Kona, Hawaii
Please visit our trip photo gallery for our view of Kona (from a golfer's eye).
Kailua-Kona is a census-designated place located in Hawaii County, Hawa'i, in the North Kona District of the Island of Hawaii.
It is the center of commerce and of the tourist industry on West Hawaii. It is famous in the sports world as the site of the Hawai'i Ironman Triathlon.
The town's post office is designated Kailua-Kona to differentiate it from the larger, Kailua located on windward Oahu, although it is referred to as "Kona" in everyday speech.
Many place names in the Hawaiian Islands are repeated on several islands, but the two Kailuas are the only confusing conflict in this regard. The city is served by Kona International Airport.
Kailua-Kona was the closest major settlement to the epicenter of the 2006 Hawai`i Earthquake.
Kailua-Kona was established by King Kamehameha I to be his seat of government (he originally was the chief of Kona, before unifying more and more of the archipelago under his rule), and the capital of the newly unified Kingdom of Hawai`i.
The capital was later moved to Lāhainā, then, to Honolulu.
Royal fishponds at Kaloko-Honokōhau National Historical Park were the hub of unified Hawaiian culture.
More recently, this region has undergone a real-estate and construction boom fueled by tourism and investment.

After reaching the crescendo, all you see is a clear blue ocean, swaying palm trees and a panoramic view from Keauhou to Kona.
Take a moment on our par 3, hole #5 and #14. Both holes feature exotic drops from tee to green. Hole 14 is the highest point of the course and is the most picturesque hole.
There is a waterfall surrounded by red bougainvillea and black lava rock, scenic lake and miles of ocean as far as the eye can see. The Mountain Course is enriched in Hawaiian culture.
This area was a favorite playground for Hawaiian royalties known as Alii. You’ll see Hawaiian wild goats moving throughout the back nine. Golf Digest Magazine rated the Mountain Course as 4 stars and ESPN, Zagat Guide recognized it as one of the top facilities in nation.
