Bridgetown, Barbados, was named for the wooden bridge built by its early inhabitants over the Careenage River, first called "Indian Bridge". The city is home to the Parliament Buildings, which house the third-oldest parliament in the Commonwealth, and the Nidhe Israel Synagogue, the oldest in the Americas. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for its well-preserved colonial architecture and significant role in the sugar industry and British colonial history.
