewhat more yellow near the stem and more red towards its underside, with gentle stripes of red and yellow blending into each other along the sides. This coloration may extend into the interior of the fruit, which tends to be more yellow than red.
When conditions are right and the fruit is fully ripe the taste will be surprisingly sweet and mild, superior to most store bought varieties. The mild character of the tomato flavor is best used where it is intended to blend in with other flavors such as in a pasta sauce or salad. The flavor in good conditions and when fully ripe is pleasingly sweet when sliced raw - excellent for hors de ouvres. The ripe flesh is soft, juicy and extremely tender. - ???

Smith's (Back To Front)
- Ananas Noire - This unusual variety was developed by Pascal Moreau, a horticulturist from Belgium. The multi-colored, smooth fruit (green, yellow and purple mix) weigh about 1 1/2 lbs. The flesh is bright green with deep red streaks. Everyone loves their superb flavor that is outstanding, being both sweet and smoky with a hint of citrus.
- Dixie Golden Giant - 85 days, indet., regular foliage, 12 oz to 1+ lb, gold fruit with good taste, excellent yield.
- Green Zebra - Green Zebra is a tomato cultivar with characteristic dark green and yellow stripes. Newer variations blush reddish instead of yellow when ripe. It is more tart than regular tomatoes, and it is an early breed. Compared to other tomato varieties, it can produce somewhat mealy fruits. Green Zebra was bred by Tom Wagner of Everett, Washington, and introduced in his Tater-Mater Seed Catalog in 1983. It is not an heirloom tomato, despite often being mistakenly designated as one
- Black Zebra
- Black Krim - Beefsteak-type very meaty tomato with black/dark purple (mahogany-brown) streaked skin with green shoulders, have green gel around seeds. In hotter weather, the colour will darken even more dramatically. Reportedly this tomato is prone to cracking, however, heavy watering can help prevent this. Does well in hot spells.
