Did You Know? - The Pike was an amusement zone in Long Beach, California. The Pike was founded in 1902 along the shoreline south of Ocean Boulevard with several independent arcades, food stands, gift shops, a variety of rides and a grand bath house.

It was most noted for the Cyclone Racer (1930–1968), a large wooden dual-track roller coaster, built out on pilings over the water.

The Pike operated under several names. The amusement zone surrounding the Pike, "Silver Spray Pier", was included along with additional parking in the post World War II expansion; it was all renamed Nu-Pike via a contest winner's submission in the late 1950s, then renamed Queen's Park in the late 1960s in homage to the arrival of the Queen Mary ocean liner in Long Beach.

1979 was the year Long Beach city council refused to renew the land leases and demolished all of the structures and attractions it could that weren't trucked away.

Did You Know? - Beany and Cecil was an animated cartoon series created by Bob Clampett under the Warner Brothers aegis, based on a hand puppet TV show in the late 40's by Clampett.

The puppet show, entitled Time for Beany, originally aired in 1949, and the animated series first appeared in Matty's Funday Funnies in 1959, later renamed Matty's Funnies with Beany and Cecil and finally Beany and Cecil in the USA.

Another season was produced in 1988. In its original form with hand puppets, the show conveyed a greater sense of personal communication than did the animated series that followed. The hand puppets were extensively marketed and sold well.

Although a children's show, it incorporated satirical references to current events and personalities which adults found entertaining, and the show also attracted adult viewers. Some of the plots were easily recognisable as thinly veiled lampoons of current political issues.

Snarky side remarks by Beany, Cecil and the rest of the cast often alluded to embarrassing public fiascos or personages, on which the adult audience immediately picked up.

Did You Know? - Walking the plank was a form of punishment thought to have been practiced on special occasion by pirates, mutineers, and other rogue seafarers. For the amusement of the perpetrators (and the psychological torture of the victims), captives were forced to walk off a wooden plank or beam extended over the side of a ship.

Did You Know? - The Lion's Lighthouse for Sight is a welcomed addition to the list of West Coast Lighthouses. Fairly new, it was funded in part and dedicated by the Long Beach Lion's Club. The light tower is a symbol of their fundraiser activities for the visually impaired.

The Lion's Lighthouse for Sight was dedicated by the Long Beach Lion's Club on December 10, 2000.

With its sixty five foot conical shaped white steel tower, the Lion's Lighthouse for Sight has a traditional lighthouse structure with a focal plane height of one hundred and five feet, with the harbormaster's office centered in the base of the light tower.

Although the operational light tower enables safe navigation for ships entering or leaving the Long Beach Harbor, Lion's Lighthouse for Sight is not a typical lighthouse in the sense that it was established and dedicated by a group supporting a specific cause for the community.

Lion's Lighthouse is owned by the United States Coast Guard, the grounds are closed, and there are no public tours. The base of the light tower is equipped with computer operated lighting that displays a fascinating colored light show each night.

In close proximity to the Aquarium of the Pacific, and Parker's Lighthouse & Restaurant, the Lion's Lighthouse for Sight towers over 18.6 acres of lush greenery where visitors come to picnic, or for special events such as weddings, birthdays, and family reunions.

Did You Know? - A bulbous bow is a protruding bulb at the bow (or front) of a ship just below the waterline. The bulb modifies the way the water flows around the hull, reducing drag and thus increasing speed, range, fuel efficiency, and stability.

Large ships with bulbous bows generally have a twelve to fifteen percent better fuel efficiency than similar vessels without them.

A bulbous bow also increases the buoyancy of the forward part and hence reduces the pitching of the ship to a small degree.
