Did You Know? - St. Patrick's Day Fun Facts:
St. Patrick wasn't Irish: He was born in Roman Britain (present-day Wales) around 385 AD. His real name wasn't Patrick: His given name was Maewyn Succat, and he later adopted the name Patricius or Patrick.
The first St. Patrick's Day parade was in the US: The first recorded parade took place in St. Augustine, Florida, in 1601.
The shamrock was used to explain the Holy Trinity: St. Patrick used the three-leafed plant to illustrate the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
Corned beef and cabbage isn't traditionally Irish: This dish is actually an American invention.
St. Patrick's Day used to be a dry holiday: In Ireland, pubs were closed on St. Patrick's Day until the 1970s.
The color associated with St. Patrick's Day was originally blue: The official color of the Order of St. Patrick was a deep sky blue, known as "St. Patrick's Blue".
There is no such thing as a female leprechaun: Leprechauns are mischievous Irish fairies, and according to Irish folklore, there are no female leprechauns.
St. Patrick was never officially canonized: While he is recognized as a saint by many, the Catholic Church never formally canonized him.
St. Patrick was kidnapped and enslaved in Ireland: As a teenager, he was captured by Irish pirates and taken to Ireland as a slave.
