{"id":72139,"date":"2023-09-04T23:31:57","date_gmt":"2023-09-05T06:31:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lilesnet.com\/dailydiary\/?p=72139"},"modified":"2023-09-05T05:57:48","modified_gmt":"2023-09-05T12:57:48","slug":"one-more-day-of-relaxation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lilesnet.com\/dailydiary\/?p=72139","title":{"rendered":"One More Day Of Relaxation!"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"didYouKnow\">\n<p><strong>Memories: Paul The Ham!\u00a0 <\/strong>In 1956, during my time in Junior High School, we had various shop classes available to us, including electric, metal, print, and auto shops.\u00a0 While I took every class except auto shop, I didn&#8217;t feel like I missed out on anything because my father had already taught me everything I needed to know about cars.<\/p>\n<p>I went to an electric shop and built an intercom using an old vacuum tube radio.\u00a0 Mom was thrilled as she could call out to Dad and me in the garage when dinner was ready.\u00a0 Unfortunately, I cannot recall the name of the electric shop teacher, but I do remember that he had bright red hair and was a ham radio operator.<\/p>\n<p>In January 1957, I obtained my Novice license as WN6CJC after studying Morse Code and the novice theory that was required.\u00a0 With the help of my parents, I purchased a National NC-303 receiver and put together a Globe Chief 90A kit transmitter.\u00a0 By using Morse Code, I was able to communicate with people from all over the world and received QSL (confirmation) cards from over 100 different countries.<\/p>\n<p>In 1980, I had to discontinue my involvement in Ham Radio as family and work commitments left me no spare time.\u00a0 Back in the day, I used to operate my Gonset GSB-100 and NC-303 receiver, which were kept in a closet of my home in La Mirada.\u00a0 I obtained an Amateur Extra Class license under the callsign WA6CJC when I entered high school.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_72140\" style=\"width: 463px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-72140\" class=\" wp-image-72140\" src=\"http:\/\/lilesnet.com\/dailydiary\/wp-content\/dailydiary\/uploads\/2023\/09\/2023-09-04-001-650x666.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"453\" height=\"464\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lilesnet.com\/dailydiary\/wp-content\/dailydiary\/uploads\/2023\/09\/2023-09-04-001-650x666.jpg 650w, https:\/\/lilesnet.com\/dailydiary\/wp-content\/dailydiary\/uploads\/2023\/09\/2023-09-04-001-146x150.jpg 146w, https:\/\/lilesnet.com\/dailydiary\/wp-content\/dailydiary\/uploads\/2023\/09\/2023-09-04-001-768x787.jpg 768w, https:\/\/lilesnet.com\/dailydiary\/wp-content\/dailydiary\/uploads\/2023\/09\/2023-09-04-001.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 453px) 100vw, 453px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-72140\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">I spent many hours in the 1960s and 1970s making friends worldwide with Ham Radio!<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I served as a Navy MARS Operator during the Vietnam War with the call sign N0HSR.\u00a0 My role was to pass messages from deployed soldiers in Viet Nam to their friends and family in my local area.\u00a0 As a token of appreciation for my service, the Navy provided me with surplus equipment.\u00a0 Among the equipment I received was an AN\/FRT-17 Transmitter.\u00a0 I was able to get it running and was offered a second one, which I accepted.\u00a0 The AN\/FRT-17 Transmitter weighed a whopping 1,500 pounds and had 80 vacuum tubes inside!\u00a0 I kept it in my garage around 1975.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_72150\" style=\"width: 485px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-72150\" class=\" wp-image-72150\" src=\"http:\/\/lilesnet.com\/dailydiary\/wp-content\/dailydiary\/uploads\/2023\/09\/2023-09-04-010-650x974.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"475\" height=\"712\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lilesnet.com\/dailydiary\/wp-content\/dailydiary\/uploads\/2023\/09\/2023-09-04-010-650x974.jpg 650w, https:\/\/lilesnet.com\/dailydiary\/wp-content\/dailydiary\/uploads\/2023\/09\/2023-09-04-010-100x150.jpg 100w, https:\/\/lilesnet.com\/dailydiary\/wp-content\/dailydiary\/uploads\/2023\/09\/2023-09-04-010-768x1150.jpg 768w, https:\/\/lilesnet.com\/dailydiary\/wp-content\/dailydiary\/uploads\/2023\/09\/2023-09-04-010.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 475px) 100vw, 475px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-72150\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Two AN\/FRT-17&#8217;s in action! Check out my pride and joy, a Collins 75A4 receiver &#8211; best in the world!<\/p><\/div>\n<p>For fun, I used to call my station &#8220;Radio Free La Mirada&#8221; because I also built a 8,000-watt amplifier using two 4-1000A tubes and an old &#8220;pole pig&#8221; transformer generating 8,000 VDC at 1.2 amperes on the plates. The dish took its modern form and name in the middle of the 20th century. The cheese is usually Pecorino Romano, parmesan, or a combination of the two.<\/p>\n<p>Since the name is derived from carbonaro (the Italian word for &#8220;charcoal burner&#8221;), some believe the dish was first made as a hearty meal for Italian charcoal workers.
