The garden is “a lot” of work, mostly time consuming!\u00a0 The rewards justify the effort!<\/p>\n

These little guys sticking out of the ground come from asparagus crowns that are four years old!<\/p>\n
<\/a>Look carefully… The asparagus plants are sticking their little heads up!<\/p><\/div>\n
Did You Know?<\/strong> Asparagus (Asparagus officinalis) is a member of the Lily family and is related to onions and garlic. The asparagus spears grow from a crown that is planted about a foot deep in sandy soils. The spears are usually not harvested until the 3rd or 4th year, to allow the crown to develop a strong root system. The plants will then produce spears for about 15 years. Under ideal conditions, an asparagus spear can grow 10″ in a 24-hour period. Each crown will send spears up for about 6-7 weeks during the spring and early summer. How often spears may be picked depends on the temperature. Early in the season, spears may be picked every 4 days or so, and later as the average temperature warms up, they may have to be picked every day!<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n We have almost twenty strawberry plants of varying varieties meaning we get months of strawberries fresh every morning!<\/p>\n Another week and fresh strawberries every morning!<\/p><\/div>\n We had lunch and then headed to Old Ranch to play nine holes of golf!\u00a0 Sue got to visit her friends, the geese.\u00a0 They know her well and come right up and honk “hello”.<\/p>\n Honk Honk! Here we come!<\/p><\/div>\n After nine holes, we had a drink with the Cathey’s and got caught up on all the family activities.<\/p>\n Off to the baseball game.\u00a0 We went to La Mirada to see Charlie play baseball.\u00a0 We met with Tony (Amy’s dad) and Joe, plus a surprise visitor, Mark! (OK, it was not a surprise).\u00a0 Mark visited Joe and Amy and then Mark joineded us at the Phoenix Club.\u00a0 We told Colleen we would have Mark up and dancing.\u00a0 She said “No Way”.
