Candles Are Lit... Time To Blow Them Out
All lit up and ready to go.... So is the cake!
You first.... No, you first!
They can do it!
Did You Know? - About 200 years ago, cutting a cake during a birthday party began in Germany. As Germans were skilled at candle-making, they started putting tiny candles around the cake and a big candle, representing the light of life, in the centre.
The tradition of blowing them out also began around then, partly out of superstition and partly for fun. The birthday person is supposed to make a wish, and if blown out in a single puff, the smoke would carry the wish heavenwards, and the gods would grant the wish.
We are ready! On the count of three....
Whooooosh - Stand back! Wind danger warning
Marianne "Windy" Hanlon blows hers out!
Did You Know? - This recipe is also known as "Death by Chocolate", as it contains a considerable amount of chocolate, if topped with chocolate ice cream and lashings of whipped cream."
In addition to Death By Chocolate, the many variations include pudding fudge cake, made with chocolate cake mix, chocolate pudding, and chocolate chips.
Alternatively, "fudge cake" is a term in the American South to refer to a dense, single-layer chocolate cake served with or without icing. It is similar to a brownie, although moister with more chocolate.
Little does Marcia know....
Did You Know? - The difference between a normal candle and a trick candle is what happens just after you blow it out. When you blow out a normal candle, you will see a thin ribbon of smoke rise up from the wick. This is vaporized paraffin (candle wax).
The wick ember you get when you blow out the candle is hot enough to vaporize the paraffin of the candle, but it isn't hot enough to re-ignite it. If you blow across the wick of a normal candle right after you blow it out, you might be able to get it to glow red-hot, but the candle won't burst into flame.
Trick candles have a material added to the wick that is capable of being ignited by the relatively low temperature of the hot wick ember. When a trick candle is blown out, the wick ember ignites this material, which burns hot enough to ignite the paraffin vapor of the candle. The flame you see in a candle is burning paraffin vapor.
"I'm going to Huff and Puff and blow this derned cake off the table!"
Marcia enlisted Donna to assist... It didn't work!
The candles had everyone cracking up!
Donna to the rescue
Arturo and Geoff knew the secret!
The candle finally went out Monday morning about 3am
We found the guilty party -
Arturo The Great!
Did You Know? - We can't figure it out! We brought the green candles (they were normal) and Arturo added the blue striped candles (they were blow-out proof)... Marianne was able to blow-out the candle that can't blow out AND Marcia kept both of hers lit.... Perhaps, we experienced a miracle?
