Memories: The Day The Store Burnt Down!\u00a0 <\/strong>It was 1955, and Mom picked me up from school, but she looked worried.\u00a0 She said, “Number Three stored burnt down”\u00a0 That meant the Ralph’s 5, 10 & 25 Cent store at the corner of Pico and La Cienega Blvd was lost.<\/p>\n

This was part of Ralph’s dime store chain; in those days, it was also the warehouse.\u00a0 I was hoping the fire was still going so I could help put it out.<\/p>\n

Alas, the fire was out!<\/p><\/div>\n

Most of the downstairs was burnt out as we approached it, but the second floor, housing the offices and some goods, mainly was smoke and heat damaged.\u00a0 The basement was sopping wet as the sprinklers went on without abandon!<\/p>\n

We were allowed stairs for a glimpse.\u00a0 Ralph, my Dad’s boss, said.\u00a0 “If you want any stationary supplies, get them.”\u00a0 I packed two large boxes with Crayolas, pencils, and paper.\u00a0 Dad asked me what I wanted to do with everything, and I had no answer, but as soon as I got home, I called the neighborhood kids over and distributed my newfound wealth.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

We did our morning walk and inspected everything.\u00a0 All the tomatoes seem to be doing well!<\/p>\n

This ought to be interesting to see when ripe.<\/p><\/div>\n

We moved the bench from the front yards to the back so we could sit and watch the veggies grow.\u00a0 We will need an end table to hold our drinks.<\/p>\n

An oldie but a goody; we just repainted it last year.<\/p><\/div>\n

On Monday, we went to PT, and Mary’s arm is doing well.\u00a0 After that, we wandered to the courthouse to submit some papers and found out they were no good because someone signed them and the signature went “below the line”!\u00a0 It sounded like phooey to us, but we had to redo the form and get a new signature.<\/p>\n

Back home via Albertson’s market, we got a few goodies for tonight’s dinner.\u00a0 Mary worked on her boxes, completed five, and did an excellent job!\u00a0 \u00a0We found Donna around 2:00 pm and dropped by there to get her signature and again went to the courthouse.<\/p>\n

The second try was a charm!<\/p><\/div>\n

We returned home, and Mary worked on boxes finishing off another three as we had dinner and watched the series “The Diplomat.”\u00a0 Mary fixed a stirfry from the garden, and it was pretty incredible.\u00a0 I have been gardening for years and never knew that Cauliflower and Broccoli leaves were edible; I always tossed them out.\u00a0 No more; I pick; Mary cooks!<\/p>\n

We watched “The Diplomat,” which has eight episodes; we are on number four this evening.\u00a0 Summary: Amid an international crisis, Kate Wyler, a career diplomat, lands a high-profile job for which she is not suited, with tectonic implications for her marriage and her political future.<\/p>\n
