Some people call it Thursday, I like to call it Friday Eve<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wine run! I was up early so we did our morning champagne and then I headed out. Of course, the ol’ Silver Ghost pulled directly into Lowe’s and it forced me to go shopping! O came home with a new orchid and I found my favorite orchid pots on sale. I also got a gallon of Roundup to kill the neighbors evasive vines!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0Our orchids are tropical\u00a0orchids\u00a0and are epiphytes, which means that they\u00a0grow\u00a0in the air, rather than in\u00a0soil<\/strong>. Their fleshy roots are covered with a layer of white cells called velamen, which acts as a sponge to absorb water. I use the sphagnum moss to line the pot and fill the inside with redwood or Douglas fir bark. That way plenty of air gets to the roots and the moss keeps the area moist but not wet!<\/p>\n\n\n

Did You Know? Sphagnum is a genus of approximately 380 accepted species of mosses, commonly known as “peat moss”. Accumulations of Sphagnum can store water, since both living and dead plants can hold large quantities of water inside their cells; plants may hold 16 to 26 times as much water as their dry weight, depending on the species. The empty cells help retain water in drier conditions.

Sphagnum mosses occur mainly in the Northern Hemisphere in peat bogs, conifer forests, and moist tundra areas. Their northernmost populations lie in the archipelago of Svalbard, Arctic Norway, at 81\u00b0 N.

I buy the moss from Amazon and use a moss that is picked\/harvested for orchids!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We just stayed home today as we are going out this evening. The Phoenix Club was great this evening even-though it was in the back room! <\/p>\n\n\n\n
