Was A Work Day!"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"didYouKnow\">\n<p><strong>Memories: Too Hot To Eat!<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0Many moons ago when I moved into my first home in La Mirada, I wanted a garden.\u00a0 We had to room so I dug up a six by six foot spot.\u00a0 The dirt was horrible, pure clay.\u00a0 I looked at the garden books, this was before the internet.\u00a0 It said to apply &#8220;steer manure&#8221; to the ground.<\/p>\n<p>OK, I went to the local lumber yard and bought eight bags of steer manure.\u00a0 I figured the soil was so bad that eight bags would be fine.<\/p>\n<p>It took me an entire day to turn the soil and dig in the steer manure.\u00a0 It was early summer so I planted radishes and watermelon.\u00a0 Time to wait.<\/p>\n<p>I watered the plot religiously awaiting the plants to pop up and they did.\u00a0 The radishes came first and then the watermelon.<\/p>\n<p>Well, when I bit into the radish, I had to spit it out because it was firey hot to the taste; we are talking  blistering, boiling, broiling, burning hot.\u00a0 I just assumed I got the wrong kind of radishes, I was not yet a farmer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The sugar-baby melons began to form and they we a tad on the small size.\u00a0 I waited a month and decided to try one.\u00a0 One bite and again, spit it out onto the lawn where it burnt the grass.\u00a0 The melon was scalding, scorching, searing, sizzling. sultry. sweltering snf torrid; I could have patented it as a tongue remover.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-70295\" src=\"http:\/\/lilesnet.com\/dailydiary\/wp-content\/dailydiary\/uploads\/2023\/06\/2023-06-26-comics-1-650x759.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"486\" height=\"567\" next-door neighbor about what I had done; we owned a nursery.\u00a0 When I told him of the soil-to-manure mix, he damn near fell over laughing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Time to check the corn and many of the ears are ready.\u00a0 Those that are not probably will never be ready because of the crazy weather, which made the top of the corn come out too early.\u00a0 The average ear of corn has 800 kernels, arranged on 16 rows,\u00a0with one silk for each kernel.\u00a0 Corn, also called maize, has existed for about 7,000 years.<\/p>\n<p>Did you know there\u2019s an app for corn growers?\u00a0It\u2019s made in Sili-corn Valley.<\/p>\n<p>Did you hear about the piece of corn that got in trouble?\u00a0 It got quite the earful.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_70274\" style=\"width: class=\"wp-caption-text\">We got our first corn; ate it for lunch!<\/p><\/div>\n<p>We worked for two hours trimming and sprucing up the garden.\u00a0 Mary quit early, went inside with a collection of class=\"wp-caption-text\">Every morning at the salt mine.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I stayed outside and planted a row of beets thirty feet long just at the edge of the concrete.\u00a0 They should be sprouting in a week, and we will have beets all summer long.\u00a0 They are so good roasted we could eat them daily, and they are excellent for the old ticker.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_70291\" style=\"width: sprinkle in salt and pepper.\u00a0 Roast in an oven for one and a half times longer than a potato of the same size.\u00a0 Stick a fork through the foil to be sure they are tender.\u00a0 Unwrap carefully, cutoff the top and bottom, and the skin will fall off.\u00a0 Cut into whatever size you like; we like bite size and served with goat cheese crumbles.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-70285\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We had some room and had some seeds; which means they get planted.\u00a0 I added potting soil to the dirt and dropped din the seeds.\u00a0 The plants will sprout and break the surface\u00a0 in about 10 days.\u00a0 In two months we will have a plethora of beets; we planted three different kinds.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_70276\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">We wanted beets at the end of the concrete to the right of the grapes,<\/p><\/div>\n<p>At 1:00 pm, we took Scout to the vet to get his shots and get his ears examined.<\/p>\n<p>We don\u2019t think Veterinarians should be called doctors at all!\u201cDogtors seems like a more apt description, don\u2019t you think?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While he was with the doctor, we drove two blocks to the OC Farmers Supply and loaded up with new corn, many veggies for the garden, and some fresh flowers.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_70277\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Paul got the heavy load.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>After unloading, we went to Home Depot and bought 100 pounds of agricultural sand to plant more carrots.\u00a0 We also got another three large bags of potting soil to replace some of the dirt in the corn garden.\u00a0 Our work is cut out for us tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p>We stopped by Ralph&#8217;s Market and got some groceries.\u00a0 Normally we would have visited our friend in Villa Park, but since she had not called, we assumed she was still sick and did not want to be disturbed.\u00a0 Maybe she will call tomorrow or Wednesday and join us for an outing to lunch?<\/p>\n<p>While Mary cooked dinner, I installed the new bunting on the front of the house; it looks great.\u00a0 Even our neighbors commented on the
