Did you know?<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>avocado<\/strong> (<em>Persea americana<\/em>), also known as <em><strong>palta<\/strong><\/em> or <em><strong>aguacate<\/strong><\/em> (<a title=\"Spanish language\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spanish_language\">Spanish<\/a>), <strong>butter pear<\/strong> or <strong>alligator pear<\/strong>, is a <a title=\"Tree\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tree\">tree<\/a> native to <a title=\"The Caribbean\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Caribbean\">the Caribbean<\/a>, <a title=\"Mexico\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mexico\">Mexico<\/a>, <a title=\"South America\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/South_America\">South America<\/a> and <a title=\"Central America\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Central_America\">Central America<\/a>, classified in the <a title=\"Flowering plant\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Flowering_plant\">flowering plant<\/a> family <a title=\"Lauraceae\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lauraceae\">Lauraceae<\/a> along with cinnamon, camphor and bay (laurel) leaves. The name &#8220;avocado&#8221; also refers to the <a title=\"Fruit\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fruit\">fruit<\/a> (technically a large <a title=\"Berry\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Berry\">berry<\/a>) of the kupa shell that contains a pit (hard seed casing) which may be egg-shaped or spherical.<\/p>\n<p>Avocados are a commercially valuable crop whose trees and fruit are cultivated in tropical climates throughout the world (and some temperate ones, such as <a title=\"California\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/California\">California<\/a>), producing a green-skinned, pear-shaped fruit that ripens after harvesting.
