Which year are you?
"Why yes indeed... We have your number!"
Did You Know? - The 1920s is the decade in which fashion entered the modern era. It was the decade in which women first abandoned the more restricting fashions of past years and began to wear more comfortable clothes (such as short skirts or trousers). Men also abandoned highly formal daily attire and even began to wear athletic clothing for the first time.
The suits men wear today are still based, for the most part, on those worn in the late 1920s. The 1920s are characterized by two distinct periods of fashion.
In the early part of the decade, change was slow, as many were reluctant to adopt new styles. From 1925, the public passionately embraced the styles associated with the Roaring Twenties. These styles continue to characterize fashion until early in 1932.
Bill's cravat is making a statement!
Did You Know? - The cravat first appeared around 1660. Stylish men wore long, flowey wigs at the time, which obscured the lace collars previously in style. But men still had to accessorize their neck somehow, so the cravat came into style. Originating in Paris, as most of the best trends do, the cravat was first seen on a regiment of Croats, called cravates by the Parisians, who wore cloths wrapped around their necks as a charm against injuries. French men thought this was rather dashing, and so adopted the style themselves, calling the new cloth wrap a cravat.
Early cravats were made of a long strip of white fabric, and could be decorated with embroidery or lace at the ends. Already there were several options for the method of tying it, from a simple knot with the ends hanging down to a dashing bow to the steinkirk, named for the style in which French soldiers wore their cravats at the Battle of Steinkirk in 1692.
By the end of the 19th century, the cravat had evolved into the tie we all know today. At first the tie coexisted peacefully with other styles, including the popular ascot style, but eventually the tie dominated fashion and became the standard for all men.
Bill thought the invitation said 1820's!

The tables were beautiful, as usual!
Did You Know? - In Roman times, there was a demand for ostriches to use in venatio games or cooking. They have been hunted and farmed for their feathers, which at various times have been popular for ornamentation in fashionable clothing (such as hats during the 19th century).
Their skins are valued for their leather. In the 18th century they were almost hunted to extinction; farming for feathers began in the 19th century. At the start of the 20th century there were over 700,000 birds in captivity.
The market for feathers collapsed after World War I, but commercial farming for feathers and later for skins and meat became widespread during the 1970s. Ostriches are so adaptable that they can be farmed in climates ranging from South Africa to Alaska.
